There is no mercy in the demon realm. No escape. In this place of desperation and conflict, anyone who is not purebred is virtually powerless. Until a blind priestess lays claim to a half-breed warrior, body and soul… Hunted and marked for death by Na’Reish demons for their half-blood heritage, the Na’Chi are searching for a new home—something an alliance offered by the human leader could provide. With both races divided by prejudice, when Light Blade rebels brutally attack the Na’Chi, the alliance seems doomed to fail.
Varian, leader of the Na’Chi, a hybrid race of gifted warriors, is cursed with the darker impulses of his demon heritage. Controlling the part of himself that craves the high of the battle is a struggle he’s afraid he’ll lose—until he meets Kymora Tayn, a priestess driven to serve her deity. While he’s unwilling to trust anyone outside his people, he finds himself drawn to Kymora’s strength and passionate nature, and discovers she has the power to calm the darkness inside him.
When the Na’Reish raid human territory for blood-slaves and kickstart the war, the key to the survival of both races—Na’Chi and human—is an alliance. However when Kymora is kidnapped, pitting human against human, Varian realizes he must embrace his darker half, not only to save the alliance…but also the woman he loves.
Kylie Griffin’s addiction to all things paranormal started at an early age when she imagined the jacaranda tree in her front yard was a spaceship or castle tower used to defend the world from hordes of invading enemies. Writing stories seemed like a natural extension.
By day she’s a primary school teacher but at night she writes paranormal romances for the Berkley Sensation line. She credits two wonderful English high school teachers, three writing organizations (RWAustralia, RWNew Zealand and RWAmerica), one supportive writing group (the BILD ladies) and the unlimited consumption of chocolate for her growth and success as a writer.
In her “spare” time Kylie’s a volunteer fire fighter, ambulance officer and member of the NSW State Emergency Service. She lives in a small rural village in outback New South Wales, Australia.

Okay, maybe a few more words than that. This book is awesome. It's fantasy-romance with fascinating world building and a great pair of leads that have real chemistry with each other as well as a hefty dose of respect. Don't expect any alpha bullshit from the hero, he's tormented, but he honestly respects Kymora and I loved that so much. As for Kymora, she may be blind, but she's not going to let that stop her from doing anything. I loved her attitude and the fact that when Varian tried to be all noble and push her away for her own good that she called him on it.
It's romance, first and foremost, with a really interesting world-plot behind it. I can't wait to see what is going to happen in this world, with a build-up toward a potentially devastating war between races. I also can't wait for book three, Allegiance Sworn, which features possibly my fave hero out of the series.
I enjoyed this book as much as the first one, if not more. I love a tortured hero. I just can't resist them. And Varian is so tortured! :( Poor guy.
It really pisses me off how the Na'Chi are obsessed with physical perfection and socially shun Varian because of his scar, even though he is their leader. Its so not fair. But thank goodness for Kymora! And not just because she is blind. She wouldn't have cared about his scar even if she could see it. She just loved him so much. She is just one of those people who can see the best in someone and never gives up on them no matter what.
And Varian is the same. He thinks only of his people. He would do anything for them, and nothing for himself. He always thinks of them first to the point of it being damaging to his health. Only when he realizes that he might hurt them if he continues neglecting his own well-being does he do something about it. But to be fair, it is only then that he finds out there is something he can do for himself. They are really a power couple. The leader of the Na'Chi and the spiritual leader of the humans. Varian's strength and leadership and Kymora's altruism and faith. I think together they could accomplish anything. I just wish we could have seen more of what they could become.
I also love the world that this book is set in. It has interesting dynamics and I am anxious to see what will happen next. Will they be able to find peace with the rebels and the Na'Reish? The comfort they have found in Sacred Lake is so delicate and there are so many hurdles left to jump before they can completely relax and be able to live their lives.
I also actually really like their deity . She seems nice. :P I love the scenes when she actually speaks to Kymora, and I am so glad that Kymora decided to go for it, and follow her heart and her Lady's path. Its very brave and I am excited to find out how this series will tie up. I really look forward to read Allegiance Sworn and what new things it will bring us. It should be a completely new and exciting experience to see things from a Na'Reishi's POV and I am really looking forward to it.
