Sixteen original short stories, all from the point of view of our favorite male characters. Using prequel short stories and retellings from alternate points of view, these stories peek inside the male characters from the contributors’ novels, giving new insights and sigh worthy moments.
These young adult stories cover a range of paranormal, science fiction, contemporary, mystery, thriller … but they are all romantic at heart.
Let these imminently crushable, swoon-worthy guys show you what romance looks like – in his eyes.
The contributors to IN HIS EYES include award young adult winners, frequent “Top 100” placers, and hot 2011 debut authors.
Contributors C.K. Bryant, Lisa Nowak, Magan Vernon, Elle Strauss, Laura Pauling, Cheri Lasota, S.R. Johannes, Stacy Wallace Benefiel, Ali Cross, Jessie Harrell, Katie Klein, Karen Amanda Hooper, RaShelle Workman, Heather McCorkle, Susan Kaye Quinn, and Cory Putman Oakes
Shelli R. Johannes is the author of 18 books (out and forthcoming). She is the coauthor (with Kimberly Derting) of the popular CECE LOVES SCIENCE series and PENNY (An Engineering Tale of the Fourth Pig). In addition to her tween and teen novels, she is also the author of the THEO THESAURUS series and SHINE LIKE A UNICORN. Her new chapter book in Chelsea Clinton’s “She Persisted” series on FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE comes out in March 2023.
Shelli can often be found on highways and country roads saving strays and other jaywalking critters or volunteering with animal conservation groups. After earning a master’s to follow her passion of writing.
She lives in Atlanta with her own pack of unicorns: a British husband, two teens, two Goldendoodles, one sassy bird, and the many loud characters that “live” in her head. Shelli is addicted to exclamation points, puns, unicorns, and anything sciencey. You can always count on her to laugh at her own jokes, at least once.
Since Anthologies are short stories, I really can’t do an in-depth review on each one without ruining the whole plot. So, in honor of “short” stories, I am going to summarize my initial reaction to each story from In His Eyes in 5 words!
Surprise Surprise by Stacey Wallace Benefiel: What a great Valentines date!
First Kiss or First Kill by C.K. Bryant: Medicine Mix-up had me laughing.
Shattered by Ali Cross: She better love him back.
Before by Jessie Harrell: Who would turn down Eros?
The Qualm Before the Storm by Karen Amanda Hooper: Just kidnap her and leave.
Unspeakable by S.R. Johannes: Full of mystery, major cliffhanger!
In the Beginning by Katie Klein: I want my own guardian!
A Chance Encounter by Cheri Lasota: Where is this girl going?
Family Bonds by Heather McCorkle: Definitely worth breaking the rules.
Getting Closer by Lisa Nowak: A sensitive guy, how refreshing.
Precalculus by Cory Putman Oakes: Math SHOULD be that exciting!
The Almost Assassin by Laura Pauling: Who would taze a mime?
Mind Games by Susan Kaye Quinn: Don’t they believe in privacy?
By The Firelight by Elle Strauss: Do NOT mess with Casey.
A Very Alien Valentine’s Day by Magan Vernon: Aliens have some serious class.
Aligned by RaShelle Workman: Makes saving souls look easy.
So there they are, my initial reactions. I hope this sparks some curiosity as to exactly what these stories are about. What? Need more convincing? Fine. Since you asked so nicely, I will share my thoughts on this anthology as a whole. Ahem…
I have never been one to read anthologies; I think this is because I form an emotional attachment to the characters, and then BOOM they’re gone. That said, this book is wonderful. As in, curl up on the couch, grab a cup of tea, and daydream about these guys after reading all their stories. All of the short stories are from the guys’ POV. It’s a very refreshing change from the normal, female protagonist approach. With all of these amazing guys, the biggest challenge is simply choosing your favorite crush! One thing that I really love about In His Eyes is that I still understand and connect with the short stories, deleted scenes, and prequels that are associated with books that I haven’t read yet. Each of the authors does an amazing job of tying me to the characters and, when needed, providing background information to help set up the stories. All of these short stories are very well written and have a definite flow making them easy to read.
