Soren Buchanan no longer wishes to work for his father, crime boss James Buchanan, nor does he want to continue his relationship with the dangerous and sexy Jolina Miciano. But Jolina has connections that would make James Buchanan more powerful than he already is. Unwilling to be a pawn in his father's game, Soren decides to stop seeing Jolina even if it means having to suffer through one of his father's vicious beatings. Beaten and bruised for his defiance, Soren flees to the FBI for help. Mason Ward, former US Army Ranger and security specialist, lives a quiet life on a house boat docked off the island of Guam. Despite his lack of companionship, Mason believes he is living the life he's always wanted. Then a job comes Mason's way, one that will turn his life upside hide Soren Buchanan. Hiding Soren Buchanan should be easy money, but not for Mason. Soren is young, seductive and lacking the type of discipline that doesn't leave bruises. It doesn't help that Soren's physical presence brings up desires Mason would rather not feel about a mobster's son. Now Mason has to keep his mind on his job while being chased by thugs sent to bring Soren Buchanan home...dead or alive.

Nadja is a native of Germany and nomad by choice. Since marrying, she has lived on three continents, including two tropical islands, where she survived super typhoons and earthquakes. Her nomadic lifestyle recently ended when her redheaded Veteran husband (“Hooah”) retired from the military. The entire family—three kids, cats and a dog—pulled up their Hawaiian beach blankets and trekked 4600 miles to settle in lush Georgia.

Nadja is a professionally-trained concierge. She once worked in a German luxury hotel that “in historical terms, was one of the most feudal hotels in Europe” (Tassilo Bost). She’s also been a corporate event planner and a public relations assistant, after all she has a master’s degree in Communication and Information Studies from Rutgers University. During her time in Japan, she worked as a staff writer for a Japanese weekly and did her darndest not to answer the phones; her Japanese is horrible.

Currently, she works as an executive assistant for a female-founded, female-led startup.

Nadja is a Pisces, a passionate introvert, a tireless fibromyalgia warrior and a recovering sugar addict. She’s a voracious reader and, luckily, an insomniac.

Soren Buchanan, a young and attractive redhead, wants to end his unfulfilling relationship with sexy Jolina Miciano. Soren’s father is an organized crime boss who will benefit from their union. When Soren decides to end the relationship and suffers a brutal beating at the hands of his abusive father, he enlists the help of the FBI.

Former US Army Ranger Mason Ward lives a quiet life on a houseboat in Guam. He is hired to protect Soren from his bad-tempered father.

The only problem is, Mason has a thing for redheads. And his job turns out to be a lot more complicated than just keeping Soren safe.

The Protector is a fun, sexy, fast-paced read. Its non-stop action and suspense kept me flipping pages well into the evening. Despite the seriousness of the main characters’ desperate situations, there was also a bit of humor and playfulness to lighten up tense moments. I enjoyed the lush tropical setting of Guam, with its beautiful palm trees and unpredictable weather, and the love that develops between two very different men.

N.L. Gassert has written a wonderfully entertaining and gripping story featuring terrorists, an abusive father, a lush tropical setting and two men, who are total opposites, and the mutual attraction neither man can deny. This fast-paced story with it's great cast of characters will grab you and take you on a non-stop adventure from beginning to end.

Soren Buchanan, a young man running from an abusive situation, is entrusted by the FBI into the care of former US Army Ranger Mason Ward. Soren's father, James "The Smile" Buchanan, is a local crime boss with ties to terrorists and a very heavy hand with his family. When Soren tells him he has broken up with his girlfriend Jolina Miciano he is incensed. James needs to keep Jolina, who is a terrorist, happy, and if that means keeping Soren in her bed that's what James demands of his son.

From their first meeting Mason is attracted to Soren, he's young, sexy and a redhead, just Mason's type. But Soren is also hot-headed, lazy, pampered, with an alcohol and drug problem and so the attraction Mason feels comes with drawbacks. Living together on a boat in the middle of the ocean however will give them time to slowly forge first a friendship and then the more real and deeper feelings of new love.

