Bren Mickler wishes for a simpler route to the future, so she has her palm read at the county fair. Soon Bren decides to give fortune-telling, horoscopes, and even superstitions a shot. The TodaysGirls show her the futility, fraud, or worse, but Bren jumps in with both feet. Relying on the help of Internet psychics, Bren tries her hand at fortune telling, and when her predictions don't come true, she tries to make them come true. It takes an ingenious team effort by the TodaysGirls to bring Bren back to her senses. And Bren will come closer to understanding that only God knows the future; it's best left in His hands.
Unpredictable PLOT: Bren tries to find the easy way out of making decisions because of a bad decision she made over the summer by turning to magic 8 balls, palm readers, and horoscopes. Also as a way of helping the cheerleaders raise money for new uniforms at the county fair. It's there she bumps into her dream guy-he of the blue intensity-Tad. Is it written in the stars for Bren and Tad?
My THOUGHTS: For the first bit of this book I was annoyed with the Today's girls who all seem to have sticks up their backsides toward anything involving astrology. Ok, I admit astrology can't give you ALL the answers, but I do know people who check there's just because sometimes it's interesting to see what they say. I thought the Today's girls were taking it WAY too serious, but then Bren started to take it WAY to serious. I was thinking does she *seriously* believe that this stuff is going to come true. I think even she was confused about it. I was half and half about her wanting to believe that she thought she could. First of all, I think it's missing the point to read a prediction and then try to make it happen, but then I can't fault her either for trying to be about making good things happen because of the predictions and not just relying on them to come true. I don't think Bren caused any of it and the others were just as much at fault because they were naïve enough to believe this stuff was going to happen. Why blame Bren as she pointed out. You get what you pay for. In the end, though I felt really bad for Bren. Even though she and Tad didn't seem to have that much chemistry, it was wrong for him to lead her on and he knew he had a girlfriend. He never should have hung out with her and taken her to the car lot in the first place. It kind of felt like he was using her because he thought she'd bring him luck or something. And then he won her a teddy bear! COME ON! Even though Bren did kind of jump the gun by claiming him to the other cheerleaders. I think the lesson Bren *should* have learned is not only should she not just rely on astrology to predict her future-not so much everyone else's-but don't be quick to fall head over heels with jerks like Tad unless he gives you a REASON! And ask upfront if they have girlfriends. They are NOT all honest.
RATING 7 This one was slightly better than the ones I've read so far in the series. I guess because I sympathized with Bren in the end over Tad and then finding out the guy that was crazy about her just hours ago got with someone else that quick had to burn!!! Double dissed in one night. Even tho it was kind of her fault not to give Jason a chance but I won't beat her up to bad because I bet she beat herself up pretty badly about it after she got home.
I've been really enjoying re-reading these books that I enjoyed as a teen when they first came out, but this book really highlighted some of the worst aspects of the American Christian culture... The judgy-ness that the other girls show towards the main character for putting too much faith in astrology and superstitions... using Bible verses to not-so-subtly try steering her in the right direction... it just wasn't it for me. I'm not saying there isn't a place for tough love in a religious setting, but when it's teen girls policing each other and being depicted as good and righteous for doing so... well, it just left a bad taste in my mouth.