Another quality that makes this book so amazing is its diversity. All of these stories are YA fiction, but some of them are contemporary, some are paranormal, some are fantasy, a few are sci-fi, and I even classify one as historical. With all of these different genres, there is sure to be a perfect story for just about anyone’s taste.
The cover:
Well lets see: this cover is steamy. Just look at the heart, it screams romance. I really love how the guy and girl are looking at one another through the heart in the mirror as they are leaning in for a kiss. They don't even seem to be aware of a mirror between them. So romantic. I hope they both get that kiss!
Basically, I absolutely LOVE In His Eyes and recommend it to anyone who loves YA, yummy guys, mystery, and a whole lot of romance!
I have really struggled with how to review this book because it so such a large collection of different stories. If you love YA, this book definitely has something for you here. I loved meeting all the characters! And I'm sure that it accomplished its purpose, lol, because now I want to read EVERY book that this anthology is based upon....... Thanks Ladies!!! There are really sweet stories all throughout this book. There is no way that I can go into details about every single one so, I am just going to highlight the ones that I were my favorites if that's ok. But like I said before, I truly want to read every single book that these shorts are based upon!
So now for my favorites, I especially loved the first story, called "Surprise, Surprise", about Raleigh and Melody from the Zillie Wells Trilogy! Wow! Its just what every girl dreams of! I don't want to tell what happens because I don't want to ruin it. But if you think about about the most romantic thing you can think of that a guy could possibly do.... well, if you are anything like me, this would be it! Its so incredibly sweet! *tear* I loved it!
The next one that I want to touch in is called "The Qualm Before the Storm'. I love this story because, the main character Treygan (LOVE his name by the way) is supposed to carry out some orders. These orders will be carried out against the will of the girl and he wants to fight for her right to choose the right path for herself. He fights against everything that he knows will happen if he doesn't do what he is supposed to, but he can't help thinking about how it is going to effect her. How drastically her life is going to be changed. I think he is a very admirable man for putting her before himself, even in spite of the consequences that effect him later. Hehe who wouldn't want to go into the water with Treygan anyway!
Another one that I loved was "In the Beginning". Who doesn't love the thought of having a guardian, even if you didn't know they are there. Well what if that guardian was in love with you? What if all he can do is sit back and watch you and love you from afar. He can never touch you face, or hold you tight. But yet, he loves you still. He will do everything he can to protect you. That is what Seth is faced with in this story. He is in love with Genesis even though it is forbidden and he can only love her from afar without making himself known to her. I feel so bad for him, and find myself praying over and over that somehow, he will get to be with her in the end. Though at the end of this story it isn't looking so good... What will happen? I DON'T KNOW!! I gotta read the book too! And believe me its on my to do list!
These are just a few of the great stories in this book! My only problem, was just that they left me wanting more. Which is what they were designed to do. But now, lol, I am in misery! Soooo, now I have a lot more books on my to read list!
Some of these I liked, some I didn't like. My main thought on finishing though, was that I was glad it was over.
#1 Surprise, Surprise - 3 stars - Okay, but I remember nothing about these characters from the original books so wasn't 100% sure what was going on. The thing with the candles was really cheesy.
#2 First Kiss - 4 stars - I liked this one. A girl called Kira is given a potion, but one of the ingredients was wrong, so she starts hallucinating, and kisses a boy called Octavion, who is half-cat. I also thnk there was some kind of prophecy or something about Octavion killing Kira? Not sure (I read this last night 🤣) but I liked this enough to read the full length books in the series.
#3 Shattered - 3 stars - James is instructed to fuel Miri's alcoholism, but instead falls in love with her, and ends up hanging upside down with cuts all over himself, for not doing as he was told.
#4 Before - 3 stars - The God of Love if exhiled for shooting Zeus with arrows, but instead of suffering he fells in love with a girl called Lelah. This was okay, I don't really know anything about Greek myths though, so some of it was lost on me.
#5 - The Qualm Before The Storm - 3 stars - this was really short. It was about a mer-man called Treygan who had to turn a girl into a mermaid to save his race, but felt rather guilty about doing it against her will.
