Rachel Gibson, why do you always fall just short of perfect for me? You had me in the palm of your hand, loving everything about this book...for 95% of the way. And then you go and blow it by making the ILY's come out all of a sudden, and then spend no time developing them. And then when you could tie things all up and answer some of my questions with a nice juicy epilogue...I get nothing. I know you should leave the reader wanting more, but jeez, you gotta give me something.:(
So yes, I was adoring this book, plowing through it in one day, eagerly turning the pages. Loved the heroine (Sadie Hollowell), 33 year old realtor with 'daddy' issues; daughter of a (deceased) beauty queen and a gruff, remote, rich elderly Texas rancher. Sadie's back in Lovett, Texas to reluctantly be a bridesmaid for her younger cousin's wedding. Sadie doesn't visit her father much since they have a sort of distant, strained relationship. But she's in town and determined to make the best of it, even though she's dreading fielding questions from nosy town folk and relatives about her love life and why she still isn't married. If only she could rent a date to take to the wedding with her...maybe that would keep the questions at bay.

As Sadie makes her way home, she notices a sexy stranger (former Navy SEAL Vince Haven, 36) standing along side the road by his broken down truck. Sadie gives him a lift into town, they have a few sparks, and sadie impulsively asks him to go to the wedding. Vince says "no", but he shows up at the reception and gives Sadie one hell of a "surprise".:)

Thus begins the "friends-with-benefits" arrangement between Sadie and Vince. Vince is in town to take over his aunt's convenience store, at least for a while; Sadie's in town for at least the weekend. Neither Sadie or Vince is in the market for a relationship--Vince, because he just doesn't do relationships, and Sadie because she's tired of dating men who are emotionally cut off. But a FWB relationship? Why the heck not?
I just love the way Rachel Gibson writes. Her stories are filled with quirky characters, laced with humor, and the H/h relationships are always steamy. I remember reading about Vince in Any Man of Mine--he is Autumn Haven's responsible, older brother-- and hoped he would get his own book. Vince is sort of drifting now that Autumn is about to get remarried and no longer needs him as a father figure for her young son, so he decides to pay his (very colorful) aunt a visit in Texas. Vince is suffering from some survivor's guilt (and a disturbing side effect) after what happened to a SEAL buddy of his in Afghanistan, and RG delves into what happened to Vince to force his retirement from the teams. Vince is emotionally closed off (just like Sadie's father) and has never really cared what any woman thought of him--until Sadie. I loved seeing their relationship evolve from 'friends-with-benefits" (and ohh, what benefits!) to something a lot more. And I particularly loved Sadie--she was strong, determined, relatable, funny, lusty--and dead set against letting herself fall for Vince. But how could she help herself? I was rooting so hard for these two to make it!

But then it seemed like RG was getting close to the page limit, and condensed a lot of stuff into a small amount of pages. I wanted to see her explore the developing feelings between Vince and Sadie, but she wrapped everything up too fast! I'm not sure if Sadie and Vince even had a HEA, that's how abruptly the story ended.:( I'm guessing it's just a HFN...maybe one day RG will revisit Lovett, Texas and we can find out what happened after the 'I love yous'. For that abrupt ending (with no epilogue) this 5 star read became a 4 star read.

I've been a big fan of Rachel Gibson's books for a long while. The last few have been questionable and this one I had a very difficult time getting into and staying with it. Sadly, “Rescue Me” is a bumpy ride that goes nowhere fast and doesn’t measure up to the ones that came before! I find it difficult to express such negative remarks towards this author’s work after having been the recipient of so many of her pleasurable reads over the years. I’m very appreciative and happy that Rachel Gibson recently released her witty and lively novella “Crazy On You” to ease the pain of this one.
Although you may find this hard to believe,
I didn't hate it BUT
I didn't love it either, AND
there were certain parts I liked BUT THEN AGAIN,
there were also parts I didn't like.
“Rescue Me” is a prime example of one of those books that “coulda shoulda woulda” been better if . . .
Vince had been a more likable and convincing hero. To be blunt, I just didn’t like him. In my memory, he’s the worst male lead I've ever read in one of Gibson’s books. If Vince thinks Sam LeClaire is a jerk and asshat, he needs to take a good long look in the mirror at himself. His self-image could stand a major overhaul. The things that come out of his mouth are rude, crude and not so heroic. And his actions don’t help him out much either. He is so proud of his “assets” but the proof in his abilities just wasn’t there in my opinion. It appears that Vince just didn’t get a good dose of this author’s usual high standards in character building. I truly am shocked to find myself with these feelings. After all, Vince is a gruff and tough former Navy SEAL. These types of alpha-males holding secrets close to their chests most often are my favorite kinda guy and a big hit with me.
On the other hand, Sadie made her mark. Her character is well-developed, likable and believable. The strained relationship between Sadie and her ailing dad is adeptly depicted. Sadie lost her mother at a young age and without her mother’s guiding hand became somewhat of a departure from the norm. Sadie is easy to relate to and understand. She doesn’t follow all the rules in the prescribed order for Texas beauties. Her fashion sense is all wrong and she’s thirty-three and never-been-married. Bless her heart! I liked this strong, spunky, and sassy character, who carried herself well throughout the book.
There’s the hint of plenty of sexual chemistry between Sadie and Vince from the beginning when he has truck trouble and she gives him a ride. But those sparks fizzle when too much time is spent on subjects having no real impact on the storyline rather than focusing on the main characters. The “Friends With Benefits” package is pushed too far without the much-needed relationship development in the “friends” arena. In my opinion, the story was off-balance with far too many pages separating interactions between our leading couple. Vince and Sadie spent more time apart than they did together. Readers never experience the feeling that the “one-night-stands” between Vince and Sadie progress to anything more meaningful. The whole thing is suffering from the syndrome known as “going through the motions without any emotions!”
Towards the end, Vince does man-up with some actions that offered hope that he might really be the hero we all love to read about. But this time around, the Rescue Squad arrived too late offering too little. Even the happily-ever-after suffers from an abrupt ending that feels rushed. It had the potential for being award-winning but once again lost steam and just doesn’t make it up and over the hill! I did give it points for a good try though.
In spite of it all, I find myself already looking forward to the next Gibson book with hopeful expectations. I would like to see Rachel Gibson, the award-winning RITA author of the past, return full force.

