About the author

I've been a self-employed working novelist for the past twenty years. Of all the books I've written I've had just one foreign sale, and that was THE IRISH BRIDE, which was translated into Norwegian, where I understand it was a big hit.

I also make jewelry and I'm a fine needlework artist, specializing in embroidery, thread crochet, and sewing. I love to cook, read, entertain friends, decorate, and pursue various crafts.

I live in the Pacific Northwest near the Columbia River, still within 10 miles of my old high school. I have a Great Pyrenees dog, one cat, a finch, and three chickens who all seem to want to be in my small office while I'm trying to work (except the chickens, although they'd be thrilled to get into the house if I let them). Getting up to step around them is like maneuvering an obstacle course, but they are my children and so dear to me. My hours are kind of goofy--I'm just not a morning person and tend to be up late when the rest of the world is sleeping--and QUIET. No phones, faxes, distractions. Just the kids and me, candles burning, and the elevator music coming out of my CD player.

Before I made the leap to full-time writer, I spent about 12 years working for consulting civil engineers. Riprap, anyone? How about a nice detention pond?

Qué historia tan bonita. Qué bien narra esta autora. Cómo teje poco a poco una tela de araña con los secundarios alrededor de los protagonistas consiguiendo que según avanza el libro muchos de los hilos que daba por sentado no sean lo que parecían. Y en esta ocasión tengo que felicitar la preciosa y cuidada traducción.

Avevo da un po' questo libro nell'ereader, mi aveva colpito la trama, con un'ambientazione diversa dal solito, con una protagonista medico in America durante la prima guerra mondiale, ma non mi aspettavo, iniziando la lettura, di imbattermi nell'epidemia d'influenza che ricorda molto quella che abbiamo vissuto e stiamo ancora vivendo...
Leggendo l'abnegazione di Jessie e di tutto il paese, nel fronteggiare, la gravità di questa epidemia sconosciuta con i pochi mezzi a disposizione, senza mai fermarsi, allo stremo delle forze, non posso dimenticare di esprimere ancora tanta gratitudine e ammirazione a tutti i nostri medici, infermieri, operatori sanitari ❤️...
Naturalmente non manca la storia d'amore e tanto altro...

Ok ok, so I admit that a recurring thought throughout this novel was "1918? That's the year Edward Cullen died!" LMAO I know! I couldn't help it LOL

Seriously though, other than the setting being more "modern" than your typicaly western romance, this was a pretty standard read from Alexis Harrington.. There was a lot of focus on the townspeople and their own relationships, to the point that a lot of it was more of an "historical fiction" than "historical romance".

And honestly? That's not a bad thing. I enjoyed the snapshots and asides of other characters' lives -- Riley fighting in WWI in France, Emmaline trying to eke out a living any way she could in order to better provide for her children, and even the cantankerous Dr. Pearson.

Cole and Jessica (ah how can I not love a heroine named Jess??) were meant to be, but had a lot of issues to work out first. I guessed the twist (well, both of them) early on but it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the novel.

Overall a good 3 1/2. To be perfectly fair, it probably would've been a four, but the time period threw me off a bit what with their telephones and the whole WWI thing. Definitely worth the $2.50ish price over at smashwords.com

Pues nada... al final se ha quedado en 3 estrellitas. Sigue siendo una opinión absolutamente personal, pero es que simplemente esperaba más profundidad en la relación amorosa y menos "previsibilidad", sobre todo al final (eso sin contar con que el "conflicto" se lo ventila en 4 escenitas de nada).
Estoy segura de que gustará a los seguidores de Lavyrle Spencer y quienes busquen un "romance clásico", está bien ambientada (quizá es lo más destacable) y se lee bastante bien.
Sin embargo, yo esperaba más y la relación entre todos los protagonistas me ha dejado fría. Como digo, es algo muy subjetivo y no descarto leer próximas novelas traducidas de la autora.

Mí humilde opinión:

Jessica Layton vuelve a su pueblo en
Powell Springs, Oregón luego de ejercer su profesión de doctora en Nueva York para visitar a su hermana. Tiene buenos recuerdos del lugar donde nació pero una traición la mantuvo lejos.

