Nat is plagued by Doubt Gremlins in this latest addition to the Nat Enough graphic novel series. How to deal with the DGs is shown in the body of the novel. Maria Scrivan also provides a handy "How To" list and some tips at the end of the book. Nat is having difficulty deciding what club to join after school. Her friends all seem to know what will suit them best and are thriving -- for the most part. Nat and new friend Luca try to form a comic club, but run up against some obstacles from the administration. The Doubt Gremlins try to take over. As they find solutions, the DGs are banished one by one. Along with this story, there is a SuperNat Comic Book included. As a bonus, Nat's pets, Cat and Treat, also provide lots of comic relief along the way. They are one of my favorite elements in this series. Check it out!

A big thank you to Graphix and Edelweiss+ for a DRC of this title in exchange for an honest review.

Once again, Maria Scrivan lets Nat give middle school readers some great advice mixed into a realistic graphic novel. Nat has battled self-image demons and found herself mired in some tricky friend drama in three previous installments in this series and she finds herself plagued by those same issues again, but this time, new friend Luca gives them a name—gremlins! And with his help, not only does Nat fix her temporarily stalled friendship with Liv, but she and Luca form a club that reflects their interests as well as positively impacting others in their school community. 4th-6th grade students will easily connect with failed efforts to find a school activity that fits and certainly will know what it’s like to feel different interests pulling two friends apart. Nat for Nothing is a great reminder that two people can still be best friends even when sometimes doing different activities, we all have those gremlins that tell us we can’t and we don’t have to listen to them. Perfect for elementary and middle grade lovers of graphic novels. No profanity, sexual content, or violence and characters represent a wide variety of interests and skin tones,

Thanks for the digital arc, Edelweiss.

Hey there! This is Charlie P! I am eleven years old and I read books to raise money for charity. I want to help moms pick out books that their kids will like! Here is another review by me!

Nat For Nothing was more focused on finding your thing than friendship. I thought it was really funny and also kind of sad. It also had some fun learning aspects to it to like making comics and being a good friend. Kids 8 to 11 would like this book.

I liked this book as much as I liked all of the books in the Nat Enough series. Excellent books for middle graders struggling to find their place or dealing with friend issues.

E ARC provided by Edelweiss Plus

While Nat is still struggling to maintain a relationship with Lily, (in Forget Me Nat and Nat for Nothing), she has good friends in Zoe and Flo. Her school year gets off to a rocky start, though, when she sleeps in late and ends up biking to school in her bunny slippers. She also has a literal run in with new student Luca, and later has to show him around the school. There is a new principal who is big on rules and short on fun, and everyone is required to participate in a school club. This is hard for Nat, since all she wants to do is draw comics, and hasn't vibrated to any of the activities offered, even finding art club judgey and boring. When Zoe takes up Volleyball and Flo throws herself (and her sock puppet Argyle) into raising money for a buddy bench, Nat finds herself at loose ends after school. Her parents find plenty of chores for her to do, but that's not as much fun as hanging out with her friends. When Luca suggests starting a comic book club, she isn't quite sure it will work, and the proposal is shot down twice by the principal. Still, the two try to gather members, and even use the club to help Flo raise money for her buddy bench. Luca also helps Nat with her ever present anxiety, labeling her negative thoughts "doubt gremlins" and telling her not to listen to them. Eventually, their efforts pay off, and they have an official club!
Strengths: My students love this series, and since so many of them struggle with their own "doubt gremlins", they will be especially fond of this installment. Friendships often fall apart in middle school, and Nat's on again, off again relationship with Lily is very realistic. My favorite part was Nat's parents making sure she was productive when she was bored, but I'm sure younger readers will prefer the rock painting, club founding, and Luca!
Weaknesses: I didn't quite understand how the clubs were working. The librarian lets the comic book club meet in the library but then throws them out when the group is larger and too loud; if this is after school, the noise wouldn't be a problem, but it didn't seem like the librarian was the official sponsor. Young readers won't care, but I got stuck on that detail.
What I really think: I'd like to see a little romance thrown into this series, since middle schoolers have that on their mind a lot. These brightly colored books are a big hit with fans of all of the realistic graphic novels with nervous or struggling main characters, like Chmakova's Berrybrook Middle School series, Libenson's Emmie and Friends books, and Telgemeier's work.