This is our inaugural Rory Curtain Review at Young Adult Anonymous.
This is one of the most enjoyable romances I've read. It was funny, it was modern, and MOTHER OF GOD, it was HAWT. Navy SEAL Vince Haven is so hot, I ended up pumping my bestie, who was in the Navy until he was kicked out for being gay (fuckery), over dinner for info on just how swoon-worthy he should be. I am nothing if not thorough!

Sadie Hollowell is 3 things a woman from Lovett, Texas shouldn't be: 33 years old, single, and flat haired. She left Lovett at 18 and created a nice life for herself selling real estate in Phoenix. A younger cousin's wedding pulls her back to Texas.
Vince Haven is a 36 year old ex-SEAL who left the service after an incident in Afghanistan blew out 60% of his hearing in one ear. Since then, he's invested in businesses while traveling and taking care of his sister and nephew.
Sadie sees Vince stranded on the side of the road into Lovett and ends up reluctantly offering to help -- but not before demanding to see his license and calling his info into her assistant. You know, in case he ends up being a "homicidal maniac, or worse. A Democrat." Even my true blue heart giggled at this because Rachel Gibson sets the light tone early. There's a ton of banter between Sadie and Vince and Sadie and the colorful townspeople. Sadie and Vince find themselves thrown together, yada yada yada, and Vince ends up saying "Hooyah!" during sexytimes. I, along with Sadie, died laughing. There are more sexytimes, more laughs, and some emotional scenes.
One thing that really stood out about this book was how young and modern it felt. There's a Rachel Zoe reference! I usually loathe all reality shows, but I was literally* addicted to the first season of The Rachel Zoe Project. There's also a character named Becca Ramsey, who I choose to believe was a nod to the Baby-Sitters Club character.**
I also liked that Rescue Me was significantly shorter than my usual romance books. It was a fun, quick read.
I think fans of Shannon Stacey and Susan Elizabeth Phillips would like this book. I am definitely checking out more Rachel Gibson books and, ahem, more books featuring Navy SEALs. HOOYAH!

Me: There's a scene in the book where Vince picks up a sledgehammer with one hand and just tosses it aside. Real or not real?
Him: Real.
Me: Can you tell a Navy SEAL from regular Navy guys?
Him: Mags, I don't think you're understanding the ELITE ATHLETE part. For example, in the Navy, we did an exercise where we had to carry 40 pound weights in each hand and then stand on our tiptoes. Navy SEALs have to do that AND jump over a bench.

4 ½ stars – Contemporary Romance
Rachel Gibson is one of my go-to, comfort contemporary romance authors when I need a light, fun read with a good dose of humor and emotional substance that’s not too fluffy or overly angsty.
Rescue Me returns to Lovett, Texas, population 10,000, and pairs former Navy SEAL Vince Haven, who’s the brother of Autumn from Any Man of Mine, and Sadie Hollowell. Vince and Sadie have hot chemistry but there isn’t enough time devoted to their actual romantic progression/relationship development. It just seemed like most of the revealing of their characters was done independently, and I wanted a bit more of them actually together.
Still, I really enjoyed Vince’s and Sadie’s characters, the humorous, clichéd Texas references, and the colorful secondary characters, and the estranged relationship between Sadie and her father was realistically portrayed and heartfelt. The ending was much too abrupt with a somewhat hasty HEA, especially since I’m always greedy for an epilogue, but I’m hoping that means we haven’t seen the last of small town Lovett, Texas.

Ne umdum ne buldum kitabı oldu bu birazcık. Kitabı daha eğlenceli bekliyordum. Ama kitap bana durağan geldi. Hani kitap içinde olay denilen bir şey yoktu. Kapağına falan kitabın adına bakınca eğlenirim biraz kafamı dağıtırım dedim ama tık yoktu. Uzun zamandır kitap okuyamıyordum doğru düzgün gece gülerek okurum diye hevesle başladım ama hevesim kursağımda kaldı. Yazar güzel işlenecek bir konuyu harcamıştı. Adamın birden aşık olduğunu anlama sahnesi bence saçmaydı. Hani hoşlantı olabilir ama aşk? Sanmıyorum. Ama sondaki hali tatlıydı. Saddie'ye ne desem bilmiyorum garip geldi biraz bana. Sanki hayatı haybeye yaşayan bir tipti. Genelde bu tipleri sevmem. Yazar sonda bir gizem yaratmaya çalışmış ama olmamış bence. Hadi gizem olucaksa da son beş sayfaya bırakılır mı? Saçmalık. Bunu okumak yerine daha tatlı bir hikaye okuyabilirsiniz. "Hep Seninle Olacağım" veya ben çiftlik hikayesi okuyacağım illa diyorsanız çok güzel ve aksiyonlu bir çiftlik hikayesi olan "Benimle Saklan" kitabını okuyabilirsiniz.

