I was born in Surrey, England, in July 1976. My writing career kicked off at the age of thirteen, when I won an award in the WHSmith Young Writer Competition. As well as netting me a cheque for £40, my short story on vengeful ghosts and reincarnation was published in an anthology along with the works of thirty other major prizewinners - one of which included future Hollywood actress Kate Beckinsale.
At nineteen, I managed to get my first by-line in a national newspaper during a work experience placement at The Times. After reading History at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, I worked briefly as a journalist before moving into the world of high finance. Several years later, I finally decided to pursue my first love: writing. I currently live near Tower Bridge in London with my husband, Tom, and I'm hard at work on my second novel.
Predivna saga koja donosi priču o ambicioznoj Elizabeth, razmaženoj Amber i vanbračnoj Caitlin, kćerkama Williama Melvillea i nasljednicama modnog carstva Mellvill.
I loved the characters of all sisters. I couldnt tell you which one was my favourite out of Caitlin and Elizabeth, both were completely different characters but very likeable and you wanted them both to work things out and be happy. What I liked about this was how human the characters felt not just the sisters, but the other family members, the husbands etc. They all made mistakes, whether it was trusting the wrong person, or having an affair but it also showed how forgiving people can be. I wanted William to not be so naive and act like a proper dad to all of the girls, he was a bit of an *** at times but in the end he pulls through for them all and I ended up liking him too.
I really recommend this book if you like authors such as Louise Bagshawe, Tilly Bagshawe, Tasmina Perry and Olivia Darling.
This was a very enjoyable book and a good debut novel for this author, I will definately be reading more from this author in the future.
This was a really interesting novel. The author clearly took her time creating a very rich and complex world for the Melville family. It was really rich and in depth and the characters were fleshed out extremely well. It really was a pleasure to read this. 4 stars.
Adorei a autora
Originally, I picked this book up for a bit of light summer reading. However, parts of this book did not make me feel light and happy (what summer reading should do). Here's what you need to know:
1. Despite the cover this is not a "Gossip Girl" type book. 2. Somewhat surprising and interesting plot but if you think about it, you could probably guess it. 3. There are a ton of characters. 4. The characters are all interesting and unique. 5. There are some dark parts. 6. You definitely want to get to the end of the book to figure out what happens.
Overall: I bought this book at a major book sale. Not sure I would have picked it up otherwise, but it surprised me. Just read it and decide for yourself.
Daughters of Fortune is a sprawling saga about the two Melville sisters, Elizabeth and Amber, and their half-sister Caitlyn, born as a result of their father's infidelity. The novel covers decades of their lives, from childhood through to becoming strong, successful women.
This is going to be a gushing review. Sure, the book will never win the Pulitzer prize. It will never be held up as a literary classic. But, as an example of the bonkbuster/family saga genre, it is vastly superior to many of the offerings on the shelves.
Hyland writes with a real warmth for her subject matter - her characters jump into life in three dimensional fashion, not one of them without both flaws and virtues. I really cared about the three Melville girls - and I think my favourite was Elizabeth. Her particular journey from icy young socialite to businesswoman and then mother showed the strength in Hyland's writing - at times I hated Elizabeth, but I was always interested in finding out what would happen to her.
I have my quibbles. I felt that Caitlun reconciled a little too readily with her father; the whole storyline concerning Amber and her drug abuse could have easily been either extended or removed entirely - in its current form, I would far rather have read more about Elizabeth and Caitlyn, because I didn't really become invested in Amber's plight.
I will warn that there is sex in this book - it is more Jilly Cooper than Barbara Taylor Bradford - and there are a couple of shocking instances (including one scene of, essentially, rape, which made my jaw drop), but this is nothing that readers of bonkbusters won't have encountered before.
I was drawn into this tale - to the point that I didn't want to put it down for anything! I begrudged anything that took me away from reading, and felt constantly compelled to continue - the term "page turner" was coined for this book! The chapters were short and neat, though, which meant it was incredibly easy to pick up and put down where necessary.
Considering the size, I whipped through this in double quick time, devouring the tale of the Melville sisters voraciously. Hyland has penned an absolute gem of a novel, considering this was her debut: writing with confidence and a voice that grips immediately. I can't wait to tackle her next piece of work!
