Anythng by Jimmy Liao is amazing. I am really lucky to have found all his works here in Taiwan and I have gone through many of them. Although not many have been published inEnglish, or if they have then they are hard to find, but this is the latest by Jimmy, a story told through the eyes of a small girl about her family and how everything seemingly evolves around going to the movies. Her mother and father met in the movies and other major points in her life are remembered by what was playing, what posters were up and who she went to the cinema with.
Although Jimmy writes in Chinese, his stories are amazingly told through his pictures. His art is second to none and this book, incorporating actual movie posters and scenes into his amazing paintings is one step above much of his past work.
I've been through the book twice now and each time I do it becomes more clear and amazing. Like others (Turn Left Turn Right, The Fish That Smiled, the Moon Forgot, The Blue Stone...) the story is told in so many ways that you don't even need to know the language to understand what Jimmy is saying.
This latest book (coming after the great How To Own a Corner) really cements Jimmy as a treasure in both Taiwan and the world of art and storytelling. I love it, and I will admit, I have teared up at most, if not all of his books at one point or another. I hope others can read this as I had to add the book to Goodreads. Jimmy Liao is out there... you need to find him and see for yourself why an entire country is in love with him and his stories.