#6 - Unspeakable - 3.5 stars - This was about a boy who is out in some woods. He frees a deer caught in an illegal trap, then sees a girl. He follows her, but she ends up in trouble. Cliffhanger.
#7 - In The Beginning - 3.5 stars - A guardian seems to be falling in love with the girl he is supposed to be guarding 🤣 She almost dies, so he takes a chance to kiss her fingertips.
#8 - A Chance Encounter - 2 stars - A man is on a train and stops another man from hitting on a girl who is crying. This wasn't a short story though! It was an excerpt! And I HATE excerpts 😠
#9 - Family Bonds - A boy finds out that his cousin has gone to a party, and follows her, wearing a mask so no-one will know who he is. He finds his cousin at the party, but a fight breaks out and she seems to be at the centre of it.
#10 - Getting Closer - 3 stars - Boy goes on a date with an older girl, tells her the details of how his mother left him, and then sent him to live with her brother. Girl kisses boy, boy is happy.
#11 - Precalculus - 3 stars - Boy is protecting a girl names Emily, but really he likes a girl called Sonya. Then something happens to make him think that he should be protecting Sonya and not Emily.
#12 - The Almost Assassin - 3 stars - Malcolm is supposed to be killing a girl called Savvy, but his feelings for her get in the way, and he tries to figure out a way to save her.
#13 - Mind Games - 3 stars - Raf likes a girl called Kira, but everyone tells him it's wrong because she doesn't have the ability to speak mind-to-mind, so she is therefore a child. No idea what the word 'praver' is supposed to mean 🙄
#14 - By The Firelight - Boy is annoyed with his girlfriend and dances with another girl to annoy her at their high school dance. Unfortunately they end up being transported back to the year 1860, and that is never really explained.
#15 - A Very Alien Valentine's Day - 2 stars - I really didn't like this one. Why buy a teenage girl a $10,000 necklace? When is she ever going to be able to wear that? And changing one of the diamonds for a alien rock? I really don't see how that's a good idea. I definitely won't be reading the full length book of this.
#16 - Aligned - 2 stars - I am beyond confused. One minute he's human, then he's 3 different things, then he's on some mission with a girl that I didn't understand 🤦 Not impressed.
Reading this anthology was fun! It was like speed dating - spending a few minutes with each story and deciding if you like the storyline, characters, the author's writing style and so forth, then deciding if you'd like to pursue it further. Wait. I've never done the speed dating thing, maybe there's some unpleasantness associated with that. Since it was completely enjoyable, let me find a better analogy. Okay, I've got one! It was like going to Baskin Robbins and trying 16 of their 31 flavors. Yeah, you might like some better than others, but THEY"RE ALL ICE CREAM.....WINNING! Plus, you can have them all in one sitting if you want (why does everything lead to food, with me?).
If you've been hanging with me for the few weeks I've been up and running, you know that I have a special affection for the ladies that make up the The Indelibles. Several have been kind enough to forward me their books for review and I've won a couple more in giveaways. So far, I've reviewed 3 books that are linked to 3 of the short stories listed above, on my blog - BOUND by C.K. Bryant, RUNNING WIDE OPEN by Lisa Nowak and BECOME by Ali Cross. Reading those 3 stories in this anthology was like visiting a friend. You already know the basics, and yet there's still something new and interesting to learn about them. Also, a male perspective for the whole read, that's a bonus. Throw a romantic theme on top of that and you've got the recipe for an extra special Valentines Day treat! Who says no to that?
Like I mentioned earlier, some flavors stood out. The short stories (other than those associated with books I've already reviewed) that pulled me in and whispered, "Gotcha! You're mine. Read my book or you'll never sleep again" were: IN THE BEGINNING (The Guardian) by Katie Klein, PRECALCULUS (The Veil) by Cory Putman Oakes and MIND GAMES (Open Minds) by Susan Kaye Quinn. They get my AWESOME FIRST IMPRESSION Award. But, trust me, ALL the stories are good and piqued my interest. I'm sure I'll eventually get around to reading every book on the list. So, now it's your turn to check it out and see which ones end up making YOUR list of best first impressions.