I loved this one as much the second time as the first. Serious love. If you read no other Rachel Gibson book, try this one. It has everything you'll need to provide a few hours of escape.

You’ve heard that saying, “everything I know about life I learned in XX”, and you fill in the blanks. So, let me ask you, can the “blank” be a romance novel? Well, probably not. How ‘bout this, “everything I know about life has been recapped in a romance novel”? Yep, I think this works. And, this book is powerful for me because it validates a very hard learned lesson...
Love. We each define it in our own way. And, when we love someone, we can’t dictate, 1) whether they love us back, 2) and if they do, how they love you back. Will they do it in an acceptable way [acceptable to you - because in this equation, you are it]? Because we deserve to be loved the way we want to be loved and if they can’t do it, and they either don’t want to or really can’t do it, then we need to move on. This is the lesson I was reminded of as I read this book. A very hard learned lesson.
Three things I liked about this book:
1.) Sadie. Her name is Mercedes Johanna Hollowell and she is not perfect. She is 33 and she is seems to be okay with who she is. She is heading home to be in a wedding for a very distant cousin and isn’t terribly happy about it. She just knows every other question out of every person she see’s will be, "Sadie, dear, are you married?" Bless her heart! She finds Vince stuck along the side of the road on her way into the rance. Now, she knows there won’t be another car passing by for many minutes, and possibly an hour or more, so she stops to “help a guy out.”
She didn’t need a man for his money. She needed him for things she couldn’t do for herself like lift heavy objects and knock boots. Simple, but it was always shocking how many guys weren’t that great at knocking boots. Which was just baffling. Wasn’t sex their number one job? Even above actually having a job?

Once again she’d fallen for an emotionally stunted man. This time she’d fallen harder and deeper, but as with all other stunted men who had ever taken up space in her life, she’d get over him.
2.) Vince. God you love a tough guy who knows his mind. He is honest about what he wants or doesn’t want in a relationship. He is straight up. He is just passing through and has no intention of “tangling” himself up for life. He and Sadie come to an agreement; Friends with Benefits. She is good with this. He is down with it too. Perfect? Right…
What the …? Vince had been exposed to real disturbing shit in his life, most he stored away in the black locker of his soul, but his wrinkled aunt, heels to Jesus, with Alvin was right near the top of his disturbing shit list.
3.) I love this author. She is consistently good. She has a formula, but I wouldn’t say it is “cookie cutter”. She has a strong, tough guy. He may or may not have emotional issues, but he will have commitment issues. You have a heroine who has been hurt or unlucky in love. She adds a touch of humor and pragmatism that speaks to my heart. I can see a bit of me in at least one character in her books. Sometimes it may even be a secondary character. In this one in particular, I saw Sadie as someone who has learned every lesson life has taught her the hard way. Me! Me! Me! She is pragmatic. In other words, she wants to believe in a world made up of rainbows and butterflies, but knows where there is rainbows and butterflies, there is probably a storm coming later in the day and she is okay with it. You have to have the storm for the rainbow to come around – all good.
This author is one of my “go to” authors when I want to decompress. She rarely, if ever disappoints me. I only have one more of her books to read and then I’ll have to start reading them over. This book, this series, is one of my very favorites by her. Several of my friends tell me this one was a miss for them, not sure why because I loved it.
What three things did I not like or not appreciate:
1.) Nothing I can think of … it charged me on all cylinders.
2.) Maybe …? Nope.
3.) Not a damned thing.
A thoroughly enjoyable read from start to finish. I hate these books aren’t longer. I love them. I love where they take me and I ABSOLUTELY love how they make me feel. Warm. Fuzzy. Knowing something is right in my world because I was able to experience this simple pleasure.

I loved this one as much the second time as the first. Serious love. If you read no other Rachel Gibson book, try this one. It has everything you'll need to provide a few hours of escape.

You’ve heard that saying, “everything I know about life I learned in XX”, and you fill in the blanks. So, let me ask you, can the “blank” be a romance novel? Well, probably not. How ‘bout this, “everything I know about life has been recapped in a romance novel”? Yep, I think this works. And, this book is powerful for me because it validates a very hard learned lesson...
Love. We each define it in our own way. And, when we love someone, we can’t dictate, 1) whether they love us back, 2) and if they do, how they love you back. Will they do it in an acceptable way [acceptable to you - because in this equation, you are it]? A really good romance and overall story. Even the side stories, that have nothing to do with the romance or introducing new characters, were well-done without feeling like they were taking away from the romance.
The Texas twang and expressions were laugh out loud hilarious. It had a small town homey feel like Bon Temps in the show True Blood where everybody knows everybody. The set-up of the story reminded me of Julia Quinn's Bridgertons series in that the stories appear to be light and funny but there's some major drama that gives real meat to the novel.
The steam is well-done and it was never a sex with no story scene as some contemporaries can be. There are some parts where you just cry and cry and that's saying something if you normally don't cry when you read. These scenes could have easily turned into a seen-it-all-before-sap-city thing but they were very well-written so that never happened.
Having read a few of Gibson's other books (including the fan fave "See Jane Score"), the writing always seemed average, nothing special but here the story is tighter and the humor flows better.
For someone who's not a fan of straight up contemporaries this was a nice surprise.

