Cinderella and Zombies

Rate this book
Cinders has saved the Royal City before, but the zombie outbreak is getting worse. The streets are full of refugees, the hospital tents are packed with the injured, and the royal guards are complete morons when it comes to dealing with the infected. In this version of the classic fairy tale, Cinderella goes from being a pretty-faced pushover to being the best zombie-slayer in the kingdom. But will that be enough when she's decked out in a ball gown and glass slippers?

I'm a writer from Tallahassee who chases three crazy kids around the house all day before collapsing in front of my computer.

I write everything from fairy tales to zombies, whatever's exciting to me. (The muse likes to bounce around.)

Other little tid-bits: I'm a dog person (I have a German Shepherd named Guybrush), I like to run (most of the time) and majored in Psychology (which explains why I'm a little nuts) with a minor in English (which explains the whole writing thing).

Zombies are one of my favorite pastimes. I needed to clear my head before a round of edits so I tried this book. It’s about zombies and it is a quick read of 70 pages or so.

The Cinderella theme bothered me and I wasn’t sure how the author would fit it into the zombie arena. I was impressed. The book opens to Cinderella carrying out household tasks. Only there is a slight twist. Yes, she does do housework, she also has a garden she takes care of, not to mention her routine zombie checking of travelers entering the kingdom. Yes, this is a different Cinderella story.

What I liked: Cinderella is a knife-wielding zombie killer. I love a woman who can throw knives. No one has a better aim than her. She is sensible and well mannered, but will challenge authority to make her point. She views the citizens of the kingdom as hers and will sacrifice her life for theirs. She doesn’t crave attention, instead, hides from it. And yes, there is a glass slipper scene where the handsome prince will marry its owner. Cinderella hides and doesn’t come forward. She craves safety for the people, not attention for herself.

What I didn’t like: this was a short story that could have been explored more. When I reached the end, I wanted more.

Note: at the end is a bonus, the Cinderella story.
I loved this story and would recommend it to anyone looking for a short read. The author was able to weave her magic yet stay true to the original with interesting twists.

Indie Author Review #1 –
Cinderella & Zombies by Emily Casey:

Cinderella & Zombies is a 34 chapter novella by the author, Emily Casey. It’s pretty much what it says on the tin: Cinderella meets the hordes of the undead. Insane? Yes. Bad? Actually…no.
Taking the traditional tale of Cinderella we meet Cinders (nickname for the main heroine), but instead of being made to work like a slave for her step-mother and step-sisters, she is one of the few city-folk helping out and battling the zombie outbreak. A plague/virus has descended upon the land of Fae, transforming citizens who were unfortunate enough to be bitten into flesh hungry zombies. The king of Fae decides however that during the crisis would be a perfect time to hold a ball and find his son, Prince Kent, a bride?!?!?!
This is a fun retelling of the classic tale that moves along at a good speed. The action his high paced as you would expect from a story about fighting zombies, and the odd spark of humour is thrown in here and there.
It’s also nice to have a female character that is actually a strong female role model, and not one that is hinted at being one. For once we have a character that is compassionate, smart and courageous. More often than not we have female characters who are supposed to not be your typical ‘damsal in distress’, yet when push comes to shove they’re nothing more than a disappointment of the characters you were promised to get.
Another thing I appreciated was the development of Cinderella and Prince Kent’s relationship. Being a novella, it was relatively quick, but, at least we had something that drew the couple together in their bond. We read a growing appreciation for each other and affection for each other as they fought to save the city from the zombie apocalypse. It makes a refreshing change from reading about two people just randomly falling in love for no good reason and being tortured with sappy chapters containing no real plot.
However, some zombie enthusiasts may grind their teeth at some of the mythology in this story. In Cinderella & Zombies, vegetables are able to harm the zombies and potentially kill them. I have to admit, it is a first I’ve ever come across such an idea and it took me a while to accept it.
I can see where many people would find this idea absurd, but this isn’t the first time where supernatural mythology has been altered for the sake of a story. Yet at times this can work if it is done tactfully and works within the plot. Many times we see mythologies altered for no other reason than to clap along like a giddy fan and swoon over how wonderful the creature is.
At least Emily Casey uses her idea of zombies being severely allergic to vegetables as an integral part of her plot and uses it to bind together the story of Cinderella & Zombies. It’s because of such reasons I am willing to forgive such an idea because it was used and used well; plus, I found it funny fending off a zombie with overripe tomatoes.
On the whole, Cinderella & Zombies is a fun and quirky idea that is well written and with good character development. Though it had a couple of things I would criticise, they are nothing that majorly detracts from the story. If you are the type of person who like their classic stories with a twist then Cinderella & Zombies is worth a read.
Good Points:
• Well written.
• Some good ideas.
• Good plot development and well-paced.
• Good character and relationship development.
• Fun!
Bad Points:
• Zombie elitists might not like the vegetable idea

