Rate this book
Freedom from Sin through the Promises of God

This study guide companion to the DVD version of  Future Grace —the foundational book by John Piper on the expansive reach of God’s grace—will help individuals and groups understand that victory over sin comes not from a herculean effort to avoid worldly pleasures, but through fixing one’s focus on the reality that God is far more desirable than even life itself. Delighting in the bounty of God's promises frees us from sinful patterns, to the glory of Christ!

This is a book you read slowly & go back to. Equips you with hope and courage. Contributes to build a solid foundation for our faith in the unshakable promises of God.

I only read this book halfway; the first half of the book proved truly insightful and helpful! I love how Piper clearly explains (in intense detail, per his usual style) how faith (in future grace) works itself out in the details of our daily sanctification, always using Scripture to back it up. From what I read, this is a Piper classic for good reason.

However, I stopped simply because I grew tired of the redundancy, and though I gobbled up the book at the beginning, by the middle and was no longer found it intriguing.

Although I'm a huge JP fan, I have a problem with his confidence in certain conclusions he draws while I believe he tends to straw-man others' points of view, specifically the Arminian point of view. As someone who considers themselves an Arminian (with a high view of God's pursuit, initiation, and sovereignty in salvation), I'm not saying he shouldn't present his interpretation, it's just a turn-off when someone presents your view in a way you don't recognize. Truly not that big of a deal, but just was the straw that broke the camel's back (the camel being me ready to move onto another book and being a bit worn of the redundancy).

Probably one of the most underrated books in the Christian English-speaking-world today.

Massive impact on my view of the word "faith" in the Bible. Pinpointed my issue for motivation in the Christian life.

This is an essential book in my opinion. But it might just be me that thinks this way. This is a Piper essential. If you want to know who Piper is and what is one of the "greats", this is it.
