When you open the door, the light shines in! Retired Navy SEAL Commander "Kip" Hendricks has one mission in life - stop terrorism. Kip and his team, arrive on Hartz Island located in the San Juan Islands in Washington State, to monitor cargo ships arriving from Indonesia, suspected of smuggling young jihad terrorists. All the ships must pass Hartz Island as they head to their Pacific Northwest ports. Holed up at Eagle's Nest Lodge, the joint task force of Americans and Canadians strategize their mission. Out on the waters, tracking the ships, Kip and his team discover unusual activity surrounding the islands and specifically Hartz Island. What appears to be an innocent out-of-the-way island isn't! After the murder of her Seattle police officer husband, Jeannie Rogers followed her dream and opened The Ferry Dock café on Hartz Island. Now she is at a crossroads in her life. Her CPA brother wants her to sell her failing café before she is left with nothing. Trying to make ends meet, Jeannie gladly accepts the week-long catering job at Eagle's Nest Lodge. Unbeknownst to her, this week would be a pivotal point in her life, but also Kip Hendricks. The San Juan Islands melt into the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, attracting eclectic residents, like Montana Worthington; free spirit thinkers, but also those who like to live outside the law.
4.5 stars. This book should have a half naked, sweaty military guy on the front cover. :-) What a great romance suspense story, you can tell the author really did her research. It was a great mix of military muscle tactics to thwart terrorism combined with a small town life set in the upper Washington state area. The romance was well done too, I just wished the heat was turned up a notch. Great secondary characters, especially Jeannie's friend Montana, (who I assume will get a book soon too?)
This is a new author for me and I really enjoyed this romantic suspense. It was a great combination of small town romance (Pacific Northwest) and military thriller. Another big plus for me was that both the Hero and heroine were in their mid to late 40's! I rarely see that in a romance and it was a nice surprise. The Hero was a take-charge ex military man (my favorite) and the heroine was smart, generous and struggling to make a new life for herself. The writing was strong and the secondary characters were fleshed out nicely.
I only wish the romance/steam was turned up a few notches. The heat in this book is definitely mild. (For my Austin club friends, Robin Carr is erotica compared to this read - LOL).
I look forward to reading more from this author. :)
Slip into the Night is a fresh real story that it worthy of being made into a movie. Unlike so many of the romances that are out this book contains significant substance. Instead of two characters that could never exist outside of a fairytale world, the characters are believable and their struggles give the reader a glimpse of a captivating real life love story. This is so much more then just a romance, containing action, adventure, suspense, and mystery - this will satisfy the most discriminating reader.
This story is set in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, primarily on Hartz Island. The charming seaside community was at one time a bustling city but since the Ferry has been moved to another docking area the town is now quiet and more of a retreat for people looking to get away from it all. However it’s prime location in relation to major shipping lanes and limited exposure is making it a hot spot for terrorists to gain entrance to the states undetected. Enter Kip, the owner of a private company hired to fight terrorism on all fronts and coordinate all the various military and law offices to follow the leads and piece together where the national security threats are. He is the ultimate FBI/CIA special op’s type character and his strong authoritative character reawakens feelings that have long since been suppressed and buried in Jeannie Rogers. Jeannie is the widow of a local law enforcement officer and the owner of the town’s Café’. She is hired by a friend to cater the meals for the local lodge that Kip is using for his team’s home base while in the area. From the moment they meet the sparks begin to fly. But given Jeannie’s fear of getting involved with another person in law enforcement and Kip’s limited time in town their relationship is tentative regardless of the deep unexplained connection they both have.
Given Kip’s limited time in town and limited resources he involves Jeannie in some of the investigation into what is going on and when he eventually leaves town the investigation of course continues with them each noticing things from their own perspectives. This gives the reader a unique opportunity to piece together the full depth of what the characters are up against given all the shady things going on around them. The terrorist activities are involved and lend an exciting amount of suspense and mystery to the story as they each try to piece together what they know.
Kip is also fighting is own demons and having already suffered through one wife leaving him because he was always gone due to work he is reluctant to pursue a relationship. With his job once again pulling him away he is left feeling at a loss over the depth of what he feels for Jeannie. But fate takes a hand and in the end he has to look hard at what is really important.