I recommend this to everyone who enjoys reading YA, don't pass it up!
Looking for a fun new read for you or a young adult in your life? I wanted to tell you about a new anthology called IN HIS EYES that is just perfect. You can buy it TODAY for Valentine's day!! It's the perfect read to snuggle up to with a box of chocolates, a blanket, and tea. Read on in the blog for information about the collection and authors involved, as well as an exclusive interview about how the anthology came about from one of the authors you won't want to miss!
A wonderful group of writers (they call themselves *The Indelibles* and write young adult fiction--check them out on FB) have put together a fun book of short stories based on either male characters in their already published books or new ones they've dreamed up just for your enjoyment. They told me they just want to give back to all the fabulous readers out there!!
I've read THE VEIL by Cory Putman Oakes and loved it and just recently also posted about author S.R. Johannes, who wrote Untraceable and On the Bright Side. Both of their short stories are fabulous as well as many of the others. If you've read their books, you'll love some of the new perspective from favorite male characters. If you haven't read their books, as with many of these for me, you'll definitely want to go grab their books soon too because they'll leave you wanting more, either from the characters you've met or from liking their writing style. This is a great collection for any lover of YA fiction.
The anthology is a FREE e-book from Smashwords.com!!! No strings attached (Note: .99 cents on Amazon and Barnes and Noble).
I love a good anthology. It's a nice break from novel-length stories and often it gives us a glimpse into stories we may not have read in the past. That was exactly what this book was. It was a wonderful book full of cute love stories and perfect for a Valentine's day read.
One of the things i really loved about this anthology is that we get a little explanation of who we will meet before each story. These are often connected to other stories already available by the author. Links are listed as well so it's easy to click on it and go directly to the book page. I found myself doing that often. I would read one of the stories and go back to add the author's book to my list. I was worried I might be confused jumping into different stories that take place in contrasting worlds but that wasn't the case at all. Each story was so amazingly written.
Since these are short stories I won't go into too much detail but I will say that they bring so much emotion in a small package. For example, during the 2nd story First Kiss or First Kill I was cracking up through most of it.
Most people love a good male POV as well so if you are a fan of those, you gotta check this out. It was so adorable to see how these guys felt about love and romance.
In His Eyes was such a cute, enjoyable read. I was happy to get the chance to sample the writings of each author and have added many more titles to my to-read shelf now!
Recommended: Anthology fans. People looking for male POVs, short stories, and new books to read and would like to check out some new authors.
This is a tough review to write. I wish I could tell you about each and every story in this book because they’re great…each one introduces the reader to a new setting, a new group of people and a new adventure.
But I can’t…so I’ll tell you about the overall feelings I got from this book:
I was surprised by how different each story was. Yes, there’s a theme of love that runs through them but the approach to the theme is unique within each tale.
I was captivated by the characters…spies, mermen, gods, guardian angels and many more…all sharing their stories and their worlds from their own points of view. I can admit that many of these characters are swoon-worthy even in these tiny glimpses.
I was charmed by the range of feelings that these stories explored. The characters were nervous, confused, self-assured, heroic, focused, determined and, of course, in love. And, even in a few short pages, each author managed to convey these feelings so clearly that I was pulled into the action quickly.
I was frustrated (in a good way) because some of these stories were not nearly long enough…I needed more!
I was happy that I could pick up my kindle, even if I only had a few minutes, and immerse myself in a quick journey to stimulate my imagination (and get away from the real world).
I was busy….buying new books by authors I just discovered!
Overall, this is a quick read that will introduce you to some wonderful authors and fantastic characters! I look forward to another anthology in the future.

I found this story to be a rare treat. Raf is perfectly drool worthy, but shows kindness and loyalty to his friend, the girl of his dreams. Yep, a complete package this Raf is a keeper:) This is a tantalizing tidbit that makes the reader want more!
GETTING CLOSER by Lisa Nowak
I found this story was a great example to YA, that there is more to it all than whose hot and whose not:) That friendship, caring compassion are great attributes to celebrate everyday!
