Welsh author Gwynedd Rae (1892-1977) was the creator of the much-loved Mary Plain series. The first book in the series, Mostly Mary, was published in 1930 and the last, Mary Plain’s Whodunnit, was published in 1965. The series includes 14 books about Mary’s adventures. They became hugely popular when they were read on BBC Radio Children's Hour during the 1930s.
I enjoyed this as a kid and re-read it as an adult.
It's still an enjoyable read, but what I didn't realise when I was young is actually how disturbing the plot is. This child-like bear is kidnapped... it's really easy to see this happening to a human child (okay, so they wouldn't be kidnapping a kid to make them perform... but the way they did it was pretty convincingly real).
