Fire Series #2

Hidden Fire

Rate this book
A Red Hot Weekend story.

Well, this is an unexpected twist. Jenna Brooks is all set to spend the weekend wallowing in misery, repairing the cracks in the façade she’s maintained for twelve years. Instead she’s…tied to a chair. Kidnapped by her own twin brother and her so-called best friend.

It’s for her own good, they say. She’ll thank them later, they say. But when they reveal her partner in captivity, she shores up her emotional barriers. It’s Garreth Halt. The one man for whom she let her guard down. What a fool she was.

For one electrifying moment, Garreth had Jenna naked in his arms, on the edge of losing her legendary control. Could have kept her there forever, too, if he hadn’t felt honor-bound to tell her the truth. Before she’d heard the whole truth, though, she’d retreated behind the fortress around her heart.

Now they’re knee to knee, with no escape. While he’s irritated he let his alleged best friend get the drop on him, a small part of him is thrilled. With one final chance to show her his love is real, Garreth methodically, wickedly, sets out to dismantle her defenses.

One dirty word at a time.

'Hidden Fire' definitely had some appeal, but personally I just couldn't buy a few things:

- 'The pact' - Frankly, it all sounded so childish and immature. I can see children and even teens doing that sort of thing, for a time, mind you, but adult siblings living their lives hindered by some silly promise not to date each other's friends is just dumb.

- remote, closed off Jenna suddenly running into Gareth's arms simply because her brother broke the pact.

- Garreth screwing Jenna's best friend aka the woman Jenna's brother, Jackson, loves, in order to break the pact - I mean, what the hell kind of logic was that? He said he jumped Rachel's bones, because he knew Jackson loved her and Jenna would only come to him if Jackson broke the pact first. Jenna was actually grateful for that. Seriously? If it was me, I would be twice pissed. Once for me and once for my brother. You do not mess with best friends or siblings' significant others, especially when they're one and the same.

- Garreth and Jackson's little sexcapades - Apparently those two, despite being desperately in love with two women, went on having threesomes at leisure. Does that make sense?

The day that Jenna Brooks and her twin brother Jackson turns 30 is the day that Jenna finds out that her brother wants to break the pact that had protected both of them, especially Jenna for the past 12 years. At 17, the vicious lies spread by an ex-girlfriend of Jackson who had been one of Jenna’s closest friends had affected Jenna more so than Jackson. The news that Jackson wants out leaves Jenna with a sense of freedom and exhilaration she barely allows herself to acknowledge before she is making her way towards the one man who has invaded the calm facade behind which Jenna has hidden to protect herself for the past 12 years of her life.

Garreth Halt has given up hope that Jenna would ever embrace the fiery connection that has been between them since day one of their encounter 2 years back. Resigned to heading back home in a couple of days Garreth doesn’t expect the warm bundle of woman who hurtles herself into his arms and demands that he take possession of everything she has to give and more. But the secret that Garreth hides is one that drives Jenna away, allowing her to once again put up the shields of steel around her heart and emotions, all but reeling from the news that Garreth imparts during the one time Jenna had opened herself up to him.

Intervention comes in the form of Jackson and his girlfriend, which forces both Jenna and Garreth into each other’s company, to lay their emotions bare and to confront the love that they have for each other. The passion that has always simmered between the two of them bursts forth in waves, the scorching scenes of over the charts hot sex as always so very well done by an author whose erotic contemporary stories I have come to adore.

Hidden Fire, though it reads as a standalone, in my opinion should be read after Winter Fire which first introduces the characters that we come across in this novella. Maybe because I didn’t read Winter Fire before, I found myself in total disbelief at how Garreth justifies his reasons for having done what he did; to remove the obstacle that was preventing Jenna from acknowledging her feelings towards him. The one thing that did redeem Garreth was the fact that he had always been there for Jenna when she had needed it, no questions asked. Even with Garreth’s character turning out the way he did for me, the style and wit with which Jess presents a story is one never to be missed and that’s why I would recommend both the books in Fire series to fans of contemporary erotic romance lovers and fans of Jess Dee!