Precalculus by Cory Putman Oakes
This is another great story that empahizes a young man who puts responsibility above what he “wants” he does what’s right with all his ability, even though his heart says differently.
Family Bonds by Heather McCorkle This story hits the spot for those that love fire and spark battles, with just the right amount of intrigue and mystery!
Shattered by Ali Cross
Ms. Cross lures you into Shattered, mesmerizes you with the world she creates and then leaves the reader no other choice…to read her full length novel, BECOME, featuring Desi, James and Miri!
IN HIS EYES (ANTHOLOGY) BY THE INDELIBLES AUTHORS
These stories are just examples of all the wonderful adventures that lie inside the cover of IN HIS EYES
In His Eyes is a quick, easy and lovely read from the first short story to the last. The stories really warms your heart. It’s full of sweet moments of first loves and kisses and even moments of discovering love for the first time.
I enjoyed every single story within the book. Each story was in the point of view of the male perspective which really surprised me. I always struggle to connect with male perspectives, but not this time around. Each male character had a unique voice some may have even captured my heart. These boys are surely swoon-worthy. It was a great idea for the authors to place the male character as the main point of view because it’s always nice to know what’s going on in their heads.
I also liked that none of the stories blended together. Not one story was the same and each story was completely different from each other. A few had paranormal aspects, some sci-fi and there was also a dystopian setting too. I enjoyed diving into a new adventure with every story. I was surprised to encounter aliens, gods, mermaids, spies and mind readers. Each story easily lures you in and because each story is quite short, you’re left wanting more of the characters and the story overall.
Some stories were a part of a series, an excerpt or prequels, so at times I was a little confused with the plot but this didn’t take out the overall enjoyment. Some of the stories really stuck with me so much that I decided that I couldn’t resist looking for more of the characters. I especially enjoyed Mind Games by Susan Kaye Quinn, In the Beginning by Katie Klein, Unspeakable by S.R. Johannes, By The Firelight by Elle Strauss and Before by Jessie Harrell.
Overall, In His Eyes is fantastic collection of love stories that will surely make you smile.
Do you want a book that make you soon with every new chapter? Then this book if for you! When I got this book I knew I was in love and I haven't even started it yet!
This book is filled with great love stories from the guys point of view. You see there emotions, their thoughts, everything that you want in a characters. The love interest go from crushes to full on LOVE!
I also love reading this anthology cause it introduced me to so many other authors that I need to read! I can't believe of how much I have been missing! Hear me now when I say that I have added loads of new books to my ever-growing tbr pile!
In His Eyes is full of silky smooth romance that you want to dive in. Each new boy delivers a new bursts of love in whole new meanings. In His Eyes has lots of love that can last a life time!
Surprise, Surprise by Stacey Wallace Benefiel, author of Glimpse: Half the women in Melody's family can see the future, which makes it nearly impossible for Raleigh to surprise her. What's a guy to do for Valentine's Day when his girlfriend is always one step ahead of him? Review-Been wanting to read this series for ages.Review: I found the writing engaging and will defintiely have to get on the story. It was a sweet Valentine's day first date and Raleigh wanted it perfect. He came pretty close!
First Kiss or First Kill? by C.K. Bryant, author of Bound: Love isn't always rainbows and kittens, sometimes it can be downright deadly. (A deleted chapter from Bound.) Review: A bit darker, than the first story. I think I'd need to read the series to understand who these creatures were but my interest was definitely piqued.
Shattered by Ali Cross, author of Become: James and Desi use each other in an effort to cling to the darkness in each of them, but in the end they discover that love changes you. (A chapter of Become from James’ POV.) Review:This was really interesting. Seems like these two work for the devil even though the boy James has fallen in love with a girl he's supposed to make delinquent. He just can't. His punishment is unique. It's interesting how things work out.
Before by Jessie Harrell, author of Destined: When a younger Eros is exiled to a land that doesn't believe in the Greek gods, he finds the first love of his immortal life. Read Eros' first person account of his romance, and heartbreak, in the time before he met Psyche. Review: I've been loking for this story and was so glad to find it. I really enjoyed this quick peek ito the life of a god who'd been mortalized for a bit.
