This was so interesting to read because it is just from a totally different era and set of societal ideals. Much of the language would make me cringe today. But I enjoyed seeing the way we went from having to save and reuse everything to a more disposable society-you can kind of tell that's where we were headed by the hints inside. And so much of it suggests women needing to be able to be good at every aspect of running a household, fixing things, and doing so without revealing exactly how much things cost. Like how to make your allowance go farther!

The original Heloise had this knack for using language in a clever way without being condescending or overly trite. This is an enjoyable read from another time.

🖋️ When I saw this book in the ten-cent bin at the charity gift shop, I could not resist buying it. I always enjoyed reading the “Hints from Heloise” King Features syndicated column in the Chicago Tribune - the original Heloise; not her daughter! – and this book proved to be a reminiscent and fun look back in the olden days when women loved making a loving and welcoming home for their husbands and children. I was reminded again and again with each turn of the page that the housewife of today enjoys many improvements in home making, some that we just do not think about - using the dishwasher, washer, and dryer; kitchen organization; cooking and general food preparation is easier and healthier nowadays; even cleaning house in some respects is better today; using household appliances is ultra-simple as compared to sixty-plus years ago. There are some tips that I will bet the readers of today believe are new, such as using leftover coffee to freeze and use as ice cubes in iced coffee. Yes, that is an old trick.

The language of this book is light, fun, and an affectionate tribute to women who enjoy making a home for her husband and children. Though some of the tips in this book are archaic and some recipe tips are barf-worthy (the use of MSG and the overuse of salt and sugar, for example), the recipes can be revised and improved by the savvy cook, and the housekeeping tips modified to the home of today. I definitely recommend reading this book, if you can find a copy.
