Olipas Alan Mooren Helvetistä tymäkkää tavaraa! Viiltäjä-Jackin tarina ei ole minulle ennestään tuttu kuin pääpiirteittäin, mutta jahka olen tahkonnut nämä viisi kirjaa läpi, lienen jonkin sortin asiantuntija. Sen verran pieteetillä Moore käy 1800-luvun viimeisten vuosikymmenten Lontoon historialliseen kuvaukseen ja tapahtumiin käsiksi.
Ensimmäisen osan alussa en saanut tarinasta aluksi mitään otetta, mutta pian tajusin, että albumin takaosassa löytyy sivukohtainen seliteosa. Kun sarjakuvaa luki rinnakkain seliteosan kanssa, alkoi se avautua minulle.
Ensimmäisen albumin tehtävä on selkeästi kertoa taustoja, hahmottaa Lontoon rahvaan ja toisaalta myös yläluokan ilmapiiriä. Vapaamuurarius on myös isossa roolissa. Tapahtumat eivät ole mitenkään erityisen jännittäviä tai edes viihdyttäviä. Tässä selvästi taustoitetaan ja myöhemmin sitten rytisee.
Piirustustyyli on mustavalkoista, toisaalta tarkkaa, toisaalta epäselvää ja Moore käyttää paljon viivatekniikkaa. Tyyli ei ole periaatteessa lainkaan minun makuuni, mutta se istuu täydellisesti tarinan sisältöön ja synkkään ajankuvaan.
Sarjakuvaksi Helvetistä on raskasta luettavaa. Mutta uskon, että jo seuraavassa osassa alkaa tapahtua ja tarina herää henkiin paremmin. Henkilöt on kyllä upeasti kirjoitettu. Tästä sarjasta tulee mielenkiintoinen lukukokemus...

This first book in a five book series about Jack the Ripper and his murders just about gets the story started. The story is based on a conspiracy theory about the murders and is mostly speculation and fiction yet very well researched and tries to make it as factually accurate as possible.
Unlike in the film the reader gets to know the identity of the Ripper and the circumstances that started the events from the get go, which is a very interesting way to set the story. At times the story felt a bit confusing but it was always deliberately so, because after finishing the chapter everything became clear. Eddie Cambell's artwork is perfect for this dark story and there is no hiding of the grotesque elements of the story and Victorian times from the reader.
The only down side of the book is the last chapter which is entirely about the Ripper's philosophy and reasoning for his up coming actions. This chapter felt like a skewed history lesson and it was incredibly heavy to read. However, after the chapter the appendix is really interesting and worthy of reading. I would suggest to anyone who reads the book to read the appendix for each chapter after reading the chapter in question and not as I did in one go after reading all the chapters.
All in all the first book of the series was very intriguing and I am looking forward to the next book. Word of warning to those who are thinking of reading the series, however, the story and illustration are very crude and are not for those who are very sensitive.

Tämä jätti melko ristiriitaiset fiilikset. Sarjakuvaan on kerätty paljon tietoa ja tutkimuksia Viiltäjä-Jackista sekä sen ajan Lontoosta, tunnelma on luotu voimakkaasti ja tapahtumat ovat rajuja, mutta samalla teos on myöskin raskas ja jopa tylsälukuinen.
Olisin ehkä kaivannut kirjaan jonkinlaista pientä pohjustusta, sillä jos kirjaa ei ala lukemaan lopusta tai takakansi edellä, ei sen tarinasta saa ensimmäisellä lukukerralla oikein minkäänlaista otetta. Piirrosjälki on karua, ympäristö on hienosti luotu, mutta esimerkiksi hahmoja on todella vaikea erottaa toisistaan: itse tunnistin hahmoja eniten tapahtumpaikkojen mukaan.
Teos on mielenkiintoinen, mutta siitä puuttuu jotain, joka tekisi siitä oikeasti mukaansatempaavan. Etenkin loppusivujen liitteiden myötä tuntuu, että lukisi enemmänkin tietokirjaa.

Me ha costado muchísimo leer este primer número de la colección de 1995 de planeta de From Hell. Creo que no soy nada fan de los masones. Y es la primera vez que algo de Moore se me atraganta tanto. Si bien muchas cosas me han gustado, no he podido. Lo mismo en otro momento de mi vida sigo leyendo los otros números.

Dentro de los muchos fracasos que vengo acumulando este año, el no terminarme From Hell claramente es uno de los que más me molesta. Pasaron cosas mucho peores en este 2015 (algunas, personales, familiares e irreversibles, con partidas de gente muy querida que todavía estoy tratando de asimilar; otras, a nivel social y cultural, que no serán eternas pero nos condenan a un mínimo de cuatro años de desastres y abusos sistemáticos en todo el país), pero sin duda dejar un año más estacionada a esta obra maestra de Moore y Cambell es una de las que más me molesta a nivel lecturas (la certeza de que no voy a llegar con los 444 tomos que me autoimpuse como meta lectora es otra), sobre todo por lo interesantísimo que me resultó esta primera parte, punzante y ácida como sólo el bardo puede plasmar, e ilustrada con una elegancia sucia y rabiosa por Campbell.
Ni bien pueda me voy a poner a ordenar ediciones, que se ve que algún burro anduvo fusionando a lo loco la colección en 5 tomos (como esta española, o la finesa) con la de 11.

Loistava sarjakuva ja mikä vielä parempaa; kaikkien ruutujen yksityiskohdat ja historialliset faktat selitettiin lopussa. Alan Moore on perusteellinen pohjatiedoissaan ja kertoo mikä kaikki on faktaa, mistä faktat on otettu. Vastavuoroisesti kaikki sepitetyt kohdat listataan ja perustellaan minkä takia juuri siihen ratkaisuun on tultu.
Suosittelen lämpimästi, enkä malta odottaa sarjan muiden osien lukemista.

Tekijöillä on pakko olla jonkinlainen pakkomielle yksityiskohtiin, niin täyteen pakattu informaatiota tämä kirja oli. Hyvällä ja ehkä vähän pahallakin tavalla. Salaliittoja sivu sivun jälkeen ja tuntui että tarinassa ei päästä eteenpäin tai edes alkuun ollenkaan. Silti kiinnosti sen verran että jatko haettu jo kirjastosta.