I enjoyed this book even more than the first in the series and I have to say I really liked what the author did with this book. The book continues with the same world and events continue to unfold from book 1 but this time the focus is on Varian and Kymora as a couple. I've read plenty of PNR books where different books in the series focus on different couples while being set in the same world. But this is the first time I'm reading it in high fantasy.
It was really enjoyable reading about Varian and Kymora... The strong, solitary leader of the Na'Chi and Kymora, the generous and giving Temple Elect. Both Varian and Kymora were people I really liked. I kept hoping that the two of them would grow to trust and love each other. I also kept hoping the humans would see past their fears and hatred and accept the Na'Chi among them. Things are far from resolved at the end of this book and I look forward to reading more about this world in the next one.
I was eager and excited to read this 2nd installment of the Light Blades and their new allies the Na'Chi... I knew this time I would be reading about Kymora and Varian and I hoped that I'd be as captivated as I was with Vengeance.
I adore Kymora and Varian is just something else and although the story of the two was exciting and sometimes a little breath-taking, I did find that I was hoping it would hurry along. I became a little frustrated at times and it took me quite a while to read this book compared to others I have read...
...However, this book is still worthy of 4 stars, it may not join book 1 on my favourite shelf but it was well written, the characters came to life in their surroundings and I did feel part of their world on occasions...
Confession time, I don't like the paranormal genre, or the romance genre, so you can imagine how I feel about paranormal romance. I picked up the first book in this series thinking it was fantasy. At that point I had the book, so I might as well give it a go. I did, and enjoyed the storyline and the characters.
Take out the romance and paranormal aspects and this would be an A+ all the way!
I decided to go for book 2 here and my husband laughed when he saw the cover. I stuck a paper wrap on the front cover so I couldn't see it. I'm not even joking. I had full on self-loathing every time I saw it, and needed to hide it. My friends even laughed about it because this is SO NOT my type of book.
The plot is VERY interesting, and the characters are gritty, and real, and full of depth. Personal niggle, I wish the Na'Reish weren't called demons because the vampire factor is creepy enough without calling them demons since demons means a certain thing to me. I also wish the smut wasn't in here. I know people who read PNR like it hot and steamy, but I don't really care for all of that.
This is definitely a character-driven book. The plot is good, but the characters and their battles are really the focus. The plot moves way too slow to carry the book by itself. I wish the focus had been on the romantic side of things for the two main characters and the healing process for the guy. Instead it felt like a sexual thing and that was so dominant the whole time it was hard to say what the characters were really attracted to at times.
Basically, if you like PNR, I think you'll love this. If you don't mind steamy and enjoy fantasy stories, you'll like this.
If you like things a bit cleaner or are not really into PNR, you'll probably not be into it or will come out with an okay feeling like I did. I'll read the next book, but I'm really not expecting anything different from what I've seen already. The plot and characters are interesting enough for me to skim the parts I'm not fond of.
If I could rate half stars, I'd say 3.5. I've sat on reviewing this for a couple of days to let the entire story simmer on my brain (plus I got distracted by a certain Netflix show).
In this installment we continue were the first one left off. The Na'Chi are living on the outskirts of Sacred Lake with a few Light Blades, some other humans and Kymora. This integration is to establish first steps with the newly formed alliance. However, not everyone is on board on either side. We still experience humans who reveled against Kalan and are causing destruction in the Na'Chi habitat.
Varian has always been socially distant from his own people because he has a scar on his face and that's considered a weakness. And then on the human side they're cautious because he has Na'Reish blood in his veins. Kymora is an enigma for him because she's blind and is strongly attracted to his personality. She often challenges him and he finds it equal parts frustrating and refreshing.
When rebels start attacking the Na'Chi village and Na'Chi start wanting to seek revenge without going through the proper justice channels, the alliance becomes hugely tested and this includes the bidding relationship with Varian and Kymora. They're two outcast peas on a pod where one focuses on weakness and the other focuses on turning weakness into strengths.
Majority of the story is on Kymora and Varian's head. I liked it at first but then it became a bit repetitive. They're romance was super awkward and I felt I got some good snippets of buildup only for the big time to be clumsy and anticlimactic. The last third of the book was also a little rushed for me and a bit predictable.
Overall, it was not as good as the first one but I knew that going in but I'm definitely looking forward to the third one because I'm told that one is fantastic.
