The Rite of Reverence is nearly over, and each Maiden has one last shot at becoming the first-place future consort. It's been a whirlwind of chaos, from Kou Reirin and Shu Keigetsu's explosive fight to the consorts' dastardly schemes...not to mention the foiled assassination attempt! When Reirin discovers the common thread behind all these mishaps, she decides it’s time to launch a counterattack—but can she get all five Maidens to set their spats aside and join forces in the final trial?
While the conclusion to the arc wasn’t quite as exciting and compelling as its lead-up, I liked how things ended for the most part. All the maidens joining together was very satisfying, and I really appreciate how distinctive each of their personalities are. The fact they all learned about a certain secret in basically the same way was also quite funny and telling of how easy it is to perceive such a things if one just looks hard and cares enough to notice.
As always, I loved, loved, loved Keigetsu and her part in the story, particularly her monologue about having to take on the burden of being an integral part of the climatic event — I just really like how likable she is despite being billed as the titular “villainess”. The ramifications of their actions was also left on a very interesting note, so I’m intrigued to see where the story goes from here.
I’d say the only holding back this volume from being as excellent as it could be is the depiction of the “bad guys,” who, while vial, ended up being disappointingly one-note. I like some diversity and gray-scale in the depiction of the masterminds behind the scenes, who could have been the tragic heroes if the story were told from a different pov, but unfortunately from how the maidens uncovered their sinister plot to the unveiling of their misdeeds, and finally their comeuppance, all of it was handled very blandly without much pizazz or extra umph. I especially didn’t like how their “punishment” was dolled out — it was supposed to be very cathartic and karmic, but in the end it just felt unnecessarily trite and inhumane. Once again I may be expecting too much intricacy from a light novel series, but I just want all the characters and plot at hand to be treated with the same diligence and care as the lovely friendship and subsequent character growth of Keigetsu and Reirin. Still, I’m really enjoying the series and looking forward to the next installment.