3 1/2- 4 Stars
Rescue Me is one of those feel good, comfort books that are pretty standard coming from author, Rachel Gibson. It is part of a series, but can definitely be read as a stand-alone. So if you have read RG before, and I have read most of her books, that is exactly what you get with Rescue Me- a charming and OOOh so sexy read.
There was no villain, no big mystery or twist, but I was still hooked because of the characters and the fast moving story. It was sweet with an H&h that had very strong sexual, “make me tingle” chemistry. Even though the plot’s premise was light, Vince and Sadie sex scenes were hot and heavy.
The LOL moments came fast and furiously with many stereotypical sayings about Texas and good ole small town people. My favorite was “The higher the hair, the closer to God.” I totally related to Big Hair since I grew up in the 80’s with Paul Mitchell Spritz spray, let’s just say God and I could see eye to eye for many years.
Sadie was born into an “old money”, Texas family. She was a “late in life” baby, born to a Texas beauty queen and father who struggled to show affection, but still a good guy. Her parents loved each other and Sadie, but her mother dies when Sadie is five years old. Sadie is a beauty and tries to follow in her mother’s footsteps, but she is half her father and therefore is stubborn, a loner, and a rebel. Sadie leaves home at 18 to find a new life and only returns occasionally.
Vince was introduced in Any Man of Mine as the hot headed, protective brother (AMoM is Gibson’s hockey series; good series -love my sports heroes). He is an ex-Navy Seal, successful, but yet not sure what direction to go in life. There were some random flash backs to his Seal life that I just skimmed, I have to say this was the only slight lull in the story.
My favorite part of the book was the sexy dialog and spicy chemistry, the few scenes were hotter than some erotica I have read. Vince was a Dawg, who told it like it was, no sugar coating or romantic words in his mind, he just wanted sex. I loved him! As he put it, “I like foreplay, but I am more of an insertion guy.” His raunchiness was great; he didn’t spoon, he called it nuts to butts.
If you are in a mood to just relax and enjoy or you need a break from some of the intense thinker stories that we have all have been reading, you can’t go wrong with this one or pretty much any Rachel Gibson book.

I love Rachel Gibson's writing style. One of the draws for me is the humor that is embedded along with the romance. Added to this is the unique, quirky characters she gives along with a hot, sexy read. She did not disappoint with this one!
Thirty three year old Sadie Jo Hollowell has come home to Lovett, Texas for her cousins wedding. Having moved away fifteen years earlier, her visits are few and far between. She's only planning to be here for the weekend, but unusual circumstances changes those plans.
Vincent Haven, thirty six years old, former Navy Seal and an alpha hero I lusted after. As his quirky aunt says, "You're as big as hell and half of Texas" and... "good-lookin' as original sin, too." Yep, he was all that and much more! He came to Lovett to visit his aunt Luraleen and even when his plans change, he still knows his days there are short term at best.
This was a fun, sexy read full of quirky characters along with a heaping of southern charm and dialect. There is sadness but enough laugh out loud moments that made this a winner for me.
I loved both the hero and heroine and the chemistry between these two was explosive. They really believed they could have a friends with benefits relationship. No strings attached and all that! I enjoyed watching these two fall.
What I wished for was more time with this couple. The story ended too abruptly and an epilogue was needed. Still, this was a very enjoyable read and I look forward to more.

This is my favourite Rachel Gibson book so far! It was sweet, steamy and emotional. Although it's the third in a series, it can also be read as a standalone. But I'm so intrigued by Lovett, Texas and it's hilarious residents that I'm adding the others in this series.
I love reading about misunderstood characters, love reading about two people that never planned on love but found it anyways, but especially love reading about finding that one person in the least likely of places.
Sadie has always wanted to escape Lovett, but coming back for a cousins wedding was like opening up Pandora's box. Thinking she'll only stay a weekend, her whole life is about to change. Vince is a retired navy SEAL coming to Lovett to see his aunt. He's used to moving around, never settling too long in one place. A fateful run in with Sadie convinces him that maybe, just maybe setting down isn't a bad thing.
Vince was so incredibly sexy as a man in denial over his PTSD. His SEAL days may be over but the disturbances aren't. Although he thinks himself not a nice guy, he was wonderful. He was there for Sadie, patient, sweet, kind and understanding. He was worth more than he ever believed of himself. I loved Sadie, trying to be strong and always after her fathers approval. I loved how the romance built between her and Vince. Their sexual banter was fantastic!
The only thing is sometimes RG doesn't finish her plot lines. There were a couple things left unresolved. But the biggest thing? WHERE'S THE EPILOGUE?? Yes, it ended beautifully but almost prematurely. I wanted to know what happens after that perfect exchange of feelings, what's in store for Vince and Sadie? I understand they're together but give. Me. Something. Else! Maybe we'll find out in the series continuation?
Regardless, I loved this story, loved Vince and Sadie and hope to continue this series!

As much as I enjoy Rachel Gibson's books, I was growing bored with her Hockey sports series, so I was delighted that Rescue Me appeared to be a stand-alone. Okay, it does tie loosely into the series, but only peripherally, so I'm okay with that. This isn't quite like the books Ms. Gibson wrote before her sports series. Her early books, like the ones set in Truly, Idaho always made me laugh out loud. The humor from those books wasn't so evident here. This was more straight romance than rom-com. Still good though.

Rescue Me by Rachel Gibson (Audio Edition)

This is the first book I have read by Rachel Gibson and it won't be the last! I laughed, and sighed and was intrigued enough to keep listening till it was over. Vince and Sadie were a great match together, both looking for nothing and found something. Their banter was terrific right from the start and I loved how Sadie kept adding more texas slang to her vocabulary the longer she stayed.
The narrator was easy to listen to and had enough voices that I could differentiate between the characters, I would gladly listen to her again.

