Secrets…

They weigh you down. I’ve kept a secret all my life. It’s my mother’s secret, too. I inherited it from her along with a unique ability that only we possess. She’s gone now, another victim of addiction. If her death isn’t enough to bring me to my knees, her betrayal flays me to the bone. Because the secret my mother and I have been keeping is just one of many she’d kept. She never told me I have an older brother. And now he’s here, eager to be my guardian.

There is no one else. So I move across the country to live with this stranger, my brother. But experience has taught me that most situations are temporary and forming attachments only leads to hurt in the end. That’s why I’m determined to keep to myself in this new place, struggling to seem aloof while I’m quietly breaking apart.

Then I meet Lucas…

His magnetism is hard to resist, and most girls at school aren’t resisting. I don’t fall so easily though, especially not for guys who use their good looks as a weapon. From the start, our interactions are tense and volatile. I know it’s because I’m denying the unwelcome desire that grips me when he’s near. I think he feels it, too. He looks at me with an intensity that threatens to unhinge my resolve. Soon he’s trying to break through the walls that past hurts have built.

But I’m not what I appear to be, and it wouldn’t be fair to get involved with him. At least that’s what I tell myself. Until a terrible act of violence reveals that Lucas has a secret, too. It’s a secret that links us together and ties us to an evil history I could never have imagined.

Keep you from harm is one of these books that are hard to write about. On the one hand it was very beautiful and unique story, that holds a lot of potential, on the other it was dull and had some plot holes. Still, I read this story fast, it was enjoyable and I don’t regret picking it up.

Raielle was born with the power to heal, just like her mother. She has amazing ability to heal every wound, disease, illness. Just one quick touch and people are cured. Her hands are magical.

Unfortunately, having a gift like this isn't always easy. Raielle has to keep it as a secret, especially after someone murdered her mother and she met Lucas.

This sexy YA story is extremely intrguing and I have to confess I was curious how will things go, and that was what kept me reading, but the characters were in need for more polishing. There is lot of hard work to do to make this series not only interesting, but absolutely breathtaking. It could have been done.

First of all, I was instantly drawn to this book because of the cover. I’m not sure exactly what it is that caught my eye, but it seemed to shout, “Read me, I’m an awesome book!” and it didn’t lie.

Keep You From Harm begins with tragedy. Raielle (Pronounced Ray-elle, and don’t offend her by saying it incorrectly. lol) is from a broken home. She has the worst kind of childhood memories with a mom who has always been an alcoholic and drug addict. In the very beginning Raielle is describing her home as she approaches it, and it’s heartbreaking to think of a girl in high school having to deal with such a life, living directly above a drug dealer. As if that isn’t heartbreaking enough, Raielle walks in and finds her mother dead in the kitchen. Instead of being put back into the foster system, as she is already accustomed to with a junkie for a mom, someone else takes her in.. a brother she didn’t know existed. Just one of the secrets her mother kept from her. Raielle moves from one end of the country to the other (California to New York) and does her best to begin a new life with a family she didn’t know she had. While trying to get a feel for her new world, she meets Lucas – a guy she knows must be a player, but that she finds herself undeniably attracted to regardless. Is he the typical hot guy at school that ends up being a jerk, or is there more to Lucas than meets the eye?

This is the first I’ve read of Debra’s work and I must admit that I’m impressed. Her writing is very fluid and easy to read. Her characters are well developed and easy to connect with and care about. Even though Raielle has had a completely messed up childhood, she is extremely smart and has very ambitious goals for her future – something you wouldn’t expect from a child that’s been in and out of foster care and dealing with more than a kid should ever have to carry on her shoulders. She has depth which caused me to like her character a great deal.

Keep You From Harm reads like a contemporary romance/drama and I was comfortable with that, but then the author threw me for a loop by dropping a paranormal twist into the mix. It’s not what I would consider an overused paranormal element either, which I was really happy about. Raielle isn’t pleased about it, though. She doesn’t consider her newly discovered ability a gift, as some people would, but more of a curse, and it was easy to understand how she came to such a conclusion. What Raielle doesn’t know is that Lucas has a secret, too, one that links them together by a twisted history.

If you love drama and romance combined with a dash of paranormal, I highly recommend picking up a copy of Keep You From Harm. This is a great story that left me longing for more.

Keep You From Harm

5 Amazing Stars for this Heartbreaking beautiful sexy YA read!

Raielle, was born with a gift...or is it a curse? Her mother had it and so did her grandmother before her. Raielle's life was based on lies and mystery. A tragedy uproots her and places her with strangers who call themselves family. Family she didn't even know she had. Scared, feeling alone and betrayed by her mother, Raielle finds strength to push forward and in the process falls in love with a handsome and broken boy. Lucas on the outside looks like he has it all. But he harbors secrets himself and Raielle finds herself not only learning what real love is but also trust. How do these two amazing souls find solace in the storm of unknown and terrifying forces? They lean on each other. But when the past comes back again to destroy what they found ..the real test is faced.

This story had me riveted and enthralled. I cried, laughed and rooted for these two characters. I screamed with frustration and anticipation in the end. Cliffhangers can be cruel...but they also keep you waiting for more. I'll be first in line.

Wow, Keep You From Harm was so good! Really good. I got it for review maybe a month or two ago and by the time I got around to reading it, I forgot that it had a paranormal element to it. So when I started reading I thought it was going to be your normal contemporary, slightly angsty romance. But wow, was I wrong. I mean there was romance, and drama but there was also this really cool ability to heal woven in. I have read plenty of paranormal and special ability books, but Keep you From Harm felt fresh and different. It really felt like a contemporary drama/romance plus a paranormal. All wrapped up in one.

Raielle is breathtakingly beautiful and it seems like every single guy she comes into contact with seems to want her. But she is so jaded and consumed with just dealing with surviving her whole life that she genuinely seemed oblivious to her looks, which was kind of nice because she wasn’t rude or conceited AT ALL. She was very guarded, and sometimes that made her come off as kind of harsh and short with people, but once you got to know her she was the most selfless person ever. It was really incredible the lengths she would go to to help others.

When her brother came to get her, she had never even heard of him. Her mom kept him and the rest of her/and his family from her. So naturally, she was a little skeptical of him. She is just used to being on guard, that she is slow to open up to new people. I really wanted to like her brother, and I think I did like him, but I think a lot of my hesitance towards him was because of Raielle. She rubbed off on me, and I couldn’t help but feel some of her skepticism towards him.