The Qualm Before the Storm by Karen Amanda Hooper, author ofTangled Tides. Yara Jones doesn’t want to be a mermaid. Treygan doesn’t want to be the monster who turns her. You can’t always get what you want. (A short prequel to Tangled Tides.) Review: Loved this quickie. Been trying to decide if I wanted to read this one. Yep, sure do!
Unspeakable by S.R. Johannes, author of Untraceable: When Mo sees a strange girl in the woods, he follows her. He soon realizes they are both in a dangerous position and might not get out alive. Review: Loved to hear Mo's first encounter with the "strange girl". But she's in peril when the snippet ends.
In the Beginning by Katie Klein, author of Cross My Heart: Seth is falling hard for Genesis Green, but the guardian angel is determined not to interfere, until an accident changes the course of their lives forever. (A short prequel to The Guardian.) Review: This was different. In such a small dose the lore was a bit hard to follow, but unique.
A Chance Encounter by Cheri Lasota, author of Artemis Rising: Finnian's eyes hide a terrible secret. But a girl on the train home, the girl in tears with a secret of her own...She sees right through him. A scene from the upcoming novel, Echoes in the Glass.
Family Bonds by Heather McCorkle, author of The Secret of Spruce Knoll: A Halloween party filled with teens who can channel energy and use it to kill, what could go wrong? For Spruce Knoll fans who are dying to read more about Fane.Revies: Teens fighting by channeling powers? Different. Unique. I liked it!
Getting Closer by Lisa Nowak, author of Running Wide Open: Megan is smart, hot, and an upperclassman—in other words, way out of Cody’s league. So why did she choose him? (An excerpt of Getting Sideways.) Review: Cody goes on a date where Meagan drives and he reveals more of himself than he intends to, but she likes that. Love that the guy reveals himself. Cody doesn't seem the type so it's equally interesting.
Precalculus by Cory Putman Oakes, author of The Veil: a re-telling of the fateful class period that changed Addison Russell’s life, from Luc’s point of view (a.k.a. Chapter 2 of The Veil from Luc’s perspective) Review: Luc finds that the girl he's dating is the wrong girl. It's oddly dark and foreboding.
The Almost Assassin by Laura Pauling, author of A Spy Like Me, releasing Spring 2012: Malcolm tries his hand at the family business but his conscience and a beautiful "spy" may be his downfall.
Mind Games by Susan Kaye Quinn, author of Open Minds: Raf wants to take Kira—the only girl in school who doesn’t read minds—to the mindware Games, but his friends have other plans. (A short prequel to Open Minds.) Review: A look at Kira through Raf's eyes. And how peer pressure really sucks!
By The Firelight by Elle Strauss, author of Clockwise: When Nate McKenzie asks an unpopular girl to dance on a dare, he's in for the time of his life. Time travel through Nate's eyes. Review: Loved this! I loved Clockwise and seeing Nate in such disbelief and what he thinks is happening is beyond funny.
A Very Alien Valentine’s Day by Magan Vernon, author of How To Date An Alien: After surviving confinement and an intergalactic war for his human half, Alex, now he has to live through the biggest challenge of them all: Valentine's Day. Review: Very funny. An alien dating a human. When diamonds are a dime a dozen on his planet, Alex has to find something very special for his girl. I'm definitely interested in this novel.
Aligned by RaShelle Workman, author of Exiled: A half-Eternal boy and an Eternal girl must free millions of tortured souls from a creature whose been feasting on their pain and suffering.( Review: Have been wanting to read this one for awhile, too. Loved the teaser.
***I just wanted to note that I wrote this very brief review in the wee small hours of the morning. I read the anthology early in the day, but my review was late and I needed to publish it on Saturday. So, I didn't get to every story and my reviews are way too brief. But this was a great sampling of these authors and a way to decide if you want to start their series or not. YES is my resounding answer.**** Heather
MIND GAMES YA (Mindjack Trilogy Prequel) by Susan Kaye Quinn
MIND GAMES (found in the anthology In His Eyes) is the prequel short story to indie author Susan Kaye Quinn’s new Mindjack Trilogy .
