Rose lives with her grandmother after her mother and stepfather disappeared 5 years before.

This episode of the story is spent in Newcastle where her stepbrother Joshua grew up.
Joshua (at university in London) and his friend Skeggsie (Joshua’s best friend in London and a techie) is helping Rose and Joshua with the search for their parents who went out for dinner one night and never came back.

Previous episodes have led them to know that their parents are alive and involved in something to do with a blue butterfly (they all now have the same tattoo somewhere on their body) and found notebooks with strange code that Skeggsie was helping them decipher.

This is the 3rd in the 4 part Murder Notebooks series and a key book in the series. Rose and Josh still want to know what happened to her mum and his dad and why the police seem to be covering something up. There is lots of action in this part of the story and tradgedy too - which sparked everything in th first place.

A must read series!

I picked out this book years ago and I finally got around to reading it without realizing it was part of a series, so this was the first book I read from the murder notebooks.
I have to be honest I wasn’t a big fan of josh or rose I found rose to be kind of a pushover, and Joshua was aggressive and selfish most of the time, however this book had me hooked trying to find out what had happened to Joshua’s uncle and rose and Joshua’s parents.
The book got really interesting towards the last 100 pages when the suspense really took place in the book, I liked that during this part rose became more involved in the mystery.
Overall I think this book is a good read (no pun intended) I definitely enjoyed the murder mystery and I’m looking forward to read the rest of the series.
PS: i want to know more about Michelle she was a minor character but I really liked her (maybe even more than the main characters 👀).

The books before this one were ok at best. For someone so passionate about someone wanting to find her long lost parents, Rose couldn’t care less. She would rather investigate everyone else’s murder - anyone else’s murder including people who have nothing to do with her - than look for her parents with her step brother. If I lost my parents, I would at least try and find them and not just sit back and mourn them until someone comes around and does the work for me while I just take credit by saying I’m helping. AT LEAST Joshua IS TRYING!!!

Also, the romance between them is so weird. It a bit unusual having a step-brother and step-sister romance, especially when they are trying to find their parents again. What will they do when they find their parents? They could probably go on a double date/ small family dinner. It’s PRACTICALLY like falling in love with your brother.

Along with that, Joshua’s best friend who he has been living with - - ✨SPOILERS ✨ - - dies and Joshua barely even mourns properly even after he blames himself. If my best friend died and I thought it was because of me, I would be traumatised for life and would definitely need a therapist. Joshua doesn’t even care about that. He just uses it as a cue to snuggle up with his step-sister and fire up their very sad romance. And who kills of the third main/side character in the book when there is basically no action in it and all they do is go around from place to place finding things? It’s sad. It’s not like his death was even anything dramatic or anything related to the plot. He was just beaten up on the streets when he went out searching for Joshua. Without him, it’s just Rose, who is depressed with almost no personality, with Joshua and their cringey romance. I was going to finish the book despite all that but Joshua’s best friend’s death was my breaking point. I LITERALLY gave up and moved onto another book. I really don’t recommend this series. It’s not worth it.

This book certainly had a lot of plot development in the mystery. We finally start getting some solid, concrete answers as to what actually happened to Josh and Rose’s parents. There of course are some other mysteries involved as well, and we find out how a lot of them are connected. I’m not quite sure what the final book will offer, as this one seemed to be pretty conclusive. But I do feel like there still needs to be some wrapping up, at the very least. But I hope that’s not all there is in the last book. I’ve been really engrossed in this series, and am really glad I started reading it.

Not going to lie, I mostly like this series for the plot. Mysteries and seeing the puzzle pieces coming together is always a pleasure. The characters, while I care about them because I’ve spent so much time with them, tend to be kind of annoying. While I would like to compare them to Ron, Harry, and Hermione, they’re a little less charming than that trio. They are always irritable and moody (and yes, I know they have reason to be, but come on…it’s Christmas, they’re together, and they have a dog with them). Josh and Skeggsie in particular were annoying to me, and I would’ve liked for Rose to have knocked their heads together. But at any rate, there was a lot of progress made in this book, both storywise and even character-wise, regardless of if they did a lot of petty bickering. It didn’t get worse than that, and they overall are good people and still easy enough to sympathize with and root for.

I liked Rose quite a lot in this book. She really thought of or noticed things that I definitely wouldn’t have picked up on. She reminds me of a Nancy Drew/Shelby Woo-type girl. Very observant and determined to find things out, following up things and not being afraid of asking questions, but in a subtle way. She just has a knack for that. I also quite liked the character of Michelle a lot, even though she was a minor character. I just loved her dignity and how she stood up for herself. I rarely see that in characters.

There is a disturbing climax about halfway through the book that kind of gets you down, and I would have liked for things to have led up to it a little better. Won’t say anything else, so as not to spoil. But definitely a darker book than the previous two, which is saying something. It’s interesting how even though on the surface it just seems like three friends hanging out in a seaside town for Christmas break (hanging around the house, going to pubs, etc.), it is so much more than that. There may be little action (although when it gets to it, it’s a lot), but a lot of build up to some massive conclusions.