When Soren's whereabouts are discovered and Mason is injured during an attempt to return him to his father, Soren must be the one to protect Mason. This change to their dynamics further serves to bring them together and also helps to put Soren on the road to self-discovery and maturity. The action is almost non-stop after this point in the story and had me glued to my Sony Reader until I finished the story.

Aside from Mason and Soren, the book is filled with some really well developed secondary characters. What I liked is that even the "bad guys" in the story are written well, so that whether it's Soren's father or Mason's brother, Jolina the ex-girlfriend or Ben who is Mason's business partner, good or bad, the characters are wonderful additions to the story. Another great part of the story is the setting itself, the author's descriptive style serves to really allow the reader to picture and really get into, the island of Guam.

This story is more an action-suspense with romantic overtones than the usual M/M romance/erotica book I'm used to reading and I really liked it. The emphasis on the plot, the character growth that Soren undergoes and the sweet slow buildup and sexual tension between Mason and Soren make this an incredibly fun, fast-paced and sexy story. I'm looking forward to the second story in this series which should be out sometime during the first half of 2010.

I enjoyed this story immensely. I felt it was very well written with an interesting and fast-paced plot that grabbed my attention from beginning to end. I highly recommend The Protector.

This book was not bad. In fact, the story defied convention on several levels, but I think there are probably a lot of better books out there to read first. If you have blown through your entire to-read list and are looking for something new, then give this a shot… otherwise I’d suggest moving on.

When Mason Ward is asked to look after Soren Buchanan – a baby sitting job was all it was meant to be. Knowing from the outset what was Soren main grip – alcohol and junk food and coffee – was good to know, as Mason was a bit of a health nut.

Being in the middle of nowhere and your days doesn't change much from hour to hour is not a big stretch for Mason, he has worked hard to maintain this low maintenance sort of lifestyle, however add Soren and his less than covert attempt to expose every inch of his body and as often as he can to the mix and Mason is definately not in the right frame of mind for what was yet to come.

Things doesn’t stay honky dory for long – as a bag of trouble lays in Soren’s wake and despite him keeping a low profile, life goes on and there are people concerned about his where about and who he might be talking to. Mason seems to be the only person in the dark and this leads to a lot of headache and despite his reluctance a bit of heartache as well.

I love the cover on this book and it was my immediate lure for reading it. Add in the fact that two of my favourite bloggers raved about it and the fact that I had a dickens of a time getting my hands on it only added to the draw to make me want to read this book.

Set in Guam, which in itself is a first for me. Straight off you can feel the confidence in the voice of this author. The plot is nothing magic, but it feels like a book that was just itching to be writing, the language is easy, the suspense – while didn’t work for me, has that gang land feel to it where everyone was distrusted until proven innocent.

I remember thinking what is it about his book that was just average for me and it was more the characters I think. The bad guys and the good guys were thugs plain and simply – they acting with this veneer of polite respectability and made no apology for the fact that they can live in both world without really expecting some sort of consequence for their actions – they were laws unto themselves.

THE PROTECTOR was all mostly plot, and this was one of the more positive aspect of the book – the plot move through a whole shopping list of events and very fast as well. The attraction between Soren and Ward was instant and had some moment where I just had to grin at Soren’s antics.

While this book didn’t work for me and more for personal reason. Please see Val Kovalin review from ObsidianBookshelf.com

Soren Buchanan is a confused young man. He’s torn about his sexuality and his loyalty to an abusive father. James “The Smile” Buchanan is forcing his son to be a part of his shady business dealings, but Soren really doesn’t want this life. When Soren finds himself being forced into marriage, he goes to the FBI and meets with Agent Kaoru.