This was an EXTREMELY slow moving, slow starting book. Actually it moved so slowly without much point to anything that I nearly didn't finish it. I needed to prod myself into finishing. And for one of Ms Gibson's book's, that is nearly unheard of. The synopsis makes this sound like a fun light read, when in fact this had a lot to do with post traumatic stress disorder on Vince's part and unresolved daddy issues on Sadie's part.
As for this being romantic---I don't think that this book was. They considered them selves to be "friends with benefits" but all I could think of is that they never talked or connected, they ONLY had sex. Granted it was mind blowing, but not conducive to being friends.
Sadie meets Vince when she comes up upon him with his car broken down and offers to give him a ride. This was actually a fairly funny scene. Sadie, not wanting to be in her cousin's wedding without having a date asks Vince if he would go with her and he says "no". Yet he shows up anyway and they nearly bump boots in the brides room. Things finally progress from there and then they are like two bunnies in the spring clover.
Tragedy befalls Sadie and Vince sort of steps up to the plate, but leaves her in the lurch when deeper things finally come out. Now none of the things that actually make up what little plot there is doesn't happen until the book is at 75% (Kindle edition) so it doesn't leave much room to finish fleshing out the story.
There is a bit of a cliff hanger that should be leading us to the next in what I can only assume is a series. I have read the first two and they were way different. Although I do see that Ms Gibson is taking her books into new waters, and she tends to be writing about some serious issues now. This fact needs to be taken into consideration when choosing this novel. Do you want to be entertained and read something light, or do you want something with a heavier back-story like this novel?

Small-town romances are popular right now. Unfortunately, the setting is one of my least favorite for a romance novel if the town is full of quirky residents that play a large part in the story. Rescue Me fits the sub-genre, but it thankfully has more going for it than the quirky characters that intrude upon the story. Gibson has given the book two main characters that are interesting and just a little different. Sadie feels like a real person. She makes choices I can understand and isn't super-human. She is conflicted about her relationship with the town and with her father. She's capable, but hasn't breezed through life. She's a little wounded, but not broken or tragic.
Vince is a little more stereotypical as a former Seal who lost buddies and now has some PTSD symptoms (which he denies is PTSD). But like Sadie, Vince's "woundedness" isn't overwhelming and the reader doesn't view him as a tragic character. He's a capable, productive, and mostly believable character. Both Sadie and Vince seem like people I wouldn't mind getting to know.
The folksy sayings and small-town mindset of the locals feel cliched. Thankfully, there are no truly hateful people to deal with, something that gets old fast for me. Mostly, the setting of the book feels stale. And while the language and the frequent references to the setting remind the reader we're in Texas, the story could have been placed just about anywhere without a lot of editing.

The folksy sayings and small-town mindset of the locals feel cliched. Thankfully, there are no truly hateful people to deal with, something that gets old fast for me. Mostly, the setting of the book feels stale. And while the language and the frequent references to the setting remind the reader we're in Texas, the story could have been placed just about anywhere without a lot of editing.
Rescue Me is enjoyable and worth reading, even if the small-town setting isn't my favorite.

I just don't care for this type of book anymore. If it hadn't been on audio, I might not have finished it. The hero was a jerk, particularly calling her a PT when he satisfied her after he came on to her, and she did not return the favor right then and there. The Texas culture and Texans were stereotyped and over the top. I couldn't even guess how often the phrase "Bless her heart" or a version of that was uttered. I did like Sadie, and liked that she seemed to have as much power in the relationship as the alpha hero.
In fairness, part of my dislike may have stemmed from the fact that the book was written over 10 years ago and wasn't up to speed with today's mindset. But then, I don't read a lot of these. It was just in my audible Library from long ago for some reason and it sounded fun. In truth it was, but I need more

I love Rachel Gibson. She always gives me what I want in a Romance. A great story, hot eomance and characters I can root for.
Sadie has come home to Lovett, TX to be a bridesmaid for her much younger cousin. At 30 she is facing the age old question that all aunts, even me, ask our unmarried nieces - when are you going to settle down? Sadie left home at 18 and has only made infrequent visits home. Her mother died when she was 5 and her relationship with her father is, well, complicated.
Vince is on his way to visit his aunt when his truck breaks down outside Sadie's family ranch. She gives him a ride to town and there is a instant attraction. Vince is a retired SEAL and has some issues of his own. He views himself as not relationship material, because he has never had one.
When Sadie and Vince hook up they agree it will be casual and brief. Two months later, Sadie has a tragic event and so does Vince which blows their no strings relationship to pieces. Sadie has to face some heavy events alone and Vince comes to realize that his life is not complete without Sadie.

