His 56 novels include 45 westerns and western historicals. The Unwritten Order (1995) was nominated for a Spur Award from the Western Writers of America. He began his career at age 19 as a journalist in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Excellent book! Very exciting read it definitely keeps you on your toes! I love the book because there were times when he would throw in just the right amount of humor! After watching the series Deadwood it was so fun reading about the characters that you knew from the series. I would recommend Ralph Compton books to anyone who enjoys a book that has a lot of historical facts about the times back in the west!

Slowest most boring western story I have ever read. Not even close to historically correct either. Example. One of the gals in the book was talking about reading the Women's Home Journal. It didn't come out until 1883. At the end of the story it's 1878.

First western- enjoy it and very different.
