മാന്ത്രികപ്പൂച്ച [Manthrikappoocha]

വൈക്കം മുഹമ്മദ് ബഷീർ രചിച്ച ലഘുനോവലാണ് മാന്ത്രികപ്പൂച്ച. 1968 ലാണ് ഈ കൃതി പ്രസിദ്ധപ്പെടുത്തിയത്. ബേപ്പൂരിലുള്ള വീട്ടിൽ വച്ചാണ് ഈ കൃതി അദ്ദേഹം രചിച്ചത്. ബഷീറിന്റെ വീട്ടിലെത്തിച്ചേർന്ന ഒരു പൂച്ചയെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റിയാണ് കഥ വികസിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ പൂച്ചയും ബഷീറിന്റെ അയൽക്കാരും തമ്മിലുള്ള വിവിധ ബന്ധങ്ങളും ആണ് കഥാതന്തു. പൂച്ച ആ നാട്ടിലുള്ളവരുടെ ഒരു വിശ്വാസം സംരക്ഷിക്കാൻ നിമിത്തമാവുന്നതാണ് കഥ. ആ കാലത്ത് സമൂഹത്തിൽ നിന്നിരുന്ന വിവിധ അനാചാരങ്ങളെ നർമ്മത്തിൽ പൊതിഞ്ഞ രൂക്ഷ വിമർശനം നടത്താൻ ബഷീർ ഈ കഥ ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

About the author

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer is regarded as one of the prominent literary figures ever existed in india. He was a legend in Kerala.

He was one of those outspoken figures who revolutionized Malayalam Literature, and Thus the World Literature itself with his dauntless sarcasm, satire, and black humor.

Often referred to as the Beypore Sultan (the king of Beypore) by the colleagues, he was one of the prominent figures behind the artistical, economical, and social reformation of the Kerala Culture.

His novel Shabdangal (The Voices) was once banned due to its echo that cyclonized a once feudalistic society.

He is also regarded as the translators nightmare. This is mainly because of the colloquial touch he added to his writings, which ethnically speaking would lose its humor and meaning when translated to other languages.

He was the sufi among the writers and and the greatest exponent of Gandhian Thought.

He was awarded with Padma Sri in 1982 for his overall contributions to nation as a freedom fighter, writer, and as a political activist.

Only very few authors were able to bring humor, like Basheer using animals in their novels. We can see how effectively he used a goat as the central character in his famous novel, Pathummayude Aadu. Here we can see how he uses a cat to evoke humor and move the story forward in an intricate yet effective manner.

Did you know?

The most delicious delicacies are sometimes made using the simplest ingredients.

Basheer's writing is like that. A writing style so simple and personal that anybody, literally anybody, even a child can read and enjoy it.

Yet, it has substance to think about. Basheer will take you on a journey from a little household of ordinary people to the Universe and back to the household in the span of a page.

Manthrikapoocha is one such book. It is a laugh riot at several pages. I am someone who finds it difficult to spot humor in writing. But, this one cracked me up several times.

The writing style, the way Basheer addresses his wife, daughter, neighbors, the innocent cat, the cock, and his family of seventeen minus one hen, his friendship with the Swami - everything is beautiful.

Such a beautiful reading experience.

Also, Basheer does a phenomenal task of highlighting of how even a name can create religious differences and cause a split between people. This is done in a subtle way. The onus is on the reader to think of it deeply and see how religion splits people and breaks love, even if it is a pet.

Basheer might have left the mortal world. But, he still lives amidst us in the form of numerous wonderful stories like this.

പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിന്റെ സ്രഷ്ടാവേ!

What sorcery is this?

How can someone think like this?

How can someone write like this?

A beginner can pick this book and relish it like an avid reader.

An avid reader can read this and have his/her wisdom eyes open in an instant.

Basheer was 60 years old when ‘Manthrikapoocha’ was published.

I can only sit and agape at the ease with which he seamlessly blends humor, spirituality, philosophy, and reality in the form of a very simple story.

Does this book even have a story? I don’t know.

It is a beautiful composition of events, occurring one after the other, punctuated by intriguing next-door characters.

Amidst the vast Universe, with its known and unknown galaxies, named and nameless stars, planets, and countless worlds, there exists only one writer who can anchor you to the earth while letting your imagination soar across cosmic realms.