Mason Ward, a former US Ranger, is not really a bodyguard, per se. He’s in business with Ben Marques at Security Solutions. Agent Kaoru hasn’t told Mason the truth about Soren; in fact, he makes it seem that Soren is just a rich, spoiled, drugged out brat, but Mason takes the job of bodyguard anyway. Mason and Soren are very much opposites, but as the saying goes, opposites attract, and do they!! Mason is the image of the silent, healthy, follow the rules type of hero, but his one downfall is the red-headed Soren.

The Protector was originally published in 2008, and then re-released by MLR in 2017, and I thought, how did I miss this the first time around? It’s a fast-paced novel, with action, danger and snarky humor. The setting of the lush tropical island of Guam, and living on the high seas, certainly brings lots of romance to the storyline. The plot is really good and definitely kept me intrigued. There’s an abundance of characters, and the author brings them all to life. Stoney, Mason’s twin, is an outstanding character. He adds craziness and fun to this wild plot.

The only thing that disappointed me was that it seems as if this is the first of a series, but I can’t find mention of any other books related to this one. As there are good characters to build another story around, I hope N.L. Gassert will add to it soon.

I was tempted to give this one a "4-star" and changed my mind at the last minute ... Soren's chara was strong-willed, smart-mouthed, and believable. His resistance to temptation, and his giving in, were something I could easily relate to, despite the fact that I have no prior experience in what he does/goes through. It's understandable.

Mason's character is a bit more difficult to connect with. He's described in great detail as to being very large, very intimidating, and very protective. And yet what happens every time the bad guys come? He gets his ass wupped. It would have fit a little better if there had been a few scenes with him standing up and actually WINNING a fight or two.

The ending was abrupt and I was kind of left with a "... and the next scene is?" type feeling. Not that I felt it should be longer, as all the ribbons were tied up nicely, just that I felt there should have a little more finality to it. Not just Mason and Soren exchanging cryptic [not even flirtatious:] conversations over a bar.

I really liked this story (which was picked for me in the m/m romance group monthly challenge). Never having read anything by this author, I was quite curious - and, as it turned out, not disappointed.

Soren is a crime boss' son who has always chosen the easy path, letting his father pay for everything. When he is pushed into a relationship with Jolina, a woman picked by his father and a terrorist, he finally decides to leave and talks to the FBI. The remainder of the book shows his path to maturity, as he realizes that he has to become his own man. Not just for his own self respect and well being, but so he can stay with Mason, the man who was originally hired to protect him.

The process of Soren realizing who he is and taking a stand, with all its back and forth, kept me glued to the pages. The writing was entertaining and the characters real. Definitely worth a read!

This is the kind of fast paced, well-written action story that is instantly engaging and completely entertaining. The tight plot and well-paced story may stumble occasionally but that only adds to its appeal. The first installment of what promises to be a new series only scratches the surface of interesting characters and introduces a wealth of possibilities for future adventures. Not surprising this was a Lambda Award finalist and well deserving the recognition. Although this isn’t a mystery, all the bad guys are introduced early, the action from the beginning to the end is well thought out and enjoyable, almost more so than the romance aspect. Be sure to start this series now before the second installment comes out, you won’t want to miss it.

The premise of the book hinges on Soren, the son of a local crime boss, as he goes into hiding after a particularly brutal beating from his father. Although the FBI is reluctant to help Soren, they do set him up with a bodyguard of sorts in ex-ranger Mason. Mason and Soren are supposed to head out to sea away from the chaos in their wake but plans go awry soon after they’ve left. In the ensuing action, Soren must re-evaluate his life and choices while terrorists and angry fathers threaten his life.

The story begins with Soren being handed over to Mason for safekeeping and the two butt heads immediately. Soren’s spoiled life of privilege, alcohol, and drugs is at odds with Mason’s almost puritanical sensibilities. Although the two clash often, there is a surprising amount of mutual respect. Mason is able to see beyond the image and pampered life Soren has led to hidden strength even Soren doubts exist. This faith and belief in Soren is essential to helping him mature and grow over the course of the book. Soren never loses his wit and sense of humor through his trials, even accepting the abuse as the price for his easy lifestyle. It takes a considerable amount of force and Mason’s unwavering support for Soren to move beyond his empty life. Soren’s motivation and desire to prove Mason’s belief in him is not misplaced is the real driving force for change and maturity, more so than even the numerous and painful beatings he receives.

