This was a YA paranormal story featuring a new main character.

Jessica was an okay character, but it felt really weird to be following her around instead of Daisy!

The storyline in this was about Jessica finding out that she was a ‘virago’ – a type of special warrior, and then having to deal with a bunch of zombies. I found this one pretty dull though, and I got a bit bored.

The ending to this was okay, but I found this one quite boring overall.

Edit: 7/21/13 Not bad at all. It won't let me undo my disappointed.

So there is no Daisy or Ryan or Sam. They are mentioned, but not interacted with. However, Flow is a major character which is cool. Several of the minor characters are also in this. Basically Jessica finds out that she is a virago, a warrior women who protects her town. There are 4 of them all together including Flo who trains them. Like all the other Dead Is... books, there is something shady and paranormal going on and our MC has to figure it out. The Romance was a little annoying, but I have to remember she is a freshman. I suppose Perez did this do cater to a younger crowd and/ or make it last longer until she graduate. Yes, I will more than likely read the next ones, although I don't want to buy them.

Ok, I get making a spin off of a series or focusing on other characters(this girl wasn't even a main character barely mentioned previously), but she should have made a new series from this one. Getting all of us Die Hard Daisy and Ryan fans excited over a new book for nothing. Don't get me wrong I'm sure it will be a great story, but I feel it will leave something to be desired. Just because Daisy is college aged, doesn't mean they cant continue. Morganville Vamps is huge and she was in college. Oh well what can I say...

Book 1 in a new paranormal, mystery series for young teens

I'm a big fan of Marlene Perez's Nightshade novels, a humorous, paranormal, mystery series for young adults. The first five books center on Daisy Giordano, a magically gifted teenager who lives in Nightshade, a quirky little town filled with many other magical residents besides Daisy. When this book was released I excitedly assumed that it would be another Daisy book. I was initially disappointed when I discovered this book centers on a brand new heroine, 14-year-old Jessica Walsh, and Daisy is not even in it, other than a few mentions as someone Jessica only knows on sight. However, some familiar faces are in the story, such as Circe Silvertongue and Flo and her invisible brother from the town's diner, and Jessica herself soon won me over.

Jessica is just beginning her freshman year at Nightshade High School. She's a spunky girl and the author has presented her very believably as a young teenager. I would assume that, if this series has five books as the Daisy series did, that we will experience Jessica as she progresses through high school until, like Daisy, she is about to begin college.

Since this is a paranormal series, and teen novels all have to varying degrees the theme of "coming of age," naturally enough in this first book in the series Jessica has a magical coming of age as she discovers that she is a "Virago," a warrior protector whose mission is to guard the residents of Nightshade. Viragos are warned of impending danger by a special mark that looks like a tattoo. Jessica and a team of other teen Viragos come together to attempt to solve a mystery of why many of the girls at Jessica's school have become devoted to a new boy at school, to the point of obsession and outbreaks of violence. And on a personal level, Jessica is particularly worried because one of these girls is her best friend.

The main plot of this story is the mystery, but as in the Daisy series, there is a romantic subplot and, I am happy to report, there is no love triangle! Instead, Jessica has one highly sympathetic love interest, Dominic Gray, the cute-but-moody lead singer for a local band called Side Effects May Vary.

This book is clearly targeted at teens age 12-14, but it provides such innocent, harmless reading fun that children as young as 9-10 who are strong readers could safely enjoy it as well. Perez is a talented writer who has created a fascinating magical world in the community of Nightshade. The next book in the series will release soon, and I am greatly anticipating reading it.

I rate this book as follows:

Heroine: 4 stars
Subcharacters: 5
Fantasy World-Building: 5
Writing: 5
Mystery Plot: 4
Romantic Subplot: 5
Overall: 5

I like the Dead Is series, I really do. It's just so predictable sometimes! In this installment, I immediately figured out that Edgar and his ant farm were behind the zombie girls. I knew right away that Selena was using her magic to make Dominic like her. And as soon as I read about Brooke's smirk after the snake debacle, I figured out that she was the one sabotaging Circe. I was really frustrated with how long it took Jessica to solve these obvious "mysteries". I seriously wanted to shake Jess and yell the answers in her face, which made the book less fun to read. However, like the other books in the series, this was a light, humorous read that I enjoyed. And the giant queen ant did manage to take me by surprise.

Too cringy and not needed. I liked the idea of learning about other side characters but the change of the main character to a barely mentioned side character after 5 books… threw me off. I honestly did not like it. Hoping the last two make up for this one being so bad.