I believe this is a must-read. The story and writing are fast paced, wonderfully accomplished and each page involves you within the prose.
pros: -writing -caitlin -katie -elizabeth -Lucien - the plot
cons: -the only reason I did not give five stars was the fact that thr book does not prepare you for what happens at the beginning... it‘s not a fairytale.although it ends well, it is very realistic
So, I read Daughters of Fortune by Tara Hyland quite a while ago. My feelings about this novel are somewhat mixed. I can't say I disliked it, but I found it lacking in some ways. Well, the best way I can describe this feeling is by explaining the way I experience books in general. I tend to divide fiction in two categories, real literature and non-literature fiction writing. Literatury masterpieces are something I appreciate on basis of their own literary merit, so even if they don't touch me deeply (if they happen to also speak to me on a personal level I tend to fall in love with it). With fiction that is more for entertainment, I have lesser expectations but sometimes it happens that this kind of fictions also teaches me something and I would say that this was a case with this novel.
I don't only read classics and great works of literature, but it also doesn't make sense to me to compare some masterpiece with a page turner we will forget about as soon as we read it. This book is not a masterpiece and it has no aspirations to be one so must judge it for what it is. It is no fair to compare a novel that is supposed to be amusing and entertaining with a novel that is a great work of art.
If you're looking for a light right, this is a novel for you. It won't make you stay up wondering about the meaning of world or anything like that, it is not that kind of book. That being said, I can say I liked this book. I'm surely excluding this book from 'real literature' club I have in my mind and I will probably never read it again. Nevertheless, I don't mind the time spent reading it.
I did enjoy reading this book to some extent. Moreover, compared with similar novels that I've read, it is actually pretty good. The novel is quite badly written at times, but its story has definite potential. I can see that the author really put some effort into crafting the story and I do respect that. Moreover, the plot is very fast paced which is essentially what keeps it from being boring. It is a page turner. Descriptions of characters are terrible, they seem to be inserted by force, but characters themselves are potentially very intriguing, especially the leading ladies. I think there are even some life lessons that we can learn from this book and that especially applies to young ladies. I must say that I did feel a connection to the leading ladies (i.e 3 sisters) in this book.
What a shame that the stereotypes almost reduce them to caricatures at times! Fortunately, only at times. The characters do develop with time and often in a way that is quite realistic. Yes, they develop as the plot develops so despite the fact there seemed to be something stale about the description of characters, one can't say they're badly portrayed because they do evolve with the novel.
Daughters of Fortune are the key characters of this novel. I'm sure that it can be maintained that the protagonists of this novel are three sisters mentioned in the title. They are daughers of fortune in sense that they have a wealthy father, but they still need to fight for their own fortune. In fact, as often in life, their wealth doesn't really make their life easier. Each sister has a very hard time in life. Often the sisters have troubles realizing what the path ahead of them is and what their place in the world should be. In their own way, they are all quite troubled and lonely.
These three sisters are very different one from another and this is something Tara handled quite well. Each one of them seems quite unique. What is more, as the novel develops, the character developments can be strongly felt in the protagonists and that is something I quite liked.
The writer has a good imagination and I would dare to say she has a good instinct. It is very unfortunate she seems to lack writing skill. She can write, but not that brilliantly. However, I do think she may develop as a writer if she puts some more effort into it. I for one would take a chance and gave her another shot if and when she published the next one.
Back to this novel... On scale from one to five, I would give it two or three. If I were to judge it within is limitations, as such an enjoyable novel then I would say it is great. Here on goodreads where I must compare it will all the other books, I feel like I can't really give it a very high mark because 'it just doesn't feel like real literature'. Do you know what I mean?
It is a good novel, quite enjoyable to read but it lacks depth. One thing that sort of annoys me were the ever present stereotyes. This novel is full of stereotypes (from submissive Asian secretary to aggressive first born London heiress) and that is one thing I strongly dislike.
With a good editor, this novel could have been so much more, but it is what it is. In its own category, I would say it is pretty good, but it didn't make that jump from chic lit to real literature. Nevertheless, I did read it and with most chic lit, I would just read two first pages, roll my eyes and toss it away, so that is a recommendation! Yes, I do recommend it. It is a good novel to keep in mind if you want to be entertained not educated. I hope this author will find it in her to try to write on a higher level...we need more books like that.