In this book, the pair wind up in Newcastle where Skeggsie and Josh grew up. Only upon returning for Christmas, everything falls apart as Josh's uncle winds up in hospital after a bad fall.

Only things become much more serious and sombre as old bullies show up and cause trouble as well as a surprising twist with some officers whom know their parents and whereabouts to do with how and why they disappeared...

This was a serious and emotional book as a tragic death which will shock occurs. There's secrets and history discovered which add up on top of everything they know and they grow closer over the turmoil their lives have been thrown into.

Butterfly Grave is book 3 in The Murder Notebooks series.

Rose, Joshua and Skeggsie go to Joshua's uncles town near Newcastle for Christmas as his uncle had apparently fallen off a cliff and was injured quite badly.

I didn't like how Rose and Joshua behaved; they were quite rude and selfish as well. We also find out a lot more about the things that are happening while also losing someone important!

SPOILER!

What do you mean skeg is no longer around?? It's so depressing. And the fact that it's totally unnecessary is just **. And I have to say Joshua is getting annoying. Does he not understand the danger they might be putting their parents in? And also if I found out my parents abandoned me to kill some murderers and pretended to be dead when I was looking for them, I would not turn my back even if they return.

After not enjoying the second book in this series, I gave up on it. However, yesterday I thought that I might as well give this book a shot. I had started reading it before, getting about a quarter of the way through it, but did find it very boring. Once I had started reading it again I could not put it down. It was full of suspense and very dramatic. This seemed to have a better plot than the first two in the series and actually I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm glad that some of the main questions have finally been answered, as well, because I feel as though they were what made the first two books seem quite slow. Overall, I would recommend that you read this book if you have started the series but gave up on this book, however, if you have not started the series I don't think that it is worth starting the series.

I absolutely adore the Murder Notebooks series! Butterfly Grave by Anne Cassidy is the third book in this series and just as we were able to explore more about Rose and her past in the previous book, in Butterfly Grave not only do we get some very crucial information regarding Rose's mum and Joshua's dad and the things they have been involved in, but we also learn a bit more about Joshua and Skeggsie's life prior to the start of the series. I found it all very interesting and I thought Butterfly Grave, while slightly slower in pace, was a fab addition to the series. I am now eagerly anticipating the fourth and final book, Dead and Buried, which is being published in March.

Butterfly Grave begins just before Christmas and Joshua has invited Rose to come spend the holidays up in Newcastle with him and Skeggsie following Joshua's uncle's fall from a cliff. It is thought that Joshua's uncle may have fallen whilst walking his dog but when Joshua and Rose start poking around, it is found that things are much complicated than they first appear and that Joshua's uncle may be more involved with things. I think one of things I love the best about this series is how well written the mystery is. I can never guess as I'm going along what will happen next or who will be responsible for all that is going wrong around these three teenagers.

But of course, being surrounded by murder and dead bodies has taken its toll on Joshua in this book. He's constantly on edge with worry and paranoia, obsessively checking the license plates of those he believes to be following him and making sure that Rose is vigilant as well. It's not all for nothing as this book does answer quite a few questions about the disappearance of Rose and Joshua's parents, about the butterfly tattoos and the beginning of the murder notebooks. But these answers also come at a very steep price.

I still love Rose and Joshua. Their relationship has just been really heartbreaking up to now, with Rose being so unsure about revealing her feelings for him. Every time we meet someone new and one or the other introduces Rose or Joshua as the other's sort of step-sibling and my heart ached just that little bit more. Despite the unconventionality of it, I really want to see where this thing between them will lead.

I really love this series. I love the murder mystery of it and how each book solves one particular murder but also offer more clues to the overall mystery of the disappearance of Rose's mum and Joshua's dad. I love the excitement and thrill that comes with uncovering these secrets but I also really love the characters and how much their relationships pull at my heart strings. The Murder Notebooks series is such a wonderful set of books! I highly recommend that you pick them up to read if you haven't already done so!

This is the third book in The Murder Notebooks YA crime series, and I was looking forward to reading it.

Rose and Joshua are close, they've got a special bond. It's not just that their parents were a couple and at one time they lived together as a family. Their bond stems from loss. Rose's mother and Joshua's father disappeared five years ago. After reconnecting, the teens are determined to find out what happened to their parents and don't believe claims that they are dead. To conduct their own investigation, they've enlisted the help of Joshua's computer whiz best friend, Skeggsie.

But when Joshua's uncle has a serious accident and is hospitalised, the trio head to Newcastle to spend Christmas there.

From the beginning, things in Newcastle are challenging. There's too much history for both Joshua and Skeggsie, too many people they'd rather not see again, and there's someone watching them. Staying in his uncle's place reveals that he had some secrets too, things the three teens slowly start to uncover. What at first seems like a different investigation soon merges into the one they're all so focused on, leading to a tragic situation.

