Plus an exclusive letter from Jacqueline Wilson about how Tracy was created!
Jacqueline Wilson was born in Bath in 1945, but spent most of her childhood in Kingston-on-Thames. She always wanted to be a writer and wrote her first ‘novel’ when she was nine, filling in countless Woolworths’ exercise books as she grew up. As a teenager she started work for a magazine publishing company and then went on to work as a journalist on Jackie magazine (which she was told was named after her!) before turning to writing novels full-time.
One of Jacqueline’s most successful and enduring creations has been the famous Tracy Beaker, who first appeared in 1991 in The Story of Tracy Beaker. This was also the first of her books to be illustrated by Nick Sharratt. Since then Jacqueline has been on countless awards shortlists and has gone on to win many awards. The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award.
Double Act won the prestigious Smarties Medal and the Children’s Book Award as well as being highly commended for the Carnegie Medal. The Story of Tracy Beaker won the 2002 Blue Peter People’s Choice Award.
Jacqueline is one of the nation’s favourite authors, and her books are loved and cherished by young readers not only in the UK but all over the world. She has sold millions of books and in the UK alone the total now stands at over 35 million!
In 2002 Jacqueline was awarded the OBE for services to literacy in schools and from 2005 to 2007 she was the Children’s Laureate. In 2008 she became Dame Jacqueline Wilson.
This trilogy contains the stories I’m Tracy Beaker, Starring Tracy Beaker and The Dare Game. I read these books when I was a child and when I heard of the release of a new book My Mum Tracy Beaker, I knew I wanted to reread them before I read the new book. This series was also turned into a BBC kids show (you can find it on YouTube). I gave this Trilogy Three Stars. I enjoyed this book for the nostalgia feels but I don’t think it grabbed as much as it did when I was a kid. Although I may be a bit unfair since I know I am not the core demographic for this series. I still can’t wait to read the continuation of Tracy’s story.
A lovely depiction of the spirited response to parental neglect. TB gets into all sorts of scrapes, but learns how to read the true worth of those who have her best interests at heart. The best of the children’s books I’ve read recently, with the possible exception of The Murderer’s Ape, but they are very different kinds of book. Compare and contrast Anne of Green Gables with Tracy Beaker, would be a good challenge for a youngster!
Sometimes Tracy could really irritate me and be a brat. Sometimes she'd be the best person I've ever read about. But one question still remains - WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED TO PETER? No, seriously. Alexander cannot replace Peter. As much as I like Little Gherkin (he's my fav character), poor Pete cannot be thrown away. I want more Tracy. More, Wilson, MOAR!
Really enjoyed this. The character progression we see from Tracey is a amazing. Something about reading the stories I've seen played out on the telly growing up was amazing. It's like a knew the characters before they appeared.
I'm not going to review this, because I don't think I really need to.
All I'm going to say is, when I was growing up, Tracy Beaker meant a lot to me; not because she was in care (I wasn't), but because when I was a child, all the books were about perfect girls with blonde hair and blue eyes, and I wasn't like that - I was a "lively" child. I could always sympathise with Tracy's want of attention, as I could never beat my sister at anything, and also like Tracy, I got into fights (mainly with my sister), and ended up in Time Out a lot (like the Quiet Room).
I also knew from a young age that I wanted to be a writer (just like Tracy), and when I read about a child that wasn't particularly special in any way who was just like me (aside from me not being in care) made me believe I would be able to achieve my dream of being a writer, or my dream of being in Musical Theatre - just like Tracy was able to achieve her dream of being fostered.
So, I want to say a great big THANK YOU to Jacqueline Wilson, as without her, I don't think I ever would have felt like I was good enough because I was difficult, not perfect.
I only read they first one, Story of Tracy Beaker. Tracy beaker is a unsocialable little girl. Her parents arn't around as she lives in a foster home. She doesn't have much friends and she is known as a trouble maker. If she does have a friend it won't last long. One thing Tracy is good at is lies! Although not many people believe her untruthful statements she keeps going with it. Lets just say lying is her life, in better words her life is a lie.
I did like this book, it was very funny and Tracy kind of reminds me of me. Because i lie a lot too. (But I get away with it ;) ) It was quite upsetting as Tracy isn't very pretty but it was really good because it was interesting and i didn't want to stop reading it. I rate it 4/5 because it was a good book and i really enjoyed it.
Jacqueline Wilson does an excellent job at creating the voices of her characters - I could almost believe this was actually written by a ten year old (a very clever 10 year old with excellent grammar!).
Tracy is a fun character who you can't help liking - even when she's being naughty.
I love Tracy Beaker! She can really relate to one of my friends as she is really wild and likes to make trouble and lots of it!! Starring Tracy Beaker, the second book, is my favourite .