Just as I enjoyed Vengeance Born, I found I couldn't put this one down either. Kylie, I love how you can get your readers to identify, empathise and sympathise with your characters. You even brought me to tears at one point - the mark of a good writer!
I love how the relationship between Kymora and Varian develops before finally blossoming into something special. The action sequences make the reader want to sit on the edge of their seat, eyes scanning the pages madly to see what will happen next.
I can't wait to see what happens with Arek in your next book!!
Alliance Forged by Kylie Griffin is the second book of her Light Blade series, and if you remember from my review of Vengeance Born, this is romance urban fantasy. Griffin does a masterful job of creating this worldbuilding, of Humans (Light Blade), Na’Reish (demons), and Na’Chi (half human/demons). The story picks up shortly after Vengeance Born left off, when Kalan, the Chosen of the Light Blade, forces his command of the Council and Soldiers, by allowing Na’Chi to be part of their alliance, and his commitment to Annika, a NaChi, as his mate. In order to win the ungoing war with the Na’Reish, the two sides need to join hands to work together to defeat the enemy.
But prejudice is still a big issue for many to accept the Na’Chi as friends. Alliance Forged is a dual story, showing how prejudice threatens to divide the Light Blade soldiers, with friends turning against each other. Those that are willing to work with the strong Na’Chi and those who refuse to accept them as allies. The other part is the romance between two unlikely pairings, but one that you saw the start of in Vengeance Born.
Kymora is Kalan’s sister, she is the priestess, the Temple Elect. Kymora, who is also blind, speaks for the Lady, who is the human’s deity. Kymora is such a wonderful character. She cares about others, and you marvel at how she can get around her blindness. She uses her gift, being able to sense aura’s and has worked to perfect that gift. Kymora believes she has a destiny that the Lady expects her to fulfill, and that is to bring the Na’Chi and Humans together to help save them all.
Varian is the leader of the Na’Chi. We met Varian in Vengeance Born, when he led his people to follow Annika and Kalan when they returned the Sacred Lake. That was when Varian and Kymora met, and soon thereafter, an uneasy alliance was born. In this book, Kymora is working with the Na’Chi to teach them how to live with humans, and help them. She befriends Varian, who isn’t an easy person to deal with. Varian takes it upon himself to protect his people, and half of his inner self is full demon, that he brings out during battles. Varian has a hard time keeping this dangerous angry part of him in control. He begins to realize that Kymora soothes his anger, and he finds unfamiliar feelings, he doesn’t know how to handle when he is around her. Kymora, finds herself content and happy around Varian, and she was very aggressive with him, trying to entice him to act on his feelings, until he could no longer resist. Varian has always believed he would never have someone love him; that his people respected him as a leader, but did not want to be his friend. This is an amazing love story, to watch Kymora break the shield around Varian, and how they both explored their growing love, something neither had experienced. Very nicely done, as I really enjoyed this romance, as it was totally different, and very nice to see.
The ending was very exciting with the rebels fighting the alliance taking things too far, bringing danger to their own people, and sides have to be chosen. The climatic ending is a race against time to save their own, and during this battle, Varian opens his heart to his true love. A great story, and wonderful ending. The battle is still on the horizon, with the humans/na’chi to possibly face the uncoming Na’reish demons. The third will be about Arek, who played a big part early on in this book, and in the first one. I already cannot wait for his story, and to find out what will happen to him, as well as the war upcoming. Great story by Kylie Griffin.
Why did I read this book? I'm participating in fun game for Bookworms hosted by SOS group. The game si called 'Fantasyland' and I'm part of team #2 called: 2 Read or Not 2 Read. Task for this week was to read a book with green cover. I picked Alliance Forged since I was in a mood for light fantasy with a dash of romance (also the cover is green lol).
My thoughts: I read first book in 'The Light Blades' series last year and the best thing about Vengeance Born was beautiful cover. Before abandoning 'The Light Blades' series, I decided to give it another chance by reading Alliance Forged. So here is my second attempt to visit the world of The Light Blades (human warriors) and Na'Reish (vampires blood-drinking evil demons). Sadly, the problems from the first book are all still here. No world building whatsoever. Focus of the story is romance between Varian (half-human half-demon) and Kymora (Temple elect - kind of main temple priestess). And that romance advances so slowly... Frankly, first 60% of the book are simply boring with Varian thinking and obsessing about his problems and reasons why they should not be together and Kymora trying to advance their relationship. To make it even worse, Kymora is prone to religious statements about hope, belief etc. This sounds inspirational the first time, but by the tenth time she says 'Let the Lady guide you' or something similar I just wanted to DNF this book. Last 30-40% of book were less boring with a lot more action and finally some advance on romance level. But still, this was not enough for me to forget how this book almost bored me to death. And after such a slow start the ending seemed rushed when million things happened in last two chapters.
