Remember that little kitten that Yukichi and Yume found? Well, after his loving family adopted him and named him Dia-chan, he went viral on social media, and now he’s famous! He’s making appearances on TV and even has his own photobook. However, Yukichi totally forgot to inform Yume about this, so he’s going to have the nice old lady next door tell her about what happened with Dia-chan!
Hitsuzi Yamada (山田 ヒツジ, Yamada, Hitsuzi) is a Japanese cartoonist, best known for the manga series The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today, which debutted in 2018.
Big cat rescued little cat, and if there’s anything the internet loves, it’s a little cat doing something amusing.
This will be brief. Not because it’s bad, but because of the consistency. Saku is a bit of a mess, Yukichi takes care of her, the other supporting cast members get to do some stuff as well.
It’s not the best it’s been, but still fun. Dia-chan, the kitten that Yukichi rescued with Yume, turns out to love imitating his bigger inspiration and that gets Dia lots and lots of attention. Rather than being jealous, Yukichi is an incredibly proud parent here.
Nishina, the shop girl with a crush on Saku, has her cousin visit and we get to see the supermarket through the eyes of somebody who has yet to experience all the crazy that Yukichi brings to that store.
If you wanted big plot swings, forget it. This is slice of life with a big cat and that’s pretty much what I want from it. It’s all very similar, but there’s nothing wrong with that in this case.
The last of the ‘Yukichi as a kitten’ backups is in this volume and this is why I rounded up to four stars at the end. These have been amazing and so wonderfully silly (the guest appearances this time make sense and are great), but with a super strong emotional core.
3.5 stars - the bulk is good; the kitten stuff is truly great and gives me the feels every time. It’s not as strong in some places, sure, but kittens win every time.
This one was a lot better than the last one!! When the series has little dips for me, where I enjoy it less, the volume after that always seems to exceed my expectations- and volume 7 totally managed to uphold that tradition.
To start, the artwork in the first chapter was just simply beautiful. Hitsuzi Yamada’s artwork is always fun and cute, but the use of screen tones really blew me away. We were starting off strong! Then we focus on a on Saku’s co-worker friends, which I always enjoy seeing. There was an also a dental visit part with a sweet scene that almost made me cry. I’m not sure why, but it happened, lol.
After that, we go into maybe my favorite part of this volume- Yume staying over at Saku’s boss’s house. I don’t know, I always find his character SO funny, and it was no exception here. I also think Yume is adorable, so that helps. I love the way her hair is drawn, it looks so soft.
After this portion of the book, it’s ✨ sea bunny ✨ time!! Now, maybe you could question if the main reason I enjoyed this volume so much is because it includes a lot of everything I like about this series- Saku’s boss, Yume, and Sea Bunny. If you guessed that, you might be right… but rather than just simply including my beloved characters, they used them well! The jokes were strong and made me laugh. Yukichi’s obsession with Sea Bunny will probably never not be funny. He reminds me too much of a K-pop stan (I understand they are Japanese, lol). The tv episode showing sea bunny looked very pretty.
Then, back to the little kitten Yume and Yukichi had once saved, Dia-Chan! I love how Dia went viral. It’s pretty believable, though!! I’m not going to go into every single thing the chapters focus on anymore, because I already touched on my main points, and that would just take too long. The volume does end with the last extra of kitten Yukichi- very emotional and cute!! I loved it very much.
Overall, this volume does a great job at utilizing the comic format of this series, as well as having many fun jokes and moments. Reading it just makes you happy, and I know I’ll be picking this one up to randomly re-read, as well. If you haven’t started the series yet, go pick up the first volume, and give it a read!! It’ll be well worth your time.
(This book contains language, alcohol, and some comical blood (no injuries really happen, it’s a pretend scenario and isn’t meant to be scary) I would give it an age rating of 13+!)
This volume is cute and *almost* readable by itself if you somehow missed ALL THE OTHER BOOKS somehow, given that really the only exposition you NEED is spoiled by the cover (woman has HUGE CAT).
I took off a star because it focuses a LOT on Saku's complete ineptitude around anything "domestic"—when she's somehow a "legend" at work for getting things done, and not JUST for what she's inadvertently given credit for from Yukichi's handiwork. I know it's comedy, but it's kind of sad making so much of a joke about her incompetence.
But then Dia-chan gets massive internet credit for copying Yukichi, so... that's really adorable, actually, especially when Yukichi is very "proud parent" about it rather than jealous.
This volume also actually scared me a little with the "This will be the final installment..." part before I read "...of the Kitten Yukichi Extras arc." Phew! I mean, I should have known better since I had to specially order THIS volume when I realised I had missed it (books 8 and 9 are on my shelf), but my memory sure is a thing sometimes, haha.
Another wholesome entry in this wonderful series! I really enjoy the ongoing themes of love, support and perseverance. It's really a nice series to read when overcome with daily tasks that end up piling up. This volume in particular was very touching as it showed the village that our protagonists are building through their kindness and work. Taking care of yourself helps to take care of others and it's very nice to see how this volume handles such a theme. I am disappointed that the backstory extras will be no more by the time volume 8 rolls around but the author did a wonderful job neatly wrapping all of it up. The art is always a delight to view. The cuteness of the animals is always captured well and the food looks delicious!
probably my least favorite in the series so far but still cute and fun! loved seeing the rescued kitten dia-chan(the tanaka's prince, shiny diamond-chan) and yukichi bond. dia-chan was so cute walking on his hind legs and wearing an apron. 😭 3.75-4 ⭐
I did not read this book in Japanese, I just couldn't make the English version come up on my computer.
This one isn't bad, it's just a rehash of things that have mostly already happened, so I wasn't as fascinated. The cat and its person's interactions are cute. I thought Yume and her uncle's sequence was funny.
I'd read another, but I'm not holding my breath for it.
2/17/25 Reread, after reading the previous 6, and found it more entertaining, especially the large end section about how Yukischi and Saku started out. There's funny bits with both Yume and her uncle, and Nishini and her boss.
I got this after watching the anime. I can say it sticks close to the anime. I love reading Dai Chan and Yukichi the best. The boss and his niece arc was sweet as well as the cousin arc.