Do feel I have to note that while buddy benches might be a big hit at elementary schools, I have never heard a middle school student do anything but make fun of these. Of course, Flo is rather quirky and unique, so it's right in character for her to champion this idea.

Nat is a middle-school who just can't seem to catch a break. School is rough, but that's nothing compared to the struggles she has to go through with friendship, fitting in, self-confidence (specifically the lack of which!), and the joyless new principal at school. After she makes a new friend, she devotes herself more and more to drawing and starting a comic club at school. Only, this causes increasing worries about growing away from friends, and her own abilities.

So.... this is certainly not a bad book, by no means. Heck, If it had come out 10 or 20 years ago its novel exploration of middle school life and problems would have been an absolute delight. The big weakness of 'Nat for Nothing' is, this kind of book is no longer a novelty. Graphic novels about middle-school boys and girls grappling with ordinary problems, often with a semi-autobiographical tangent about art or creativity, are all over the place these days. And hey, that's a good thing, but, unfortunately, 'Nat for Nothing' isn't in the top ten list of this flourishing genre. It's probably not even in the top ten for such books from 2023. To stand out in the field, one of these books would need to either add something new to the dialogue, or be really stellar in every way. 'Nat for Nothing' is neither. The story and message are fully predictable, and the art and humor are mediocre at best.

Really, nothing about it insults me, heck, my ten year old liked it. But there are so many more stellar choices, I really don't see any reason to choose this particular book over them.

I couldn't tell which book was the first of the series just from the shelf, so I grabbed one at random. This one is, of course, book 4, but it reads well enough as a standalone story (even if it feels like it alludes to events in the past).

At its core, the story is about the ups and downs of friendship, particularly in maintaining it when differing interests drive a wedge between friends. It's harder as we age, since making friends becomes more than just showing off a random thing and VOILA!, BFFs. This book nicely navigates the path toward growing one's friend circle, though, something I wish I had when I was a younger reader (especially since it was such a steep jump from my high school's graduating class of 72 to COLLEGE).

I wish I had a comics club in school, also; even the Cat Kid Comic Club would've been a blast! I guess I had the second best thing, though: a library card (haha).

Recommended for younger readers going through some friendship pains. Heck, recommended for OLDER readers going through some friendship pains, though I know the non-negotiables get a little more dire in adulthood.

This is the continuation of the Nat Enough series of middle grade graphic novels, that is sort of realistic, if you don’t count talking dogs and cats.

Nats friends have all signed up for clubs, but none of the clubs appeal to her. She doesn’t do drama, she doesn’t do sports, she isn’t a math wiz. She likes to draw.

And so the doubt gremlins plague her, as she fails at all the clubs she tries, and all her friends are off doing other things. THen she meets a new boy, who also loves to create cartoons, and so the decide to form a club for themselves.

I love that doubt gremlins are introduced into the story, because we all have inner critics, and it is good to let kids know this is a common problem, and to learn to not listen to them.

And, as always this is all about friendships. Yes, you can have best friends even if they are in clubs you don’t belong to. And you can have friends who are boys, that really are just friends.

Cute continuation of this series. Funny, with solid points.

Humor and truth for children of all ages here! 🌟❤🌟❤🌟❤🌟❤🌟

I've enjoyed all these books and Nat's adventures! The first two introduced Nat and her circle of friends with their interactions. In the third they go to camp together where we find Nat conquering fears. As said, I've enjoyed them all but book 4, Nat for Nothing is my favorite! It is chock full of life lessons and lots of camaraderie. Even Natalie's pets, Cat and Treat, get into the act along the way and are very funny. Maria Scrivan is not only a versatile artist with her characters and colors, but her story ideas bring humor to serious subjects and life lessons. Kids of all ages go through the same things Natalie does and we all certainly need some humor these days. Thanks Ms Scrivan! Highly and happily recommended! 👉❤👈

Cute addition to the series!

Very much appriecated the doubt gremlins. I actually learned about my anxiety this way and still sometimes picture my bad thoughts as these little monsters that I have to tell to go away or lock up somewhere else in my mind. The bonus story is a great way for other kids to see this too.

