The title character is perhaps an avatar for Wisdom. Especially on topics usually left alone by so-called great thinkers – work and houses, for instance – he animates like Chesterton might have. And as much as he speaks of universal commingling of joys, he talks of a modern individualism.

While some of his words might have come from Jesus, many would be understood in at a tribal pantheistic synod. I suppose his ship might be death, which he tells us is one with life.

“If these words be vague, then seek not to clear them.”