The romance between Raielle and Lucas was great. They were instantly attracted to each other. I wouldn’t call it instant love, I would call it attraction. Because the love and romance took time to grow between the two of them and they faced their share of ups and downs. Overall, it was very realistic and more than a little drama and angst filled. But it worked for the two of them. They both have a past and they both have to face their past throughout the course of the story.

Keep you From Harm is such a great story. I couldn’t get enough of it. I was sad when it was done because I wanted to read more. It leaves you at kind of a pivotal moment. I wouldn’t say it is a cliffhanger per se, but it does leave you wondering what will happen next. There are so many levels to this story. There is the romance between Raielle and Lucas, who I absolutely LOVED, there is the relationship with Raielle and her newly found family, and then there is the mystery of her power and trying to find out more about it and her real father. I am really impressed with Keep you From Harm and it is a series that I will definitely be continuing.

Bueh.

Raielle... bueno, no he llegado a conectar con ella.

3.5 "I honestly didn't expect the story to turn out the way it did" Stars

This book was really good. Better than I expected. Full of surprises. There were a lot of things that I absolutely did not see coming in this book. I’ll be honest and tell you that I thought this was just the story of a broken girl who meets a broken guy and then they fall in love. Wrong. So very, very wrong. It’s more than that, a shit load more than that.

I won't make a little summary for it because you should definitely go into this one completely blind. However, I do have to say that the official synopsis for this story is a really good one. I read it and thought I knew where this story was going. Shouldn’t have thought that. It keeps you in the dark about a lot of things. It's perfect. So go along, and read that one, you won’t be spoiled in the least bit.

Now let’s talk about characters, shall we? I loved Raielle, she’s a very brave girl. I personally wouldn’t have done half of the things she did, and if we’re being real here, I sure wouldn’t have survived long enough to do them. She’s been through a lot, and she never gave up. She kept her head high and decided she wasn’t going to have a miserable life. No matter the circumstances. I freaking loved Lucas. He was just so cute, supportive, understanding and just plain lovable. The perfect boyfriend. Gwen and Myles, Raielle’s friends, were also pretty great characters. Now if you’re wondering why I’m just stating every character I liked or loved in this book, well, that’s because I hated all the following characters: Kyle, Chloe, Alec, Chad, and Cora. But it was mostly only Alec and Cora. They were just… disgusting. But it was intended, so everything is alright.

As for the story? It was great. Honestly. There was a lot of mystery that kept me on my toes and surely kept me awake in the wee hours of the morning. I literally couldn’t put it down. The suspense was killing me. I would say, however, that the actual action was slow to arrive, but that sure didn’t make the book boring. Not at all. All that mystery was the build up to the action, which made this book that much more intense because you constantly knew something was going to happen, but you just didn’t know what nor when. In fact, some parts were so intense, that I was actually feeling real physical stress. I was downright stressed out.

Like I said before, there were a lot of things I didn’t see coming while reading this book. I don’t know if maybe some parts were so obvious that they became completely unexpected, or if they really came out of nowhere. One way or another, it was really, really well done.

The love between Raielle and Lucas was cute. I can’t say that it was so raw I felt like I could touch it with my own hands, but it was definitely cute. Their relationship sort of starts as “instalove” but it was done well enough that it didn’t really matter. What can I say, I was just into that Lucas guy. A lot.

The first book ends quite abruptly, but I wouldn’t call it a cliff-hanger. Let’s just say I think I know what’s going to happen in the second book. But then again, I thought I knew what would happen in the first book, and I was completely wrong… so we never know.

I know this review is quite short, awkward and not very detailed, but that’s because I’m desperately trying not to spoil anyone about anything. Trust me, it’s difficult. I know this isn’t my best review but I’ll make it easier for you; the only thing you need to know about this book is that it’s a good one. Now read it.

Original review here: http://offbeatvagabond.blogspot.com/2013/12/book-review-keep-you-from-harm-remedy-1.html

Keep You From Harm is a story that follows a young woman named Raielle. She is going through something most kids couldn't imagine. She found her mom murdered and has found that she has a brother her mom lied about. Her brother, Kyle, has taken her in and will watch over her. She is now going to a new school and has quickly made friends even though she doesn't really want to. She has a secret that makes her avoid a connection with a lot of people. Raielle is still struggling with the lie her mom told her, but she will soon find out there is plenty her mom didn't tell her. Some of which may cost her her life.

This is definitely not your typical Young Adult read and I was very happy about that. I didn't expect the twists and turns. The mystery had me on the edge of my seat. Raielle is an interesting read. She feels cursed because of her ability. She has the ability to heal all injuries, but it sometimes comes with a huge price. When she doesn't use her power, she is in pain. She tries her best to avoid people, but that doesn't work for her at her new school. She seems to be attracting a lot of attention, both good and bad. But what started off as bad attention quickly becomes good when she meets Lucas. Lucas was a bit standoffish at first with everyone not just Raielle. Things change when they find that they actually have feelings for each other. But they both have secrets that may destroy one another. I did love their relationship though. They had a lot of things to clear up. It was incredible seeing how far their connection went. That was an interesting revelation. I also loved the side characters. Penelope, Raielle's niece was insanely cute, it killed me. I loved Raielle's friends, Gwen and Myles. They were both the kind of people that were good for Raielle, especially Gwen. I loved her.

This story was a breath of fresh air. I love that it is a story about a seemingly normal teenage girl who has experience a lot of trauma. But it turns out a lot of her trauma is due to the fact that she has an ability that no one can know about. She knows her mom had it and it nearly destroyed her and maybe made her lose her life. Raielle wants to know if her brother may have it, but while at a a party she uncovers another secret her mom kept from her. The secret will unravel more that Raielle bargained for. I felt so bad for Raielle. Every time she thought she was ahead, she would find something that would knock her a million steps back. Her and Lucas had some hardships that held them back. Raielle is trying to get out of her own hell and Lucas was living it. His life at home is beyond terrifying. I couldn't believe it and again, there is a connection here that no one saw coming. I loved the build up in the book and the suspense. This is my first read from Doxer and it won't be my last. I am dying for more of this series.