My rating: 2.5 stars
Will I be reading next book in series? No. This series is definitely not for me.
I recommend this book to fans of: paranormal romance fans who want to try out fantasy genre and like slow character-driven romance plots.
Let me start by saying the wait for this book has been torturous! Ever since I read the first installment of The Light Blade series - Vengeance Born back in February, I have had Alliance Forged on my need-to-get list and not just because the cover is HOT!
Kylie Griffin has a talent for sucking the reader in. By page 3, I was engrossed, and by page 13, I had informed my family that I was out of bounds for the rest of the night! I was immediately pulled back into this unique and gripping world of humans (Light Blades), Na’Reish (demons), and Na’Chi (half human/half demon hybrids), and greedily devoured Varian Alliance Forged in one sitting.
Awesome story, great characters that easily worm their way into your heart, sweet and sexy romance that will leave you breathless, and enough prejudice between the races to spark a revolt; setting the scene for a war that you know is going to go off!
I can honestly say that this book is another for the keeper shelf, and I already have a spot reserved for book 3 - Allegiance Sworn, although its another long wait with the publication date set for April 2nd 2013 *oh the pain of waiting!*
Kylie Griffin has again presented a solidly written, intensely emotional story that I am happy to say I loved, a lot! Another 5 Star read from one of my favourite authors ~<;]
Ah... back to the Light Blade world... What a pleasure. In this latest installment of Kylie Griffin's Light Blade series, we get the story that was greatly hinted at in the first book, Vengeance Born. This is the story of the Na'Chi warrior Varian and the human priestess Kymora. This is one of the more unique stories I've read in a while. Throughout the book, typical romance story troupes are avoided left and right. For that, it gets a big plus!
Kymora is the blind head priestess of the human religion. When her brother falls in love with the Na'Chi woman Annika, Kymora gets a message from the Lady that she must do her best to forge the alliance between the Na'Chi and the humans. Into this atmosphere enters Varian. He is the leader of the Na'Chi, the half human, half demon outcasts from the demon world. After having spent his life in hiding or on the run, he and his people are wary and untrusting. It will be up to Kymora to bridge the gap between the two groups.
The challenge and fortitude for the alliance between human and Na'Chi continued as struggles from all directions bombarded. Tested at every facet, from who to trust, who to fight and who to love...and was one worthy of such devotion.
The aching truth of prejudice embedded and shunned throughout Varian's life. Leader he was but loved and self-worth were unfathomable. And so life was cold, schematic and uninspired...until Kymora forced her way into his life and she didn't take no for an answer. I loved the colorful characters full of life, wit, emotion and heart.
The plot kept me on the edge of my seat...or more like kept me up all night until finished so I can start the 3rd book of this exciting series. As with any second read, the foundation and complexity of the storyline were established but Ms. Griffin's storytelling compelled and poured such vivid emotion to every scenarios, you couldn't help but be enthralled and pulled into her world.
3.5* The biggest issue I had with this book was the pacing. The first half is slow and it was way too easy to get distracted and put it down. The last half was much better. I was very frustrated with Varian and how long it took him to fully trust and accept Kymora. I do like the underlying story and will see where this goes in book 3, Allegiance Sworn.
I haven't gotten so pulled into a series since I picked up my first Black Jewels book by Anne Bishop. Having to wait until 2013 for book three is going to be torment. I can't wait to read Arek's story.
Rebel Light Blades (gifted humans) attack the fledgling settlement the Na'Chi (human/demon hybrid) and humans are building at the behest of a disgraced council leader Davyn who is still grieving over his daughter. This entire review and others can be found at: http://www.ireadthatbook.com
A very enjoyable fantasy romance. This will be one series I will continue to follow. Griffin has constructed an intriguing world, and populated it with some great characters. I look forward to reading more in this series.