Wow. This was an intense book! Joshua and Rose have been through some pretty dark times and faced quite a bit of danger, but what they have to deal with here really pushes them to the edge. I found this story insightful and very sad. I certainly didn't expect a particular tragic incident to happen to one of the characters. I admit, I was in shock. :(

The relationship between Rose and Joshua is changing. How can it not when they've been through so much together? And Joshua's moods take a real beating in this instalment. He's constantly on edge and angry, determined to lose himself in one mystery and then another--anything to keep himself busy and from facing his feelings. I think he's battling with a lot of emotions and some have to do with Rose. I was glad to see that no matter what, they stuck together.

Still, I can't help but wonder if his obsession is going to eventually tear them apart...

Butterfly Grave is a gripping book with several interlacing mysteries that reveal another layer of the big mystery surrounding the disappearance of their parents. The stakes are higher, the emotional tone deeper, and it embeds you into the lives of these two young people. Just like them, I want to understand the real reason why it's all led to this.

I'm really looking forward to reading the next book.

The Murder Notebooks has been a series I have enjoyed reading, and has been one that has constantly left me guessing over what was going to happen next. When Butterfly Grave came up for review I didn't hesitate in saying yes to a copy, I wanted to know what Rose, Joshua and Skeggsie were going to do next and if they would get any closer to finding out the truth.

I will be honest in saying Butterfly Grave took me forever to read, partly because of what was going on in my personal life (but I managed to read a lot of eBooks), but mostly due to the plot itself. While Butterfly Grave is a good addition to this series, I personally felt like it didn't do much for progressing the story as a whole.

Joshua is still struggling with what happened in previous book, making him very paranoid and on edge, and I feel like he is stuck in this cycle and only a certain event really shocks him into doing something, he is too focused on the diaries and what happened to Uncle, trying to make a connection between them both and basically ignoring everything that is going on around him.
Rose is stuck in the middle, not really knowing Joshua's Uncle, or anybody in the area, and I felt sorry for her being left to her own devices, her only ally is Skeggsie, but he too is struggling going back to a place he didn't like and that only brings up bad memories.

Butterfly Grave does share some secrets that help Joshua and Rose find out what happened to their parents, and they are possibly closer to finding out the truth about them, but being back home for Joshua doesn't really do much for the story.
There were shock twists that I don't expect, and an event that had me in tears, but I felt like Butterfly Grave doesn't really progress the plot much. It felt like a filler book rather than an advancement book, but the ending has me wanting to read the next instalment to see if they find what they are looking for and if the events that happened in Butterfly Grave affect how they move forward now.

Don't get me wrong, it wasn't terrible and the plot is alright, but I just had so many problems with it.
The thing that stood out to me the most was editing that seemed non-existent. There were commas and question marks where there shouldn't be and for some reason I found the excessive use of exclamation marks almost childish and almost thought they took away from the story.
Speaking of...I didn't feel like there was a climax to the book, even after a certain death. This may be due to the disconnect I felt towards the characters (could be due to the fact that it's been a while since I read the book before this one, but I can't be sure), but I just felt like as soon as it was getting kind of interesting I became disinterested again. The last thing that bothered me was that I just couldn't understand why they couldn't leave their parents alone, knowing that they're digging into obviously dangerous times. I really don't know how many times, and by how many different people, they have to be told to stay out of it.

Those series just gets better as it progresses. The fact that this book is set in Whitley Bay when Joshua goes home to look after his Uncle after an accident, was a bonus for me as I connected with this part of the story more being so familiar with the setting. The clues of the multiple mystery threads all come together so well, especially after what happens with Skeggsie and Rose finding out who the mystery woman is who is watching them. The Butterfly Murder and it's significance with Joshua's uncle was very suspenseful and interesting. I am so looking forward to reading the concluding book of the series. Looking for JJ has always been my favourite book by this author but this series is definitely just as intriguing as that book was.

Joshua's uncle has had a 'accident' after 'falling' off of a cliff edge. There is a murder that affects Rose and Joshua greatly. There mum and dad get in touch with them after 5 years and explain why they left them. Joshua's uncle is involved in the butterfly murder.

My favourite character is Rose because of her mixed up feelings about Joshua and how she keeps it hidden from him (most of the time). I liked the cover as it looked very mysterious especially with the person stood on top of the cliff in the fog. I didn't like the part about there parents and the message because I thought it was very rushed. Overall, I think this book has set up the fourth one to be better than the rest.

Ok. So now we know what's going on with their parents. KINDA. I guess the final book will be them reuniting and everything finally coming out and being explained??

I still can't believe they killed Skeggsie! I was totally starting to like him! Plus, I totes think he was gay and was maybe starting to have a relationship with Eddie. That's why 1) he was always picked on as a child and 2) why he's so protective over Joshua. HE'S SECRETLY IN LOVE WITH HIM!

Anyways, a pretty solid read. I'm excited to finish up the series.