Cole Braddock. Se habían querido desde niños, se suponía que se iban a casar pero él no la esperó.

Aceptó un trabajo en Seatle así que no se quedará mucho para verlo.

Entonces un incidente hace que tenga que convertiste en la nueva doctora temporal y peor aún...

Una fuerte gripe está contagiando a todos, una epidemia que toma por sorpresa a todos en el pueblo.

Jess deberá enfrentar el desafío de tratar a enfermos en un pueblo con pocos recursos, la pérdida, el rechazo, acusaciones y decepciones.

Al final su futuro y felicidad se reducirá a marcharse o quedarse en el lugar que creyó jamás regresaría.



En casa al amanecer es un libro que elegí porque amo las novelas históricas del oeste, pensé que iba a encontrar la clásica de la dama y el vaquero pero me sorprendió!



No está centrada solo en la historia de amor de Jess y Cole, sino también en esta doctora que ha luchado con su carrera en una época dónde las mujeres doctoras soportaban los perjuicios por ejercer la profesión.

Jessica me pareció muy valiente, una doctora entregada a su trabajo, inteligente y compasiva.

Me encantó como organiza todo en el pueblo ante la epidemia y va tratando con los acontecimientos cotidianos y como evoluciona su relación con Cole, ya que al comienzo se evaden de lo que sienten por el dolor y el resentimiento.

Cole me pareció un hombre con corazón, un duro herrero con principios.

Los personajes secundarios ayudan mucho a la trama, no tienen desperdicio.

Si bien encontré mucha descripción, no me importó porque está escrito de una manera fresca que engancha.

Además que tiene giros inesperados que no ves venir.

Me encantó esa sensación de amor en tiempos difíciles y de tener una segunda oportunidad para la felicidad.

La historia sucede en medio de la Primera Guerra Mundial y la epidemia de 1918. Es interesante, humana y se encuentra una linda historia de amor.

En mí opinión una muy buena lectura de época! De esas que hace tiempo no leía.

Ms. Harrington is good at several things. Most of the time she shows the right amount of historical detail to take us to this place and time. The backdrop of war and epidemic and villains are enough to keep us turning pages through much of the book. Harrington does love/sex scenes well. Her writing sometimes has nice imagery like saying his kisses were like a summer rain, warm, soft and wet or something to that effect.

The things she doesn't do so well include characterization: the characters are cardboard cutouts without nuance. We have a strong, courageous heroine whose only real signs of weakness include not fighting to save her relationship because she is devastated by the breakup and her leaving a job that made her unhappy. Our hero is strong, brave, moral, and handsome. Our major villain practically twirls a mustache. The gruff old woman with the heart of gold who eventually comes to the aid of our heroine is also straight from central casting. I think the reveal about one of the other major characters is meant to surprise us but it doesn't. Actually I liked the minor character of the town prostitute best. The other major weakness of the novel is related to the first This is a romance novel and so we know the hero and heroine coming together is a given but romance readers like to have the bar set higher for the difficulties preventing the couple getting together and we also like to find real surprises along the way which this didn't have.

I thought the material about the brother's experiences overseas was too much off the track of the story and I skipped through it. I suspect from the preview of the sequel that this material is to link us to the next novel.

I think this writer has potential if she improves her characterization and the twists related to the romance.

DNF!

I’ve read 9 of Ms. Harrington’s books but I can’t read this one. I like Jessica but her sister, Amy, is just so self-centered and selfish, the opposite of her sister. I like Cole, too. BUT I can see its going to take the entire book to get past the angst and misunderstanding and lies. 329 pages of nothing but that is just too much. PLUS, there’s going to be sex and not an ounce of anything that leads up to it. No thoughts of even a kiss between the two, nothing. Then suddenly they’re going to jump into bed? No thanks! AND if you read the blurb of the next 2 books you know how this one ends. That’s just silly.