For the Na’Chi-half human/half demon, living among the humans now has caused tension and dissension. For Varian, leader of the Na’Chi, life isn’t as smooth as he anticipated when they sought sanctuary with the humans. For prejudice continues and rebellion brews, Varian finds that to survive the coming days as well as have the peace he always thought would elude him, he must do the impossible: embrace the dark heritage of his demon side in order to keep the fragile alliance between Na’Chi and humans in force. He just never anticipated falling in love with the beautiful Kymora Tayn, a Priestess who steals his heart, while she calms the darkness inside him.
But when humans kidnap Kymora and cause the alliance to falter, Varian will have to do the impossible in order to save Kymora as well as the alliance- embrace his darker half.
ALLIANCE FORGED is a stunning continuation from the first book, Vengeance Born, and picks up right after that one ended. This time the reader is thrust in the aftereffects of the alliance between Na’Chi and humans as prejudice, rebellion and hatred rear its heads all around them. I got to admit this author’s world building is just phenomenal. The intricate society of demons, humans and half-breeds is exceptionally detailed and the author does a masterful job in keeping the reader glued to the pages. The characters are also exceptionally vivid. They are multi-dimensional, showing their vulnerability as well as their strengths that just delighted me while I read ALLIANCE FORGED. The author does a great job in capturing their struggles as they try to overcome insurmountable odds and achieve the peace they want/need.
ALLIANCE FORGED is not just Kymora and Varian’s story but also the continuation of the struggles humans and Na’Chi’s faced after finding out that the Na’Chi exsisted and are not myths like the humans believed. I loved the in-depth look at why Varian acted the way he did and how he was able to let his guard down with Kymora and a few chosen friends he trusts. The struggle this character has through book one and now book two is just heartbreaking. I was heartbroken at some of the revelations of his past and loved how Kymora soothed him and his demon side. Kymora may be a priestess and blind but she can see aura’s and ones heart and with Varian she found a man who needed her in ways that had her longing for more. The sparks flew when we met these two in Vengeance Born and in ALLIANCE FORGED; the reader is treated to their romance amid kidnappings, rebellion, fighting and more. I loved these two together and found that Varian brought something out of Kymora and vice versa. Both were the other’s part of their heart/soul and I loved how soothed Varian was when he was with Kymora. It was a side many didn’t see in the Na’Chi. All the characters are well written and I loved some of the plot twists that had me biting my nails in anticipation.
ALLIANCE FORGED is a wild ride from start to finish and if you enjoy a fast paced paranormal romance than this is one book you don’t want to miss. I do caution that there are some sexy scenes that will curl your toes and you do need to read book one, Vengeance Born, to understand the back storyline that is mentioned a few times in book two. Overall, this was one series I am eager to see where the author goes next. We got some hints at what is to come so be prepared for another spellbound ride in the light blade series.
This is an objective review and not an endorsement
I will start with the things I enjoyed. I loved the cover. He’s hot and badass looking.Absolutely love the spots. I love the names – Kymora, Rystin, Rissa.
Now onto what I didn’t enjoy. Okay, so Kymora is blind. It’s an important thing to note. Twenty two times in a novel is a little much. Especially because she’s get repetitive about at random. On one page near the beginning, ‘blind’ ‘disability’ etc was mentioned six times. SIX. On ONE page. That’s ridiculous. Yet in the last 200 pages, not a word about it.
Alliance Forged is part of a series. I have not read the previous one and this book was capable of standing on it’s own. However, when you at random on page 62 write “don’t you want our friendship to evolve into something more?” seems a little rushed, even taking into consideration that more probably happened between them in the previous book. And the first probably ten chapters took place within two days. Then later on page 260 something she writes that Kymora doesn’t want to rush with Varian. Yeah… No idea either.
Random thing that has nothing to do with plot but bothers me is that Varian is capable of growing stubble. Okay, that’s cool. I like stubble. It adds to his appeal. But the Na’Chi don’t grow pubic hair (yes, that was actually written). There are a few nationalities in our world that can’t grow facial hair, but ever race gets it below the belt. I mean I personally find the stubble but nothing lower to be attractive but it seems so out of place.
The back of the book states Kymora gets kidnapped and such. SPOILER ALERT! It happens literally in the last five chapters. Two thirds of the book is filler. A few chapters in the beginning, and the bit at the end advance the plot. Very few things in between there advance the story.