Marlene Perez made it pretty evident in this book that the adventures of Daisy Giordano were over and she was getting some well deserved peace after 5 books. She was of course mentioned, no one could possible forget her and the great mysteries she solved, but she was never interacted with in this book. But that doesn’t mean the adventures are over in the town of Nightshade...far from it. Now we get brought not too far from home. To Daisy’s next door neighbour Jessica (love the same by the way). You might remember her as Sean’s (Sam’s boyfriend and Ryan’s best friend) sister. And you remember (which I don’t blame you if you don’t, it took be a while to remember all the details) she helped kick some series butt when the dance/prom was coming down all around them, and a mysterious tattoo—reminding us of one pretty cool diner waitress—appeared on her body.
I thought it was all going to be over after book 5. That’s it, they’re in University, a lot of people have died and suffered, the story ends here. But a smile broke out across my face when I found out a different character in the Nightshade community was taking over, and of course some familiar faces (Poppy, Rose, Wolfgang) make some appearance.
Marlene sticks to what is familiar and what we know and does not disappoint when she takes the point of view of a freshmen in high school and introduces us to a new side of Nightshade, one that protects the community like Warriors.
And of course we have Jessica who is a lot like Daisy only with different talents and characteristics but also very unsure of herself. We watch as Jessica navigates the world of paranormal, high school and love with a firm hand and strong heart.
It was a cute quick read and I can’t wait for #7
Good:
Jessica—not only does she have an awesome name, but I like the idea of an almost Amazon like society that are created to defend the community. On top of that she is also stronger than Daisy in many ways: Physically, emotionally. She can kick butt and doesn’t take or play games with the guys she’s dating.
Dominic—He is obviously sexy, he’s the lead singer of a band, and an oracle. Lovely
Bad:
Like the other novels in the Dead Is series it is a short quick read and sometimes that’s not the best as some things feel rushed and crammed. It almost seems like the characters don’t have any time for reflection, which doesn’t allow us as readers a lot of time to reflect, things just happen one after the other. I guess we almost don’t get to know Jessica Walsh that much; just what she does in some tight situations. But, luckily, because it’s a paranormal series it all plays out over time
Overall (Writing style, story line, and general):
Overall the book was cute as always, the characters were all individually different and there were some that were just as bad as others were clearly good. I just wish the book would almost be a little longer with more details and emotion to warrant a 5/5

The Dead Is series are little bon-bons books. They are small and sweet and light. I was excited to see a new book by Marlene Perez was coming out (as I always am) and went into the book knowing that it was going to be about somebody besides the beloved Daisy and her boyfriend Ryan. That said, I couldn't help but be somewhat disappointed with this book. While the town of Nightshade is as interesting as ever I felt that there were some real pacing problems while the author tried to balance between exposition of old characters for readers new to this series and setting up her new characters.

Dead is a Battlefield follows Jessica, Sean's little sister; her best friend Eva; and her love interest Dominic. Jessica is a virago, warrior women who protect their cities, along with Dominic's sister and Nightshade's favorite waitress, Flo. Something not right in the town of Nightshade, of course, and it's up to this team of girls to figure out what is going on. This time it's a bunch of teenage girl groupies/zombies who are connected to the new shop in town and the boy who works there. Jessica especially wants to figure out the mystery because her best friend is one of them.

Meanwhile, Dominic is acting weird. Sometimes he acts like he really likes her and other times he seems to like Selena, Circe's niece.

Again, I didn't love this book, but I'm hoping the pacing will become more even after this first book. Also, Jessica just wasn't as interesting to me as Daisy. Daisy's family was more interesting, Ryan more yummy, her power...more powerful. On top of that, this installment is number 6. Even with the character switch, it's hard to keep up the excitement through that many installments.

Regardless, I will be on the look-out for the next book. I truly enjoy Marlene Perez's writing and will always read what she comes out with.

Ready for a new character on the Nightshade scene? Author Marlene Perez delivers a humorous, exciting book once again. The reader is introduced to Jessica, a seemingly normal teenage girl. Jessica notices a creeping tattoo(ish) image on her arm, she isn't quite sure what it is and if she should be worried. When she meets with Flo and a few other girls, not by choice, she discovers that she is a Virago. A Virago is a female warrior who is called upon to help when there is evil afoot. Jessica isn't quite sure about the source of evil, but it is undeniable that there is something off, once again, in Nightshade.

