This is a great introduction to the most well-known bible stories, accompanied by beautiful art work created over the last thousand years from all over the world. There is historical information that helps flesh out the eras and maps that help you track the locations. There is a compendium of names in the back as well as useful appendixes. Probably the only draw back is the sheer size, the book is quite heavy because of the glossy magazine pages.

I bought this book--a new release then from B&N on cyber Monday 2012--for a whopping $26. A family member then brought it to me to Pakistan. You can appreciate the effort and cost involved.

Now why was I interested in the Bible, given that I am a traditional Muslim? Simple! I wanted to read the Bible, from a scholarly viewpoint and the illustrated coffee table version was going to make the reading a breeze. I was interested in the locales etc of the prophets, which are common to Islam. The teachings of the Bible were not my concern.

Lo and behold, I opened this book, this thanksgiving (2013) and was very disappointed. Although the timelines are there, and there are guesstimates of the locales of major events, which are covered in the Quran and the Bible, but the book is a very disturbing read.

Every major world religion--including Christianity-- forbids making graven images of God. This is so, because the Creator is above and beyond all created beings. Jesus' (peace be upon him) message was defeated and converted to Pauline Christianity, so that the Greco-Roman pagan religious tradition could continue, where gods were human and they fathered children.

Since the original message of Jesus (peace be upon him) was lost so people wrote stories with their own hands, attributing them to God and calling the text the Holy Bible. Some of those stories are vile, as they attribute deplorable behavior to prophets such as Lot and Noah.

To see all that being depicted in art, is very, very disturbing!!!

The Qur'an was revealed to guide humanity towards the truth, continuing the tradition of older prophets, whom God sent, such as Noah, Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them all).

Another massive and excellent book from DK. Each two page spread is about a separate Bible story or sometimes a place like Rome. The illustrations are fine reproductions of classic art that fit the topic. There are occasional time lines and many little inserts about side topics.

The writing is somewhat in depth without being overwhelming. Certainly deeper than I expected from a book of Bible stories. Clearly this book was written by folks who know the topic well. It is a long read so go in prepared to take your time and linger over each two-page spread.