This is highly recommended. If you want a mature YA read with a touch of paranormal, this is the perfect read. You will get very engulfed in this story and the characters. It is so based in reality, but it has a bit of magic which I really like. It added to the mystery and suspense of the book. You will breeze through this book. I am so excited for the next book. Doxer really knows how to capture an audience and she has herself a new fan.

description

The good: Refreshing and intriguing plot; good pacing, and likable characters.

The bad: Nothing that I could pick up on.

"With great power comes great responsibility."
--For some reason, this is the first thing that popped up in my mind when I learned of Raielle's secret.

Raielle is just your average teenage girl EXCEPT she isn't exactly normal. She has a secret, well, gift if you will, that can be seen as an endowment or even a curse.

After her mom dies, she finds herself in the custody of a brother she never knew about and moving to a new school.

Enter Lucas. Lucas is the your typical high school ladies man. At first, he and Raielle don't get on with one another but as fate would have it, one situation leads to another and the two can't deny that they're somehow meant to cross paths.

Now with a growing undeniable attraction for one another, and Lucas holding his very own secret, it seems that the secrets that brought them together could be the very own that tear them apart.

My thoughts:
Over all, great read!! I must have read this in about four hours and was very intrigued with all of the suspense and trying to figure out what was going to happen next.

I felt very bad for Raielle as I could see her dilemma at every turn. With her gift, people will be greedy and will always want a piece of her and a lot of it she can't control herself. Her gift, like everything else, has it's limitations and with that there are dire aftereffects that may follow if she doesn't use it right.

"You have to be careful, Raielle. Everyone wants a piece of you. You need to be smart. Don't let people use you for their own purposes."

As for Lucas, I also sympathized with him as well. Due to a "fallout" with Raielle's grandmother years before, it has affected his home life and in the end he has to sacrifice a lot of his childhood toward being the man of the house and taking care of his brother while his dad is away and his mom is in her moods.

I am now very curious as to where Ms. Doxer plans to take the next book in the series since at the end of this story it kind of leaves you at a semi-cliffhanger. Well, actually, I take that back. It's not a cliffhanger but it does leave you hanging as to ponder what's in store for Raielle (and even Lucas) as now the stakes have risen considerably and their relationship has taken a standstill.

I CAN'T WAIT!!

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Raielle, has kept a secret about her unique ability. She has inherited this from her mom. When her mom dies, she is thrown into a new life and discovers she has an older brother eager to take her in. What Raielle doesn’t know is that the secret of her ability is just the start of secrets. There is so much more.

When Raielle meets Lucas, sparks fly. They are two magnets from the moment they meet. Because of Raielle’s past she is not eager in fessing up to the feeling she gets around Lucas. She has always learned to keep her emotions and feelings away. Yet, when she is near Lucas all she wants to do is FEEL. Their connection is undeniable, intense, and passionate. She later finds out that Lucas also has a secret and that they are connected in ways they never thought possible.

The writing was outstanding. Brilliant and addicting, Keep You From Harm is a MUST read for those who love Paranormal Romance. I consider myself a true contemporary romance lover, but because of this book I am having a MAJOR book hangover and I need more! I cried, I laughed, I cheered everyone on. These characters are so memorable and will stay with me for a very long time. Every single character in this book added to this story in many ways. The ups and downs of this book was unbelievable. Just when you think the secrets are all out, there’s more. I have a feeling we have no idea what we’re in for in the next book, and I cannot wait!

Although this story is far from over, I am so glad I read it. I have fallen in love with paranormal romance all over again! Debra Doxer. I was a fan when I read your contemporary, but you have sealed the deal now! I am forever a fan of yours! Despite the cliffhanger, I know the wait will be worth it. This beautiful story about love and secrets is both powerful and fascinating. 5++++ stars!!

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the author through the Goodreads' group "Lovers of Paranormal". First of all, this book makes me feel more like the book nerd I know I am. On the outside I try to act all calm and mature, but on the inside, I see myself with crazy eyes and pulling my hair as I wait, not so patiently, for the next book, to find out what happens next. If you haven't figured it out, yes, it has one of those pesky cliffhangers that we love to hate. This book took my attention from early on, and kept it the entire way through. I started reading, and before I knew it, I missed almost an entire day. I love the whole concept, and the fact that the paranormal aspect was only part of the bigger story. Really well done, Ms. Doxer. Thank you for a great read.

This was better than I expected. I was a bit wary that it will be the usual cliche story of new girl going to a new school getting the attention of the only unattainable boy in school. While it has the aforementioned formula in the storyline, there is also the paranormal aspect which was executed effectively in the story. Raeille Blackwood grow up in a very unstable environment, fleeting from one foster home to another till her mom got custody of her again and despite coming from a broken family she is very deligent with her schooling knowing it is her ticket out of the slum life. Things will change for her when she found her mom murdered in their kitchen and soon discovered an older brother she never knew took custody of her and brought her to a new place to live with his family.
I find Raeille to be a very likable character, despite being the typical california blond beauty she is sympathetic and her ability to heal which I found that runs in her family made her sensitive to other people. She normally hides her ability for most of her life because her mom always told her it would be dangerous and attracts bad attention. She is a smart girl in general and doesn't care for high school drama and cliques. Which is one of the reason why school's own most wanted boy Lucas Diesel (sometimes I feel like his name is like a secret fantasy for book boyfriend of the author) was drawn to her. There were the usual catty school b*tches, but Raeille took them all in stride and made new friends with the unpopular ones.
There were times that I get annoyed though of how both Raeille and Lucas blow hot and cold towards each other. But hey what's romance without the drama? they got real close when an incident led to Raeille revealing her ability to Lucas and even used it to help him with his family's dark problem. However, when Raeille tried to use her healing ability once again this time to help her own family it didn't go well as they planned and now Raeille is the one in need of help before she runs out of time. Man I was devastated when that happened it was not fair and poor Lucas is desperately trying to do all he can for Raeille. Then in the end help came but at a devastating price...I just can't take the feelssss!!!!
Over all I really like the writing style, she delivered this story very effectively and made what normally made me annoyed even tolerable and even engaging most times. I want to dive in the next book already coz really that ending was heart breaking.