This book was great, although tragic. I didn't know if I'd like it much because of the incredibly depressing start, but it turned out fine in the end and was a delight to read. The back cover synopsis explains that one of the sisters come into the world of the other sisters when she's older and not really accepted. The book chronicles the story from that point onward, through plenty of drama, tragedy, acceptance and eventually, family healing.
A sappy book this is not - there are plenty of horrible scenes to behold. A gang/date rape, and then the most disturbing scene of the book, where one of the women gets so into drug abuse and addiction she ends up prostituting herself, ends up being so out of it she wakes up to see a bloody baseball bat that's been used "there" on her. The author doesn't shy away at all from delicacies and dives straight into how dark things grow when lives gets twisted.
For a first book the writing style of the author was talented and confident. She gripped my readers brain as she led me through this the intricate story of the sisters and all involved with them at a personable and rapid pace, holding little back.
I loved the characters. All held warmth, positive traits and negative faults. Their three-dimensional lives almost jumped off the page. Elizabeth, Carolyn and Amber were all interesting - and completely different - paper people. The father could seem offstandish and he was completely devoted to his work; however, I really dug his character and how he handled things when they grew rough. I especially loved how he handled the blackmail photos when he walked in that door, awesome.
The ending wrapped it up in a worthy way, but with a bittersweet touch. While the book is like a fascinating soap opera you can't change the channel to, there are some minor flaws. For one there's a a decent amount of character swapping, and there's a lot of minor characters to keep up with as well. The books a little predictable and slightly fluffy without high enough substance to merit five stars, but it makes great reading, especially by the pool and for summertime.
If you dig family sagas, this one you need to read, especially if you're also a fan of chick lit.
This has been on my bookshelf for a long time and I kept putting off reading it but it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. Very easy to read but slightly lacking.
The Melville sisters might have money but does it always lead to happiness? Eldest daughter Elizabeth is determined to succeed in her family’s business, despite the fact her father and owner William Melville doesn’t seem to be very supportive of her plans. Elizabeth isn’t about to back down but is she one to work behind the scenes without the glory?
Amber isn’t blessed with the business brains of her sister, but has the looks to carry her through. Amber doesn’t have any plans to work for the family company but she’s decided that modelling is the career for her. She moves to LA without her family’s blessing and meets up with some bad boys and gets into things she knows she shouldn’t. Unfortunately for Amber, she doesn’t know a way out.
Finally, illegimate daughter Caitlin is still coming to terms with the death of her beloved mother when she’s sent to live with her father William and his family. Caitlin soon feels she doesn’t belong in the opulent world of the Melville’s and breaks free as soon as she can. She’s determined to make her own way in the world without using her family name, but is she going to get the success and recognition she’s always wanted? And what about the family too?
The gorgeous proof of Tara Hyland’s debut novel Daughters of Fortune landed on my doorstep a few weeks ago, and I was really curious to see what it was going to be like. It sounded very much in the vein of Tilly and Louise Bagshawe, Lulu Taylor and Olivia Darling, all authors that I love so I was pretty sure I was going to enjoy this book. I adore the gorgeous blue cover, and think it will really make it stand out in bookshops simply because it looks so elegant and the blue is just divine. Tara also revealed the American cover on her website, and we featured it in a Cover Wars post a while back, but I definitely prefer the UK cover! Anyway, back to the review.
It’s a huge chunk of a book at 400 pages, but I found these whizzed past quite fast because you can absorbed into the book very quickly. It begins with a look into the past at Caitlin’s mother Katie and how she was born. I was a bit surprised by this because I expected the action to begin with the 3 sisters quite quickly so it was nice for the author to take a different route. The book moves through a few time periods throughout the book so we can see the development of these characters throughout their lives from young teenagers to adult women working with the Melville company. Therefore, I was able to develop feelings for them and actually care about what happened to them.
Hyland creates the wonderful world of Melville really well, but doesn’t dwell too much on the shop side of things, rather choosing to focus on behind-the-scenes of the company and the personal life of the 3 girls.Caitlin seems to be the main character of the 3 as it is her feelings we encounter first of all, and she is the one that the sympathy of the reader is aimed at. As the book progresses, it moves onto a deeper look at the lives of Elizabeth and Amber, but I still found myself what Caitlin was up to! I liked how different the 3 sisters were, it made for 3 very different stories, and the way they weaved together towards the end was perfect.