Jenna and Garreth have been in love with each other for two years, but never acted on it due to a promise that Jenna and her twin brother had. After horrible lies were told about the twins when they were high school by Jenna’s then best friend, Jenna and Jackson made a vow to never date each others friends. For years they held to this until Jackson fell for Rachel, Jenna’s best friend, while Jenna fell for Garreth, who is friends with Jackson.

The first novella in the series, Winter Fire, was Jackson refusing to be with Rachel to honor the promise. Garreth is there, sees what’s happening and what Rachel and Jackson are trying to avoid, and he, uh…puts himself in the middle. He sleeps with Rachel, Jackson sees red and finally stops hiding his feelings for Rachel. We’re left with a very happy couple in Jackson and Rachel, but then there’s Garreth, who’s completely in love with Jenna and is tired of not having a chance with her.

Hidden Fire opens with Jenna and Jackson talking about their promise to not date each other friends and Jackson coming clean about being with Rachel. With the promise forgotten, Jenna runs to Garreth only to have reality slammed in her face when she learns that he slept with her best friend that same weekend. I’m not really into a guy sleeping with the friend of the woman he loves the same weekend he’s finally declaring his love for said woman. For as much as I enjoyed Winter Fire, I had to put that storyline aside and just concentrate on Garreth and Jenna and their time together.

Before he could step out of the doorway, something barreled into him, crashing into his chest, slamming the breath form his body, winding him.

That something threw her arms around his shoulders, grabbed his neck and held tight. So tight she crushed his chest. Stopped his heart. Prevented his blood from flowing through his brain. He couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think.

But then that’s how he reacted every time Jenna Brooks came near.

Jenna has some issues in her past that have caused her to put up emotional walls and Garreth just starts breaking them down. She’s been afraid to be her real self and she can’t be anything but real with Garreth. He forces it out of her and they spend a highly emotional, very sexy night together that was two years in the making. I ended up not caring much for the plot outside the bedroom, frankly the ease with which Jenna was able to accept that Garreth slept with her friend Rachel was really out there and I didn’t believe it, but the part of the story that kept my attention was when it was all about Garreth and Jenna and two years of attraction and love that they’re finally able to experience.

While this novella can be read as a stand-alone, I would recommend getting both Winter Fire & Hidden Fire and reading them together. The bulk of both stories take place over about a week’s time and they would read well back-to-back. There’s only so much that can be packed into a novella, and this one falls very heavily on the sex between Jenna and Garreth and doesn’t go deep into their relationship outside what we’re told – they’ve been in love for years. When I picked up this novella I was looking for a quick, sexy read and got it, but the story outside the bedroom falls a little short.

Oh my god, I am so sorry, but this has to be one of the stupidest books I have ever read. I returned and honestly don’t feel bad about it at all.
I slept with your best friend because I love you and I care so much about your brother and this was the only way for him to realize how much he loves her and go be with her! WHAT???????????????? I have no words for the stupidity of that story, seriously.

Had trouble with this one. There is something just so squicky about a guy claiming to love you, and still sleeping with your twin brother and your best (female) friend. Garreth may have had the best of intentions, but he could have accomplished all that without actually having a threesome with Jackson and Rachel.

And I also have a problem with a man claiming to love a woman with his entire being and a) still horndog-ing it all over town, and b) having threesomes with her twin brother. That whole "If I couldn't have you I had to sex other people" screams of victim blaming. Both couples' stories left a bad taste in my mouth.

Also, YOU NEVER GO ASS TO MOUTH. Some of that was so unhygienic it made me feel ill.

Not Dee's best.

Sometimes, being tied down is the quickest way to become free.

When Jenna is kidnapped by her brother and her best friend, and tied blindfolded to a chair, she is furious at first. When she realizes she isn’t alone, she feels a bit better, until she learns just who is tied to the other chair.

Jenna starts to build her walls back around her heart. Garreth has waited too long for Jenna’s love to give up now. He's determined to make her understand what he's done for her, so they can overcome the past and have a life together. Can Jenna see beyond his actions in the past to the desire behind it? Garreth must convince Jenna of his love for her alone? Can seduction work, when both participants are so close, yet still so far apart?