Keep you from harm, is a breathtaking novel it completely raptured me with emotions I couldn't even contained. As you read this novel you wouldn't believe its a paranormal, this was so shocking to me because the author has totally sucked you in, you just thinks it's a young adult contemporary novel. Raeille is a young beautiful, selfless, smart girl who has a gift that is unbelievable to endure. This power she has to heal people is a gift and a curse. Her mother also has this power too, but her mother didn't know how to work her power and it just became a deadly curse for her. Raeille eventually, knows what her gift can do and finds out more about her family background, while she moves in with her brother. The drastic situation events that leads to her mothers death. Now, her life is turned up side down and she moves to a different state and try to start a new life. Raeille life was always sheltered because her mother kept it that way, her emotions and just living was a non issue. When she enters into a new life and new beginning she start to see it not that bad, and her life begins to enfold when she spots her new love of her existence, his name is Lucas.
The story starts to unravel when Raeille and Lucas becomes one and the love between them is unstoppable and matures beyond high school love. This story has everything you would want in a paranormal novel, a gift that can have you cherished and scorned at the same time. Love that takes over your soul in selfless act. Because that's what love is right? And it also has a cliffhanger what's a paranormal if it doesn't have one!! A must read 4 stars!! Can't wait to see what happens next with Raeille and Lucas.

I know there are a lot of readers that do not care for the "perfect" and selfless heroines who get amazing grades and that everyone loves. I get it that sometimes it can come off as unrealistic especially if that heroine came from a horrible background. However, I love those heroines and I liked Raielle.

After Raielle finds her mother dead in their apartment, she goes to live with her brother and his family who she never knew anything about. There are a lot of secrets that Raielle starts discovering that her mother withheld from her. Raielle starts attending her senior year at a new school where she meets Lucas Diesel. I love the heroes like Lucas. The guy that every girl wants and he has a reputation for getting everything he wants. Lucas' life seems great on the outside, but he has secrets of his own.

There were some parts of this story that dragged and I found myself skimming. However, in the end, I have no regrets paying $2.99 for this book. It does end in a cliffhanger and I do love cliffhangers, but it was not enough for me to want to click BUY for the next book.

This book...the story, the premise, the friends were everything I love in my stories. I do love YA high school paranormals.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the “Lovers of Paranormal” Group on Goodreads.com

This is a very interesting, unique, well written story and a great read. Raielle has had a troubled past and a secret she can't share. She meets Lucas and her life seems to start looking up before something happens that threatens her life. I think Raielle is a remarkable character and I really like her. Lucas has secrets of his own that he is keeping. The way the relationship developed between the two of them was done in a believable way. I enjoyed his character very much. The secondary characters in the book are also well written. This book has intrigue and mystery with unexpected plot twists. The book ends in a cliff hanger so I am anxiously looking forward to reading the next book.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal) So many twists and turns and surprises. I couldn't put the book down. Raielle comes face-to-face with family she did not know she had. And a life she did not know existed. You will go through a emotional roller coaster with Raielle. I highly recommend this mature YA romance. I can't wait for the second book. Mrs. Doxer left it with a very good cliffhanger. What will happen to Raielle next?

Well damn.. I wasn't expecting that.

This book blew my mind away. Like..... I'm speechless because it was so good.

I'm not going into detail about it - 1. it's 11:00 and I'm tired and 2. theres so much to it.

But I will say that this book is NOTHING like you will ever read. It has the perfect blend of humor, romance, sadness, and many other emotions.

Just read it for yourself and see what I mean! I promise, you won't regret it!

I have no idea what I just read. The first half drove me nuts. The whole back and forth between Ray & Lucas seriously made me want to pull my hair out. Yet when I hit that middle mark it changed and the book flew by! I couldn't read fast enough! And that ending! My heart is still pounding and cracking with pain. Can't wait to read the next book! Oh poor Lucas! :(

I love mixing in a good paranormal romance every once and a while on top of all the NA and Contemporaries that I read. Keep You From Harm was definitely a good choice. I really liked the mix between the paranormal element and the contemporary romance side. Neither genre overshadowed the other and I really liked the way the paranormal element was incorporated into the story.

Raielle is a senior in high school and after her mother dies, she is sent from San Diego to New York to live with her older brother Kyle, who she didn't even know existed until her mother's death. She is instantly connected Lucas and feels drawn to him but she quickly denies it. Raielle carries a secret that her mother warned her can be dangerous if people know about it so she keeps everyone at arm’s length. However, Lucas feels the connection too and he won't give up so easy. He wants to be with Raielle and he'll do anything to convince her it's meant to be. However, shocking discoveries and tragedy may take the decision out of their hands.

Raielle is smart, confident and can stand on her own. She sticks to herself and doesn't really get close to people but she also isn't a push over either. I loved the way she held her own and how strong she was considering everything she had been through. While she had a tough upbringing and she was used to taking care of herself, she still loved her mother and losing her was tough. I think it was even harder on her because she had such conflicting emotions about her mom. She loved her but she was angry to find out that her mom had kept so many secrets from her. I could tell Raielle was really guarded so I liked seeing her open up a bit to her brother and his family as well as her new friends, Miles, Gwen and of course Lucas. I loved how well she held herself together and played it cool with her emotions when she was dealing with Lucas.

"Emotions are dangerous. So are expectations."

I liked Lucas but I also felt like he was more moody than a girl on PMS. He seriously ran so hot and cold that it was ridiculous. He felt this connection to Raielle too and he made sure she gave him a chance and then he turned around acted like a dick. I felt like Lucas really grew as a character and redeemed himself. Clearly he messed up and he knew it. He worked extra hard to prove himself to Raielle and he definitely showed how much he cared for her. Lucas also had a lot going on in his life and when we find out the personal issues he faces, it's sheds some insight into why he is a bit emotionally messed up. He is a loyal and loving big brother and I really liked that about him. He would do anything to protect his brother.

This book also had some really great side characters and I especially liked Miles, Gwen, and Kyle. Miles is Raielle's neighbor and the first friend she makes. He is a really good guy and he instantly connects with her. He is also Lucas' best friend and he looks out for both of them as they build their relationship. Gwen isn't one of the popular girls but Raielle has never cared about that and they instantly connect as friends. Gwen helps her open up a little bit and she encourages her to give Lucas a shot. However, when Lucas pulls a few dick moves, she is totally there for Ray. Kyle is Raielle's brother and I loved that he truly wanted to get to know her and be a big brother. He knows she hasn't had the greatest life and he wants her to feel like she is loved and has family. I never doubted his intentions with her. While I didn't particularly dislike Chloe, Kyle's wife, I did feel like she judged Raielle and didn't really take the time to get to know her. She assumed Raielle is messed up because of her childhood even though Ray does nothing but prove her wrong.

