I’ve read one or two reviews saying they didn’t think this book was substantive enough, with not enough text from Alex Ross. I have to disagree.
As a top artist, he has always had his art do his talking for him, and this book just reinforces that.
We get context and a little background on every series of sketches, or roughs, and that’s enough for me. I certainly learned a few things I didn’t know before, and that’s enough for me.
The art, as raw as it mostly is, is superb. Ross is clearly a hugely talented artist regardless of what he uses…pencils, charcoal, inks, paints etc.
A great snapshot of a master craftsman.