Soren is a great character, even as he frustrates for well over half the story. His inability to change his pattern of behavior and poor decision making almost predict bad things will happen. I was hard pressed to feel too sorry for him when his inevitable stupid choices led to dire consequences. However, his charm is also evident in his continued self-evaluation and hard work for positive change, even as he slips backward a few times. These aspects of his personality kept Soren from being too annoying and leave a character on the verge of so much possibility in future stories. Soren is a wonderfully flawed and genuine character that struggles against taking the easy life he’s been provided and developing his own identity and independence. He’s far from a weak character but has honest flaws and can admit to taking the easy road in his life up until now.

The relationship portion of the book certainly suffers for the action element. Mason and Soren dance around each other for the majority as Soren comes to terms with his first gay experience rather easily but Mason has some trepidation about the younger man. Soren’s flaws are balanced by Mason’s inherent goodness, creating an interesting dynamic between the two. That is not to say the romance is unsatisfying, as the slow bloom of emotions and connection is fierce, fiery, and explosive. The delicious tension mounts and provides some great scenes of sensuality. Although this is less important than the action/adventure theme, the relationship is no less developed or thought out.

Mason is perhaps a less well-developed character than Soren, though no less interesting, as he and others exist as a support system for Soren. This is really Soren’s story and his maturity while facing the consequences of his lifestyle and choices. Mason is a good balance for Soren’s poor decisions and helping the story is Mason’s twin brother, Stoney. Stoney is sure to have a book of his own as the dynamic character almost steals scenes. The other secondary characters such as Soren’s father, James, and his ex-girlfriend, Jolina, are both somewhat stereotypical without much depth beyond the obvious evil façade. Even so, they are solid characters without dipping too far into the classic bad guy tropes and keep from being annoying with snappy dialogue and fast paced action.

The story itself is mostly action and slips into almost non-stop sequences once the setup and characters are introduced. The quick story is entertaining and well written with only a few holes in logic and circumstance. Most notable is the final action sequence that comes out of nowhere with no explanation or logical reason for its setup. However, the story is engaging so this small quibble is unlikely to affect any enjoyment. The only other compliant would be that the ending felt forced and rushed, almost an attempt to wrap up big changes in a happy for now ending. However, knowing there are more books to come staring these characters mollifies any disappointment the ending may have caused.

Another well-researched aspect to the story is the setting of Guam. Many settings for action/adventure tend to be either exotic or a typical city setting without much character and flavor to the actual place. Here, the island of Guam is integral to the story and adds detail and texture to the story. The interesting and unique destination is not mentioned for something as stereotypical as drugs but for more mundane reasons and the actual crimes are those attributed to crime bosses everywhere. This helps create a believable setting, rich in detail that definitely adds to the book’s appeal.

Overall this is a great story with fascinating characters and well-written action. There is no fear of dirty, bloody, dire consequences and the story is not afraid to put everyone in danger, which keeps the reader guessing at what might happen while taking away the safety net of immediate rescue. The dramatic tension is well crafted and keeps you fully engaged in the adventure unfolding. This fresh new voice will captivate you from the very beginning and take you on a breathtaking ride from one scene to the next. You won’t want to miss this ride.

Good action/adventure plot, but lacking a bit in the romance department

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 7/10

PROS:
- The writing here isn’t brilliant, but it’s good. For the most part, it flows well and is easy to read quickly.
- I found the plot interesting and unusual. I’ve read/seen plenty of stories about people who flee from gangsters because they witness a crime or are somehow connected to the bad guys, but I’ve never read one where the character repeatedly comes back into contact with the people he snitched on. It adds a tense and intriguing angle to the storyline.
- I really liked several of the secondary characters. The majority of Mason’s friends/family/acquaintances are very accepting of his sexuality and are thus very nice to Soren when they meet him.
- Often I have trouble really believing in the actions of a story’s villains: they’re too one-dimensional or too cruel or not cruel enough to make me believe that the main characters would actually fear them. But the villains in this story are well done: they’ve all got nasty, physically abusive streaks, but they’re mostly just politically (or monetarily) ambitious--and anyone who stands in their way has to go. Period.

