In a recent study, 76.8% of the students said they had been bullied. And 14% of those who were bullied said they experienced severe (bad) reactions to the abuse. It's time to take those bullies by the horns! Hi, my name is Kathy Noll and I wrote a self-help book for children, "Taking the Bully by the Horns." I'm trying to help children and young teens deal with bullies. So far, I've gotten great response from various school districts all over the U.S.! And even some in the U.K. and Australia. Principals, Guidance Counselors, Librarians, and Parents, all have shown a sincere interest in the book. Parent-Teacher Organizations, and various children's organizations have also given it wonderful support. The problem seems to be far spread. I interviewed kids who had been bullied, and myself, along with local psychologist and author, Dr. Jay Carter, came up with solutions to their problems. The book was written in a fun, relaxed manner, so that it would be interesting enough to get kids to read it. I've kept the tone light without losing the seriousness of the topic. This way young people will learn something without feeling like anybody is talking down to them. One chapter tells the victim that he's "ok" (self-esteem) and not the one with the problem. It also teaches him/her how to avoid certain situations, and how to get help. Another chapter asks the bully why he does what he does. Is he angry about something? Did someone hurt him in the past? He needs to feel better about himself in order to change, and to stop bullying. This self-help book explores different ways children and teenagers are bullied (both mentally and physically), how the bully becomes a bully, how the victim becomes a victim (sometimes there's a fine line between the two!), and what can be done about it.
Dr. Carter has made over 100 appearances on national television and radio in the USA, Canada, Australia, and United Kingdom (BBC-TV in London), including the "Larry King Show", and the "Montel Williams Show". He consulted with Reader's Digest for an article on "Mean People", and has consulted with the Oprah Winfrey Show. He has appeared in Oprah magazine and Cosmopolitan several times. He was a talk show host on Berks Community TV for four years.
Psychologist, Best Selling Author, Speaker, and Film Maker (awards for "Bipolar Light" and the "Bully Caterpillar" pilot film), Dr. Carter is a professional speaker doing seminars and workshops for organizations around the country. He is the author of the best selling book, "Nasty People", which has sold over one million copies in the USA and around the world. His new book is the "Complete Idiots Guide to Bipolar Disorder" via Alpha Books (Penguin Group)
Dr. Carter is a sought after speaker. He is a regular speaker for Cross Country Education (see web site link) where his audience are Social Workers, Counselors, Educators, Medical Doctors, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and Psychologists. "Taking the Bully by the Horns" by Kathy Noll with Dr. Jay Carter has won National Awards for "Saving Children's Lives, Making the World a Better Place, and Empowering Those in Need." This book covers the serious issues of bullying, school violence and low self-esteem. It is the children's version of Dr. Jay Carter's best-selling book, "Nasty People." For Educators, Parents & Kids --"Taking the Bully by the Horns" bolsters the self-respect of both the victims & the bullies, offering smart, empowering, proactive "BULLY" solutions.
Abstract: In a children's version of Dr. Jay Carter's best-selling book, Nasty People, Kathy Noll helps her young readers examine, identify and solve bullying problems. Easily broken down into digestible chapters, this book addresses the seriousness of the issue and offers proactive, often humorous, alternatives to the "bully cycle." ———————————————————————— Bullying can be a serious issue for children, with potentially devastating consequences. Taking The Bully By The Horns teaches children to effectively deal with bullying and helps them diffuse potentially explosive situations. Kathy Noll uses kid-friendly language to shed light on how cowardly bullies really are, and offers smart, empowering solutions for their victims.
Chapter I begins with descriptions of the kinds of bullies children typically encounter (mean, meaner and meanest), and quickly leads into Chapter II, which describes the types of games these bullies will play. Noll breaks down the reasons why bullies become mean, frequently reminding the reader not to let anyone take advantage of him or her.
Important topics touched on throughout the rest of the book include:
A quiz to see if you are a victim of bullying. How to identify if you are a bully. What to do when the bully is a family member. What to do when the bully is a "friend." Proactive ideas to stop bullies in their tracks. Solutions to solving the bully problem in your life. Peer pressure bullying (drinking, smoking, drugs).
Noll defines a bully as anyone who "does something against your will that causes you to feel bad," and cites a study that found 76.8 percent of students say they have been bullied. This book is a down-to-earth and humorous way to broach this often hurtful and embarrassing subject. The situations are true-to-life, and Noll does a wonderful job bolstering the self-respect of the victims. Children will certainly learn a lot from her positive writing and upbeat approaches to difficult situations, including specific tips on how to handle the many different types of bullying.
As a former teacher who recognized and struggled with the effects of bullying in the classroom, I saw firsthand that there is most definitely a need for Taking The Bully By The Horns. In addition to being a terrific tool for children, this book is a great parent resource for helping kids navigate their way through the often rocky waters of adolescent relationships, and teachers can use the lessons learned in it to maintain safe environments in their classrooms. The bullying examples in each chapter can easily be used in classroom role play, and teachers can use the information to teach and model specific appropriate behaviors.
Perhaps the best words Kathy Noll has to offer are, "Be good to each other." This simple advice, along with the mantra, "I'm special and proud of who I am," truly sum up the message she impresses upon her readers throughout the book. Follow her hints and suggestions, and you will gain the power to eliminate the bully worries in your life!
An essential, easily readable how-to book for anyone of any age who is beset by bullies, online or in the real world, psychological or physical. With the growth of Internet, and the ease it gives to cowardly bullies, intimidating and harassing people requires nothing more than a smart phone or a tablet. This book provides a handy guide for recognizing bullies, and what to do about them. Whether you're a child, a parent, a teacher, or just a concerned citizen, Taking the Bully by Horns should be read at least once. As I point out in New New Media, there is a dark side to our proliferation in communication. Taking the Bully by the Horns is a good preventative medicine and antidote.