Hidden Fire is Jess Dee’s follow up to last year’s hot and fantastic Winter Fire. The world building is terrific. Ms Dee’s characters likeable and fun to read about. In this one, the heat level has been raised, and the passion seemed to leap off the page. I enjoyed how the characters from Winter Fire weren’t satisfied with just having their happy ever after, but were determined to help Jenna and Garreth find theirs as well.

Jenna Brooks has been hurt in the past. She's smart and independent, but she has unrealistic standards for those around her. When her brother tells her he’s in love with her best friend, Jenna realizes she's now free to be with the one man she has loved for years. I liked watching Jenna as she was finally able to come to terms with the past and learn to take what she wants from life. And what she really wants is Garreth.

Garreth is everything a woman could want: handsome, sexy and dedicated to one woman with all his heart. I loved watching Garreth seduce Jenna with just words at first, as both were tied to chairs. His determination to win her, one word at a time was so hot, and as he slowly got beneath her defenses, the story heated up quite nicely.

Jess Dee has written a hot and delicious love story, with one very stubborn woman who is afraid to feel, and the man who loves her enough to do anything to win her love. There are no secondary characters though most of this book, just Garreth and Jenna and the electricity between them becomes a tangible presence as Garreth reveals his heart to her. I was brought to tears by the passion Garreth offered to Jenna, and enjoyed watching as he breached her defenses and offered her his love. This is one for those who love second chances at love, and new beginnings with lots of scorching heat.

Jess Dee writes some of the best friends to lovers stories I’ve read! Her stories have so much emotion packed into them it’s unbelievable. Unbelievable because the ones I’ve read have been short stories. It takes some mad skills to put so much emotion into such a short story and still keep the story hot!

Hidden Fire actually starts in the Winter Fire book. You really need to read that book before you read this one. You’ll be a bit lost if you don’t. It will also create a stronger emotional attachment to the characters if you read that one first!

Garreth is an awesome guy. He did an underhanded thing in Winter Fire, but he did it for the right reason. Now he’s dealing with the aftermath of that act.

Jenna is afraid to let others in, and to some degree I agree with her. I think she should have gotten therapy long before now, but she didn’t and now she’s dealing with the repercussions! Garreth is just the man to help her. If only, she’ll stop running long enough to let him.

Enter Rachel, her best friend and Jackson, her twin brother. They kidnap Garreth and Jenna to force them to talk to each other. And boy does Garreth talk. He dirty talks his way into Jenna’s walls and makes her so hot and wet, she’ll do anything to get him to scratch that itch!

While I really liked this story and I love Garreth, Jenna tended to get on my nerves. Granted I’ve never gone through anything like she has, but she still got on my nerves. She’s pretty selfish and it comes through in this story. Luckily she has Garreth to help her lose some of the selfishness.

I’m looking forward to more Jess Dee stories. She has quite a few I’m planning on checking out!

I liked this and then I didn't. It was hot and then it annoyed me. I was a bit conflicted and the main reason why was because I felt that this story felt forced. It was forced.

Jenna and her brother Jackson had made a pact not to date each other friends after a bad incident happened with an ex friend that turned crazy. In a previous book Jackson fell in love with Jennas' friend Rachel and couldn't abide by that pact anymore. Now Jenna is faced with the possibility that the secret crush of her life (her brother's friend Garreth) is leaving town for good. But she still doesn't want to cross that line because of the pact.

And that may be something she can overcome but the fact that she finds out that Garreth was the third in a threesome with her brother and Rachel while they were getting together, well she doesn't know how she can deal with that.

But Jackson and Rachel know how. They kidnap both Jenna and Garreth and leave them both in a house to face their feelings for each other once and for all.

Of course sparks fly, and they are pretty hot mind you and by the end of their time together in "captivity" they know they be apart. That didn't work for me.

I did like the writing and will be checking out other Jess Dee's books, as well as going back and reading Rachel and Jackson's story, but I feel this story would've maybe worked better as a full novel where there was more time to work on their issues instead of going from "friends" that had never even kissed to I can't live without yous, with everything in between.