BIG SPOILER
Another reason I won’t be moving on to the next book, or finishing this one (at page 127) is because you met Riley, Cole’s brother, in this book. Not just a page or two but page after page, chapters spent in France where he was in the war, in the rain, in the trenches, sleeping on the wet ground, joking with his men, looking out for them. THEN the author kills him off. I can’t read a book that spends so much time with a secondary character, makes you get to know him and like him, and then the author feels the need to kill him off so another man can have his wife. That’s not for me.

As to the narrator: You can certainly tell this book was narrated in 2012 because the narrator barely tries to make the hero sound manly, and fails, and the other males in the book not at all. She read without emotion, no whispers, no raising her voice in anger, no crying, no nothing. So, no, I can’t recommend the audible version of this book. Even free it’s not worth it.

3,5 stelline abbondanti, ma putroppo non arrivo a 4.
Il romanzo è scritto bene, la traduzione è ottima e non c'è una sbavatura. Ho apprezzato molto l'ambientazione nella piccola cittadina e tutti i personaggi secondari, ben caratterizzati, che hanno dato alla storia quell'aspetto corale che a me piace tanto.
Tuttavia... mah, non so, non mi sono lasciata coinvolgere fino in fondo dai due protagonisti, nonostante fossero bei personaggi. Probabilmente perché non amo le storie d'amore dove i due non si parlano con chiarezza e il presupposto di base, cioè lasciarsi in seguito a telegramma senza chiedere spiegazioni, mi infastidisce parecchio.

It's been a long time since I read a romance with as interesting a premise as Alexis Harrington's Home by Morning. I saw this book on a review site, and the cover art and blurb sucked me in instantly. I downloaded the sample read from Amazon, was so entranced by the story and the strong characterization that I had to buy the book. I read it in a day and a half (okay, I was a vendor at a craft show and read between customers), but when I got home I had to read the rest.
I was not disappointed.

This is a book considered unsaleable by New York publishers, so Ms. Harrington offered it as a Kindle read (and at a very attractive price!) What was the problem? Ms. Harrington chose to set her story during the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic! (As one whose great aunt perished during this time, I was drawn like steel to a magnet.) I find the period refreshing, fascinating and unique-at least in romance fiction. Here we have a world balancing between tradition and modernism, and with the onset of WWI, a cataclysm that changed the world utterly.

Home by Morning is the story of Dr. Jessica Layton who is enroute from New York to take up a research position at a Seattle hospital and stops off in her hometown of Powell Springs, Oregon...and lands smack into the middle of the influenza epidemic. Daughter of the town's deceased practitioner, Jessica left to study medicine in the East, and remained, leaving behind her childhood love, Cole Braddock. Cole ranches and runs the town's smithy, and he is courting Jessica's younger sister Amy.

Jessica is pressed into service since the town is desperate and the new doctor hasn't yet arrived. But there are conflicts and misunderstandings that make Jess' position difficult in every way.

The story has three threads that author Harrington skillfully weaves into a cohesive tapestry. And she has created secondary and tertiary characters who are not what they seem. Cole's brother is near the Argonne, fighting in the trenches, his wife takes care of the ranch, while Cole, his arthritic father and a hired hand ship horses to the front. In between this is the devastation of influenza in the community, the heartbreak of lost lives and the gut-wrenching futility of trying to deal with a disease for which they have no cure. I won't expose the ending, but it will surprise you. Many times while reading, I had a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes.

Ms. Harrington is a masterful storyteller, using skillful writing, great dialogue and wonderful imagery. This is a must-read book and an informative look into a period in history that seems glossed over. Brava Ms. Harrington for sharing your enormous talent in this superb story. A strong five stars.

This was an extremely easy, but pleasurable read. The Spanish Influenza strikes a small north western town during World War I. The book follows a young female doctor, given a rare opportunity to do a research study in Seattle, but stops over at her home-town for a visit and ends up staying since the small town is void of a doctor during the trying times.

With the arrival of the "permanent" Doctor for the town, a couple of scandals occur, including one regarding the Doctor not wishing to stay in a "backwoods" facility.

Leaving the small town, once again, without a physician.

Cliche, the heroine returns and the town is rescued.

Its a good easy read and I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys Historical Fiction type novels.

This is a great read.

