Regency Style by Steven Parissien

Rate this book
The Regency period (c.1780-1837) saw the development of what is today one of the most popular styles in architecture and design. The combined influences of the antique and the exotic, together with the technological innovations of the day, produced a sophisticated style that was eclectic but also quintessentially British. By examining the constituent parts of the Regency house in England and America - its architecture, doors and windows, plasterwork and ironwork, colours and coverings, services, furniture and gardens - this comprehensive and stimulating book will inspire not only the owners of period houses but also anyone with an interest in this uniquely attractive style.

Splendid insight into the -real- design, craftmanship and history of an era. I am a film set designer and need ACTUAL knowledge instead of imagined sceneries (also great to distinguish other set designs from Austen films to be true to history - or not). It was delightful to read and I added so many bookmarks to facts I haven't known before: from doorframes being originally green, detailed guides to furniture, to the invention of better doorlocks - this book has it all. I love this one so much more than contemporary "how to" booky imitating regency interior design... This stays true to history and merely explains facts instead of trying to imitate. Huge amount of nicely explained image material and light-hearted read at the same time. I flew through it! Highly recommended.

This is a fabulous book ion art, architecture, culture, homes and gardens. The book covers 1780 to 1840 and relates the styles to impact of building arts in America. Chapters contain lovely quotes of the era, building techniques and insights, line drawings and engravings and modern images of extant examples. The survey of Regency house design not only covers sitting rooms and such, but furniture design, stove and kitchen fixtures, window covers, fabrics, colors and gardens. It is an insightful book which helps me understand what satirists meant when they mentioned certain items or trends. I just bought this- it is worth dusting -- it is that good <3
