In today's fast-paced ever-changing society, parents are hit with more controversial, pressure-packed decisions to make than ever before. With the Internet, cable television, and video games bombarding our children and attempting to make an assault on their minds daily, what are parents to do? In today's ever-changing economic and social climate, how do parents find the balance necessary to positively raise their children?
Zig Ziglar was a motivational teacher and trainer who traveled the world over, delivering his messages of humor, hope, and encouragement. As a talented author and speaker, he had international appeal that transcended every color, culture, and career. Recognized by his peers as the quintessential motivational genius of our times, Zig Ziglar had a unique delivery style and powerful messages that earned him many honors. Today he is considered one of the most versatile authorities on the science of human potential. Ten of his twenty-eight books have been on bestseller lists, and his titles have been translated into more than thirty-eight languages and dialects. He was a committed family man, a dedicated patriot, and an active church member. Zig lived in Plano, Texas, with his wife, Jean.
Zig is Zig, so if you don't like the 'Southern Baptist preacher' delivery, you won't like this. However, I think he's got a great grasp on what raising positive kids is all about, and that's why I read the book. I took plenty of notes, and I've got plenty of room for improvement as a father. That being said, I'm doing a damn good job at the same time. :)
If you have an open mind and are looking for another perspective in parenting, this is a good listen. The problem I have is that, his experiences are simply not possible in todays world. Your child 8 year old child cannot legally work for someone and mom and pop stores are getting obliterated by the fast paced Walmart mentality one stop shop minds of todays parents. He learned a lot of valuable in his early childhood because when he was a child, sacrifice was normal. My generation, knows no such term and are spoiled beyond what his generation understands. (Generally Speaking, so don't comment about your story of hardship, I know there are people who have struggled and thrived). What I am talk about is a nation of sacrifice, the depression, a great war. Today if you don't have cable, than people consider that a sacrifice but realistically it is a luxury.
With that said, I do recommend the book because he does have incredible advice in a lot of his speeches, just be aware that some of what he says or how he says it, could rub you the wrong way.
This audio book helped me change the environment of our home. I'm listening to it for the 3rd time now and I absolutely love it. I've recommended it to all of my closest friends and family! I felt as though our older children had better parents than our younger two are getting. That we were on "auto pilot" and not as engaged as we once were. Zig's enthusiasm and guidance helped me to pull us out of that rut and our youngest two are thriving because of it. Even our older two have noticed the changes and have commented on it. I listen in the car or when I'm cleaning house, just to keep the info current in my mind and heart. I feel that every parent has something to learn and I'm so grateful I invested in us with this series!
What a fantastic guide for parents of children any age! Ziglar offers practical, sound advice for many of the day to day challenges we all face. A must read for expecting parents, parents of small children, and parents of teens. This version from Hoopla is particularly great as Mr. Ziglar himself narrates.