It takes place from October to November 1918 in a small town in Oregon. Jessica Layton is a woman doctor who stops in her home town on her way to Seattle. She arrives just as the great influenza epidemic breaks out and the town has no doctor. She stays on to help the sick and dying.

While all this is going on, Jessica is dealing with the fact that the love of her life is about to marry her sister. In addition to all this, the town minister has set his sites on Jessica but he is not as Godly as many think he is.

Such a good story! I'm going to begin reading the next book in this series.

Ben scritto, soprattutto nella prima metà, poi la storia si perde e l'epidemia di Spagnola, che miete vite nel piccolo paese di Powell Springs, improvvisamente sparisce dimenticata. Così anche la protagonista dimostra carattere nella prima parte del libro, diventa evanescente nella seconda parte, dove si dovrebbero stringere le maglie della storia.
Un libro carino ma non lascia molto.

Jessica è in tutto e per tutto un’eroina moderna: è istruita, intelligente, non si fa mettere i piedi in testa da nessuno, è orgogliosa e piena di dignità. Essere un medico in un’epoca in cui le donne erano ancora relegate alla cura della casa, dei figli e della campagna non è facile. Jessica si sente spesso denigrare in quanto donna, ma il suo carattere forte ed impulsivo le permette di rispondere per le rime a chi non ha fiducia nelle sue capacità professionali e l’abnegazione che dimostra verso il suo lavoro e i suoi pazienti sono davvero ammirevoli.
Anche Cole è un gran lavoratore, come il resto della sua famiglia, oltre ad essere generoso e altruista. È anche un uomo orgoglioso e testardo, almeno tanto quanto Jessica. Questo aspetto speculare del loro carattere ha messo loro i bastoni tra le ruote: l’attrazione e l’amore che c’era tra i due non è mai svanito, ma il risentimento, le incomprensioni e l’orgoglio che non riescono ad accantonare, rischiano di separarli per sempre.
La parte romance del romanzo è delineata con delicatezza ed è molto emozionate, anche se avrei preferito una maggior attenzione alle vicende di Jessica e Cole soprattutto nel finale del libro, dove la storia si disperde un po’ troppo su altri personaggi.
La narrazione in terza persona è particolarmente indicata perché permette all’autrice di spaziare tra le varie sotto trame, portando in primo piano le storie dei personaggi secondari del racconto, gli abitanti di Powell Springs, in quello che si rivela un perfetto affresco dell’America rurale dell’epoca. Nel villaggio non possono mancare lo sceriffo, il pastore, la guaritrice, il bar dove si serve solo whiskey a lazzaroni sfaccendati, i vecchi contadini ed allevatori dalle mani callose e la lingua tagliente, l’ufficio per inviare i telegrammi e una casa isolata dove vive una donna che vende se stessa per dare il pane ai propri figli.

Well this was a real drag. Young woman defies convention to leave her small town and head east to medical school. She receives a job offer in Seattle and stops in Oregon on her way to visit her family which consists of a sister who is being courted by the heroine’s former boyfriend who dumped her via telegram while she was away studying. Without giving anything way, just let me say this one has a little of everything that really chaps my honey. First you have the sister Could be replaced with any other stereotypical bitch character) willing to lie and cheat to get what she wants. Then you have the hero who is ridiculously easy to manipulate and who dumps the heroine and then thinks courting her younger more socially acceptable sister is a swell idea. Finally, we have the heroine who has overcome so much to fulfill her potential and she’s willing to give it up for a guy who is weak and not willing to give up squat for her. Thanks, but no thanks.

I debated giving this book a 2-star rating, but I only paid $2 for this book on Amazon so I decided to give it a 3-star. The support characters and plotline are 2-dimensional and predictable, but I found myself caring about Dr. Jessica Layton, Cole Braddock and the town of Powell Springs.

The author tried to mask that this was a romance novel by using over-complicated descriptions. When the love scene finally arrived, Harrington really shined. I would've also liked Harrington to focus more on the war front - she kept flashing back to Riley Braddock randomly. It didn't really fit the story flow, but I think she did an excellent job of transporting the readers to the WWI trenches.

