The author of Wizards , Jake's War & Inspector Monde does it again.
Laura is a Class A Spellbinder , but nobody has told her yet. Class A's are very rare and each is the equivalent of a regiment or a fleet of ships. They win wars and her existence will shift the balance of power across the world. But a bullet in the head will end her life, just like anybody else. Now she is a target for every foreign assassin and spy in England. When she meets a Healer called Tom she knows her life has changed for ever.
In an alternate 1860, this is an age of adventure and daring heroes. The British Empire is growing, assisted by the power of Military Magic, built on Isaac Newton's Laws of Magic. When enemies strike at Tom and Laura, they find themselves enlisted and sent to an academy of spies. But danger is waiting for them around every corner.
Read the sequel Scotland Hard , also available on Kindle.
The year is 1860, and the british empire has spread to cover around a quarter of the world thanks to it's class A spellbinders - gifted individuals who can change things by writting 'binds' on special paper with special ink.
Laura is sixteen, and a spellbinder, living with her parents in London. One day on the way home from school she comes across a dog, who she knows is really a boy. Helping him to break the bind and return to his true form, Laura and Tom become fast friends, which as it turns out is going to save both of their lives multiple times.
Following an assaination attempt, Laura is informed that the government have been watching her - she is actually a class A spellbinder, and thus extremely important to Britain. Tom and Laura are both then sent to a training facility for spies, hoping to help find the leak in the militarys department of magic, with only their skills as spellbinder and healer to help them. But with an unexpected visit from the prime minister and heir to the throne taking place, its not only their own lives that are in danger.
This book is fantastic. It's beautifully written, with none of the spelling mistakes so often found in kindle books, Laura and Tom are believable, loveable charaters, and the story has excellent pace and intrigue. Well worth the £3.30 price tag, and I will be looking out for the next installment. Scotland Hard (Book 2 in the Tom & Laura Series) A definite 9/10!
Alternate history of the nineteen century, the British Empire straddles three quarters of the globe, and has a monopoly of magic users to back their army. But they are always looking for more, but so are their enemies. Laura is a new A level mage, will she be sucked into the war machine or will the enemies kill her first. Loved this story, wonderful characters within a plot that moves along at a brisk pace, with magic, danger, and more than a touch of espionage.