One of my current TV show obsessions is the CW's Hart of Dixie. There's something magical about small country towns where everyone knows each other and they have these wacky parades and holiday events. Nobody else captures the charm of these small towns like Rachel Gibson. She always manages to write the best love stories that are romantic, light and witty, yet still manage to tug at your heartstrings.
Rachel Gibson once again takes us to Lovett, Texas. Rescue Me is about Sadie Hollowell and Vince Haven, who we have briefly met in Rachel's previous books (Crazy On You and Any Man of Mine). Sadie was a miracle baby, but her mother died and left a 5-year olf girl to a father who had no idea what to do with her. As a result, Sadie ends up being raised by nannies and sent to Charm School. By the time she turns 18, she leaves Lovett, Texas and only comes back to visit her father every couple of years. To say their relationship is distant is an understatement.
Now, 33-year old Sadie is back in town for her cousin's wedding. On te way into town, she sees a guy with a broken down truck on the side of the road. She decides to rescue Vince Haven, who is an ex-Navy Seal, and gives him a ride into town.
Although it's clear that both Sadie and Vince have some serious issues to deal with, it's also very clear that they have some serious chemistry between them. But Vince makes it clear that he doesn't do relationships. Since Sadie plans to stay in town for only a short while, they agree that they are the perfect candidates for a one night stand. But Sadie's father has some serious health issues, which force Sadie to stay in Lovett longer. They end up becoming friends with benefits, with more emphasis on the benefits part than the friends part. After Vince comes to Sadie's rescue a couple more times and they spend more time together, they start to also progress on the friends part. But will they let each other be truly rescued?
Although I mostly read YA books (with very few exceptions), Rachel Gibson is my all-time favorite author. I have every single one of her books, have read most of them at least twice, and have read my favorite three (Truly,Madly Yours; Tangled Up In You and It Must Be Love) at LEAST six times each. Rachel Gibson once again creates a perfect chick-lit romance book. Packed with plenty of Rachel's trademark witty dialogue and scorching hot scenes. There's even a hint towards the end of the book as to who the heroine of the next book will be, and like always, I can't wait to read it! Rachel Gibson proves why she is one of the best romance writers and she will continue to be on my automatic-read list. I'm very excited to read the next book in the Lovett, Texas series! Rescue Me is a must-read for anyone looking for a hot romance book!

-While other girls went home and practiced their etiquette lessons, Sadie shucked her dress and ran wild. As a result of her mashed education, Sadie knew how to waltz, set a table, and converse with governors. She could also swear like a cowboy and spit like a ranch hand.
-He was the kind of guy who made Sadie uncomfortable. The kind who wore leather and drank beer and crushed empties on their foreheads. The kind who made her stand a little straighter. The kind she avoided like a hot fudge brownie because both were bad news for the thighs.
-"In fact, I'm afraid to raise my arms."
"Why?"
"I don't wanna fall out of my dress."
He smiled and glanced down at her out of the corners of his eyes. "I promise to catch anything that falls out."
-"Usually I'm better with my hands." His gaze slid to hers and he raised the bottle to his lips. "But you know that."
Yeah, she knew that.
-Women appreciated that and always wanted more. But not Sadie. She didn't want more, and he didn't know how he felt about that. He should be thrilled. It was perfect. She was beautiful. Interesting. Good in bed, and only wanted to use him for sex. Perfect.
So why did he feel mildly pissed?

Sadie Hollowell left Lovett, Texas at the age of 18 and has only been back for the occasional holiday gathering with her father who she has never gotten along with very well. A young cousin’s wedding is what has Sadie coming back to Lovett this time around. Forced by familial obligations to stand up in a wedding she plans on driving in and driving right back out ASAP. When Sadie helps Vince (Autumn’s brother from Any Man of Mine) with a ride into town after his truck breaks down, she discovers paybacks are sometimes sexy and her stay in Lovett is suddenly looking up.
Both Sadie and Vince have their issues, but their chemistry with each other is never in question. They have an easy friendship, a hot sex life and a relationship that is fun to read without all the games and drama that usually bogs down the road to happily ever after. Sure their road to HEA isn’t all paved with sunshine and roses, but the bumps they do encounter are more normal and true to life.
The book ends with a hint at the next story and heroine and I am ever eager to get my hands on that book!
Rachel Gibson has been on my automatic buy list since I discovered her writing many years ago. This book only further cements her place on that list. I laughed, I cried and I flew through this book in one afternoon. I simply couldn’t put it down, nor did I want it to end. This is one of those books I will probably read and reread over and over.

What a letdown! I've been there for each and every one of Gibson's once-a-year books. This one is so not worthy.
I hate to pile on, but I've got so many complaints about this book that laying them out with bullet points is the only way to go.
* Small towns modeled on 1960s television sitcoms no longer exist. Oh, wait! They never did. Mayberry is not real, people. Why do contemporary writers perpetuate this fantasy? It's old and tired and not pleasant.
* All of the female secondary characters are played as jokes, and not in an affectionate way. The older set is "quirky" which is lazy writer's code for nosy, meddlesome, half senile, and shouting because they're half deaf. The younger set is shallow, dumb, and poorly educated. It's no wonder that the heroine has no friends. She's so much better than the town riffraff.
* Heroine's daddy emotionally neglected her for 33 years. She forgives him in 33 seconds.
* Heroine aggressively persues hero for "no strings sex." Yup, that's all she wants. Heroine falls apart and goes into a super snit when hero reacts badly to her premature ILY declaration.
* The romance is tepid. I was not engaged.
* Narrator Kathleen Early really, really overdoes those quirky old ladies. I cringed.
I look forward to the release of a new audio production of my favorite Gibson SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE. It was her first book published in 1998. I loved it.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Shame on me!!!! Because I liked this writer's first two books a lot, I keep falling for the next one. And the next one and the next one. And I keep getting fooled. This one is no different from the last dozen or so. I usually like, or at least try to like, the characters in the books I read. The people in this book have nothing going for them except looks. And sex. That's all they seem to think about, talk about, care about, act upon, and base every decision on. Then they get an attack of .... what? Conscience? Remorse? I don't know, but that is supposed to transform everything into LOVE? The two main characters of Rescue Me have nothing in common, yet because they are good in bed together, they "fall in love"...in the last chapter, no less, and end up going to bed...again.
I really get tired of women ogling male "packages", men basing female character on the size of breasts, both wanting only one-night stands, and everyone running away when one or the other expresses something beyond "give it to me, baby!"
I do not object to sex in my reading material, I just like to have a story attached to it. Call me picky.
No matter what you hear, or where this book is shelved, it is not Romance.