This was the perfect book to follow up the nonfiction book I just read. Not too heavy with a little bit of romance. :-)

I enjoyed this story mainly because of the setting. I love the west and this time period and I liked learning about this epidemic I had never heard of. I liked that I had no idea who had "done it" till it was revealed. The two main characters were a little weak too me and the reason they stayed apart was such a silly one. If you loved someone that much you would find out why they changed there mind. I know I would. I would not constantly avoid talking about it either, it just was a weak point for me. This was an adult romance novel with a little bit of Christianity in it. There was a not too detailed sex scene and talk of war and violence.

I have for a long time wanted to read more books of Alexis Harrington so it was a real treat getting it so easily for my new kindle. It was a bit different from the other books I have read, but I liked to get more insight it the terrible epidemic of 1918. Now and then I had to smile because a lot of the premises gave me strong reminiscence of the epidemic in Dr. Quinn :-) I was a bit puzzled, however, over some of the story lines that seemed unresolved and unnecessary, but discovering that a sequel is on its way explains it. I'll be looking forward to that.

A great story about a period I've never read before but used to hear my mother talk about. The information about the Spanish flu epidemic was very interesting. There is a sequel coming, Home by Nightfall about the brother who went off to war. As an ebook, the format was excellent. One book of Harrington's that I read in the past was good but the formatting was terrible.

Jessica non può farci nulla, il paese è piccolo, infatti, e non è facile sfuggire ai ricordi né alle persone. In una giornata grigia, con il telegramma nelle mani tremanti e le lacrime che le rigavano il volto, aveva giurato che tornare a Powell Springs, anche solo per una visita, le avrebbe solo spezzato il cuore un’altra volta

Il passare del tempo non è servito a lenire il dolore ma il buonsenso prevale e così Cole (questo è il nome), dapprima brusco e insofferente, pian piano riesce a mettere da parte il risentimento nei confronti della donna e a comportarsi con lei in maniera civile. Tra i due il rancore è tanto, sia l’uno che l’altra hanno molto da rinfacciarsi. Dopo un amore durato quasi una vita, nessuno di loro ha ancora capito bene i motivi della fine di un sentimento che sembrava destinato a durare nel tempo. Di chi è stata la colpa della fine di tutto? Jessica è partita, è vero, ma sarebbe tornata un giorno. Cole, da parte sua, non ha avuto il fegato di aspettarla. Rimasto solo, ha preferito lasciarsi consolare dalla piccola e dolce Amy, finendo così per corteggiarla.


«Sono sicura che mi chiederà di sposarlo uno di questi giorni, e voglio un fidanzamento breve.Ci sposeremo nella chiesa del reverendo Jacobsen con tutti i nostri amici e farò modificare l’abito della mamma per adattarlo a me.


Ahi, che tormento per entrambi, rivedersi dopo tanto! Ma poco male, pensa Jessica, è questione di giorni poi tutto finirà, lei andrà via di nuovo e non ci penserà più. Niente di più falso! Infatti a complicare la già difficile vita dei nostri protagonisti e di tutti gli abitanti del paese, ci si mette anche il fato dispettoso. Un’epidemia di influenza si abbatte sullo stato e, in poco tempo, getta in ginocchio tutta Powell Springs. Jessica è l’unico medico in zona al momento e, visto che quello designato a prendere il posto lasciato libero dopo la morte di suo padre non è ancora arrivato, non può far altro che prendersi cura dei pazienti. In breve tempo la situazione diventa insostenibile. Il numero dei malati aumenta a vista d’occhio, la malattia non perdona, e in molti perdono la vita. L’angoscia e la paura di non farcela sono all’ordine del giorno. Ma Jessica è forte, caparbia e competente, non si lascia abbattere più di tanto. Sa che sarà dura, ma non molla, non può, non deve. Non è semplice per lei muoversi in un paese di bigotti superstiziosi che oltre tutto non accettano di farsi curare da un medico donna. La nostra eroina deve combattere contro i pregiudizi e i pettegolezzi che rischiano di complicare una situazione già di per sé abbastanza difficile. Ma lei va avanti a testa alta, affrontando stoicamente ogni difficoltà e ricacciando indietro una ad una, tutte le accuse e le infamità che le piovono addosso. Jessica, pur essendo una donna emancipata, soffre la cattiveria di quella gente dalla mentalità ristretta. Ma è anche una donna innamorata che combatte contro se stessa per non cadere in tentazione, l’unica, quella rappresentata dalla presenza costante di Cole al suo fianco.