This was such a fun read! If you love zombies, get ready to dig in! If you love fairytale retellings... beware of ravaging hordes of the undead wreaking havoc with the prince's royal ball! I, myself, love both zombies and fairytales, and I felt this was a perfect combination of both.
Emily begins her tale in the Kingdom of Fae, alternating between Prince Kent and Cinderella, both swearing to protect their people from the undead plague. Although reluctant to join forces at first, together they become an unstoppable zombie killing machine.
The story moved with an unbelievably fast pace, not a single page without zombies. Throw in an inept king, an unconventional godmother of sorts (if she's from the land of Fae, does that make her a "fairy" godmother?), some slicing and dicing, with just a dash of rot and ruin, and I discovered a tale of true love and putrefaction.
Note for survivors: Who knew that a healthy diet of vegetables could protect you, not just from malnutrition, but from those pesky walking corpses! I don't know about you, but I'm headed to the grocery story to stock up for the zombie apocalypse!!

Let me just say that Emily Casey has such a wonderful talent for taking fairy tales and making them all her own and she has definitely done it again with Cinderella and Zombies. This Novella really packs some thrills and excitement for any Zombie and Fairy Tale reading enthusiast.

Cinders, a zombie killing heroine, who not only can pull off killing zombies with some really kick-butt knife throwing but do it with such skill and accuracy even while wearing a beautiful blue ball gown with some majorly high stiletto glass slippers .

Prince Kent, a man who recently has been ordered by his father to marry a zombie killer, now must play an unwanted host to a Zombie Killer Audition rather than out protecting his kingdom from this zombie invasion.

What a fantastic read!

This is a delightful "zombiefied" version of the fairy tale with some interesting, very clever twists of its own. And, no, it is not your typical mash-up.... It is, however, a quick, fun and entertaining read.

The author has managed to be true to both the zombie and fairy tale genres at the same time, managing to give us both a strong female protagonist *and* a happy ever after ending! Loved it!

I’ve always loved the fairytale of Cinderella. I mean, every girl wants to be swept off her feet by a prince, right? Well, this girl just happens to be really good at killing zombies. And so is the prince.

Prince Kent loves to fight. He loves to help his people and be at the front lines, defending his kingdom. His father, on the other hand, wants to keep him safe and sound inside the palace walls. He also wants Kent to gent married. Immediately. When a gathering of the kingdom’s eligible women turns into a bloody war against the attacking zombies, Cinderella may be the only one that can save the day. She knows how to kill zombies and she has done so before. Cinderella and Prince Kent must team up to save the kingdom and the day.

Hands down, the best part of Cinderella and Zombies was the heroine, Cinderella. She doesn’t really care what other people think of her and she is not afraid to stand out of a crowd. She was strong and killed a zombie even when a soldier wouldn’t. He weapon of choice is the throwing knife and she has awesome aim. I mean AWESOME. But she can also use other things to kill zombies, such as a glass slipper. She was an amazing heroine that I thoroughly enjoyed reading about. Prince Kent was also an entertaining character because he really cared about his people and he was incredibly brave, so that makes him all right in my book. He’s also a prince, so that’s a plus too.

I really, really loved this rendition of Cinderella because I love zombies and Cinderella is a strong individual with larger problems than getting a prince to marry her. Also, in this book, Cinderella’s family wasn’t mean towards her, which is not traditional, but I liked it much better.
If you’re looking for a fun, fast read, I would definitely recommend this book. It had action, a great heroine, and a dash of romance. Amazing!

This story was kick ass. I really liked it. So far, I have been very lucky with fairy tale re-tellings, with or without the zombie factor.

Cinderella was definitely NOT a pushover in this story. She was a hard fighter from the very beginning. When the kingdom is under threat, she doesn't shy away from doing what she needs to do to help save it. She was even slightly arrogant about it, which made me laugh. Even the Prince was beneath her, at least in the beginning when her perception of him was that he was cowardly. But that if far from the truth. He is brave, if a little reckless. His so-called weakness is his father, King Richard, who isn't willing to have his son killed, or worse, as he needs his heir. If anything, the King is the simpering fool and I had an urge to reach into the book and slap him a few times.

