The latest in the acclaimed Jake Hines detective series - Chief of Detectives Jake Hines has his work cut out. Somebodys stealing cash and charging merchandise to dozens of local credit card holders, in the same month when a purse-snatcher is assaulting women. One of Jakes team catches the mugger, but at the same time Jake is confronted with an identical-seeming crime elsewhere. Theres great confusion about cars, signatures, intentions identity becomes a slippery slope...
A one-time innkeeper with a taste for adventure, Elizabeth has been a private pilot, sky diver, SCUBA diver, and liveaboard sailor. Extensive travel in the US, Canada, Mexico and Europe led to a second career as a free-lance travel writer, during which she began writing a series of police procedural mysteries set in southeast Minnesota, where she grew up. Her books contrast the sometimes gritty routine of police work with the idyllic rural scenes around a mid-size city in the upper Midwest.
I have been savoring the Jake Hines police procedural for a long time. I was delighted to find one I haven't read before the seventh. Jake grew up in Minnesota foster care. He was found in a garbage can as a baby. He is of mixed heritage. Jake is now a Capitan in the Rutherford Police Department and its winter time. There are two problems that the police department needs to Solve. Someone is stealing credit cards and buying a large amount of goods. A bicycle villain is grabbing women's purses. The violence is escalating with each incident. Jake's sets up a string to catch the party. His wife, Trudy is about to deliver their first child. This part is very inspiring. Will Jake's strategy be rewarding with of a winter storm occurring? I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND SERIES.
It's a really fun read with just the right balance of humor in the mix . I'm really enjoying this series. This is the second in the series that I've read.
Book 7 in the Jake Hines mystery series. Jake is now captain of detectives overseeing the People Crimes and Property Crimes divisions. He still has trouble staying out of the action, especially when things have become so numerous and overwhelming for the whole department. Someone is snatching women's purses, but with escalating violence. There are also some other thefts and somebody is using stolen credit cards to make fraudulent purchases. Meanwhile, Jake's wife Trudy is momentarily expecting their first child. This happens during the book, and Jake, as a first-time father, is very nervous, especially as he has no family to fall back on and no father figure to learn from. Also his boss is planning a reunion of team members of the nine-member short-team football team he was part of. This is the sport mentioned in the title. I like this series, especially the characters. Aside from Jake and Trudy my favorite character is the part-time coroner Adrian Pokornoskovic, known as Pokey.
I found it hard to imagine that I'd missed a midwestern mystery setting, let alone a series six books along. In this book, Chief Jake Hines is trying to catch a purse snatcher who seems to be escalating in violence toward his victims, but also staying near the phone as his wife nears the end of her pregnancy with their first child.
The pregnancy depiction was really charming... Gunn writes about Hines' fear for his wife in a very compelling manner (too bad it wasn't written by a man ). The procedural, itself, is a bit plodding, though... it doesn't sparkle like the Sandford or Harstad books do. I will probably look into the others, though.
The latest (but the first I've read) in the Jake Hines mystery series set in southeastern Minnesota. This is a solid police procedural with good characters and a interesting plot. I got turned around a couple of times and very much enjoyed my introduction to Jake, his team and family. I'll be looking for the earlier books for sure.
I LOVE this series!!! Jake has gathered a great family together, and has several terrific teams working for him at the Rutherford Police Department. I like the way everyone works together, and how the mysteries develop.