Raielle holds a secret power that she shared with her mother and was told never to tell anyone. While it is a special gift, it can also be dangerous and people would use her to exploit it. Upon her mother's death, she learns that her mom kept so many secrets from her and I was torn for her because it was obvious that it hurt her deeply. She will never have the chance to confront her mother about the secrets or find all the answers she is looking for. I know keeping this secret and having no one to share in the burden with was tough for her so I was glad that Lucas discovered her secret and that he ended up being someone she could trust to confide in. As their relationship grew and they fell even more for each other, it was obvious that he would do anything to protect her. He definitely proved his feelings for her and I definitely became a fan of his. Raielle is truly a good person and she makes a huge sacrifice that was heart wrenching. The only way she knows how to change things is to find her real father and I loved that Lucas was willing to drop everything to help her. While the ending wasn't a huge cliffhanger, it definitely left things hanging in the air and I'm desperate to know how it's all going to play out. I guess I'll have to wait for book 2!

Overall, I really enjoyed Keep You From Harm a lot and found it very intriguing from beginning to end. It is well written with a nicely developed plot that flowed really well. I was constantly intrigued by Raielle and wanted to know more about her secret. Even though we learn about her abilities early on, there is still so much to learn about it and I loved how the author incorporated it into the story. I haven't read another paranormal romance quite like this one and I am definitely hooked to this series.

Este es un libro muy simple y cliché. Los personajes son planos y la trama es bastante predecible, pero aún así entretiene.

The cover for this book absolutely drew me in. The synopsis sounded fascinating. I’m pleased to say the book itself absolutely lived up to the cover and the blurb. Unique and unpredictable, this book was impossible to put down.
"Emotions are dangerous. So are expectations.”

When Raielle discovers her mother’s body, she’s heartbroken. When the police officers who arrive tell her that her brother is on his way, she’s shocked. She didn’t know she had a brother. It was just one of the many secrets her mother kept from her. Of course, Raielle is keeping her own secrets, too. She and her mother possessed the same magical ability that allowed them to heal the injured or sick with a simple touch. But their gift comes with rules and exceptions, as well as the potential for danger if anyone finds out. So, as Raielle moves across the country with her brother to join the family she never knew she had, she is determined to keep her secret.

When she first arrives in New York, she sets eyes on a gorgeous and mysterious guy at her neighbor’s house. She becomes fast friends with the neighbor, Myles. He’s a closeted gay guy who is friends with some of the most popular people in their school. (Very progressive, this school, apparently.) I loved Myles. It was nice to see a gay character in a book that wasn’t a total stereotype. The mysterious guy is Lucas, one of the most sought-after guys at her new school. Because of her looks and her new girl status, Raielle gets a lot of attention from her new classmates, some of it more positive than others. After one of them confronts her about talking to her boyfriend, Lucas rescues her… and then walks away. He’s hot and mysterious and catches her attention. He’s also friends with Myles and they share a number of classes, so they keep getting thrown together.
“I wonder if my physical reaction to him will ever approach something close to normal.”

The more time Raielle and Lucas spend together, the stronger the spark, the attraction they share grows. Raielle knows nothing good can come from opening up to him, despite his efforts to be there for her. Lucas is confused by her. He’s used to girls throwing themselves at him. That’s not Raielle’s style. One night as they’re hanging out at a club, Raielle spots a guy that she’s sure she saw outside her old home in California. When she tries to talk to him, he disappears and she tries to find out information about him from one of his bandmates, a total manwhore that she goes to school with. This starts off the gossip mill – and Lucas’ jealous streak. It gave him a little kick in the butt to make a move. They admit their feelings and thus starts their relationship. They’re both keeping secrets, but those are bound to come out with time, too.
“You keep saving me from rabid blondes,” I tell him.
“You keep pissing them off,” he answers.

I adored Raielle and Lucas together. For two people who appeared to have it together, they were both broken and finding each other helped. After an “accident” in which Lucas’ arm is broken, Raielle can’t help but heal him. It’s then that the secrets start to come out and they find the connection between their families might ruin what they have now. A series of realizations and events is set in motion, complete with a heartbreaking twist that took my breath away and a cliffhanger that left me desperate for more.

But, don’t get me wrong. This story isn’t all about Raielle and Lucas’ romance. It seems that nearly every character is keeping a secret – some significantly more dangerous than others. There were moments in this book where I was on the edge of my seat, not even coming close to guessing what would happen next. The character development in this book was great. It goes without saying that I connected with Raielle and Lucas (swoon), but the secondary characters were nearly as fantastic. I already mentioned Myles. Raielle’s other close friend, Gwen, was fantastic as well. In Myles and Gwen, Raielle had two wonderful friends. I liked that in this book, the characters nor their actions, were completely stereotypical. Raielle’s group of friends was rather diverse – personalities and people you wouldn’t normally see as friends, but it seemed natural in this book. In addition to the suspenseful moments, there were sweet ones that make me sigh, and one sexy scene that was truthfully more NA than YA, in my opinion, but it was tasteful. The story sucked me in and didn’t let go until I finished the last page. Have I mentioned I can’t wait for the sequel?! What a cliffhanger.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All quotes come from the review copy and may differ from the final version.

My thoughts...

"Deadly poetic and sexy as sin."-Lite-Rate-Ture Reviews

This was incredibly gorgeous! It's not beautiful, but gorgeous. I can't freaking believe it, I not only fell madly so engrossedly in love with the story, but the writing of the author. She was very poetic like Colleen Hoover. I really love the way she made her story become so vibrant and alive, her fingers couldn't stop typing so magically. I know from experience that writing with such magic is very impossible to perfect, but when she was able to accomplish it. I revere those intricate fingers of hers. Such beauty.

"Did he sext you? Oh my god, that's so hot." I roll my eyes.