Kymora’s brother gets hurt really at one point. In fact, Varian notes that there are probably a few broken ribs. Less than a week later, Kymora is elbowing her brother in the ribs…?
This book was terrible. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. The only reason I even kept reading was because I was keeping a tally of how often Ms. Griffin called attention to Kymora’s blindness. I get having characters with disabilities and I understand the need to want them to achieve great things despite that. But stop dwelling on that detail! I find it very disrespectful to the character. She could’ve been so much more than a blind priestess.
Those two qualities MADE her. I found the book to be very preachy. Yes, her goddess is important because she’s a priestess, but you don’t need to preach every chapter. And when this goddess does make an “appearance” don’t use all capitals during the discussion.
“Forgive my audacity, Lady. I didn’t mean for my question to upset you-”
“BE AT EASE. YOUR QUESTION DID NOT OFFEND ME.”
That was a couple lines in the book that I typed out exactly as I saw it. I couldn’t help but laugh because of how ridiculous it sounded. Capitals like that are a way to show yelling. Italics would’ve worked much better and have been taken much more seriously.
All in all, I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone and it wasn’t really worth the two bucks I spent on it.
I was a little disappointed by this book; I'm not going to beat around the bush. Vengeance Born was such a strong start to The Light Blade series that my expectations for book 2 were perhaps a tad high. The first novel has an even split between action and romance while as this second installment is heavy on the latter with next to no action. Maybe it's my own fault; this series is shelved as Fantasy / Paranormal Romance after all. Perhaps I was just spoiled when it came to the first book. That being said, Alliance Forged still has a lot going for it including colourful characters, a mushy love story and it also offers further insight into Kylie Griffin' demons which I enjoy.
Kymora is the head of her order, a pure soul and blind but when she sets her sights on Varian there's no deterring her. She knows what she wants and by god she's going to get it! I couldn't get over how aggressive she is in her pursuit of Varian! I would have thought that her disability would make her more hesitant. Making the first move is hard enough but doubly so when you're vision impaired. However, I guess this goes to show that Kymora has overcome her handicap and doesn't let it dictate her actions. I admire her for that.
Varian hasn't been as lucky. He hates his Na’Chi half with a passion and tries to ignore that part of himself as much as possible. His demon genes are helpful in battle but that's about it; Varian views his heritage as a curse. He and Kymora aren't as different as he thinks. She may not have Na’Reish blood but she knows a thing or two about overcoming obstacles and learning how to accept oneself. The Na’Chi leader also can't seem to grasp how someone as pure as Kymora could ever want to be with someone like him. She's the light to his dark.
Varian and Kymora both have obstacles to overcome before they can even consider starting a romantic relationship. The back-and-forth between these two pretty much makes up the entire book. Granted, their tale is moving but it doesn't exactly make for a riveting read. The pacing in Alliance Forged is on the slow side and other than a few small skirmishes and some light political intrigue, not much happens in this book. The back blurb is definitely deceiving in that respect. It basically summarizes a couple of chapters towards the end (the more interesting ones). The other 300 pages are about Kymora and Varian's budding romance.
Alliance Forged is a heartwarming tale about overcoming one's inner demons, battling prejudice and finding love in unlikely places. This installment didn't live-up to Vengeance Born but The Light Blade series still has more to offer with Allegiance Sworn scheduled for release in April 2013.
I love the world that Kylie Griffin has created and I was happy to return to it with this book. The first book ended with the alliance being formed and a lot of people supporting Kalan and Annika but this book brings in those who aren’t content and do not trust the Na’Chi. A lifetime of distrust and fear can’t be swept under the rug and I appreciate that Griffin is aware of that. I’m actually really happy that there’s unrest over the human/Na’Chi alliance because that’s how things would really be.
I was hoping for more romance or a better developed romance in this one. Most of the story is focused on the fantasy side which I don’t mind because it’s an interesting world. But I felt like we didn't see enough of Kymora and Varian’s developing relationship to warrant their feelings by the end. Of course they met in the previous book and are friends for several months before they become more but it just felt a little fast.
