Zeyan has been banished by her own race and her talents have developed under the careful eye of the instructors at the Citadel. When a psychic plague breaks out that shatters the mind body connection, the locals call the Sector Guard and they, in turn, call the Soul Keeper. It is time for her to return home.

Orenn has envied his cousin Fenn’s life and love in the Sector Guard. As a telepath at the Citadel he recognizes a powerful will when he sees it and when Zeyan looks into his eyes, he also sees his future stretching before him, with her at his side.

He had no idea it was going to be the other way around.

Viola Grace – Tales of the Citadel - Sector Guard Spinoff

This author is prolific. Really, REALLY prolific - and that's a good thing because I enjoy her stuff. Note: these are short story/short novella sized works that share a common universe - a universe where 2000 Terrans were allowed to go out to the stars and establish that the Terrans could live, love, and adapt to the wider world...

The series theme is the Citadels, places of learning where gifted individuals can be protected and trained to handle their powers – rather than being handled by them. Their motto seems to be ‘Be the Best You Can Be’. Most Citadels share a world with a Sector Guard base and the Citadel frequently subcontract their members to serve with the Sector Guard. Although you’d think they’d notice that they seldom get them back… Many of the stories contain Terrans, or those with some Terran in their ancestry, but not all.

I rate her stories pretty consistently as either 4s or 5s. Frequently there is sex - alien sex of course - and some very weird aliens they are but all seem to accomplish the 'insert tab A into slot B' thing to the delight of all concerned.

Below is the copy and paste from the author's web – I suggest reading the Sector Guard stories first but it is not absolutely necessary. Order is not hugely important although the characters do tend to reappear now and then.

A great start to a wonderful Science Fiction Romance Series made up short stories that explore all kinds of aliens, cultures, and love.

I have been reading out of order and it has been good times for me. However, I think that reading in order would likely be more pleasurable if you don't have a fierce memory.

The heroine is wonderful as is the hero and the world building. Enjoy!

Okay, Viola Grace has apparently written FIVE HUNDRED MILLION BOOKS. This is not the first book in the series (read the sector guards series first and there's books before that too) and... there's quite a bit going on.

Impressions of the book:

Simple

Quick Read

Decent

Typos!!!

Shallow

I've seen her name around and I'm glad I finally read something by her, but there are better books in existence. I'll start at the beginning when I need to read something mindless. Also I would have liked to read something from the love interest's point of view.

Wooden

The over arching plot was good, but the writing felt rushed and wooden. I feel like I just read a report on a longer more interesting story instead of the story itself. There is both room and potential for improvement so I wish Viola Grace good luck.

Interesting short story

Not many could survive losing everything. Now a new world, New people and dying. How do you survive? Food for thought.

Viola Grace has, once again, created a world filled with adventure, passion and unique races. I was worried that I would miss her Sector Guard folks, but the Tales of the Citadel will continue to bring the teams in, but now the Guard is simply back up to the psychics and healers who help the Guard do their jobs so admirably. I like this new angle, and the new characters Ms. Grace continues to introduce.

Banished from her home planet simply because of her psychic talent, Zeyan finds a home at The Citadel, helping those in need of her unique kind of comfort. She likes her life there, even if it is a bit isolated and lonely.

Orenn has watched Zeyan as she has matured into her talent, and is determined to win her heart and have her by his side in a shared future. Little does he know, things rarely go as planned, even for those at The Citadel. When the separation from her home planet endangers Zeyan’s very life, an anchor must be found to restore her equilibrium, and Orenn becomes that anchor for her. And when a distress call comes from Heschell for a problem only Zeyan can remedy, can she forget the past and help those who sent her away, or wanted her dead because of her talent?

Zeyan is a strong and very independent woman, determined to use her talent to the best of her abilities. When it becomes clear that she can’t do that on her home world, she accept the challenge of joining The Citadel, and I like that she is open to all the new possibilities before her. She has strength of character, and a willingness to accept what comes her way without bitterness or regret.

Orenn is strong, handsome and intrigued by Zeyan. As a psychic and telepath, he feels a connection to Zeyan, and would like nothing more than to have her by his side always. He is loyal, caring, and when it becomes necessary for Zeyan to have an anchor to save her life, Orenn does not hesitate. I like his ability to accept her as she is, and support her when it becomes apparent that, at times, she will be the dominant talent needed for a particular case.

There are some big surprises in this, especially with the return to Heschell to treat the plague victims. When the Sector Guard and the Citadel members encounter the danger and treachery of an untrained and vindictive talent, things could go two ways, and it takes the skills of everyone to set things right.

I would recommend Soul Keeper to all who like long, slow courtships, with a touch of danger and adventure, and new worlds to conquer all in one package.

A different take on being "grounded". We have our families, friends, etc. But what anchors us when that is taken away? Not just a sci-fi adventure, but a tale of loss and finding your place.

Travel between worlds, being outcast, finding a new home/anchor, finding peace with one's self, selflessness, love, friendship, kinship.

Interesting plot and concept.

Unfortunately, I quite disliked the flat writing style. It was a clinically written external narrative, with no motivations, thoughts, or internal struggles mentioned whatsoever. It is exceedingly difficult to sympathize or develop any interest in the characters as a consequence.

Not being a fan of Sci-Fi, but being a fan of Viola Grace's made this an easy jump for me. I can see that this world will hold my attention for a very long time to come.

The characters are swift to build, and you tense in expectation to see what comes next.

This book has great potential but was way too short. If this had been used as a skeleton and flesh had been built up around everything, it could be an amazing story. As it was, it was an enjoyable read but only took about an hour to finish.

Short but surprisingly entertaining little story. Low on the sex which was actually a major plus for me especially with a story this short.
