“If the language of the scriptures at first seems strange to you, keep reading. Soon you will come to recognize the beauty and power found on those pages” Boyd K Packer
I’m no scriptorian, but 5 stars to my final nonfiction of the year!
The New Testament might be my least favorite book of scripture. I wanted to give it 3 stars here, but felt ‘pressure’ to give 4 or more. I know it sounds sacrilegious, but that’s the way it is.
I don’t know how many times I’ve read the NT, but I read it intensively in 2018 and now I read it for the Lenten period.
I think my main problem is I don’t trust the translations. I wonder if it was like the telephone game and each translation veered a little from the one before until you have some extreme differences. But, who really knows? No one living.
There are still some beautiful and inspiring parts, of course.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Even in the days immediately following Christ's ministry on earth, the seeds of dissension had been sown by the adversary. Peter, James, John, Paul, and other apostles struggled to hold the churches together. The atmosphere was such that John the Revelator was inspired to give his foretelling of the end of the world in an attempt to steer the the burgeoning faithful aright.
This book reveals the incredible story of Jesus Christ. It is a story that will never go away, will never be destroyed or erased from history. It stands forever and it firmly establishes the destiny of the human race, whether you like it or not. I would say read it at your own peril, for it would have been better to have never known, than once having received, to turn away completely.
But I would also say, read it if you greatly desire to know the truth, for the truth will set you free.