These characters are rich and very believable. From the first page the reader is drawn in and is anxious to learn what happens next. The cast is broad and each character more charming then the next. With Jeannie’s café lending a charming backdrop to get to know the town’s characters intimately, as they each come in to drink her coffee from their own personal cup, the reader is drawn into the heart of the town and is shown just how much they care for each other. There is great potential for this book to lead to a very exciting series developing each character into their own book. The investigation unearths many clues but it will take several books before the full extent of what is going on will be resolved which should lead to many more exciting adventures to come. This one is one of the “keep” bookshelf.
RATING: 5 chocolate dipped strawberries served with Jeannie’s coffee in my favorite cup!
Many thanks to Tracie Ingersoll Loy for guest blogging with us this weekend and allowing us to review this fabulous book. We look forward to reading more from her in the future!
“Slip into the Night” was an entertaining read right from page 1 - with great humor, an engaging romance and a lovely setting. The author did a terrific job of bringing the story, setting and people to life for me. I must admit I did find the male characters, especially Kip Hendricks, to be somewhat cliché but hey, for decades I’ve been reading books in which all of the female characters were one-dimensional and stereotypical - so I guess it’s only fair that the men take a turn, right? In contrast, I absolutely loved all of the female characters, especially Jeannie Rogers and her quirky new friend, Montana - they were fresh and interesting and I’m motivated to read more about them in the future. I’d definitely buy the sequel and will be watching for more books from this gifted story-teller.
Very enjoyable read. It took me a little while to get into it but once I did I'm glad I kept reading. Jeannie and Kip were a great couple who refreshingly were not in their twenties but in their forties. The terrorism plot was not solved in this book so I assume Slip Into the Night is the first book in a series, which I will definitely continue reading.
Just could not get into this book. The first few chapters made me feel like I was reading a sequel - names and relationships are thrown at you willynilly and in one case seemed to contradict each other. DNF
Excellent from cover to cover! Fantastic plot and believable, lovable characters. So much fun to read; lots of PNW geography and scenery and a current times story and drama. Kit and Jeannie are great together and I was pulled in from the very first couple of pages!
I took this book along on my iPad on a recent Alaskan cruise hoping for an enjoyable vacation read and I wasn't disappointed, but then I love romantic mysteries and books that take place on/near the water in the Pacific Northwest.
Slip Into the Night is well written, good dialogue, and has well developed characters.
Storyline fell apart for me in places because something would be introduced and then not tied up by the end of the book. It looks like the security agency was tailing terrorists and the readers were introduced to 3 or 4 terrorists in hiding, never to be heard from again. Lot of activity on the water probably involving smuggling goods between British Columbia and Washington. The best law enforcement could come up with was confiscating counterfeit viagra.
Whether or not the scenarios depicted in the book would really happen in real life was not an issue for me. Its fiction. That's why we read it. And wonder what if this really could happen, such as law enforcement recruiting civilians for surveillance duties.
As to whatever happened to those terrorists and other story lines that didn't get resolved in this book....
Apparently this is the beginning of a series. Maybe we'll eventually find out what happens.
A good read. I'm looking forward to more books from this author.
I enjoyed the banter and romance these characters share. Jeannie is a realistic and vulnerable character. She has been through a lot of tragedy in her life but insists on the idea of starting over. She was reluctant at first of a relationship with Kip, but doesn't want to give up on the opportunity of love. She's just a normal woman, not flawlessly perfect or an extreme feminist. I love her relatable qualities and her drive at success.
In the end I found myself glad to have read Slip Into the Night. It was adventurous and at times even sweet. I would say to anyone who is reluctant to read Slip Into the Night to take a chance, you may be pleasantly suprised. Slip Into the Night is an intriguing story while overall maintaining a good love story throughout.
I enjoyed this book because it was more mystery than romance, but the mystery wasn’t very suspense. The aspect of the story I enjoyed the most was the description of the Washington area. The author does a great job illustrating the surroundings and definitely allows the reader to fall in love with Kip. I would have enjoyed similar depth in the mystery of the book as I felt it fell flat. The pieces just did not fit together for me, however if the reader is more into the romance novels they may find the story a great read. Be forewarned, if dieting or hungry you may not want to read at the time. I have been craving a big, warm cinnamon bun since the beginning of the book. It is a good first novel for the author.
A very enjoyable read! Part woman's fiction, part mystery, part romance--there is something here for everyone, as well as a chance to spend some time getting to know the Pacific Northwest. And if all the mystery isn't completely tied up at the end, that's okay, because Tracie promises to give us book two in the next year!
A romance book but much more substantial---a mystery to solve too! As a grandmother it was great to read a romance about a woman a little older than the usual 25 year old. I think this would make a good movie.
