Consciousness Is All There Is: How Understanding and Experiencing Consciousness Will Transform Your Life

Rate this book
From a renowned Vedic scholar, leader of the Maharishi Foundations, and Harvard-trained this book answers fundamental existential questions with practical benefits for enlightenment, peace, and fulfillment.

"In this landmark book, Dr. Tony Nader presents ideas that can change the world. He proposes profound solutions to questions that have long fascinated and intrigued philosophers and scientists. What is Consciousness, do we have freedom? How to get the best out of life, fulfill wishes and create peace and harmony among peoples and nations? He offers these solutions, based on a simple underlying paradigm, that unifies mind, body, and environment into an ocean of pure Being, Pure Consciousness. A must read for any seeker of answers to the mysteries of life, the absolute and ultimate truth." — David Lynch

Is there some hidden purpose in life, a secret design, a meaningful logic, a goal to be achieved? Where do we come from and where do we go after we leave? Why should we be fighting? Can we choose? Are we free or slaves of destiny, of the laws of nature or of God?

As sentient beings who wish to take control of our lives, we end up making assumptions about these fundamental questions or strongly subscribing to beliefs about them. Those convictions become our underlying "cosmovision" that influences everything we do.

Dr. Tony Nader originally turned to the study of medicine, psychiatry, and neurology to try to understand why, despite being so similar, we can be so different in our opinions, mentality, and points of view. But the answers to his fundamental questions were too complex and abstract for scientific investigation. It was Transcendental Meditation that allowed him to explore them through direct experience, rather than analysis and deduction. This book is dedicated to all seekers of knowledge, scientists, philosophers, teachers, wise leaders, and guides who investigate the secrets of how nature works and who seek to improve life on Earth.

What is the nature of reality, the substance of what we and the world are made of? Is it all physical, mental, or a mixture of both? Dr. Tony Nader has written a deep and lengthy book proposing that “Consciousness Is All There Is.” The book begins with the views of the ancients who were roughly divided between “materialists” who purport everything is physical matter and the “idealists,” asserting everything is ideas or thought.

Nader falls into the latter camp, championing the ancient Vedic tradition that proclaims everything, even that which is outside of space and time, is only consciousness. Nader delves deeply into the subject, covering consciousness from ancient beliefs up to the latest research in quantum physics that reality is based on an underlying unified field that precedes energy (neither matter nor energy). The author makes the case that this is the field of “pure Consciousness.”

The book tackles a difficult subject because it presents an explanation for reality that is contrary to how we experience our daily lives. It requires a reader to think outside of their usual thought patterns. Some of the ideas are hard to grasp and I read the book twice to try to understand it better. It is an esoteric subject that the author ably explains. He is very qualified for the task and writes well on a topic he has been studying much of his life. The book is thorough and comprehensive, and the author’s claim that he has “broken new ground” appears valid, at least with regard to his cogent explanation of the parallels between “unity Consciousness” and the underlying quantum field that precedes energy. Also, the many pictorials are great aids in supporting and explaining his points as well as the bold print summaries throughout the chapters.

But he’s presenting ideas that seem almost beyond words and when trying to nail down fuzzy abstractions, he becomes repetitious. For example, the concept of consciousness consists of a subject, an object, and a linking process: “I see the tree.” The author refers to this as “three-in-one” or “triples,” and it’s the kernel of what consciousness means and was repeated at least five times in the book. This may have been unavoidable with such an abstruse subject matter, but the book seems to falter elsewhere.

He says his consciousness model can be verified in three ways, through direct experience (“available to everyone”), scientific research, and historical records. But only the physiological results from “transcending” meet the true test of science and the same can be said of any stress-reducing activity such as running. Also, Dr. Nader may have overreached because his purpose appears to be manifold. The book is much more than a formal treatise, it proposes practical applications for its central idea, and this is where I found it weakest.

The author proposes that people may attain “pure consciousness” through transcendental meditation and that regular “transcending” produces verifiable positive effects in individuals, communities, and society. The so-called “Maharishi Effect” has been validated in scientific studies. However, the author seems to inflate the power of “transcending” by proposing it as a remedy for the issue of world peace. Throughout history,

“…peace treaties and peace-keeping organizations have failed to prevent war for a simple reason: they have not addressed the root of the problem” which is the “underlying societal stress that gives rise to wars.”