Such a sweet love story! Def rescue me!! A hot SEAL with a gorgeous cowgirl. I love Texan style love story! Rachel Gibson is one of my fav authors. He never fails me!

I'm not sure how I felt about this one. It was just ok for me. I love Rachel Gibson, but this didn't feel like one of her stories. I kind of feel like every time we were getting somewhere, the story changed to a different part. So we start to get to know Sadie and see who she is and suddenly we're on Vince. We get a bit of him and suddenly back to something else. Plus they're not really a couple the whole book.
The I love you is held off to almost the last page--which isn't unheard of for RG (Nick waits to the end to tell Delaney how he feels in Truly), but I never really felt the connection. This is a FWB story, but I never got the friends part.
All in all, it's not bad. There is good dialogue and I enjoyed the setting. RG loves to write a-hole heroes that redeem themselves. Vince is not really that guy, but he's nothing great eiher. He just doesn't stand out.

Series note: This is book #2 in the Lovett, Texas series. It takes place 8 years following the previous installment, and aside from a couple of minor references to the characters, there is no other connection. That said, this book is also related to the Chinooks Hockey Team series. The hero, Vince Haven, is the older brother of the heroine in Any Man of Mine. While it can be read as a standalone, I recommend reading the Chinooks book first. It one of my favorites in that series.
On to the review . . .
Rachel Gibson's writing is exceedingly engaging, and the quirky town of Lovett with its oddball residents and their crazy shenanigans makes for very entertaining reading.
Sadie and Vince's romance steams up the pages. While it is obvious from the start that their "no strings attached" relationship will develop into something more, it is fun going along with the ride as these two emotionally challenged people realize that their feelings for one another are more intense than expected.
My only issue, as indicated by other reviewers, is that the ending is somewhat abrupt and the book is in dire need of an epilogue.
In sum, highly recommended for lovers of small-town romances, snarky heroines and sexy former Navy SEALs.

"Ever been to Lovett, Vincent?"
"No."
"You're in for a treat." She pulled on a pair of sunglasses and stepped on the gas. "Put on your seat belt, please."
"Are you going to zap me with your stun gun if I don't?"
"Possibly. Depends on how annoyed I get by the seat belt alarm between here and town." She adjusted the gold aviators on the bridge of her nose. "And I should warn you in advance, I've been driving all day, so I'm already annoyed."
He chuckled and belted himself in. "You headed to Lovett yourself?"
"Unfortunately." She glanced at him out of the corners of her eyes. "I was born and raised here but I escaped when I was eighteen."
Sometimes being raised in a small town is like having a huge extended family. They take no shame in asking questions of which the answers are none of their business, and they know way too much about you. You don't have to commit a crime or do something outrageous to get their attention. All it takes is being over the age of 25 and unwed. Thus, when Sadie was asked to partake in her much younger cousin's wedding she was really not looking forward to going home to the small town of Lovett, Texas. She was 33 and would probably always be a bridesmaid and never a bride, and that was fine with her. She wasn't looking to get tied down. She'd even considered renting a date for the event just to curb any talk, but decided "the logistics of renting a man in one state and transporting him to another hadn't been real feasible."
Yes, it wouldn't be long before she'd be asking for someone to 'Rescue me'. Not long at all...
Sometimes in life we look for love, sometimes it finds us and sometimes it rescues us when we didn't even know we needed to be saved.

Mercedes Johanna Hollowell, aka Sadie, and her father have always had a strained relationship. When she was younger she'd sought out his attention in many ways, the most outrageous being to dye her hair pink and wear black lipstick. Over the years she came to the realization she would never be the main focus of his life and stopped trying. He would never give her the kind of father/daughter relationship she craved and she'd come to accept it. Now she was an independent woman who'd made her own way in life and become a successful realtor. It came as no surprise that when she showed up for the wedding, the first time she'd been in town in 5 years, that her dad had made other plans than to stick around when she was there. Such was her life.
Vincent, aka Vince, is a former navy seal who was injured on a mission which killed one of his best friends. Due to the loss of hearing in his left ear, he was discharged. A seal whose five senses aren't all functioning at 100 percent is a potential liability. I must say Vince is a bit crude at times about what he wants and this might bother some. He is a very straightforward type of guy and makes no excuses. He's flawed in that his time with the Seals left him with some emotional scars. He's not the same man who entered the service and is haunted by what happened. He's come to Lovett to visit with his aunt who said she had a business proposition for him. He isn't sure how long he will stay in town.
Neither Vince nor Sadie were looking for love. Neither was looking for something permanent. They both agreed they would have a very shallow, no strings attached sort of relationship. Sometimes it's the unexpected things in life that are the best.
Some (but not all) of my favorite lines, quotes, moments, etc:
- "In charm school I was taught to always make people feel welcome. It was pretty much a number one rule." Her fingers lightly raked his stomach and chest as she pushed the shirt up. "Do you feel welcome, Vince?"
- "Do you have a boyfriend, Sadie Jo?"
"No...I don't really have time for a man right now."
"Are you just being notional? Are you one of the women who thinks you don't 'need' a man?"
Growing up, whenever her thoughts and ideas had seemed different from the herd, she'd been accused of being notional. "Well, I don't 'need' a man." There was a difference between wanting and needing.
..."Gene Tanner is available," Ivella said. "Bless her heart."
Gene Tanner? The girl who wore a crew cut and flannel all through high school?
..."She works for the park services and probably has a good health plan."
..."Dental, do you think?" She asked to be a total smart aleck.

