Rate this book
A new era of Daredevil beings as writer Dennis O'Neil takes over writing duties on the Man Without Fear!

Daredevil enters a new era when the iconoclastic Dennis O’Neil takes over the writing reins. Making sure the transition goes from strength to strength, the incomparable Klaus Janson remains aboard for a stint penciling, inking and coloring. Each tale is a gritty exploration of humankind’s temptations and broken aspirations, topped off with a touch of Marvel magic. Meanwhile, Kingpin consorts with a Yakuza group who seek to bond Bullseye’s shattered spine with adamantium. It’s a saga that teams DD with Wolverine and takes him to Japan for an issue #200 rematch with the man who murdered Elektra. Also featuring the debut of penciler William Johnson, the first appearance of Micah Synn and Ralph Macchio and George Pérez’s fan-favorite Marvel Fanfare Black Widow serial.

Denny O’Neil was the writer on Daredevil when I first started reading the book as a young whippersnapper, so I have fond memories of his run, the beginning of which is collected here.

There is definitely some filler here and a palpable sense of Marvel being unsure how to follow Frank Miller’s much-lauded time on the book but largely it’s pretty good stuff.

The low point is probably the team-up with Wolverine, largely due to the terrible artwork, and the high point is the beautiful story from Marvel Fanfare #7, also included here, which never fails to bring a tear to my eye.

3.5 stars. Would’ve been quite a higher rating if the Black Widow Marvel Fanfare issues weren’t included.

Frank Miller has left the series, someone has to take over. It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

Denny O'Neil takes on the task and... fails. He strings together uninteresting storylines—with the exception of the one in which DD pursues Bullseye to Japan, with a conclusion that echoes the famous #191—and takes a while to capture DD. It's dull, clumsy and disappointing.

And I'm not even talking about the artwork: after a few good episodes by Klaus Janson, we have to suffer through the abominable William Johnson, a hack if ever.

The book concludes with four episodes of Marvel Fanfare about... Black Widow. Couldn't care less. At least George Perez draws them, but that's cold comfort.

With the departure of Frank Miller, Daredevil took on a slightly different slant. The first story (written by Alan Brennert) sets the stage with a human-interest tale, and there are several other similar stories (including one where Daredevil tries to find a blind child's seeing-eye dog). Then there's the hunt for the rebuilt Bullseye, and finally a four-part solo adventure for The Black Widow. Great stuff all round.
