How do we respond to the sheer wonder of the incarnation of God's Son? Mary responded to the announcement of the birth of the Saviour with a song of praise. Her words were deep and with feeling - truly an experience which had affected her inner being. Yes, she was confused at first but she was willing to submit to God. She praises God for His character and for keeping His promises even when circumstances seemed to contradict that with the long wait over centuries for the Messiah. Martyn Lloyd-Jones meditates on Mary's Song of Praise and applies it to our lives. He looks at our response to God and how God deals with us. We find that the new birth is all of God and nothing of ourselves. "If we will listen to her, and sing with her, we can grow to see the offspring of the woman in all his might and all his fragility, in his justice and in his mercy. This book will drive you to that Virgin's Song-and beyond it, to the gospel, in ways you don't expect by walking you through the tension between Bethlehem and Armageddon. In the end, I decided not to take a break from Revelation for Christmas. And it was the Magnificat that changed my mind, for many of the reasons the great Lloyd-Jones lays out with such clarity in this book. The Mother of our Lord set the tone when she sang of God's mercy to his people, of his faithfulness to his covenant promises." Russell D. Moore ~ Dean of the School of Theology, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky
David Martyn Lloyd-Jones was a Welsh Protestant minister, preacher and medical doctor who was influential in the Reformed wing of the British evangelical movement in the 20th century. For almost 30 years, he was the minister of Westminster Chapel in London. Lloyd-Jones was strongly opposed to Liberal Christianity, which had become a part of many Christian denominations; he regarded it as aberrant. He disagreed with the broad church approach and encouraged evangelical Christians (particularly Anglicans) to leave their existing denominations. He believed that true Christian fellowship was possible only amongst those who shared common convictions regarding the nature of the faith.
The mother of Jesus words penned in Luke 1. Known as the Magnificent, is a great example of God revealing Himself to his humble servant. There is a satisfaction in Mary that is a response to who God is and his redemptive plan for this world. It is a response to the Gospel.
The power of the gospel is when one responds correctly, it will humble and transform the heart that nothing else matters.
This is another inspired book from Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones who has been my spiritual father. The doctor brings you into the transition that occurred to Mary from doubt and uncertainty to walking with baby Jesus in her womb and hearing her cousin Elizabeth proclaimed that she was in fact the mother of Jesus and that she was blessed. Months had passed by and hearing her cousin enthusiastically greet her, Mary in that very moment was captivated in the understanding that she had been given this special assignment from God. Read a chapter a day. Look up the scriptures, Journey with Mary, Enjoy your own journey with the Lord. I believe it is a roadmap of what most of us will go thru with the Lord. I pray that what I have shared will prompt each of you to download a copy. Merry Christmas and the very best everyday in 2018.
This brief sermon series was preached by the Dr in December of 1959 and it focuses solely on Mary’s ‘Magnificant’ as she responded by faith and worshipped God for His covenant faithfulness in sending the promised Saviour of the world - Christ the Lord.
In his sermons, MLJ has very helpfully broken down Luke 1:46-55 into several categories to help us see more deeply these profound and encouraging truths:
1. The magnifying of God in worship, 2. The wisdom of God, 3. The faithfulness of God to fulfill all the he has promised, and 4. The Christians response to God when we truly understand the first three.
An excellent book. I recommend reading it out loud to your family as part of your Christmas devotionals leading up to Christmas morning.
The Book Title here on Goodreads is incorrect : it should read Luke 1:46-55. Excellent sermon series on Mary's Song, explaining both the gospel and a believing response to the gospel. Two of my Aunts would have been present to hear Dr. Lloyd-Jones preach these simple yet powerful gospel messages. Who on earth could ever make the mistake of thinking that he wasn't an evangelistic preacher? Marvellous. Absolutely marvellous.
It took me almost a year to finish this very short book! This is because it’s so very full; full of meaning, insight, scripture and its meaty. I wanted to use a different word but, that’s what it is, meaty. I picked it up, read a small section, the book is divided into small sections within each chapter, then I’d sit with it. Think on it. Maybe you don’t need a year to finish this book but I do recommend reading it slowly. Merry Christmas.
This was dense meat for the soul. What a glorious lens on the works of God—how He truly works, not our finite understandings of his methods and timing. This simple book/sermon on Mary’s burst of song was a grounding way to start my new year!
Mary's Magnificat, her song of praise recorded in Luke 1, is the subject of these sermons (preached in 1959) by Lloyd-Jones. With typical clarity and fervor, the Doctor shows the true cause for Christian praise at Christmas. Much of the contemporary emphasis on notions of peace and goodwill seem fine, yet actually undercut the promise of the Incarnation. Lloyd-Jones also examines the faithfulness of Mary while refusing to elevate her inappropriately. A brief, but worthwhile read.
Excellent series of 5 sermons on Mary's song in Luke 1, also known as the Magnificat. Wonderful gospel meditations to read in the lead up to Christmas.