"No, he just said he wanted to be the last person I spoke to before I went to sleep." I smile

In the book I got the chance to meet the two lovely characters namely Raille and Lucas. The first time I saw Raille in the book, I thought she had a weird name, but what can I say? My name is almost as weird as hers. LOL. While our boy Lucas, seems to be the type to be flappable. He has a temper and an arrogant personality. He doesn't like the word "No or I'll think about it." When it comes to Lucas no girl will stop to think or even hesitate. He's the king of lust, totally a good look for him. But when he sees the angel *Cough* me *Cough* I mean Raille, he was instantly on his knees. Oh yeah! Waaaay the go Raille!

His arrogance made me deeply feel something for him, you can instantly tell that he had a facade. The first time Raille and Lucas locked eyes, there was intimacy and passion, they connected just by watching and breathing at the same time. Lucas is definitely not your ordinary showstopper. Yup, that's a word. Verify it! Drooling over Lucas is very ungodly of me. I am totally lost and confused if he's not in the chapter, Debra would have me begging for more scenes of Lucas.

The steamy romance between the two brought me to refuge. Although, they were a bit on and off, but somehow Debra made it work. She made it look so glamorous, I always hated those times when there would be ridicule fights, it seemed so childish to me, but when it's about them I am just crying buckets of tears. Raille isn't the type of girl to backdown, she's notorious and dangerous, but as always drop dead gorgeous. Even I was on me knees, just look at the cover?! That's what lured me in.

When I got to finish the book....I did this...

I needed the second book as soon as possible! I was so pissed that I finished it so incredibly fast that I didn't think what harm it would to do me emotionally and mentally. I had to stay in a corner and just mope to myself, and I continued to scold myself. I was that mentally damaged.

During when I was reading the book, I had to stop and let it all in. (Stop the feels)

There are books that would just bring your mind to stop, you won’t be able to hear anything from the real word, but the dialogues that you are reading. It took a while for my parents to catch my attention when I was reading Keep You From harm, they even threatened to steal my Kindle if I wouldn’t stop reading, but I just gave them my snarky look, but in reality I wasn’t paying a bit of attention to the last few words they just said. I was that engrossed in the book, this book is dangerous…you won’t be able to escape the poetry in Debra’s writing. I could have gotten myself killed. Just kidding! LOL

And before this review comes to end, I would like to share that there are secrets in this book that are unlikely. I haven’t encountered a book that could be compared to this book, it’s original and just flawless. If I could describe this book in two words it would be poetically deadly. I would want to add sexy, but two words is enough to lure me in once more. *Flails*

I recommend this to only New Adult readers. There are scenes not appropriate for children. hehehe

This book was originally reviewed on The Book Hookup.

**I received a copy of this book from the author,
but that did not influence the review**

First Thoughts: 5 stars Holy crap this was good. Dark, gritty, and full of secrets…this book is why I love my paranormal romances! I feel sorry for whatever book I start next because Keep You From Harm was pretty epic.

Plot, Pacing, Setting, and Style: Raielle had to move across the US to live with her brother. She didn’t really want to go, but she had no one else, and no other choice so she made the best of it. She brought her secrets with her and had no expectations for a normal senior year. However, the first time she saw Lucas Diesel all those thoughts went out the window. This is the story of her secrets coming out, and how it affected so many people. This was such a well woven story and I’m so upset that I don’t have book 2 now!

This story was told from Raielle’s POV (but I looked on the author’s website and book 2 is Lucas’s POV SQUEE), and the pacing was phenomenal. I was absolutely addicted to this story.

Main Characters: So one of the many reasons this book is a solid 5 stars is because I loved both MCs. I wanted to be Raielle and Lucas is HOT!

Raielle is so unbelievably selfless, and not in an immature clueless way. She genuinely is such a good person and makes choices that I could only strive to make. I really loved and connected with her.

Lucas is pretty much my favorite type of book boyfriend: brooding and cold. He had his game face and I think I went all tingly every time he showed it. The reader thinks Raielle is the only one who is “damaged goods”, but Lucas had some serious baggage too, which is why he was so detached sometimes…and I loved it.

Romance/Chemistry: Holy crap, YES. The kisses were amazing, the touches so gentle and full of sparks. I might combust just thinking about it. This story definitely has some angst going on, but I feel like Ms. Doxer won’t let us down. This is an NA story, so it has sexual references but it really went with less is more, and my god, it worked.

Title/Cover: I love this title. The more I read the more I understood it. The cover is haunting. It’s wild. It’s kind of a hot mess. It’s totally Raielle.

Twists, Turns, and Secrets: Whoa, YES. I still have more suspicions, but for all you secret lovers out there, this is chock full!

Ending: Ms. Doxer, if this story wasn’t so good I might hate you! Holy cliffhanger!!

Gripes/suggestions: It needs another round of editing. But it really didn’t bother me AT. ALL However, I know some people will be grumpy with this story because of it. I wish everyone could just enjoy it, but to truly push it through to the next level it needs another edit. :)

Final Thoughts/Rec it? A million billion times yes. this story was so good, this author is so talented at creating a web of characters and plots that is so refreshing. You won’t be disappointed.

I take a deep breath, and I will myself to calm down. I open a drawer inside a familiar cabinet, and I force the breakdown my body craves deep within it. this is how I stay focused on what's important. There are an infinite number of drawers in my imaginary cabinet, and I can only hope it never crumbles under the weight of what's hiding inside.

When you read a lot of books (like I do) its easy to find stories that are so similar to each other that you start thinking "Have I read this before?" This book was quite the opposite. The paranormal aspect really made this story stand out and I really enjoyed it.

Raielle isn't your normal seventeen year old. She has special abilities that she must keep secret and has had a rough upbringing. In and out of foster homes while her mother has struggled with addictions. After her mother is shockingly murdered, Raielle ends up moving in with a brother she didn't even know existed. Used to living a life without attachments, Raielle has a difficult time adjusting to living with a family. Then she meets Lucas Diesel and he ignites something within her she's never felt before. she begins to live a 'normal' life but secrets don't stay hidden for long and Raielle is left to deal with their aftermath.

I'm afraid I cant be the sister he wants. I also worry I cant be the girl Lucas wants. I'm afraid I'm going to disappoint them both.