Background: Sixteen-year-old Kira Moore is a zero, someone who can't read thoughts or be read by others. Zeros are outcasts who can't be trusted, leaving her no chance with Raf, a regular mindreader and the best friend she secretly loves.
In a world of mindreaders, Kira is an anomaly. She has yet to enter the change and is unable to read the minds of her fellow students. But at the same time, her mind is a blank to anyone who dares to enter. To be forever branded as a zero is not the title Kira wants. As the end of the school year approaches, Kira is hoping that summer vacation will usher in some new changes in her life.
Raf Santos is one of the most popular guys in school. With the upcoming year end Gamesdance, Raf has only one girl in mind for his date, but the others have different plans that do not include Kira. When Raf’s so called friends threaten to harm Kira, Raf will make a decision that could hurt Kira and destroy their fragile relationship that appears to be unraveling day by day. Once best friends with Kira, Raf will have to face the consequences of his actions, when Kira may no longer be a part of his life.
Mind Games in the introductory short story in Quinn’s Mindjack Trilogy. An interesting concept that includes the ability to read minds, hear thoughts and the isolation of those who have yet to attain status in a world governed by the reality of truths. Without the ability to be read, the zeroes cannot be trusted-for fear they hold secrets. A concept based in prejudices and stereotypes, I look forward to reading Open Minds-Book 1 in the Mindjack Trilogy.

A VERY ALIEN VALENTINE’S DAY by Magan Vernon
A VERY ALIEN VALENTINE’S DAY by Magan Vernon is a short story found in the anthology In His Eyes. As part of Magan’s Alien Romance series, A Very Alien Valentine’s Day is a sweet look at the confusion surrounding Ace’s first Valentine’s Day.
As a Caltian, Ace found the practice of Valentine’s Day unnecessary and a bit overwhelming. To add to his dilemma, his best friend Monte claims that human girls expect a little something from their boyfriends on V-day, even if the boyfriend was from another planet. But Ace had no idea what was expected and his girlfriend Alex seemed resistant to the idea of celebrating Valentine’s Day.
Like most females, Alex was hoping that Ace would remember the day for lovers, but she too, was not going to raise her expectations in case Ace wasn’t willing to partake in the very human tradition of celebrating another useless holiday. But a cold February evening would prove that Alex’s fears were fodder for the wind. To be loved as deeply and completely is the dream of every woman on this planet or the next.
A Very Alien Valentine’s is a quick read, basically a chapter in length and a welcome addition to Magan’s Alien Romance series. Change the alien scenario, and you will find yourself smiling at the very real dilemma of celebrating your first Valentine’s Day with a lover or friend.

UNSPEAKABLE (YA) by S.R. Johannes
UNSPEAKABLE is the Young Adult short-story (found In His Eyes anthology) written by S.R. Johannes. The introduction to the Nature of Grace series, Unspeakable follows two lost souls as they wander the forests hoping to find something or someone, told from a different POV. The Nature of Grace series is told from the heroine’s POV but Unspeakable looks at life from another’s POV>
Written in first person POV, the reader follows through the eyes of the narrator while he walks the terrain of the forest and land. When he chances upon a wounded fawn caught in a trap, he soon realizes he may not be alone. Where there is a trap, the hunter is not too far behind.
But it is the sight of a beautiful young woman, wandering and taking note of the land, that captures his attention. When he returns the next day, hoping to find her again, he realizes the danger that she has quickly put herself in. Trapped by the hunters, the young woman soon becomes both prisoner and prey, and there must be something that he can do, to prevent the inevitable from happening.
Unspeakable is a quick read, basically a chapter in length that introduces some basic information about the Nature of Grace series. At this point, we are not privy to names or destinations, but as a prologue Unspeakable will leave you wanting for read what happens next.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A fun, creative collection of YA shorts all told from male POVs—a rare treat in the genre. The anthology format offers a mix of fantasy, contemporary, and paranormal, so there’s something for everyone. Some stories shine more than others, but the concept is strong and provides refreshing insight into beloved or new characters. Ideal for fans of the contributing authors or readers curious about exploring new voices.