I think most people would say there are greater causes such as pride, greed, and the lust for power.

The author carries this argument further, saying all the problems faced by our world such as climate change, threat of nuclear weapons, environmental crisis, poverty, discrimination, and more can be solved by the methods presented. We must reduce…

“…the stress, tension, suspicion, and fear that pervade world consciousness, and we must promote amity and cooperation among nations, groups, and individuals. The Maharishi Effect accomplishes both.”

While some readers may find this to be simplistic, others will be impressed by the tremendous amount of research and deep thought that Dr. Nader has put into this book.

Part 1 and 2 were more scientific and I'm not much of a scientist but I did enjoy and learn from Parts 3, 4 and 5 on higher levels of consciousness

description

Full disclosure: I am not one to willingly pick up and read a philosophy-centered book, especially not if I’ve got a fictional option on hand. My preconceived notions on the types of people who are likely to choose a book of this genre (pretentious and a patronizing attitude towards those who may not lean into deep rumination) have never aligned with my own self-characterization, therefore dissuading me from taking on the challenge of attempting to explore certain topics. The phrase “Imposter Syndrome” would be an apt label to illustrate the emotions I would feel surrounding themes such as consciousness, neurology, or even the mere mention of anything relating to the field of quantum physics. From memory, I can only recall a handful of books from these categories that I have felt confident enough to read to completion and have felt all the better for it. This here adds to my tally. The element of intimidation is immediately expelled at the very beginning of this book. The title hints at this important message and the opening chapters confirm it to be true: consciousness truly is for everyone, as it exists pervasively, and the methods and tools required to experience it in its purest form lie within the pages of this book for anyone willing to pursue them at their own pace. The holistic approach taken by the author means that there is a little bit for everyone in this book, satisfying the interests of the philosophically, scientifically, and spiritually inclined alike.

Besides the messages conveyed by the author’s words, the formatting further highlights the sentiment of inclusivity. From the illustrations to the pull quotes, one’s attention is captured and refocused in the short break-like moments it takes to look over these elements. This isn’t to say that the writing itself is monotonous, not at all, but breaking up continuous paragraphs of writing helps readers process the information better when provided with short gaps to briefly rest and internalize the information presented to them, especially when the subject matter can be taxing on the mind as a few of the explanations proved themselves to be for me. The personal anecdotes attached to some of the lessons transformed their conceptual nature into something tangible; sometimes subjectivity inspires action from those who might remain otherwise unconvinced by theoretical concepts.

We are beset in a world that is swiftly spiraling into becoming a world populated by people who are devoid of spiritual, physical and moral wellness leading to many of us experiencing life as often chaotic and disheartening.

Meanwhile, offering another way of approaching life which is sure to lead to a happier and more balanced existence, is an empowering text by award-wining author, and expert on Vedic Knowledge, Dr. Tony Nader, titled, Consciousness Is All There Is: How Understanding and Experiencing Consciousness Will Transform Your Life.

As a matter of fact, within this book Dr, Nader shares a work of great scholarship and wisdom. This is a text brimming with eye opening, mind altering, information and would be best defined as the blueprint necessary for understanding, creating and living one’s best life. Divided into five sections this tome of learned stature includes deep explorations of the aspects of consciousness through the following general scopes including the topics of; What is Consciousness, The Consciousness Paradigm, Higher States of Consciousness, Technologies of Consciousness and Implications for Human flourishing.

Moreover, within this work is a wellspring of pertinent information necessary for the approach towards transcendence. Each section dutifully presents a well written compilation of thoroughly detailed sub-topics of consciousness, including elements of modern science, philosophy and Vedic wisdom. A profound teacher, Dr. Nader delves into complex transcendent subjects with a relatable but scholarly approach, including but not limited to; the four states of consciousness, king sleeping, dreaming, the brain as a transducer of consciousness, the consciousness of animals, plants and computers, and transcendental consciousness all of which work towards fomenting the steps to a radical departure from the normative mindset of reality which is that the brain creates consciousness, to realizing that, in reality the opposite is the case where consciousness is the basis for everything in life and creates reality.