Poi, proprio mentre stava per abbassare il vetro, vide un movimento. Qualcuno sul marciapiede di sotto. Sforzandosi di vedere nel buio, aspettò che la figura si spostasse nel quadrato di luce gettato dalla sua stessa finestra. Cole Braddock. Avrebbe voluto che si trattasse di qualcun altro, ma era grata di vedere qualcuno, chiunque fosse. E sapeva che lui si sarebbe mosso subito.

Cole è un uomo forte e onesto, dedito al proprio lavoro, pronto a farsi in quattro e il suo aiuto è fondamentale nel momento del bisogno. Con la città in piena emergenza, Cole tiene a bada il proprio orgoglio e scende in campo al fianco di Jessica. Sa che è la cosa giusta da fare e non gli importa se così facendo causerà qualche chiacchiera di troppo, Amy lo capirà, dopo tutto. Già, Amy, la sorella minore di Jessica, la quale, a differenza della Layton maggiore, è dolce, timida, non certo attiva, sicura di sé e indipendente come l’altra. Da sempre dedita alla casa, la giovane incarna tutte le caratteristiche per diventare, un giorno, una devota moglie e una brava madre. Lo sanno bene tutti e ne è convinto anche Cole anche se per lui è difficile dimenticare il passato.
Accanto ai principali si muovono molti altri personaggi minori, tutti importanti per la loro caratterizzazione ai fini della trama e non solo. Ognuno di loro, infatti, incarna un aspetto saliente proprio del periodo.
Su uno sfondo pieno di dolori e gioie, bugie e verità, cattiverie gratuite e gelosie, una tragedia si consuma e, grazie a un colpo di scena, il mistero si risolve e l’amore sboccia prepotente.
Vi consiglio il romanzo, non resterete delusi. La storia che si sviluppa tra le pagine è adatta sì ad un pubblico adulto, ma va benissimo per tutti quelli che hanno voglia di lasciarsi trasportare dalle emozioni e farsi cullare da un romanzo dal gusto agro dolce ambientato in una cittadina americana di provincia. In esso troviamo tutti gli ingredienti tipici di una ambiente chiuso e bigotto. Scorrendo le pagine scopriamo le gelosie, i tradimenti, i misteri, le superstizioni, le malignità, sentimenti contrastanti sapientemente miscelati insieme dalla mano dell’autrice che è riuscita a confezionare, attraverso un linguaggio semplice e diretto, un libro più che gradevole. L’unica pecca è data dalla traduzione che a mio avviso, in alcuni punti, avrebbe potuto essere curata meglio. Ma la presenza di refusi grammaticali, non inficiano per nulla la bellezza di una storia avvincente e autentica.

Premesso che ho scelto questa lettura per il titolo, credevo di imbattermi in chissà quale storia intricata che nasce dalle trame delle quotidianità di oggi.
Invece... Siamo in piena Prima Guerra Mondiale e l’America invia uomini e cavalli in Europa per far fronte alla minaccia tedesca; quelli rimasti in patria devono occuparsi di mandare avanti l’economia del paese come meglio possono. Anche le donne.
E la protagonista è, appunto, una donna medico. A cavallo tra l'emancipazione della sua professione e la fortuna di aver studiato, la protagonista è anche prosciugata dalla caccia alle streghe per una liason non propriamente ben vista da certa bigotta gente di paese.
Non aspettatevi grandi colpi di scena o coinvolgimenti emotivi da cardiopalma. Sebbene la storia sia piacevole (ma per decollare dovete aspettare diversi capitoli!) e i personaggi ben caratterizzati dal punto di vista emotivo, tutta la trama si sviluppa in maniera troppo scontata togliendo al lettore il gusto della suspense. Tanto che, a volte, sembra di scadere in un romanzetto rosa.
In questo particolare momento di emergenza sanitaria, di certo non mi aspettavo di rivivere in questo libro le vicissitudini di tante persone colpite dalla terribile influenza del 1918 e dal Covid-19 del tutto odierno e palpabile.
Lo consiglio se cercate una lettura distensiva.

