A stirring and beautiful story of a historic and heroic Australian. Great historical notes and letters compiled into an easy read. Thoroughly enjoyed the read and am struck by the humility, honour, and the faith demonstrated by Chaplain Mac.
A very touching book! The fact that the whole Australian Salvation Army, an army that was only volunteers, went and died is very tear jerking! When you watch the movie Gallipoli and then read the book, it doesn’t compare to just how hideous the whole war was. But it makes you realise how horrible it was. The war needed God! And Mackenzie brought him! This is a man who demonstrated a godly person amazingly and courageously!
Read like it was straight out of Bean's official histories, very much caught up in the ANZAC myth. However, McKenzie was a very brave man, and was certainly a very life-changing one as well to the ANZACs on the Dardanelles, even saving a few from the battle of the Wazzir. Overall, not a bad book, I just had a little trouble getting past the whole beanian thing