Jessica's character was easy to like. She was very easy to relate to as well, comes off as a clever, brave, and somewhat sassy teenager. The secondary characters are fun to get to know, particularly the love interest. There is a subplot concerning Jessica's growing relationship with Dominic, the reader will be able to look forward to the chance of some romance incorporated in the plot with the mystery and action. There will be at least one facet of the plot for every reader.

The events were fast-paced, the author always handles the events in an orderly, detailed, and exciting manner. There are several unexpected scenes and discoveries that will keep the reader guessing. This book was very hard to put down, many readers will finish within a day or two of picking the book up. This book is highly recommended to young adult/teen readers.

In a city where the paranormal is the norm, Jess learns she’s a part of an ancient line of warrior women, and Nightshade High’s newest freshman is finding life is all about the fight. From her best friend’s suddenly lovesick fiend routine, to the strange romantic rock star triangle between herself, a beautiful sorceress. Jessica Walsh is going to have to battle it out for what she wants and the ones she loves, along with saving the city from a zombie invasion.

Marlene Perez’s Dead Is Series continues with a fresh face and new take on Nightshade. These are not complex thought provoking books, but they never fail to be fun, and full of mystery and a little romance. The lighthearted quirky nature of the books keep them from being boring or unappealing for older readers, but they do show talent and makes me wonder how great a more complicated story would be in Perez’s hands.

Perez takes simple story lines and surrounds them with interesting characters and ideas set in a fun captivating world. The Dead Is Series is a light and refreshing palette cleanser, that fells like a tasty satisfying snack between heavier more complicated books. If you’re looking for a quick escape any Dead Is book will do the trick.

Straight to the point, Here's a brief summary, Jessica the main character starts in this type mysterious town called Nightshade,(really shady). The story starts with her brothers grad night party and some sort of disaster that happened there that leads her to believe her fighting abilities are immense. She just started her freshman year in nightshade high but soon discovers her little town is not so perfect and the girls go boy crazy about about a new kid at school. Their love soon turns into some sort of violence as if they are controlled by this mysterious
"new" kid. Also as something happens to the old lead singer of a so called band, Side effects may vary (pretty sketchy) the old singer is replaced by a new singer who is apparently famous and has a strong fan base majority girls, but Jessica develops a crush for him. By like the middle of the story the authors states that one day a mysterious tattoo appear on her upper arm and whenever there is danger her tattoo moves or tingles. She then learns she is a virago which is like some sort of warrior destined to protect their town from evil type stuff. The story doesn't really make sense and there is no background for Jessica except that she's a freshman and a fighting warrior. I liked that she was a freshman starting her first year of high school because i felt that at that point i could relate because i am also a freshman. I also like how she’s confident and adventurous in terms of just accepting that she was a virago. I disliked how again there's was no background about her or her family. Also how they did not includes lots of details about the disaster at grad night. It could have been better if they added a better plot than “just hey i'm a warrior i fight evil and have a new boyfriend “like a big twist. Like if her boyfriend Dominic was behind all of it,(all the boy crazy girl stuff) i would have never expected that. I think this book is for young adults and anyone who is looking for bad romance and action. In a way it sort of reminds me or the show Riverdale in how it's kind of pointless and how secrets are unraveled with pointless romances but it's still good. I would give it 4 stars because it's readable just not the best, like it could have been better still but regardless it's a good book and very enjoyable for a young adult audience. At the end of the book, I felt sort of disappointed because all that was said basically was that her boyfriend found out that she was a virago and was okay with it. like that it! It was upsetting. But, overall, its okay and yeah if you like weird romance and unexplained action this is the book for you.

This was genuinely much better than I was expecting it to be. I felt that the writing was much more mature than the original Dead Is series, but I think that this is true because Jessica as a character is more serious than Daisy. The blending between old characters and new characters is fairly seamless, and I love that we got to see Flo spotlighted so acutely. That being said, I would have loved more glimpses of their training and maybe just a little more connection between the story and the giant ant. I understand how Perez was building up to it with notions of the fungus and the ant farm, but it just needed a bit more coherence to seal the deal. Overall, I was very pleased, and I will likely continue reading the other two books in the spinoff series.

I got this book because I thought it was part of Perez's "Dead Is...." series, which I really like a lot. The first one was "Dead Is the New Black" and surrounded the Giordano sisters, each one named for a flower and each one with a paranormal skill they use to fight local crimes. The Giordano sisters are only mentioned as peripheral characters, which is a shame because this main character isn't nearly so interesting.

