When I have a book that I know I'm going to absolutely love, I will save it, just so I can read it at that perfect moment, when I can savor the experience.
This book I've been saving for more than 30 years.
Some of that was in part to not having the rest of the series. I knew I was going to enjoy this just from the peek at the first page, and I imagined the horrible frustration that would result in not being able to read the rest of the books. Ah, but in the age of Amazon, that problem was solved. I do have the entire series. And I'm glad I do.
The Tuckers is a family that is so utterly real and unspoiled. In an era of Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, where even the Bobbsey Twins have servants, it's nice to see a family that's been struggling, and scrimping, and saving to get where they want to go. And who are still going to have to struggle a bit to build a home in a new town. This is something I don't often see, especially in vintage books, and so it's a treat to read about it here
But then take the family - who actually squabble and fight and play pranks and get frustrated, and through all that still love each other. Yet each character has so much room for growth and change - and they DO...oh my. This is my absolute fantasy of the 'large family fiction for children' family of books that I love to collect.
Is it any wonder I saved this book?
And so we have a family, a new house, difficult neighbors, struggles of fitting in, and even a little bit of a mystery all rolled into one. Perfection for those of us who love just that kind of book.
I cannot wait to read the next one! (and I promise, it won't be 30 years before I do this time around...)
I loved these books when I was a child. A few years ago I managed to buy all I knew of second hand online. Today I find a title I don't remember ever reading. I'm looking forward to tracking it down!