Raielle's character is slow building. The first we meet of her, we see a girl who is introverted, she keeps her emotions to herself and her aim is to get through each day. It was quite a realistic way to be after everything she's been through. Moving in with her brother and his family seems too good to be through, and she's too scared to mess it up. The more time we spend with her, a more carefree, funny and loving 'woman' arises. She's more confident in her abilities and who she wants to be as a person, and some of that is due to Lucas' presence in her life.

I never thought I could feel so connected to someone in such a short time. It's as though those empty places inside me that I just accepted as a part of who I am disappear when we're together.

Then there's Lucas. He's a hard character to bond with from the beginning, what with his attitude problem and all. He does open up, and such a beautiful soul emerges. As we learn more about him its easy to understand why he is the way he is. The connection between them is written so beautifully. In its YA glory, there's a sweetness to it, yet the spark between them is so strong it's palpable. Lucas is so protective of Raielle, yet he is so sweet and tender with her. From the beginning he understands that she's lived a hard life and I love that he is so patient with her, in everything. He soon learns she's not a fragile as you would first assume.

Drawing and moving, this story forces the reader to delve in real life issues and a slice of the otherworldly made tangible through typical high school drama one would expect of such an age.

OMGosh! Can you say cliffhanger? And yes, that is upsetting, mainly because I'm not a huge fan of endings that don't end. Kind of like someone who leaves on a few chips left in the bottom of the bag. But don't let my statement fool you. This is a well-written, intricately mapped-out tale of a seventeen-year-old girl, whose less than desired childhood thrusts her toward adulthood in a very grown-up and unexpected way.

Raille is not the average senior in high school nor is she the typical foster kid. She has a mother. She has a father, though she's never met him and doesn't even know his name. And unbeknownst to her, she also has an older brother. Her mother whisked her away at a young age, leading her to believe it was just the two of them. And her mom was not the best of caretakers, drinking and doing drugs often. And as awful as that might sound, her mother did it to protect her.

Then enters Lucas. Yup, he's the expected studmuffin teen girls love to read about and fantasize over. His unpredictable mood swings and hot-cold reactions to her prove her theory that self-preservation is of utmost importance and trusting people is out of the question. Those inner declarations didn't surprise me, seeing how she'd been shuffled from the foster care system back to her recovered mother, only to do it over again and again.

But soon, Raille's journey with Lucas reveals much more in him than being great eye candy. His family has heart-wrenching secrets, which she can relate to, making her own hidden pains much harder to ignore. Reprises from tense emotion comes to the reader as Raille and Lucus slowly find common ground, and let trust and love blossom between them. Soon, Raille's strange gift of healing is put to the test, showing more of her unique character and bringing her and Lucas even closer. But as you might expect, it also ends up threatening her in ways she never expected, revolving around her mother, the father she's never met, and her newly-found older brother's three-year-old daughter.

As I stated at the beginning, the story leaves the reader hanging, breathlessly grasping for more. But in of itself, it's a story of inner growth and hidden strength in the form of unselfish sacrifice.

Let me end with this: This story is one of the reasons I've remained selectively open to author requested reviews. It's a diamond in rough pages of print and ink.

This is a wonderfully romantic story, so I'd definitely recommend it to any romance lover. It's also a great read for the young a heart, watching the responsible and selfless choices Raille makes instead of the poor ones she could have let her upbringing steer her toward.

In "Keep You From Harm" we read about a young girl whose life changes completely one day. After she finds her mother dead,Raielle thinks that she's alone and doesn't have anyone else ,but she's wrong.
There are too many secrets, big secrets and once again Raielle realizes that her mother didn't tell her a lot, like for exemple the fact that she had a brother who wanted to meet her.

Holy moly! That was my reaction after i finished the book.I can absolutely say that i really liked what i read in this book.It was pretty much exactly what i didn't expect and in a good way ,of course.Unique?Yes.Well written?Absolutely yes.Good characters?Yes.Good story?Double yes. This is good, right?Of course.
What you need to know about Raielle is that she wasn't just a normal girl. Her entire life wasn't perfect, but she had one secret ,a big one, which she never wanted anyone to know. And she pretty much managed to keep it hidden.

Raielle-she wasn't perfect, but i liked her attitude. She was strong and capable of taking care of herself, but in a way she needed someone to be there for her, even if she didn't show that. The kind of girl who was used to taking care of herself and keeping her head low.But that changed completely after she moved in New York.

There were a few times when i held my breath because i didn't know what will happen. So many lies and so many hard moments. But the fact that the characters were created so good it made me think that something good had to happen in the end. That things won't end up bad,but i guess i was wrong.Well,it happens.

Here comes Lucas Diesel.A charming boy who manages to capture Raielle's attention from the beginning.Just one look and swoon! Ha.Well, Lucas was exactly what Raielle needed in her life.At least that's what i thought when i was reading the book.
I admit that sometimes i was a little confused, mainly because of Lucas's attitude .Sometimes he acted normal and sometimes he was acting like an idiot, but in the end i found out the reason why he was like that. And i understand ..

But what i liked the most was how things turned out after all.Yes,not everything was perfect. There were some ups and downs, which were perfect because in a way without those the book wouldn't be the same. The characters were strong and well written, something i like very much. The story was unique and i like that it wasn't simple or too exaggerated.BUT.The end?Speechless.Honestly,i want to know more.I want the next book soon! That has to change..The way it ended wasn't fair..but i guess it had to happen ,so i can't do anything about that.

*I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Keep You From Harm straddles the line between mature YA and New Adult. It's classified as paranormal, but it's really more like a contemporary romance with a paranormal element. This novel boasts a cliffhanger ending, so you'll have to wait to find out just what happens.

Raielle is an easy character to feel sympathy for. Her life has been crap, but she's doing everything in her power to make something of herself. I liked her quite a lot. She's blessed (or cursed) with the power to heal- hence the paranormal aspect of the story. When her mother is murdered, she moves across the country to live with a brother she didn't know existed. Even with all the upheaval, Raielle is still sweet and kind. She blew me away with her self-reliance and intelligence sometimes.

Romantic interest Lucas is dark and brooding. He doesn't express himself well, leaving Raielle thinking he hates her at first. Their relationship is tumultuous since both have secrets they're hiding from the other. Raielle and Lucas make a great couple and I loved their scenes together. When Lucas learns her secret, he's supportive and caring. His desire to love and protect her make him truly swoon worthy.

