There are times when I feel like pinching myself to make sure I’m not dreaming…
I enjoyed working in the corporate world for more than twenty years as a Human Resources executive, but it doesn’t compare to what I’m doing now. For the past several years I’ve been privileged to teach Bible study classes in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) and in my church.
And I write. I write. Those two words have opened an amazing world for me as God has set my feet on a new path – a second career I never dreamed attainable.
It began 15 years ago with a short story published in Chicken Soup for the Soul. That story was the first of more than 30 stories published in anthologies, including 25 Chicken Soup for the Soul books. From there, I published articles in Christian magazines such as Today's Christian Woman, Light & Life, The Lookout, and Focus on the Family’s Clubhouse Magazine.
I’m the author of Daily Reflections on the Names of God: A Devotional (Baker/Revell). And I’m humbled to say Kay Arthur, founder of Precept Ministries, Int’l., has endorsed it.
I’ve also co-authored a children’s picture book series, Faith Basics for Kids (Standard Publishing). The first two books in the series are Do You Love Me More? and Will I See You Today?
If you’re looking for a speaker, I love to speak and teach, engaging audiences with relevant, enjoyable presentations.
The subtitle, "Devotions on the Names of God," is a bit misleading. Not all of the devotions focus on a name. Many are based on attributes or roles of God, such as "gracious" or " helper." This is a quibble. The writing is excellent, and the theology is sound.
The insights are meaningful, and are not dense theological treatises. This makes them very accessible. The downside for mature Christians is that if you WANT a dense theological treatise, you must look elsewhere.
These devotionals are not only informative, they inspire us to examine more closely our relationship with God. The included prayers are simple yet insightful. And each day's entry closes with a probing question designed to deepen one's Christian walk.
Any Christian will benefit from this devotional, but I especially recommend this book for new believers because a right understanding of God and a right relationship to him are essential to the building up of our faith.
This new title helps readers discover all the Biblical names of God, and gives you a wonderful opportunity to know God more intimately. The author is a contributing author to many Cup of Comfort books and Chicken Soup titles so she know how to capture your attention. A short examples of how the book in organized is in order. The table of contents has a chosen lists of the names of God. Each example is one page long and the first one is Glory, which has symbols by it to indicate whether the devotional is focusing on looking ^up^ >in< or . The title is “Are you ready?” followed by the OT Exodus 33:12-23 and NT I Chronicles 16:29. This is followed by 4 short paragraphs, a one sentence prayer and one or two questions to reflect on. There are 3 pages devoted to Glory. Then at the back of the book is an alphabetical listing if you are looking for one attribute in particular, like Encourager. This is followed by a Scripture Index, which I found to be very helpful. I was doing a Revelation study so I found a list of 29 references. This volume is an helpful devotional without personal examples. All devotions are totally Biblical, no cute stories.
Some of the 122 names of God that are examined to reveal some of his character, include “ Creator God” “Lawgiver” “Consuming fire” “ The Lord who Heals” “Vinedresser” “ Worthy” “ Guardian” “ Victorious”
It is an attractive book, but more to be owned by a person then a library. It would make a good gift.
This is a very readable devotional that goes through the names and attributes of God. She starts with the Hebrew names and then goes on to characteristics of God. She then looks at the names of Jesus, His characteristics, and then the Holy Spirit. The entries are not profound theology but are very good for devotional use. This book is out of print now but has been released with a new title. You can find out more about it and my full review at bit.ly/1kD7KlX.
These devotional readings are encouraging reminders of who God is in my life. I liked learning more about the names of God, especially in the first half of the book. The readings are short and easy to relate to. The readings aren't dated or numbered, so I didn't read every day. It took me longer than a year to get through, but it seemed that each time I read, the Lord spoke to me for that moment.
Trying this free devotional I got for my Kindle for my yearly 2012 devotional...
Completed 12-29-12. Each day was not numbered or named, so I thought I was behind, only to read a couple extra days and realized I went ahead and finished before the 31st. Nice devotional, nothing special though, but good to have, especially for free :)
Many of the devotions were thought provoking and I would be drawn back to them for my own need or to share with others. For a busy life when you are looking to connect with the Lord these short devotions helped me succeed, yet you could always take it deeper by delving into the referenced scripture. I've read many devotional books and I didn't want this one to end.
This was a formatting issue. The names of God weren't displayed on the pages as advertised in the introduction, so I wasn't sure which name I was reading about. Entries were very short, so this would be great for a 5-minute devotional time.
Great little daily devotional. Many thought provoking nuggets in this one. Lots of highlights made in my kindle edition. Would like to have it in paper format to go through again and take notes.
Each name or attribute of God has three devotionals about it, covering what the Bible says about it, what it means to the reader individually, and how it applies to reaching out to others.
Ava does a wonderful job with this daily devotional. I have had it for a few years and when I go back and read it, God gives me new lessons through Ava's writing.