Kymora’s faith is tested in this book but for the most part she’s too much of a believer in the Lady to go too far off the rails. Her compassion, devotion, and hard held beliefs make her a bit stubborn but a very likable character. Varian on the other hand struggles throughout with controlling his Na’Reish side and letting Kymora past his walls. Varian has done everything he can to protect his people but he doesn’t trust easily and he’s isolated himself. He keeps pushing Kymora away but she won’t let him separate himself. I liked that this book brought to light the darker side of the Na’Chi but also what it means to embrace both halves and learn to accept both sides.
I wish it was clearer what age the characters are because it would make it easier to understand why they act the way they do. I think Kymora and Varian are in their late 20’s but it’s never stated. I have no idea how old some of the side characters, like Lisella and Zaune, are.
Totally enjoyed this fantasy tale of two races trying to live in harmony together. There are prejudices that threaten to fracture the unsteady alliance between the humans and the Na'Chi (half human, half demons). High Priestess, Kymora works tirelessly with the leader of the Na'Chi, Varian to try and prevent this from happening. Their attraction to each other and their growing relationship both helps and hinders this.
A complex story full of emotion, including fear, love, trust and betrayal. It is woven expertly by the author and you can feel the desperation of the characters for this alliance to work.
Disclaimer: While I know the author personally, this doesn't affect the star rating.
Very good book. A good sequel, nicely paced and intriguing plot. The reason. I gave it four stars instead of five is that I've decided to be a little tougher on my rating and while I really liked the book, I didn't loved it as much I did the first one. One of the things I loved best about the first one was the willingness of the main couple to be together. But Varian fought through most of the book against his feelings for Kymora. I understand why, his past shaped him and trusting anyone can like him, let alone love is hard. But the whole one step forward two steps back got a little frustrating. Still very good book and I recommend it. Looking forward to the next one.
A fantasy romance about faith, trust, being honest with your emotions, and risking everything to follow your heart. The plot is a little slow-paced, and most of the relationship is Kymora reaching out (she is blind, which is unusual) and Varian pushing her away.
I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO READING VARIAN AND KYMORA'S STORY BUT WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED WHEN THEIR RELATIONSHIP WASN'T AS HARD WON AS IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN.
OUR HERO is a proud and scarred Na'Chi, so naturally I would assume he would have a hard time accepting softer emotions like falling in love with a human. He's fiercely protective of his kind, and those he care about will never want for nothing. Yet, while he appreciate Kymora's friendship, he doesn't want or need her love but the heart wants what it wants. Its not that Varian didnt deny his feelings, but the way he kept pushing Kymora away was a little tiring. I barely see him fight for their love, its like Kymora does all the work instead.
OUR HEROINE is a Temple Elect, a priestess to the Goddess they worship and its time for her to follow her destiny and its no other than Varian. Kymora is a strong willed woman who goes for what she wants and also very perceptive, seeing as how she is blind, her other senses are honed like a blade. Basically this second book focuses on the start of a new way of life for the humans and Na'Chi who have been granted sanctuary.
OVERALL while this was a nice continuation to the Na'Chi's story, I just wished that Varian and Kymora's story was as amazing as Kalan and Annika, but while it was highstrung at first...it started dwindling halfway through.
I was so excited to read about Varian and Kymora that I bought this book right away and started reading. However, I was a little disappointed by the direction Griffin chose to go...I didn't feel the wholesomeness and connection that I felt with Kalan and Annika, or even between Kymora and Varian during the first novel. It become much more about the sexual tension, Varian's demons (pun intended) and lots and lots of stubbornness. I would say the conformity to the romance genre was even stronger in this second book of the series, but less of an asset than it was for its predecessor.
Overall though, a very enjoyable novel that again address racism, violence, and war in a real, though sensitive way. While possibly triggering for some, Griffin works her magic once again in refusing to tiptoe around the violence people are capable of, while understanding that lurid details are not necessarily what is needed to convey trauma.
Kymora hovers on the verge of being inspirationally blind, but has enough honestly human flaws and frustrations to offset it. I will always appreciate the direct honesty of the premise, that no matter how necessary it is to band together against a greater evil, there will always be people who would rather complain and cling to old prejudices, and it will always take a lot of work.
Varian, the leader of the Na'Chi (the human-demon hybrid race) has a lot on his plate with trying to make the alliance with the humans work. He's also always been a loner. So it was nice seeing him lose his heart to Kymora. Thank God for him Kymora was stubborn and wouldn't take no for an answer.