Jessica isn't having a great freshman year. Somehow, a moving tattoo mysteriously appears on her arm-and she sees the same tattoo on some other shady girls around town. Jessica discovers that the tattoo is the mark of the Virrago, a mythical female warrior dedicated to fighting evil. Except the tattoo must have be wrong because Jessica is no warrior. She puts in half-hearted attempts to fight evil while flirting and generally doing inane selfish thinking. This is not a female character you can sink your teeth into.

I think that was my biggest problem with this book. Jessica just seems to trip through the pages , kind of like the whole thing is one big accident. An irritating girl and not very likable. The plot was also forgettable but does lay the steps for another in the series--an invitation that I will not be joining.

This seemed to be the second or third in this series and there were lots of thing I felt like I should know but didn't. I searched around for some others that preceded this one but couldn't clearly find any. The whole thing just confused me. Authors, please, when you start a new series, change the name.

OMG!! Marlene Perez changes the main character to Jessica, a freshman of Nightshade High. She is the sister of Sean, Daisy' brother friend's best friend, a complex relationship. I have to say I really miss Daisy and Ryan because I got really attached to them in the other books. However, Marlene Perez did not change her way of writing, the strange things happen in Nightshade attract me as always.
In Black Opal, Jessica meets Dominic Gray, a new singer for Side Effects May Vary. She crush on Dom, but he always hang out with Selena even he seems like Jessica. Their love doesn't like Daisy and Ryan's, there is a strange thing bother them. And Jessica learns she is a Virago, a woman warrior chosen to fight evil whenever it threatens her hometown. But the first injure she got was from her best friend Eva, Eva turned to a zombie because of the perfume she bought.
How can Jessica slove all these problems? I highly recommend you read this book, try the life in Nightshade.

I thought it was amazing but a little scary (not unusual for Marlene Perez). It was well written and I liked the romance. *SPOILER*, it suprised me a lot that the book is in the p.o.v. of Jessica, but when I think back to DEAD IS NOT AN OPTION, why else would the author have brought up the character Jessica in the first place? IN ALL... I would reccomend this book series to anyone who has not read it in an instant.

The main character in this one was okay, but I didn't love her. It was quite weird at first with the change.

Just like the other books in the series, It wasn't awful, but it wasn't one that I can say I really enjoyed either. This one dragged quite badly for me too unfortunately, so I was pretty glad when I finished it.

Overall, Not the best one in the series.

Green is what this book was, just like its cover.

I annotated while reading this book and the colors used were as follows:

PINK = Memorable quotes, reminiscent of the first five books.
GREEN = Seems sus (not a bad thing for a paranormal-themed book), CRINGE GALORE (VERY BAD, at least for the amount of green I had to use)
RED = Romance, made me smile, giddy feeling
PURPLE = Surprise, shock, WTF, shivers down my spine
ORANGE = Theory/Guess, My Thoughts, Plot, Important, Possible Plot

Honestly, as someone who loved and still loves Daisy Giordano's adventures in Nightshade, I gave this book a chance even though I was not 100% convinced that the change in the main character was a good decision. I have to say that I was not wrong, and while I finished it — I do not think it deserves more than 1 star which is a shame because the first five books were special in my opinion.

Let us begin with all this gooey green stuff. What makes this book so cringe is the fact that from the new generation, every character seems to be super cringe and just awful. I understand that they are high school students, BUT come on Daisy, Ryan, and Samantha (sorry Sean you are not that memorable) were immature at times but I do not think they ever gave me the feeling of cringe that Jessica, Andy, Dominic, and crew gave me with this book. Jessica gave the vibe that she thought she was too cool but at the same time, she was unsure of herself which was confusing. A big example of this was how she would be unsure about why someone while living in Nightshade would not think of something paranormal occurring, but at the same time, the boy she liked was acting weird while a WITCH was hanging around him and all she could come up with was that there must be a reason why he's acting that way but at no point did she think of the LITERAL WITCH before someone mentioned that his behavior changes when she's around! Another example of this is she would mention Daisy and Ryan's relationship (which started when they were freshmen in HS if I remember correctly) but then say something like "I was only a freshman, which was way too early to get serious with anybody." Within the same half-page, she proceeds to have the epiphany that Dom was into her and not Selena while being on a date with someone else, and doubting that Dom was into her. Make it make sense, please! That is another thing that irked me to no end about this book, which was how on-off these interactions between Dom and Jess were. I was hoping for the level of romance and chemistry that Daisy and Ryan had, and I got a hot pile of cringeworthy and rushed interactions.

Honestly, the best parts of the book were when the original "cast" was mentioned or featured. Reminders of Daisy Giordano and Ryan Mendez, and their love is what made me want to read this book and what forced me to make sure I finished it.