So what's the connection between 'Rescue Me' and 'Crazy on You'? Well, Sadie goes to Lily's salon and Lily ends up being Sadie's stylist. The two talk about Lily's relationship with Tucker. Hmmm...I wonder if this series is going to end up having a sort of 'six degrees of separation' type link between the characters? Could prove interesting.
This was a highly enjoyable story. While Sadie and Vince may appear perfect on the outside, each has some internal flaws/fears which make them more real and easier to associate with. I liked how each could clearly see the signs of their growing feelings for the other, but tried their best to deny them until they couldn't anymore. Overall I gave this one 4 out of 5 roses. There was a nice blend of romance and humor with a dash of drama mixed in. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one scores a STEAM - too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed.

"Unfortunately." She glanced at him out of the corners of her eyes. "I was born and raised here but I escaped when I was eighteen."
Sometimes being raised in a small town is like having a huge extended family. They take no shame in asking questions of which the answers are none of their business, and they know way too much about you. You don't have to commit a crime or do something outrageous to get their attention. All it takes is being over the age of 25 and unwed. Thus, when Sadie was asked to partake in her much younger cousin's wedding she was really not looking forward to going home to the small town of Lovett, Texas. She was 33 and would probably always be a bridesmaid and never a bride, and that was fine with her. She wasn't looking to get tied down. She'd even considered renting a date for the event just to curb any talk, but decided "the logistics of renting a man in one state and transporting him to another hadn't been real feasible."
Yes, it wouldn't be long before she'd be asking for someone to 'Rescue me'. Not long at all...
Sometimes in life we look for love, sometimes it finds us and sometimes it rescues us when we didn't even know we needed to be saved.

Mercedes Johanna Hollowell, aka Sadie, and her father have always had a strained relationship. When she was younger she'd sought out his attention in many ways, the most outrageous being to dye her hair pink and wear black lipstick. Over the years she came to the realization she would never be the main focus of his life and stopped trying. He would never give her the kind of father/daughter relationship she craved and she'd come to accept it. Now she was an independent woman who'd made her own way in life and become a successful realtor. It came as no surprise that when she showed up for the wedding, the first time she'd been in town in 5 years, that her dad had made other plans than to stick around when she was there. Such was her life.
Vincent, aka Vince, is a former navy seal who was injured on a mission which killed one of his best friends. Due to the loss of hearing in his left ear, he was discharged. A seal whose five senses aren't all functioning at 100 percent is a potential liability. I must say Vince is a bit crude at times about what he wants and this might bother some. He is a very straightforward type of guy and makes no excuses. He's flawed in that his time with the Seals left him with some emotional scars. He's not the same man who entered the service and is haunted by what happened. He's come to Lovett to visit with his aunt who said she had a business proposition for him. He isn't sure how long he will stay in town.
Neither Vince nor Sadie were looking for love. Neither was looking for something permanent. They both agreed they would have a very shallow, no strings attached sort of relationship. Sometimes it's the unexpected things in life that are the best.
Some (but not all) of my favorite lines, quotes, moments, etc:
- "In charm school I was taught to always make people feel welcome. It was pretty much a number one rule." Her fingers lightly raked his stomach and chest as she pushed the shirt up. "Do you feel welcome, Vince?"
- "Do you have a boyfriend, Sadie Jo?"
"No...I don't really have time for a man right now."
"Are you just being notional? Are you one of the women who thinks you don't 'need' a man?"
Growing up, whenever her thoughts and ideas had seemed different from the herd, she'd been accused of being notional. "Well, I don't 'need' a man." There was a difference between wanting and needing.
..."Gene Tanner is available," Ivella said. "Bless her heart."
Gene Tanner? The girl who wore a crew cut and flannel all through high school?
..."She works for the park services and probably has a good health plan."
..."Dental, do you think?" She asked to be a total smart aleck.
- "When you lock everything down tight so that the pain can't get out, you also keep good stuff from getting in."
So what's the connection between 'Rescue Me' and 'Crazy on You'? Well, Sadie goes to Lily's salon and Lily ends up being Sadie's stylist. The two talk about Lily's relationship with Tucker. Hmmm...I wonder if this series is going to end up having a sort of 'six degrees of separation' type link between the characters? Could prove interesting.
This was a highly enjoyable story. While Sadie and Vince may appear perfect on the outside, each has some internal flaws/fears which make them more real and easier to associate with. I liked how each could clearly see the signs of their growing feelings for the other, but tried their best to deny them until they couldn't anymore. Overall I gave this one 4 out of 5 roses. There was a nice blend of romance and humor with a dash of drama mixed in. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one scores a STEAM - too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed.

Good escapist book. Easy read, enjoyable, but nothing that pushes it over average. I did like that the 33 yr old MC was mature enough and had had enough experience with dating to know what she wanted, ask for what she wanted, and not put up with someone who couldn't give her what she wanted or would treat her badly. She was smart, strong and independent and I loved that because she felt like a very authentic version of a current 30-something woman.