Ultimately, Consciousness Is All There Is: How Understanding and Experiencing Consciousness Will Transform Your Life by Dr. Tony Nader, made for a phenomenal read. This is a large compendium of knowledge which leaves an indelible impression on the psyche, chock full of extensive detail, simple meditative exercises and pertinent illustrations and diagrams. This was not just an average read that one can peruse through. In fact, it is a thesis meant to be savored and studied because what it ultimately offers is divine guidance, not only to those curious minds but to those dedicated to transcending into a better life a better life. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to read this dynamic book as it has guided me into expanding my awareness of wellness through a higher state of being and my comprehension of reality, as well as my spiritual knowledge base. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend reading it. I look forward to exploring Dr. Nader’s other scholarly works.

Perhaps I expected this book to be different than what it was, and evidently what was advertised. I was hoping to get some practical discussion of TM techniques alongside an explanation of its value. Instead I got a 500 page introductory brochure for the TM organization, which will give you all their easy-to-learn secrets when you sign up for courses which can cost upwards of $1,000.

To me, this business model seems to clash with the intentions of Dr. Nader’s altruistic Transcendental Meditation movement. In his book, TM is purported not only to improve your life and your connection with the world around you: it is the key to world peace and the solution to most of the world’s major problems. There a whole chapter is devoted to TM’s ability to remedy major global issues, including climate change, nuclear annihilation, racism, and COVID-19. Keep in mind, these assertions do not require most of the population to practice TM; all these benefits would need a fraction of a fraction of the population to get involved with the program. On top of all of this incredible global benefit, the practice is also marketed as easy to learn and immediately applicable to real-world use. All this to say, if TM can save the world, and to see this major paradigm shift become your aim, why isn’t the information free? As I haven’t tried the program myself, I can’t disparage the effectiveness of the meditation process. But keeping the key to solving global strife behind a considerable paywall seems morally dubious at the least.

All that aside, I have qualms with Dr. Nader’s approach to explaining Consciousness, Life, the Universe, and Everything. Finding scientific explanations for the conscious experience is difficult due to its very nature of being subjective: our current understanding of the scientific model relies on objective, repeatable, and observable data. Dr. Nader makes a valiant effort to link breakthroughs in the subjective results of quantum mechanics research to the fundamental patterns of the universe, but his more extreme ideas land about as well as someone trying to explain their mushroom trip to you. His neuroscience background does not lend enough credibility to make up for the lack of concrete proof of his hypothesis- it just doesn’t land. He’s got some interesting ideas and bits of wisdom in here, but I have a suspicion that they aren’t his observations and are borrowed from the Vedic practices he bases his paradigm on.

Consciousness Is All There Is delves into the profound and often elusive topic of consciousness, proposing that consciousness is not merely a part of our existence but the very foundation of it. The book intertwines ancient wisdom from traditions like Advaita Vedanta with modern scientific perspectives to present a cohesive theory that consciousness is the fundamental reality. By exploring the depths of consciousness, the author seeks to address essential questions about life, the universe, and our place within it.

The author effectively blends philosophical discussions with scientific explanations, making complex concepts accessible to a broad audience. I found the book compelling, especially in the sections where ancient spiritual teachings are linked with contemporary scientific discoveries. This fusion provides a holistic view of consciousness that is both intellectually stimulating and spiritually enriching.

One of the standout elements of this book is its treatment of the relationship between consciousness and reality. The author convincingly argues that our perception of the world is entirely dependent on the modes and patterns of our consciousness. This idea is elaborated on with examples from quantum mechanics and neurological studies, making it clear how our understanding of reality is shaped by our inner experiences.

The book also ventures into visionary territory, particularly when discussing the potential of consciousness to resolve global challenges like war and environmental degradation. This perspective inspires readers to think about the far-reaching implications of the consciousness paradigm. The author’s bold ideas encourage readers to imagine new possibilities and consider how a deeper understanding of consciousness could lead to innovative solutions for some of the world's most pressing issues.

