Book 37 of the TIme-Life World War II series. Profusely illustrated text recounts the events leading to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the capitulation of Japan in W.W. II.
This volume details the Manhattan project and the dropping of atomic bombs on Japan which let to its surrender in August 1945. Chapter 4 is a detailed description of the survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, a harrowing account.
Genuinely thrilling account of the final days of WWII, including an incredibly detailed insider account of the Manhattan Project, as well as an insider's look at the Japanese "Big Six" and the political battles in the Emperor's palace. Incredible stuff, and the best entry so far in a tremendous series.
I used this book for research for my history essay. I expected to be reading a boring bunch of facts regarding the atomic bomb, but the book provided much for information than that. I was actually intrigued by the series of events that led to the decision to use the atomic bomb. It felt to me like an interesting story, only it was real and actually happened. I enjoyed the "picture essays" throughout as well.
Very well written, fluent, easy to read and full of more information than you could expect. If you are looking to learn more about the fall of the Japanese empire, as well as the atomic bomb, this book is it.
Bought this Life Time series in the early 1980's on WWII, a volume came to the house every 2 or 3 months so I could take my reading. It was very informative and enjoyable read, I still use it for reference.
Excellent book. Includes the definitive account of the Manhattan project and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However, the Soviet invasion of Manchuria does not get the detail it deserves.
