Another GREAT collection of poems from John Wieners, who is slowly becoming my favorite modern poet.
Some of the poems in this book are dense and slightly hard to make sense of (many of them made more sense when I read them the second or third time) but definitely worth the work and effort.
I really like some of his short poems too - they are condensed like a haiku, filled with sharp observations on the fleeting moment. Some of these poems are quite heart-breaking too and through the language that he uses, you can feel or sense the anguish and pain that love and lost love has caused him in his life.
This probably deserves 5 stars but there were a few poems I couldn't quite get my head around, which may or may not be a bad thing. I still can't decide. Should all poems be understandable to the reader? Or is the 'aura' of the poem and its effect on the reader more important?
This one was almost as good as Ace of Pentacles, and I am yet to read a book of poor quality from this man. He is extremely consistent as a poet. I think I am going to read (the first) Selected Poems of John Wieners next. There are at least two other Selected Poems for this same poet, the most famous one being the second one published by John Martin's legendary Black Sparrow Press.
