enjoyable, despite sometimes being a little loose with the truth. a great overview of the presence of evil and Satan throughout history (though mostly in Europe). the chapters are occasionally breathless and it's by no means an exhaustive study of the place of evil in humanity - even treading into schlock-pulp territory sometimes - but still an interesting read.

In theory this sounds like it was right up my alley: The perception of the Devil throughout the centuries. And yet I could never quite get into it and it took me a while to figure out why: Rather than have a proper narrative thread the majority of the book is one anecdote after the next. It's one of those books that you can randomly open up to find something of interest to read, however, as a from-cover-to-cover-read it quickly becomes monotonous.