Love that Nat is learning and growing throughout her middle school years, realizing when she needs to apologize and allowing herself to be upset by things. The art style is reminiscent of Schulz’s which I love.

This was awesome! This whole series is great!

A great book about negative thoughts, friendship, what it means to be a friend, and leadership.

In the back there are also tips on drawing for graphic novels.

And I think I may be interested in rock painting now because of this book.

I hope more books are coming in this series because it has to be one of the best middle grade graphic novels I read.

Nat for Nothing is the first Nat book I’ve read. It’s right on target for middle-school with the friend drama, homework and self doubt. Nat has trouble finding an after school club that she’s interested in, but with her new friend Luca, tries to get the principal to approve a comics club. Luca teaches her how to defeat the “Doubt Gremlins” which create negative self-talk. Enjoyable and fun with some good lessons about friendship and self-confidence.

I like how the book was about friendship and how it said like don’t quit and trust yourself whenever you do something and don’t let anything bother you when you do it because if you always do it to the end then you always win it and I like how, when they broke their friendship, they got back together and got friends But I have an idea to kind of I change the story like when friends back with zoe I just wonder why Natalie did not get back to friends with Lily.

This book was just as entertaining as the others in the series. I like that this one taught a lesson about doubts and negative thoughts. Nat’s friendship trouble’s are starting to get a bit old and feel a bit repetitive at this point though. I think the author needs to find new conflicts and challenges for the main character to experience. I also didn’t really like the “comic at the end of the book” thing. It is not necessary and doesn’t really add much.

Nat's friends are all signing up for various clubs and sports, but she's struggling to find her thing. Can she vanquish the "doubt gremlins" and form a club of her very own? Another wonderful installment in the Nat Enough series!

“Just because doubt gremlins get in your head, that doesn’t mean you have to believe them.”
I’ve found some of the previous entries a bit dull, but this one is the best of the series so far. The author gets middle school friend drama well. The part about negative, intrusive thoughts or “doubt gremlins” was really well-done and easy to understand.

4 stars (I really liked it)

This was my favorite of the series so far. It is relatable and gives great advice about dealing with "doubt gremlins." I will definitely be purchasing for my school library (probably the others in the series as well but this one you can read without reading the others).

I found Nat to be a little annoying in this but at the same time, I can relate to her and understand her. The fact that she wants to start the comics club is very heart-warming. The hard lessons she had to learn was very valuable. I did not like lily because she became unfriendly towards Nat again. Overall a decent read.

It's a new school year for Nat, and everyone is expected to join a club. Nat is having an issue finding the right club to join with no luck, so she decides to keep to herself. But when she's charged to be a buddy to a new student, they decide to create a new club. The only issue is convincing the new school's principal that it's a worthy venture.

I LOVE this book!
I loved that the author talks so much about doubt gremlins! It helped me even as an adult. I love these books and I am so excited to introduce them to the middle schoolers in the library I work at!
The artwork is so adorable and I LOVE treat and cat they are hilarious.
Best graphic novels for middle schoolers. Light hearted and meaningful at the same time.

2.5 besides, the first one, which I thought was phenomenal, the rest have been kind of mid. This one I like the idea of the gremlins and giving them faces and overcoming them, but other than that, I just didn't think it offered much.
Also, finding something you like
in the midst of trouble is always a good thing.

When all the kids in school are encouraged to join a club, Nat doesn't feel like any of them are right for her, so she and a new kid try to start a comics club. Meanwhile, Nat's BFF becomes friends with her ex-BFF bc they both joined volleyball. Will Nat survive this episode of middle school? As usual, Nat's story is relatable and adorable, especially the chapter openers with her dog and cat. Another fun comic.

It’s been a little while since reading the previous titles in this series, but it was easy to instantly get back into the cast of characters. I love how each chapter starts with the POV of Nat’s pets, too.

I’m this graphic novel, Nat deals with the voices in her head telling her bad and mean things. I like that they are called doubt gremlins. I love how this graphic novel teaches kids how to get over doubt gremlins. I really wish I’d had something like this to read as a kid.

I LIKE these books for what they teach young readers (this one about taming your doubt gremlins), but at the same time, I just don’t like Natalie. It almost feels like there’s never really any growth with her. She’s super self-centered. I don’t know. It’s a mixed bag for me!
