I am Sacagawea explores the life of the young woman who was instrumental in the Lewis and Clark expedition. It is set in the 1800's and provides insight into the missions taken on by Sacagawea and the other voyagers. She is seen as the only woman in a group of men who must travel far distances, and create new routes. Her drive, determination and persistence is constantly explained as she also provides the group with a sense of safety and stability as she makes certain the food they're eating and the paths they take are safe. However, her journey is not always ideal. She is faced with many dangerous situations. At one point, Sacagawea almost faces death. She eventually receives help and was able to carry out her job. Her heroism is noted at the end with regards to Sacagawea and her group. The text notes, "They mapped the land, found a route, noted the vegetation and geology, and made contact with the Indians. And they never could have done it without Sacagawea, whom Clark said, "'has been of great service to me as a pilot through this country"' (103). This text is an empowering and inspirational tale of a young woman who was strong, resilient, and adventurous.

Extremely quick read with pictures, map, timeline, glossary, info pages, & mini-bios on the main cast of characters - an informative, yet simple telling of Sacagawea's life.
It's a great series of books with loads of historical infomation yet some lesser known facts. They hold a reader's attention and may lead to further research and interest.
I am not one to read non fiction. It's almost always too brutal for me.
This book was aimed at 6th graders so it wasn't too gruesome. I am sure there are a lot of awful truths to Sacagawea's story.
I learned ( or relearned) a lot from this book. I don't remember knowing that Sacagawea's cowardly white husband went along on the journey. I do sort of remember that she had just given birth and was carrying along her newborn.
This entire trip seemed unlikely. These people must have been very motivated. I really thought it was great when Sacagawea made sure that she got to see the ocean.
The artwork in this book is really amazing. It really brought the story to life.
This is a quick read biography on Sacagawea. She was put in a very difficult situation early on but always seemed rise to the occasion. From her kidnapping early on and "forced" marriage to a hot tempered Charbonneau, the book simply displays a very strong, mature young lady making the most out of her situation. She becomes a valuable and irreplaceable asset to Lewis and Clark. She is respected and looked to for guidance from the men on the expedition. Without it being said, it is quite obvious that Charbonneau was not nearly as valuable or brave as his young bride. Enjoyed it!
1. Title: I Am Sacagawea 2. Rating: 4 stars 3. Review: The book brings a detailed, complex historical tale down to a beginning-reading level which is easy to understand. The book includes maps of the journey, while using illustrations to show the journey. My only critique is that the book tells its tale from a very westernized perspective, which it may have been nice to hear it from an alternative perspective.
At first when I picked this book up I thought it was going to be something completely different. I did however really enjoy this book once I started to understand what it was about. I feel as though students will like to learn a little more about Sacagawea and what everyone who was with him went through. I loved that this book was simple (after realizing what it was about), yet very informational. If I teach upper elementary I will indeed add this to my library.
When I first picked this book out I was expecting it to be different than it turned out to be. Upon realizing the true meaning of the book I think that it is very beneficial. The author described what happened to Sacagawea and everyone that was with him as well as everything that they had to go through. This book would make a great addition to an upper elementary classroom library. The students would find it interesting to learn about.
This is a Scholastic book written for children. It explains in a simple way, the life of Sacagawea. It relates a bit about her childhood. It describes how valuable her service was to the Lewis and Clark Expedition of Discovery. She was barely 17 years old and a brand new mother when the trek started, yet she had a lot of wisdom and courage that helped the others a great deal.
i love sacagawea she is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooocool
Children's literature, grade 5 reading level, grade 4-8 interest level. Interesting, but simple, biography of Sacagawea, the native American woman who helped Lewis & Clark establish a route from the US Midwest to the Pacific Ocean, covering 4,000 miles, from May 14, 1804 – September 23, 1806.
wrote my first book report on Sacagawea as a 4th grader (if I remember correctly). I grew up in the Black Hills of SD and she was known to have been there. Amazing life.
I really liked it cause it explained it a lot better than other books did. It had more detail than others do. They told more about her life and what she did and it described it so good. They explained how things happened to her . They didn't know a fact so they told about it and how much they knew about as best as they could. They made the book easier to understand without the book being to easy. They made it sound super cool to make you want to read on and on without stopping.
I read an ARC for this book, so there were almost no pictures or illustrations, which should add a lot to the finished copy. Overall it was a good book for younger readers wanting to learn more about Sacagawea, but the book may have been a little too concise. It served its purpose of being a non-fiction book, but it wasn't a very entertaining or compelling one.
I am not that crazy about history books, but thisbook was short enough that it kept my intereset. The illustrations are pretty good, too. I also like the 10 facts in the back of the book. There is also a glossary, a bibliography, and a list of places to visit to find out more information. There is even an index which could be helpful if using this book for research.
This book taught me how hard it was for Sacagawea. It takes a lot of courage to complete the expedition. I thought the book was awesome! (Written by ABB, age 9)
This book was really interesting because I am part Indian. In this book I found that she was a guide for Lewis and Clark at the age of 16. She did some courageous acts as she fought for her life and her son's.