CONS:
- The story is fairly short (fewer than 200 pages) and focuses so much on the plot that the romance suffers a bit. I believed in their sexual attraction, but I wasn’t convinced at the end that the two main characters were in a forever relationship.
- Occasionally, the exposition and dialogue have a bit of a wooden sound to them, and it’s usually because the author isn’t using contractions: “It is a scare tactic” rather than “It’s a scare tactic,” “You are clean” instead of “You’re clean,” etc. The majority of these instances occur in chapters told from one character’s POV, so I’m willing to believe it was intentional; however, that character is from upstate NY, which doesn’t seem to me as though that would explain his complete avoidance of contractions.

Overall comments: I enjoyed this story, but I didn’t love it. If you’re looking for a good action plot with a bit of sex thrown in, this one might be just what you’re looking for. If you want to read a similar sort of plot with more emotional depth, you might try Jane Seville’s Zero at the Bone instead.

Mason Ward is not our classical all action-no word hero. A former ranger, now security specialist, he lives in a boat and he is a controlled hygienist: he eats only natural things, he doesn't drink alcohol, makes a moderate use of sugar and exercises everyday to impossible early hours.

So when an FBI friend asks him to protect a spoilt brat like Soren Buchanan, the son of the notorious business man James "The Smile" Buchanan, Mason is not at all happy of the mission: Soren is a younger of ten years man who has never done anything in his life, and with the reputation of moleste drunkness. But he was badly beaten by his father and he asked protection to FBI with the promise to reveal something really interesting to the authority.

And so Mason takes Soren in, and since the first time he meets the guy, he is taken: Soren is a red-head with a porcelan complex, right the type he likes, even in women than in men. Since Mason has finally admit that he prefers men over women, and this guy is exactly the type of man he can fall in love with.

Soren is not at all happy to be confined in a small boat with a man like Mason: they are at totally opposite for character, but Soren has to admit that he is intrigued by Mason, above all in a physical way. Soren has never had before homosexual experience, but he would be very glad to start with Mason.

The story is original in the way that both characters are not as the usual suspence-thriller characters you find in this type of romance. Mason is not a tought man that seems to be unaffected by bullets and with no apparent feelings. Soren is not the usual weak boy who needs a protector of his own. Soren is the son of an abusive father, and he searches escape out of his nightmare in alcohol and drugs. But even when faced with reality, he still loves his father and can't bring himself to betray him.

Plus the story is more a romance than an erotic novel. Sex is not the main event of the story, and even if we have our two or three sex scenes, they are well intertwined in the story and don't steal the scene to the main story.

An enjoyable story, I read it in a session... maybe I'd like it to be a little longer, but still is a good discovery.

When Soren Buchanan decides to leave working for his abusive, crime boss father he goes to the FBI for help. He is placed with former US Army Ranger Mason Ward, who has become a security specialist and lives an idillic life on board his yacht in Guam. Keeping Soren safe and at arms length should have been a cinch, but this proves more difficult than Mason anticipates and their attraction becomes harder to ignore, despite the presence of very real danger.

This was an wickedly enjoyable read. There was a great balance of strong characters, vivid surroundings and loads of over the top action.

Mason’s rather overwhelming masculinity (and muscularity O-o) was a great hook and his care for Soren is sweet, especially as his head is telling him to do the opposite! Mason is rather gruff and certainly makes the redhead work for it. Though Soren might need some rehabilitation, to get rid of his of his bad boy habits, you can see the willingness of Mason to stay and put in the hard yards. Their burgeoning relationship is fraught with sexual tension that builds beautifully and when Mason finally lets desire kind of take over, the surrender and passion builds up to some seriously sexy writing.

