Did Not Finish
August 21, 2026If you stumble across a single other copy of this book rotting in a mice-and-mold infested basement somewhere, know that it is not worth the effort. I will give Mr. Pearl Zane Grey the benefit of the doubt that maybe, of the over 100 books he cranked out in his lifetime, this one was just especially a drag. Notably, of the 40+ movies that were based on his novels, “Madge’s Rancho” did not make the cut to Hollywood.
I am, for better or worse, too dogmatic to separate art from artist. That is an annoying way to say: I looked up some guy who was born 154 years ago.
His wife, Lina Elise Roth, was his editor, sales manager, and public relations agent. She was 17 when they met; he was 28. She gave up her teaching career to manage his. She raised their children. She encouraged him to give up dentistry to pursue writing. She invested in a bank and became its president during the Great Depression to support him financially. She edited and copied his manuscripts by hand. And she did all of this, at home, while he traveled the world on safaris and boats and hunting trips with his mistresses. If the prolonged existence of this crummy book by a crummy guy can bring any good to this world, I hope that good recognizes and remembers her.