I'm not really sure how to go about this review since this anthology is chock full of so many stories by so many authors, so I guess I'm just going to go for an overall view. I liked this in the sense that I got to try out a lot of different authors--some of whose books I have been thinking of trying out--without committing to an entire book. Which worked out splendidly, since I found out I don't like some that I had been thinking of getting, while others I either discovered or confirmed my interest.
It was interesting to see so many unique styles in one "book", so to speak. Each author has their own flavor and flow, which is cool. I got to see a little of each, and in the process found some authors I think I'll like a lot. Overall it was a pretty good read.
I bought this book, and therefore was not required nor asked to write a review, nor a positive one at that. I was not compensated for this review.
The In His Eyes Anthology is a nice compilation of a variety of short stories, and excerpts from the author's various novels, but told through his eyes.
I like being punny
While I enjoyed most of these, I think I really would've like it more had it featured a more balanced ratio between the small quantity of short stories and the large amount of excerpts. Not knowing who these characters were or having any background made me feel isolated for quite a few of the stories in here. There were a fair few, Jessie Harrell's story about Eros for instance, that I did enjoy, but on the whole I felt like a third wheel.
It's a weird analogy, but I'm using it.
Nevertheless, it's a nice collection for the those who know the authors' various works, or who want to get a taste of them.
Being an anthology I'll just do a generalized review because each story various in length & genre. Whether your Into paranormal, spies, mind reading or Greek mythology there's something for everyone, all stories are YA so if you love YA you will love these. Some stories I liked other I didn't but I really enjoyed having the males point of views (which is basically the whole point of the stories) which some books lack, so having one purely from a males point of view was great & now I have a list of YA books to get into. =)
This story was the whole reason I was interested in the book. I wanted to see how Seth saw Genesis. But I was sort of annoyed because I thought Carter was represented a little differently in this. I know it was from Seth's point of view, but I thought Carter came off less caring in this. But in the series Carter was very much in love with Genesis, in fact I hate to say it but I sort of liked Carter better than Seth. Once again, I found myself wondering what either of them saw in Genesis. She was very bratty and insecure. She annoyed me.
This book has a very cool concept. All the stories are written from the point of view of the males, which makes for a neat idea, e being female and all. That being said, the excerpts and such tended to get a little tedious for me after a while. I found myself putting the book down more and more, having lost interest. There were a few stories which I would like to read more about, and will be looking for those series in the future. But, and I don't know if the remainder of the stories were just too sci-fi for me, or if I just have no interest really in YA romances anymore, but seriously there were a few stories in here that were just not my thing.
It was fantastic getting a glimpse inside so many different fictional YA worlds - especially from the guy's perspective! I don't know what it is about reading a story from the boy's POV. Perhaps it's the fact that not many of the books I read are written that way, but I really enjoyed seeing the guy's side of the story!
This was just a fun and very interesting idea. A little taste of a ton of books, some of them I'd heard of. Others I had no idea the book or the author were out there. These were excerpts of books, pre stories... such a fun mix of everything.
I wish there were more of these compilations out there to try out books or series.
Some stories I loved, some not so much. I figured a neutral three star was the way to go. This sucked for me because I really hate starting a book and not finishing it and this anthology forced me to do just that about 8 times. It wasn't bad, some stories were great, but some stories were not catchy or just not my thing.
I have not had the opportunity to read many of the stories that were referenced in this collection, although the pieces did give me a preview of a lot of stories that I might have missed out on had I not read this book, I acquired at least a half dozen new books for my "Want To Read" shelf.
Very good anthology. Only two of the stories were from books I've read and I really liked them.
Most of the rest made me buy the books so I could read the main story. Two of them were already on my to read list. I definitely say this was worth the read.
i enjoyed reading this. i purchased it because i just finished exiled by rashelle workman and saw she wrote a short in it. i liked most of them, a few of them not so much. the ones i did enjoyed, i'm going to buy from the authors that i would have not known about.
