suggested reading for journ class, got a hold of 6th edition. loved the examples used. a lot of the advice is still relevant, but whenever the author talked about using a 'recorder' i laughed a bit.

This is a how-to book in the best traditions. It takes the reader, beginning students of journalism, through the bases and the technicalities of the foundation of journalism. Reporting and writing the news are at the heart of the journalistic enterprise. A grounding in these two areas is critical for all who come to the profession.
News Writing and Reporting for Today's Media is classic as well as contemporary. From the Five W's and H through grammar, beat reporting, attribution and interviewing, the authors show a deep understanding and spice their work with practical examples. I like the introduction of a section on reporting numbers and basic mathematics -reporters have traditionally dodged these areas with not so pleasant consequences. The Ethics chapter is built on the Social Responsibility theory of the press: that theoretical underpinning helps to expand the concept and bring it to life.