I thought the whole idea of the poisonous effect of vegetables on the zombies to be really original, and at times comical. That pumpkin carriage scene was fabulous.

This story was full of action, comedic moments, and great characters. I can't believe it was only 73 pages! It felt like it was such a full story. Highly recommend this one. It was incredibly fun.

This is not your typical Cinderella story (and I mean that in a good way)! In this novella, Cinderella meets her Prince Charming while she is in the process of defending the kingdom from zombies. No meek and mild Cinderella here! I really enjoyed this characterization of Cinderella. She is strong willed and believes it is her duty to protect her kingdom and the people in it. And boy does she, utilizing some very inventive techniques. I'm a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, and Cinderella comes across to me as the Buffy of zombie killers. Similar attitude, similar industriousness. (I could even see this becoming a fun series where Cinderella is faced with various supernatural challenges from story to story.) Then we have the prince. Kept out of action by the king who is afraid his son will be killed by zombies, Prince Kent is frustrated that he isn't able to fight the zombie hordes and defend his people. Circumstances eventually arise that allow him to prove that he is just as strong of heart as our heroine. How the two meet and their initial perceptions of one another are quite humorous. In fact, there was a lot of humor laced throughout the entire story. This was a fun, light read that I highly recommend.

I loved this quirky take on Cinderella. I was a little worried that it would be like pride and predujice and zombies. But it wasn't. This was unique re-telling of Cinderella's story. She is no longer a girl that we should feel sorry for. Cinderella is tough, skilled and smart. She knows everything there is to know about the undead. Think for Resident Evil than Disney when you picture this heroine. I strongly recommend this short zombie story to fans of the genre. It was fun!

The good:
The writing is entertaining and never dull. Emily Casey did a good job of giving the reader the right amount of information in this novella.
Cinderella is just the right amount of kickass without being over the top.
The Prince is not just a pretty face either and matures quite a bit in a short amount of time.
The zombies are awesome. They are allergic to fresh vegetables. Not sure about fruit before. I have never encountered this weakness in zombies before.

The bad:
It was short.
The action scenes are a little scattered but were still entertaining.
I missed the evil step mother.

This novella was totally fun! The author sure did a good job of mixing of Cinderella with loads of gory zombies, all the while following the plot of the fairytale without making it seem awkward or constructed. I loved how the pumpkin got a very special purpose in the fight against the zombie plague and the first vegetable scene really made me laugh out loud.

A minor drawback were some very abrupt passages, which could have been presented more smoothly. E.g. the declaration of the king that his son must marry a zombie slayer came out of nowhere and could have been more elaborate. Other than that, I very much enjoyed reading Cinderella and Zombies.

I loved this slightly twisted version of Cinderella. The only drawback was that it was rather short (but since it wasn't expensive, I'm not complaining). As a kid, I never had much sympathy for Cinderella's suffering. I always thought, "Why doesn't she go out and DO something?"
Well, in this story, she does. She's very active, opinionated, quick on the uptake -- just like a heroine should be. This Cinderella won't wait for her fairy godmother to set things right without being prepared to do her part properly -- even if it means slaying myriads of Zombies. ;-)

Humorous, action-packed Cinderella's retelling with zombies. If you liked Pride and Prejudice and Zombies or if it was too long for you ( as it was in my case ) try this book, its novella, fast and fun read.
I totally loved that Cinders shoes, dress and pumpkin helped her not only get her a prince but also killed zombies and saved the day.

This novella was a quick and easy read. It had an interesting, creative take on a classic fairy tale. In this story, Cinderella was not abused by her stepmother and stepsisters but she seemed to be the only responsible adult in the household. I loved that she was a strong, female character and SHE was the zombie slayer. I would have enjoyed a little more blood and gore but, all in all, it was a fun read. I look forward to reading more from this author.

In my opinion this was a very fun, creative story with an interesting perspective on the zombie genre. The combination of a Cinderella type character set in a medieval period plagued with zombies worked great. If I could give this another half star I would cause this was a tough one for me but being that there seemed to be some things that a little more proofreading could have fixed and a few scenes that didn't line up right for me, I had to go with 3 instead of 4.

Fun, quick read. I would have liked it to have been a bit longer (if there were a print version - I hate reading on a kindle) with more about the zombie infection.
