Back in the day, when I had the time and motivation, I took chess fairly seriously. A set of books by Fred Reinfeld helped me get a better sense of chess.

This was one of those books. There is a nice introduction that provides background on chess (including the evolution of the game). It is a book made for those who are rather untutored. The first chapter notes the moves of the various pieces that are allowable, how the pieces are placed on the board, what check and checkmate represent, castling, and so on. The rudiments, as it were. The book proceeds as follows: chapter 3 considers checkmate patterns and how to check attacks; chapter 4 examines opening play; chapter 4 looks at the endgame.

I spent a lot of time working on openings and this was one source that I used. As Reinfeld suggests, I normally began with Pawn to King's Four. There are many suggested rules (Don't use the Queen too soon) illustrated by games played by the masters (such as Morphy). One also learns some basic openings, such as the Sicilian Defense.

All in all, as I look at this book again, I recognize that it was a fine volume for someone just starting out. Nothing fancy, but it sufficed for me.

Good read, pretty beginner principles and I expected it to be a bittt more sophisticated but good to review everything and good examples. I liked the little bits of history and the player bios. Annoyingly used the old style of chess notation which kept tripping me up and is so much worse.