It is Basheer.

Note the tone - I would like to say this to anyone planning to read Basheer and probably have a longish conversation with you if have already read his many masterly writings. This is the fourth book of Basheer I read, third in Malayalam and I can safely say, I lost minimum 30% of the book in translation - and yet loved it.

When a cat strolls into his sprawling household (a mini farm), accompanied by the sounds of conch, where the author and a white leghorn are the outnumbers male species - the dynamics of the household changes. The many friends of his missus in the neighborhood addressed every time as "sowbaghyavathy" have a decidedly high influence on the happenings in the house. Throw in a philosopher Sadhu and a Hindu-Muslim philosophy discussions. Slowly the tale keeps changing shape with entertaining anecdotes and the cat ends up performing it's many "miracles".

The book as a whole was lighthearted and yet if you filter the tone, there is a thinking man's novel. This was the case with his other books as well, where an animal is thrown in as the main character, while social commentary is far more on the top of the author's mind.

Ignore the sarcasm and married men jokes for best results. If there is a translation of this book in Tamil or English, I think I would give it a go again.

വളരെ ആസ്വാദ്യകരവും ഹാസ്യവും നിറഞ്ഞ രചനയാണ് ബഷീറിന്റെ മാന്ത്രിക പൂച്ച. കടലിന് അടുത്തുള്ള രണ്ടേക്കർ പുരയിടത്തിലാണ് ബഷീർ ഭാര്യയോടും മകളായ ഷാഹിനയോടും കൂടെ താമസിക്കുന്നത്.  ആ രണ്ടേക്കറിൽ പശുക്കൾ, കോഴികൾ, പട്ടി, പക്ഷികൾ, പരുന്ത്, കീരി തുടങ്ങി എല്ലാ ജീവജാലങ്ങളും നിരവധി വൃക്ഷലതാദികളും ഉണ്ട്.

ബഷീറിന്റെ മകൾ ഷാഹിന തനിക്കൊരു കളിക്കൂട്ടുകാരി ഇല്ലാത്തതിനാൽ പിതാവിനോട് സങ്കടം പറഞ്ഞു. ആ പ്രശ്നം പരിഹരിക്കാൻ മകൾക്ക് ഒരു പൂച്ചയെ ഉമ്മയും വാപ്പയും കൂടി നൽകി. മുസ്ലിം കുടുംബമായതിനാൽ പൂച്ചയ്ക്ക് കൈസു കുട്ടി എന്ന് പേരുമിട്ടു.

വീട്ടിൽ വളർത്തുന്ന  വൈറ്റ് ലെഗോൺ എന്ന പൂവൻകോഴി ആണ്  മറ്റൊരു താരം.16 പിടക്കോഴികൾ ആണ് അതിന് ഭാര്യമാർ ആയിട്ടുള്ളത്. ബഷീറിന്റെ ചാരുകസേരയിൽ ആണ് അത് മിക്കപ്പോഴും സ്ഥാനം പിടിക്കുന്നത്.

സ്ത്രീ സമൂഹത്തെ സൗഭാഗ്യവതികൾ എന്നാണ് ബഷീർ വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. ഒരിക്കൽ കൈസു പൂച്ച ആണ് ആണെന്ന് സൗഭാഗ്യവതികൾ തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നു, തുടർന്ന് സ്ത്രീ സമൂഹം അതിനെ അകറ്റി നിർത്തുന്നു,  നീലാണ്ടൻ എന്ന് അതിന് പേരും ഇടുന്നു, അങ്ങനെ അത് ഹിന്ദു പൂച്ചയായി.
പെൺപൂച്ച പെട്ടെന്ന് ആൺപൂച്ച ആയപ്പോൾ  അവർ അതിനെ മാന്ത്രിക പൂച്ച എന്നു വിളിച്ചു തുടങ്ങി,അതിനു കാരണം ബഷീർ ആണെന്ന് സ്ത്രീ സമൂഹം വിശ്വസിച്ചു.