This is the sixth installment of Dead is series of Marlene Perez. The main character is Jessica Walsh, she is a high-school freshman and she has a mission to fight evil beasties in Nightshade. Jessica discovered that she is a "virago", a power woman warrior destined to fight paranormal baddies. She was attracted to Dominic, a hot new in a hot new band and really cute, while she is dating with Conor, who really seems to like her. Meanwhile, Eva, who is Jessica's best friend, joins to the group hanging around creepy Edgar and she is becoming more hostile toward Jessica, even she is trying to bite Jessica. Edgar turns girls into zombies and now Jessica has to figure out a cure to drive Edgar out of town.
Marlene Perez's plot in this book is to create a mysterious, scary space. And describing the path if the search for a way out to escape evil. By containing enough characters to sink a boat, this outing will be established the readers should be able to figure it out. Perez managed a light tone and some comedy. This is has a decided student feel, but it can also appeal to the older readers by breezing style and comic plot.
The author made a successful job to complete this book, she has created a story that appeals to the readers with intriguing details. She has promoted reading and thinking methods at the same time for readers by creating unexpected situations and waiting for readers to be able to use the brain to find solutions to those problems. I think by the above method, Perez is a great writer, has created an entertainment and learning space for the readers. Through the author, we can see that good always wins evil, and evil always has a tragic outcome.

Marlene Perez has a very specific writing style. Its light, funny but keeps you flipping the pages with characters that drive you insane and ones you find yourself caring for more than you thought you did.
Dead is a battle field is the first book in a companion series to the original dead is series.
Daisy and Ryan, unfortunately don't make much of an appearance other than some side characters but this story follows Jessica Walsh. Sean's(aka Ryan's best friend/ Sam's boyfriend) baby sister. And we get a bit more tome with Flo as well as a little twist on Daisy's special jukebox. We get a singing seer.

I honestly don't know why I keep reading these books. I came across book 1 while I was bored at work one day and I pretty much only read them via the kindle cloud reader when I have forgotten my other books. The books aren't bad but they also aren't good at this point? I at least felt slightly connected to Daisy but Jessica is the most boring Mary Sue. For some reason, despite the predictable plot lines and the oversimplified love stories and general lackluster of this series I keep reading them? I guess because they're short and easy to read

This is a cute YA paranormal story, but I have to admit that I didn't enjoy the new character, Jessica, as much as I enjoyed reading about Daisy, her sisters, and her friends from the earlier books.

The book carries the same type of paranormal mysteries for our young protagonist to solve, and she learns that she has a "mission" to keep Nightshade safe from all the evil paranormal stuff that enters Nightshade. She has several things that she needs to work through in this story, so all the elements that would make this interesting are there...but somehow Jessica's character did not grab me.

I do like this book and the introduction of new characters from Nightshade, but I'm not necessarily sure I enjoyed delving into completely new characters within the same series. It feels like when a season finale ends where you've grown to love the characters and want more. But then in a new season, it's a completely new cast within the same universe. I don't know, I do like the characters but still. Great read though!

This only took me a day since I couldn’t remember having read the last few books to this series before. Although, I will admit that I missed Ryan and Daisy even if they were mentioned a couple times. But I still enjoyed it, I loved Dominic and Jessica though, although there were a few people throughout the book that made me a bit mad at that character. But I love books that can make you feel upset or angry at a character, even if it is the main character or not.

I was a little sad that we said goodbye to Daisy. I was hoping her story would continue in this series, but I am glad we got glimpses of her here and there. I wanted so badly to love Jessica and her story, but I guess I was still waiting for "Dead is" to be Daisy Giordano's story until the end. Still, I did enjoy a new, fresh set of characters with their own group, quirks, and mysteries to solve.

honestly the first three of this series were pretty good. I marked those as four stars but the past couple ones just aren’t as good? I still like them but they aren’t giving me the same hype as the others. Maybe a book slump? I’m going to take a short break from this series cause maybe that’s what I need to get back into it.

Even though we got the same narrator, this book isn't about Daisy. I thought the whole series would center on her but this one has us follow another girl. It took some getting used to but I stuck it out since I listened to all the others. It's pretty damn good but as expected not as enjoyable as the previous books. Still good and will recommend it.

I had high hopes for this one. I’ve read most of the series and I enjoyed it. She changed the main characters of her series and I don’t like the new ones much. Jessica is bit full of her self and a pain in my opinion. The zombies storyline just didn’t sit with me. I’ll finish the series since I’ve read most of it but I really didn’t enjoy this one book as much as the others.