This is book #2 in the Fire series and it picks up just a few weeks after the last one ends. Rachel and Jackson are a couple but Garret has lost any chance he may have had with Jenna...or so he thought. Rachel being the ever-so-wonderful friend doesn't want to see her best friend give up on an amazing guy just because he...(well, I can't tell you what he did-you have to read it) let's just say he stepped over a line to help a friend.

Both Rachel and Jackson know what they have to do so the kidnap both Garreth and Jenna and tie then in a room together until they can work things out... one way or another. Things can get very heated when in a locked room, especially when you have a devious guy like Garreth around. Garreth knows how he feels and is tired of hiding it but he knows that nothing can come of this unless Jenna is willing to take a leap of faith for him.

Both characters have such great chemistry; they fight, they love, and they fight so more...to say they have a firey relationship is putting it lightly. This series was properly named for sure "Fire" 'cause the minute you start reading you are fired either from the heated fights or the smoking hot words and actions. Jess Dee has hooked me again with another series, I can't wait for more.

Guilty Pleasures Recommended Read

Both Jenna and Garreth are “kidnapped” and forced to talk out their difference. I loved reading Garreth with all his dirty words to Jenna trying to break down her wall and let him in. He knew he had to push her beyond her breaking point and when he does things go from HOT to SCORCHING ! Garreth and Jenna have great chemistry and their story is so wonderfully written. Their story is like reading a story about friends. They love each, they can not stand what the other is doing and then the realization that if they just work together and be honest they can make it through anything. The inter struggle for Jenna is hard and there were times I felt bad for her and just wanted to hug her and tell her everything would be alright. To be tormented so badly at young age is horrible. I loved watching her come out of her shell and know it was alright for her to be who she wanted to be.

This is wonderfully HOT story about two people over coming a lot obstacles. This is another great story by Jess Dee. Oh, and I love the water gun….you will see.

This was a great follow-up to Winter Fire. I'm not sure I could have forgiven Garreth so easily, and honestly, she didn't forgive him easily! It's one thing to have girlfriends because of course Jenna wasn't giving him a shot due to the pact with her brother, but it's another thing entirely for him to fuck her best friend. With her brother. That's a little squicky, lol.

But how Rachel and Jackson got Garreth and Jenna over their little hump of misery was brilliant. First, Jackson "attacked" Garreth and got him tied to a chair in his room. Meanwhile, Rachel kidnapped Jenna, brought her to Garreth's room, and tied her to a chair as well. And they had it out. Now that Jenna was a captive audience, Garreth could tell her everything without fear of her running out on him. And then he started telling her how he wanted to worship her body. Wow... good dirty talk! And then he got free and made good on some of his promises. Sexy!

I was glad with how it worked out. Still a little freaky that Jenna's love was in a threesome with her brother and best friend, but whatever. :-) Good story.

OMG I'm so tied up in knots.

It's really well written and I've gone through the story in no-time.
As usual sex scenes are HOT, but that's Jess for you.
But the plot... it got me thinking: what would I do in her place ?
And I don't know if it makes me normal or prude.
I think I could probably get over Garret sleeping with my best friend if I've really loved him.
I could get over him having threesomes with my brother and random girls.
though no effin way I could just look past 3somes with her and my brother (though that wont happen to me since I dont have one).

It's really hard to decide on stars here.
I would gave 5 for this but I can't get over the plot. So I'm going with 3 - because it was a good read and maybe someone more open-minded than me can enjoy and relate.

Can I just say I loved the 2nd book even more than the first in the series. Jenna and Garreth are dee-liciously hot together, but their getting past Jenna's fears and doubts to get to that point make you love the characters and the chemistry between the two. I highly recommend another winner from Jess :)

This is the second part of the Fire series. I really enjoyed this novella and am glad I read this straight after Winter Fire.

Despite the fab interaction between the H&H and sexy scenes there is a ton of emotion.

4 stars because I really like Garreth.

But I don't like Jenna.

I didn't like her in the first book (even though she was hardly in it) and I just couldn't get on board with her in this one.

But I love Garreth, Jax, and Rachel.