The pacing was good, although near the beginning there is rather a jump from when Soren arrives on the boat and then all of a sudden it seems to be some time down the track. Despite this, The Protector was an wonderfully engaging and sexy read, which kept me up way past my bedtime!

It is available in paperback, mobi and epub via the Seventh Window website. NL Gassert also has a great blog which is worth a nosey.

This is a fabulous action/adventure story. Only 2 problems with this book … as someone else pointed out, the appointed guardian got his butt kicked in a surprise attack and wasn’t able to do as much protecting as he would have liked … and, the 2nd one hasn’t come out yet.

As far as the above mentioned butt kicking, Mason got his clock cleaned good in a surprise attack on his boat. He held his own just long enough for Soren to finish off the bad guy in a surprise attack of his own. Unfortunately, the injury didn’t vanish as quickly as the rising sun. The story between getting attacked and finally ending the bad guys was about 2 days. While some writers create characters who shrug it off and function at normal strength after getting split open, stitches, and a concussion 2 or 3 times over, that was not the case here. Mason was motivated so he kept pushing forward, but it took a lot to keep him moving and alert. He was able to navigate them into some best case and good enough scenarios, but when it came down to dealing with the mess Soren got himself into, Soren was the one to save himself.

I liked that Soren wasn’t passive in the story. In the beginning he was snotty and clueless. Didn’t take long for him to open to the possibility that there was more than the entitled life of crime that he had been living. Old habits die hard, though, so he slipped up a time or two. As his feeling for Mason grew then his sense of right and wrong got better. And both times he was pushed to extremes it was to protect not only his life, but Mason’s, too. His growth was great to watch.

SlashReader: I took a chance on this one it was one of those that could've gone towards bad really fast. I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't bad for a first novel. There were a couple of things that I think could've been improved on however.

The first one was setting. Alright, the book was set in Gaum. Personally I don't know a lot about Gaum other then it's tropical. I would've liked to have had a few details about the city, or a bit more description of the place and people. I think that would've helped ground the novel a bit more.

I liked the fact that the characters didn't just fall into bed together right away. I think that built up the tension between them much better than various other possibilities.

The characters were fairly well done, and developed to some extent over the two-hundred pages. Though I think some of the uses of cliches were a bit overdone. However they weren't to the point of being really annoying. Just something that I feel this author could improve on. But over all it was a decent quick read. A book to start read and then let go of not something to completely dominate your thoughts for long periods of time. ;)

I purchased and read this paperback on 08/30/2009. My style of writing reviews was different back then. After reading about BA Tortuga's Sonny and MJ I thought I'd really like this one - I thought it would be more similar but actually despite a bit of differences this book was quite good. A definite thriller but Mason was not as tough as he first appeared though definitely alpha and Soren despite size & weaknesses turned out to be a deadly shot when it came to protecting his Mason. Fiery redhead / drugs and alcohol / strong attraction / child abuse even of an adult (23-year-old) dependent child / crime lord / father son relationship / slacker / thugs / boat - home / protection runaway / exotic setting - Guam / Filipino extortionists / cop brother

Dabbles in "cops" and "soldiers" without truly tackling the difficult bits. This one's a good bit like skimming your hand in the pool on a hot day to test the water temperature.

Though it stays firmly on the mild side in terms of action (in this reader's opinion) the characters are well presented and developed, and overall the story is technically strong.
While this one didn't leave me cringing, and I was invested sufficiently in the characters to finish reading, it definitely left me feeling like there should have been "more".

Very good m/m romantic suspense about the son of a crime boss who's tired of getting beaten up and goes to the FBI. He ends up in protective custody on the boat of a security specialist who won't put up with his spoiled ways... and then things get complicated.

Mason was asked to protect a drunk and junkie son of an influential man. He wasn't given all the details however and Soren himself turned out to be more trouble than he anticipated.

It was a fast paced story with a bunch of likable characters.