Una historia ambientada en la sufrida cosa Oeste de los Estados Unidos a principios del siglo XX, nos cuenta la historia de Jess, una joven médico que tiene que regresar a su pueblo natal rumbo a su próximo trabajo como investigadora médica en Seatle.

Es un libro de corte romántico que toca temas como la primera guerra mundial, la peste, los estragos económicos y de bajas familiares por la guerra y lo que una mujer revolucionaria tiene que pasar para ser aceptada dentro de su profesión.

Este es el tercer libro que me leo de esta autora, no dudo que no sea del agrado de muchos, sin embargo, es de agradecer que hayan escritoras serias en este genero, que tenga la capacidad narrativa para contarte una historia, que refleja si, la sencillez que debe contener el genero pero no por eso dejar de lado la importancia de escribir bien una buena historia.

Me gusta mucho como escribe Harrington y me gustan mucho sus historias, disfrute mucho este libro, fácil de leer, sencillo, una buena historia que me aleja un poco de esa oscuridad en la que normalmente me veo envuelta en mi genero preferido, a veces hay que salirse un poco de lo acostumbrado y suspirar un poco por romances que no son nuestros.

En route to Seattle from New York, Jessica Layton stops by her hometown, Powell Springs. She comes face to face with Cole Braddock, her first and only love, courting her younger sister Amy.

Intending to only stay before heading to Seattle, for her upcoming job, Jessica finds herself forced to stay when the influenza epidemic hits town. While attending to the townspeople, Jessica finds herself caught between the drama of those around her. Discriminated by some of the townspeople, due to her being a female doctor, Jessica has very few allies in the town, allies that doesn't grow much after hidden secrets are revealed of those close to her, secrets that would eventually drive her out of town.

I enjoyed this story. I liked how Jessica was written. Despite learning the truths about the lies told to her, she still resolved to be her own strong person. Cole, on the other hand, is determined to start over. Something that while Jessica wants to do, but not in the town that the majority has turned their back on her. Despite it all, Jessica does turn out to be the better person.

partiamo dal dire che le storie ambientate nel cosiddetto west a inizio novecento sono poche e ho sempre molta curiosità di leggerle
qui abbiamo poi una donna dottore, che scopriamo poi essere in realtà interessata alla ricerca
tanti i temi presenti nel libro: l'epidemia di influenza(che ricorda moltissimo la pandemia 2020), i pregiudizi verso una donna medico, la IWW e tutto l'orrore vero che nascondeva, il fanatismo religioso delle piccole comunità
i capitoli sono strutturati a POV diversi per cui la lettura risulta scorrevole: la storia d'amore in sè è nettamente in secondo piano per cui si resta un pò incerti in alcuni passaggi, infatti la conclusione sui due protagonisti è a mio parere affrettata

A cute novel with in foreground a love story and the Spanish disease, and in the background WW1

The book starts in 1918, the last year of WW1, Jessica, a doctor who worked in New York, come home for a couple of days to vist his sister, on her way to a new job in Seattle. While she is in town the spanish epidemic, break out in all it's violence. So she start to take care of all the ill people in town, and tries to do her best while the official doctor is on it's way.
While she is here she meets Cole a boy which she almost been engage to.
Will she remain in Powell Springs or head to Washington, starting a new job and a new life?

Lots of interesting characters. I liked the setting of a small town still part the of western frontier even though there were cars and a telephone at the doctor's office but there were also horse and buggies. It was 1918 and the town was hit by the influenza without a current physician. To the rescue was the lead character, a female doctor (and daughter of the town's previous Dr.) visiting her home town before heading to the big city of Seattle to work in a hospital.

The lead character was strong and independent which is why I was disappointed by the ending that ended up feeling very rushed and some characters' stories didn't get resolved.