Consciousness Is All There Is is a thought-provoking exploration of the nature of consciousness and its implications for our understanding of reality. It is an excellent read for anyone interested in the intersections of science, philosophy, and spirituality. The book’s integration of ancient wisdom with modern science makes it particularly appealing to those seeking a deeper understanding of both the self and the universe.

In "Consciousness Is All There Is," Dr. Nader tells us that all problems in life—individual, societal, global—result from lack of higher consciousness. He also explains how we can develop our consciousness to rise above problems and suffering.

Even though consciousness is now THE issue in philosophy journals/classes, and even neuroscientists, physicists, and AI engineers are jumping into the game, all the main books about consciousness—Goff, Chalmers, Dennett, etc.—leave the big questions unanswered and no one has yet satisfactorily explained consciousness or resolved what’s called "the hard problem” (how does the physical give rise to something seemingly immaterial?).

“Consciousness Is All There Is” presents a new and timeless paradigm in which consciousness assumes its rightful place as primary in nature. Dr. Nader lays out the different schools of thought and summarizes the ongoing discussion of “the hard problem.” He presents a satisfying, cogent framework.

This book brings clarity and hope, because to understand consciousness is to understand ourselves.

Know that - by knowing which, all things may be known. I think that this is the first truly comprehensive work that encompasses what the ancient Vedic Rishis have known for thousands of years, what religion has believed for millennia and what physics has finally discovered in the last 200 years - about the essential nature of reality. But then, I've been doing Dhyana (deep meditation) for nearly 50 years, the Yoga Sutras in Samyama for nearly 45 years and have studied at Maharishi University for the same period I've been practicing Samyama. Then there were the courses, "Maharishi's Total Knowledge and Higher States of Consciousness", "Brahma Sutras in the light of Maharishi's Total Knowledge", "Upanishads in the light of Maharishi's Total Knowledge", the Revelatory nature of Maharishi's Total Knowledge" in the last few years. That plus "The Physics of Quantum Coherent States", Quantum Physics, "The Physics of Thermodynamic Equilibrium Systems" and a few others. However, I believe that ANYONE and EVERYONE will benefit from reading this book by the brilliant Tony Nader.

"Consciousness is All There Is" is a comprehensive scholarly exposition that answers those fundamental questions of who and what we are and what is the nature of Reality. Consciousness is the underpinning of all Reality and is the essence of all existence. Our awareness enables us to be conscious of the outside world, but Consciousness is the eternal state of our Being. We are all able to access Pure Being, the foundation of all Reality, by a technique called Transcendental Meditation. Through this technique, we are able to enjoy pure Consciousness which is associated with improved physical and mental health and increased creativity and intelligence. This pure consciousness increasingly becomes integrated into our normal consciousness until we reach Universal Consciousness. This is an excellent book which I would highly recommend.

I have recently been introduced and am currently practicing transcendental meditation. I was given this book by my instructor and have found it to be very helpful in explaining both in theory and in practice what is pure consciousness. I highly recommend this book for those interested in practicing meditation 🧘‍♀️

Excellent book until Chapter 19. Engaging and enjoyable, complex concepts are simply explained. From Chapter 20 and on, it just preaches and preaches. It’s almost straightforward advertisement for TM (Transcendental Meditation).

So far this is one of the best books, ideas I've read. Fascinating read. Makes me re-think what I have always assumed......A total collapse!

The first few chapters were going great, then BOOM. Pseudoscience, very technical nonsense, and finally, TM enters the picture. This teaching is basically what the book is selling.

Further thinking, there was a lot of solid information, just not enough truth.

I gave the book a rating of two because the book is so difficult to understand and because "IF" I understand it correctly the author is saying that : We are a figment of God's imagination. If that were so there would be no need for a bible. Manifest in part means to: to prove to be evidence of, apparent to the senses, to be struck by a hand. When we meditate we go beyond thought where consciousness lies. God tells us to "Be still and know that I am there." I think we are very much flesh and blood, made in His image and He resides in our consciousness that is manifest in our physical brain and everywhere else. I do believe in essence consciousness is all there is. There are mysteries that we'll never unveil. Again, I may have misunderstood the book since you'd have to be a scientist to understand it . I wish the author could have written it in a way that would be easier to understand.
