Like the classic original, with its portrayal of affectionate patience with pets by both children and their parents, this new edition of Newberry's PANDORA has been lovingly re-issued by her daughter, Felicia N. Trujillo, and features three innovations for Newberry fans and students. This is the first edition to feature a full color reproduction of the cover art; a commentary about Newberry's artistic process in creating PANDORA, which was the result of a quantum leap in the artist's work; and a brief biography of the artist's pioneer childhood. PANDORA, published in 1944, was done in yet another new medium Newberry developed to make cats come so alive on paper that they seemed ready to walk off the page. She perfected using pastels on velour paper, and chose a long-haired Persian kitty, Pandora, as her heroine. In a daring move, she also included free ink sketches usually only shared between artists, and never before presented to the public. Artists, cat fanciers, and children all loved the rich, three-dimensional, drawings of Pandora portrayed with the personality of a real feline-both maddening and delightful. The story itself will ring true for anyone who has ever known and loved a cat. Newberry was pleased to admit that all her stories were "99 and 44/100% true." Pandora, her very own cat, was drawn from life for this book."
This book tells the story of one little boy, his cat Pandora, and his mom’s trouble in one day. Pandora is a typical cat who wants her meat to eat and gets into trouble. The little boy, Peter, is always on Pandora’s side and playing with her. His mother is always yelling at pandora and mad at everything she does. When peter and his mother get him dressed from the clothes in his bureau top drawer to go to the market, they are surprised upon their return. Pandora doesn’t greet them and is nowhere to be found. They search the whole place for her, and the mother begins to regret what she did previously and worries about pandora being out on the street. Eventually they find her in the top drawer, and all is made well. Peter asks throughout the story what Pandora says and thinks, and his mother always answers. A great story about loving animals and realizing how you can get frustrated, but how that all changes when you could lose them. Another greatly illustrated book that makes the cat truly come to life.
I am adding my children's books that I read to youngsters for story time. These stories are classics, and always appreciated by little ones. I read them several times a year. All are in poor shape -worn down from use - and binding or two chewed by unruly birds (cockatiels)....
