About the author

Punathil Kunjabdulla (3 April 1940 – 27 October 2017) was an Indian writer from Kerala. A medical doctor by profession, Kunjabdulla was a practitioner of the avant-garde in Malayalam literature. His work includes more than 45 books, including 7 novels, 15 short story collections, memoirs, an autobiography and travelogues. His work Smarakasilakal (Memorial Stones) won the Central and State Akademi Awards.

This is a period where celebrities and authors write biographies to boost their self-image. Some of them are even written by ghostwriters. They are written for milking the maximum money out of the controversies they made. It is in this scenario that books like Nashtajathakam become so relevant.

Punathil was an author who had immense power and control over the words he wrote in his book. He could have altered it any way he wanted and could have easily manipulated the reader's mind. Instead, he decided to go through the realistic and raw path. In my opinion, this is how you should write a biography.

The fearless and unfiltered manner in which he wrote this book is really praiseworthy. His early life, life in Med school, and his professional life are all well conveyed in this book. This is a must-read book if you are a Doctor or if you love Malayalam literature, or if you simply want to read an honest biography.

അങ്ങനെ വലിയ പ്രചോദനമോ, ഗഹനമായ ജീവിതാനുഭങ്ങളോ അവകാശപ്പെടാനിലാത്ത ഒരു ആത്മകഥ. തന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലെ ചില അനുഭവങ്ങൾ ഒരു episodic രീതിയിൽ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ.

പന്ത്രണ്ടാമത്ത വയസിൽ കല്യാണവും, ബീഡി ഇഷ്ടപെടുന്ന ഭാര്യയും, ഒരു നേരം കഴിക്കാൻ സധ്യകൾ ഉള്ള സ്ഥലത്തെത്തുന്ന ഭാര്യപിതാവ് ദാവൂദും, അദ്ദേഹം സിംഗപ്പൂരിൽ പോയ് പൈസ ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ കഥയും, മാച്ചനാരിക്കുന്നിലെ തറവാടും, ചേട്ടന്റെ അസുഖവും, ജോലിക്കാരി മറിയം തന്നെ കുളിപ്പിച്ച ഓർമകളും.

കാരക്കാട് സ്റ്റേഷന്റെ അടുത്തുള്ള സ്കൂളും, കടലിന്റെ അടുത്തുള്ള ഹൈ സ്‌കൂളും, അലിഗഡിൽ പോയതും, മുത്തശ്ശന് വേറെ ബന്ധമുണ്ടെന്ന് അറിഞ്ഞു വീട് വിട്ടു ഇറങ്ങി പോയി, കാട്ടിലെ മൃഗങ്ങൾ കടിച്ചു പറിച്ചു കൊന്നു കളഞ്ഞ തന്റെ മുത്തശ്ശിയും, സ്നേഹം തരാത്ത അമ്മയും, രംഗൂണിൽ നിന്ന് പാഴ്സലും മണി ഓർഡർ അയക്കുന്ന മുത്തശ്ശനും.

പണ്ഡിറ്റ് നെഹ്‌റുവിനെ കണ്ടതും, അലിഗഡിലെ പ്രസംഗം കേട്ടതും. മരുന്ന് എന്ന തന്റെ നോവലിന്റെ തർജ്ജമമായ ദവയുടെ ഷൂട്ടിങ്ങിൽ പോയതും, അവിടെ ചാരുഹാസനുമായി കമ്പനി അടിച്ചതും, കള്ള് കുടിച്ചതും. ഹോസ്റ്റലിലെ റാഗ്ഗിൻങ്ങും ജീവിതവും, മുകുന്ദനെ ദില്ലിയിൽ കണ്ടതും, പരിചയക്കാരായതും, കഞ്ചാവടിച്ചതും, കേരള ക്ലബ്ബിൽ വെച്ച് കാക്കനാടൻ, MT, വിജയനെ പരിചയപ്പെടുന്നതും, അടുത്തുള്ള ഹോസ്റ്റലിൽ താമസിച്ച നസ്രുദീൻ ഷായും, പെണ്ണുങ്ങൾ ഇല്ലാ ഹോസ്റ്റലിൽ സമയം ചെലവഴിക്കുന്നതും. മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജ് അനുഭവങ്ങൾ, ആദ്യ പ്രാക്ടീസ് അനുഭവങ്ങൾ, പൊറ്റെക്കാട്ടും ദുബായിൽ ചെന്നതും, ഗൾഫിൽ ആശുപത്രി നോക്കി നടത്തിയ അനുഭവങ്ങളും.

തന്റെ എഴുത്തുകളെ കുറിച്ചും, അവ ഉണ്ടായ സാഹചര്യത്തെ കുറിച്ചൊന്നും എഴുത്തുകാരൻ അതികം പരാമർശിക്കുന്നില്ല. തനിക്കു പിന്നീട് റെഫർ ചെയ്യാനുള്ള നോട്ട് പോലത്തെ ഒരു രീതിയാണ് ആത്മകതയിൽ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ പിന്തുടർന്നിട്ടുള്ളത്.

This is Puntahil Kunjabdullah's autobiography, alright. But it does not follow any of the conventions of this genre. It is not chronological. The first chapter is about his marriage and last chapter is about a an affair he had with a patient. It is as if Kunjabdullah wrote down various interesting episodes of his life, but while putting them together the incidents got jumbled up hopelessly.
Kunjabdullah's recollections of his childhood is pure magic realism that can upto Marquez. But the best parts are his recollections of his years as a medical student in AMU.
There is an undercurrent of sex through out the book. Kunjabdullah is unabashed about narrating his various escapades. Parts of the book reminded me of Khushwant Singh's autobiography, which is equally candid.
This book is idiosyncratic but very engaging.

ഒരു പച്ചയായ മനുഷ്യന്റെ തുറന്ന പുസ്തകം പോലെയുള്ള ജീവിതം...കുട്ടികാലത്തുള്ള ഉമ്മയുടെ വേർപാട് മുതൽ സ്വന്തം നാട് വിട്ട് aligarh യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയിലേക്ക് വൈദ്യപഠനത്തിന് പോകുന്ന കുഞ്ഞബ്ദുള്ളയുടെ ആദ്യകാലം തന്റെ വ്യക്തിത്വത്തിൽ ചെലുത്തിയ സ്വാധീനം എത്രമാത്രം ആണെന് പുസ്തകത്തിൽ വിവരിക്കുന്നു പലരും മനസ്സിൽ രഹസ്യമായി സൂക്ഷിക്കുന്നു പല ആഗ്രഹങ്ങളെയും സ്വന്തം ജീവിതത്തിൽ പ്രാവർത്തികമാക്കുകയും അതെല്ലാം ഒരു കൊച്ചു കുട്ടിയുടെ നിഷ്കളങ്കതയോടെ വിവരിക്കുന്ന പുനത്തിലിനെ നമ്മുക്ക് ഇവിടെ കാണാൻ കഴിയും

ഒരിടത്ത് കൂടി വെള്ളപൂശാൻ ശ്രമിക്കാതെ ചാപല്യങ്ങളും തെറ്റുകളും തുറന്നെഴുതിയ ഒരു ആത്മകഥയാണിത്. മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിൽ പഠിക്കാൻ എത്തുകയും അവിടുത്തെ റാഗിങ്ങും സൗഹൃദവും പഠന സംബന്ധമായ കാര്യങ്ങളും പങ്കുവയ്ക്കുകയും അതോടൊപ്പം തന്നെ എഴുതും ചാപല്യങ്ങളും പറയുന്നു. ആത്മകഥ അപൂർവ്വമായതുപോലെ തോന്നുന്നു.
