Libro di un'importanza fondamentale per l'argomento. La faccio breve: la cosiddetta nell'antichità "Arabia Felix" (cioè l'attuale Yemen) rimane una delle civiltà più misteriosa di tutte per la mancanza assoluta di testi letterari e per le scarsissime informazioni degli storici antichi. Nonostante ciò, il mito della terra dell'incenso e della regina di Saba ha influenzato generazioni di occidentali, dall'antico Israele di Salomone passando per Roma fino ad oggi.

Le difficoltà dei luoghi e la lontananza hanno reso lo Yemen terra di difficilissima esplorazione e indagine archeologica. Fino agli anni '70 del Novecento lo Yemen era quasi "vergine". Gli archeologi italiani guidati appunto dall'autore di questo libro, Alessandro de Maigret, hanno dato un contributo fondamentale allo studio della civiltà sudarabica di epoca protostorico e dell'età del bronzo.

Ad infamia del governo Monti e di ogni spending review, l'istituto italiano per l'Africa e l'Oriente, che ha compiuto queste scoperte, venne chiuso per mancanza di fondi nel 2011. Detto questo, il libro è molto completo per la ricostruzione della storia archeologica dello Yemen e per il tentativo di abbozzare una storia dell'Arabia Felix, in cui ci si deve dibattere tra problemi cronologici quasi insormontabili (ci sono sovrani che possono aver regnato nel IV come nell'VIII secolo a.C., tanta è la scarsità delle nostre fonti). Apprezzabilissimi i capitoli finali in cui, pur tra mille difficoltà, l'autore cerca di delineare una storia spirituale di questi popoli che, sembra, fossero sostanzialmente privi di un clero che non fosse semplice amministratore dei beni di un tempio; la spiritualità sudarabica, in sostanza, era totalmente interiore e personale.

Consigliatissimo anche per la ricchezza di mappe, illustrazioni e tavole a colori, tutte pressoché introvabili presso altre fonti. Unica piccolissima carenza, avrei voluto qualche commento in più sulle fonti greco-romane che parlano dello Yemen.

Yemen is surely the most beautiful and interesting part of the Arabian peninsula. This excellent study takes us from Prehistoric times up to just before the Islamic period. The legendary Queen of Sheba may not have existed outside the pages of the Bible (or the Koran), but nevertheless reflects the truth of a confident, wealthy and outward looking culture whose power and influence were based on the spice trade. Maigret takes us through some of the thornier questions - such as the disputed chronlogy of the earlier kingdoms, and the disputed significance of the different kingly titles of mukarrib and malik. There is tragedy and bloodshed aplenty - endemic internecine warfare, Roman invasion, and - in an unusual inversion - a king who converts to Judaism and conducts a large scale pogrom against Christians in consequence. The figurative sculptures have a naive but vigorous style, and the Sabaean script - carved into many rock faces and inscriptions - has a similar crude beauty, not unlike Viking runes. The religious diversity and the figurative art all came to a sudden end with the arrival of Islam, of course. But the internecine bloodletting continues to this day, alas.