I loved the first 75% of this story. It's a fast-paced read that builds suspense making it almost impossible to put down once started. It did lag a bit in the middle, but that didn't last too long. My main complaint is that I didn't like the direction it went toward the end. That's just personal choice; I'm sure many readers would like the conflict and angst. I also wasn't pleased with a cliffhanger ending. Since I felt invested in Raielle and Lucas, I really wanted to know what happens. Will I read the next book? Absolutely. I'm dying to find out what happens!

I recommend Keep You From Harm to everyone 17+ that enjoys a good romance with a touch of the paranormal. Because this book is Upper YA, there are some sexual situations and coarse language (akin to an R rated movie, hence the 17+ rating).

This book was amazing!! I haven't read a book I connected this much to in a long time. This isn't one of your average boy meets girl with a little paranormal thrown in. This book has everything romance, family, friends and an amazing girl learning what it's truly like to love and trust others, while being loved in return.
Raielle Blackwood is a girl with healing abilities that have been passed down in her family... But these abilities do not come without rules. Such as you can't defy death and if you try it will come back and in the most unexpected ways. Her family learns this the hard way. Her mother is a alcoholic who has been keeping huge secrets form Raielle her whole life, like the fact that she has a brother. When her mother dies and her brother comes to take her home with him she is skeptical of his motives. Which you can't really blame her seeing the life she has lead. With her new found home she gets to be a part of a real family.
Then she meets Lucas Diesel. The connection is instant but this is no insta love. They both fight tooth and nail to convince themselves they don't truly have any real feelings for each other
other. But Lucas has secrets to that cause him to be cautious with others as well. Their relationship was so real, I immediately felt like they were meant to be and not in a corny way. The author did an amazing job of making their relationship believable and truly loving. Then you have their amazing friends Gwen and Myles. They are true friends and anyone would be lucky to have them. They tell it like it is and make both our main characters see what is right in front of them when they are being too stubborn.
Tho book is intense and unique. While they are in high school and there is of course drama around that there is so much more to this story then that. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants a great read about amazing characters and a suspenseful plot with many twits. This book is a must read and I am eagerly awaiting the next one!

I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review
This book was not what I was gone expect to be, and I am so glad that glad that I got read it, I felt in love with the characters and how this story has it twist.
Reading this book I have to say that it had me in an emotional roller coaster. I cried, laugh and it got me a little angry at some point but I love every single of it, I am gone keep this short since I don’t want to give anything away.
Keep you from harm this is the best title for this book because it’s exactly what this book is about.
The story starts with Raielle coming home from school, and finds her mother seating down in front of the kitchen table, that’s when her life change and that’s when she learns that she has a brother. now her brother Kyle has being trying to get custody of her for the last two years and now he finally have it, Kyle take Raielle back home and she finds out that she has a family that she never knew that she had.
Raielle was born with a gift or is it a cursed? This gift/ cursed runs in her family her mother and grandmother have it too. Now she is in a new place start in a new school and trying to stay away from everyone, except she can’t stay away from Lucas.
Lucas it’s hard to resist and most girls at school aren’t resisting him, he is good looking and he is only interesting in one person and that’s Raielle, but Lucas is also trying to stay away from her and his mood is always changing from hot to cold but he can’t not ignore the magnetism that is going on between them too.
I really liked it how this to fell in love and how they care for each other I love it how Lucas is always trying to protect Raielle and how he doesn’t give up on her and on what he feels for her, this is a beautiful story and I really enjoy it.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP).

I really liked this book. The story line hooked me from the beginning: Raielle finds her mother's dead body after she's been murdered. So right off the bat, I was pulled into the mystery. I also really like the slow reveal of what exactly Raielle has the ability to do. What that ability is also pleasantly surprised me as it's not something I can remember reading about before. It was a take on "paranormal" that seemed new to me.

I really enjoyed the secondary characters too. Gwen & Myles were my favorites. Gwen is initially described as a goth girl, but we find out when she's happy she likes to wear yellow. That's something quirky I enjoyed. Myles is gay, but in-the-closet, and he has a "beard" girlfriend at school. I think that those 2 characters really ring true as far as 2 kids who are in high school and trying to find themselves.

The main characters...well, I did enjoy Raielle, for the most part. I can never quite connect with book heroines who seem to immediately throw aside who they are for a guy they just meet. Raielle at least seemed to try not to do that and was self-aware about it. I wasn't as much of a fan of Lucas in the beginning. He's moody & a bit of a hypocrite. There's a reveal about him that made me understand him a bit more. There's one part in the book, the first time Lucas & Raielle really kiss. Lucas totally goes for the boob. I mean, take your time dude. BUT he IS a teenage guy, so that makes sense to the character. It just seemed too fast. By the end of the book, I didn't dislike him as much as I did through most of the story. We'll see how I feel as we get through the next book. His reaction to Raielle leaving at the end of the book will be a big factor.

Speaking of, yes, there's a cliffhanger at the end of the book. I don't mind cliffhangers, so I was actually pleased with how it ended. And I definitely want to read more to see where we go from here.

This is one of my favorite genres. The paranormal, romantic in me can't help it, I eat them up as fast as I can. There is just something to be said about a good sweet romance with a slight paranormal edge to it and great characters that I can't help but fall in love with.

I loved Raielle the moment I met her and after only the first few pages with already a murder, a hint of the paranormal and an unknown family just waiting to be discovered, knew that this was going to be my kind of story and one that I would relish.

I loved all the characters, main, secondary and even those that flitted in an out for only a moment in time.

This really did have all the elements in a story that I love.

I don't want to get to into detail because I'm afraid I will give something away but this story is chalked full of wonderful characters. Some are moody and you want to smack them while simultaneously hugging them (coughLucascough) and others you have to smile at because they are so adorable and cute (coughMylescough). I know I say this all the time but secondary characters are so important to a story. They really add something to the story that main characters alone can't accomplish.

If you are looking for a whole lot of swoon worthy romance, a good whodunit mystery and of course just the right touch of the paranormal then this really is something you need to read.

The author did an amazing job keeping my interest, having me care for her characters and constantly wondering what was going to happen next.

I had no idea going into this that there was a sequel planned and I couldn't be happier that there is, especially after the way it ended. I can tell there will be so much more planned for Raielle and her friends and family. I can only hope that we get more insight on her abilities, how they work and of course about her heritage.