Hyland’s writing is very easy to read, and progresses the story very well. She writes in the third person which is the most logical writing style due to the amount of main characters used. This allows Hyland to jump backwards and forwards between characters easily, and gives an overall cohesion to the book. This book is definitely a bonkbuster – there’s sex, drugs and a whole lot more besides, but I found it was done in a very tasteful way and wasn’t out of place in the book at all. The sex scenes were well written, and I didn’t cringe at them as I sometimes do so well done to Tara for writing these scenes well. The scenes with Amber were at times a tad awkward to read because of what is hinted at, but this is acceptable because of the plot around it, it doesn’t feel too gratuitous or out of place.
If you are fans of the Bagshawe sisters, Jo Rees or any of the other “bonkbuster” authors out there, then you’ll love Tara Hyland’s debut. It’s story sucks you in and keeps you hooked until the last page, and even then you’re not sure everything is going work out okay for the Melville family. There are characters to love and hate, storylines that you will love and it travels the globe too so there’s plenty in here to keep you going. It’s gorgeous cover will jump out at you and rightly so, it’s a superb read that I loved. Yes, it is long but don’t let that put you off, it needs each of those pages to make the story. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I think Tara Hyland will have a great career ahead of her if this book is anything to go by!
I am in love with this book. It was so amazing and delightful to watch the three daughters of William Melville grow and mature throughout their experiences. I loved that this book was from all three point of views. Caitlin is easily my favorite but I am also fond of Amber and Elizabeth.
Oh, Amber, I felt so bad for you when you were blind to see what Johnny was really doing. Amber was described as having platinum blond hair, angelic features, and the person you want to model for you. Wow, I am surprised. She earned so much in such short time.
Elizabeth-Headstrong, prideful, and organized. Ambitious, intelligent, and brilliant, I really wish I could be just like her. Letting nothing whatsoever bother me. EVER. And, she's gorgeous at the same time! I'm shocked that she actually married Cole. It never really was explained how she accepted his proposal and all that.
Caitlin. Who could be better fitted with you than Lucien? They both fit together almost in every way. Their careers, looks, attitude, everything. Wow! I really, really enjoyed reading about her designs and everything. Wow. It's too bad I can only picture them in my head. I would love to go see them in person.
I'm so glad to have read this book. Honestly it was well worth the time. I definitely would recommend it!
My views on this fluctuated. On the one hand it was as if reading a 1980s family saga of life and loves and on the other there was a great deal of gritty sexual activity described in detail and overlaid on these two was an almost Enid Blytonesque jolly hockey sticks vibe of school age superiority. Everyone either scores the winning six at the match or is the most stunning beauty, the most amazing dress designer, the most, the most, the most...it gets a more than a bit excessive. Ironically I liked the characters of Cole and Piers the most despite the book being about three sisters. Ultimately I stuck with it because it is a book club read and I wanted to do it justice but I doubt I'll select others by the author as I prefer something more akin to the final three chapters. The denouement was completely rushed and such a waste as the Lithuanian side story was brilliant and I would have loved more on that theme.
I am currently reading this book and I just can't put it down. There are many subjects covered in this book so far. It deals with family issues like divorce of parents, new step sisters. Also, loss of someone you truly love and care about like your mother. The struggle to abandon the previous life style to enter in a new, progressive, and truly different society. It is interesting to me so far to understand why and how people commit mistakes. The reason or the force that drives them toward these mistakes.
A bit shocking that this is a YA book. Very trashy and explicit. No redeeming characters to even make it worth following the so-called plot. I disliked all three sisters, and the male characters are all soo cliche. Storyline moves incredibly fast at times, so that you never really feel like you can get to know any of the sisters well enough to care what happens to them. Disappointed, because I really thought this one had potential.
At times too predictably unoriginal, at times interesting. With some longs parts, and unnecessary long gaps. Some characters need more "character" - like author wanted to put them in a box, or rather described them by cliché to avoid disambiguation. The whole story lacks of cohesiveness, like author felt the need to put everything she knows, and every theme she could think of in just one book... However, kept me up all night, which makes it one of the fastest books I've ever read.
This book was way too focused on sex. I was disgusted with the 2 drug induced rapes, and killing of a sex slave...not to mention the seduction of one daughter into drugs and porn. It was all too much. The only redeeming thing about it was how everything came together in the end. I wish my husband had picked a better book when I sent him to the book store.