അങ്ങനെയിരിക്കെ ഒരു ദിവസം നീലാണ്ടനെ കാണാതാവുന്നു. സൗഭാഗ്യവതികളെല്ലാം ഭയപ്പെടുന്നു, രാത്രികാലങ്ങളിൽ നീലാണ്ടനെ സ്വപ്നം കണ്ടു ഞെട്ടി ഉണരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് കുറച്ചു നാളുകൾക്ക് ശേഷം നീലാണ്ടൻ വീണ്ടും പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നു. സൗഭാഗ്യവതികൾ അവനെ മൈൻഡ് ചെയ്തില്ലെങ്കിലും ആഹാരം കൃത്യ സമയത്ത് കൊടുത്തു.

ബഷീറിന്റെ വാക്കുകളുടെ സൗന്ദര്യം അനുവാചകരെ മറ്റൊരു ലോകത്ത് കൊണ്ടുചെന്നെത്തിക്കും.

കഥാകാരന്റെ മകൾക്ക് കളിക്കാനായി വീട്ടിലെത്തിക്കുന്ന പൂച്ചയെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റിയാണ് ഈ കഥ നീങ്ങുന്നത്.
വീട്ടിലെത്തുന്ന പെണ്പൂച്ചയ്ക്ക് കൈസുക്കുട്ടി എന്നു പേരിട്ട് വളർത്താൻ വീട്ടിലെയും അയല്പക്കങ്ങളിലെയും സ്ത്രീജനങ്ങൾ തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നു. കൈസുക്കുട്ടി എല്ലാവരുടെയും ഓമനയായി വളരുന്നു. അവളുടെ കത്തുകുത്തു കല്യാണം വരെ നടത്താൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചിരുന്ന സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ ആണ് ആ ഞെട്ടിക്കുന്ന കണ്ടെത്തൽ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നത്. കൈസുക്കുട്ടി പെണ്ണല്ല ആണാണ്. നീലാണ്ടൻ എന്ന പേരു ചാർത്തി അവർ അവനെ തിരസ്കരിക്കുന്നു. മടിയിലിരുത്തി ഓമനിച്ചവർ അവനെ തല്ലി ഓടിക്കുന്നു. പൂച്ച ആണ് ആയി മാറിയതിന്റെ കുറ്റം ചാർത്തപ്പെടുന്നത് ആകട്ടെ കഥാകാരന്റെ തലയിലും.
തന്റെ പതിവ് ഫലിത ശൈലിയിലൂടെ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ ഇത്തവണ വിരൽ ചൂണ്ടുന്നത് മത ചിന്തകൾക്ക് നേർക്ക് ആണ്. ആണായി മാറിയ പൂച്ചയിലൂടെയും ഹിന്ദു മുസ്‌ലിം പേരുകൾ വീടിന്റെ നിറം എഴുത്തുകാർക്കിടയിൽ നടന്ന ചർച്ച എന്നിവയിലൂടെ മതത്തിന്റെ പേരിൽ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന വേര്തിരിവുകളിലേക്കു തന്നെയാണ് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ കല്ലെറിയുന്നത്.

ഈ നോവലിന്റെ കഥ ബഷീറിന്റെ വീട്ടിലെത്തിയ ഒരു പൂച്ചയെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റിയാണ്. പെൺപൂച്ച പിന്നീട് നീലാണ്ടൻ എന്ന ഹിന്ദു ആൺ പൂച്ച ആവുന്ന ഭാഗം വളരെ രസകരമായിട്ടാണ് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. അയൽപക്കത്തെ സ്ത്രീകളും സ്വാമിയും ബഷീറിന്റെ തന്നെ ഭാര്യയും മകളും എല്ലാം നർമ്മത്തിൽ ചാലിച്ച നല്ലൊരു പങ്ക് വഹിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഈ പൂച്ചയ്‌ക്കൊപ്പം അയൽവാസിയുടെ വീട്ടിലും സംഭവങ്ങൾ നടക്കുന്നു. മനോഹരമായ നർമ്മവും മുസ്‌ലിം, ഹിന്ദു മതവിഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള കഥകളും, കഥയുടെ വിവരണവും ഇതിൽ ഉൾക്കൊള്ളുന്നു.

It has humour. But unlike other novels from Basheer, the humour and some characters are not very interesting at some places. I found the the storyline to be very week. Ending was abrupt.
